The Yoga Plate: Bring Your Practice into the Kitchen with 108 Simple & Nourishing Vegan Recipes

Rate this book
“ The Yoga Plate brings us compassion and living right for our families, our planet and our animals―a beautiful offering for good all around.” ― Julie Piatt and Rich Roll, bestselling authors, wellness leaders, chefs, and podcast hosts

Discover 108 nourishing and delicious vegan recipes in the first modern cookbook to marry yoga’s principle of ahimsa with nutrition

We take a lot of care when it comes to choosing the proper clothing for yoga, the right accessories, the best studio―but primary to these considerations is an often overlooked yet vital component of our diet. How we eat might be the most important aspect of an effective practice. How we eat is a huge component to the practice because it represents how we treat and nourish ourselves. By changing the way we eat physically and consciously, we can put ourselves on the path to greater well-being.

In The Yoga Plate , LA-based yoga power couple Tamal and Victoria Dodge introduce readers to the philosophy of yoga as it is reflected in our eating choices. The 108 recipes are designed according to the concept of ahimsa , or non-harm. “Consciously or not, we can cause a lot of harm with our eating habits,” explain the authors. “Living with ahimsa means we try to cause the least harm possible to all living creatures.”

Each recipe takes you through your daily practice of yoga, starting with “Morning Meditations,” where you’ll find smoothies and breakfasts to fuel and power you through the day; “A Plate Full of Prana,” with snacks, soups, and salads to revitalize your system; “A Bowl Full of Yin,” with recipes to help cultivate a centered mood; and “Sweet Savasana” for restorative and beneficial dessert options.

A well-rounded yoga practice includes a conscious approach to the things we eat. With The Yoga Plate , readers can make each meal a sacred activity to support both our practice and well-being.

A very pleasant surprise. It's the first time I saw "yoga" to be applied to cooking and eating. Definitely interesting a fascinating guidebook to a new mindset. And it really makes you realise how much you can (or maybe even you should) change about your life

Definitely saw several recipes I'm very eager to taste. Now I just need to get someone to cook them.

This really is more than a cookbook, its a spiritual journey in food.

The yoga plate helps you to bring clean, healthy, vegan meals to the table in style.
It makes sense to put as much effort into what goes into our bodies as we do taking care of the outside of it.
Refreshing, colourful food captured in beautiful photos.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Arc of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a cool, fun and unique cookbook! I loved the uniqueness of the recipes. While I would have liked to have seen more relevant pictures, pictures were supplied. Ingredients for the recipes should be easy to find.

If you’re a plant-based foodie like me and frequent popular vegan food blogs, then the style of this book will be all too familiar to you. Gorgeous photography, earthy-crunchy life advice [with a spiritual bent] and an overall aspirational vibe. In short, it seems like the sort of cookbook I enjoy looking at even though I never actually make any of the recipes.

But looks can be deceiving.

This is chock full of surprisingly simple, fresh and delicious recipes that can be enjoyed by [just about] anyone – whether they’re vegan or not. I tried out several of the recipes and here are my thoughts:

Eggless Egg Salad (p. 105) – super simple and very delicious. My only suggestion? Substitute black salt (also known as Kala Namak and easy to buy on Amazon) for the Spike seasoning to give this that unmistakable sulphuric eggy flavor.

Picnic Potato Salad (p. 106) – This is probably my new favorite potato salad recipe. Black olives, chives and dill give it a punch of flavor without the harshness of raw onions.

Miso Ramen Bowl (p. 120) – A perfect busy weeknight meal that beats heating up a frozen pizza. This is a ramen bowl made in one pot, using two packs of noodles and assorted veggies flavored with a few basic Asian kitchen staples (miso, soy sauce, rice vinegar and sesame oil). Probably my favorite recipe in the book (so far) because it’s simple, nourishing and delicious.

Summer Zucchini Salad (p. 140) – The perfect excuse to break out your spiralizer. Another easy-peasy meal bursting with fresh summer flavors.

Stuffed Mexican Sweet Potatoes (p. 173) – I think sweet potatoes and black beans are a combo made in heaven. To stuff them “Nacho-style” with corn, salsa, guacamole and their delicious Cashew Cream Everything Sauce (pg 198) is genius. Since I loathe raw onions, I omitted the red onions from this one, made my own salsa and substituted plain avocado for the guac. Two of these babies make for a hearty and filling meal.

In addition, I also whipped up a couple of the sauces and dressings (Fresh and Creamy Pesto, Avocado Cilantro Lime Dressing and Magic Tahini Sauce) and was generally pleased with their fresh flavors.

This is a beautiful, inspiring book of recipes that are as easy to make as they are to enjoy.

Beautiful Vegan Cookbook with Stunning Recipe Photos

This has to be one of the most gorgeously photographed vegan cookbooks that I have read, and I have read quite a few! While not every recipe has a photo, most do. Just flipping through the cookbook is a visual feast and makes me want to go into the kitchen and whip up some of these beautiful dishes. As you might guess from the title, this book is deeply grounded in yoga. In the introduction, Tamal talks about living in an ashram as a child and how that has influenced what he does, including food preparation and what he eats. There is a short introductory section about yoga, including some mindfulness practices that you can incorporate into your eating, physical exercise, and family life. There's a nice section on the pantry requirements for this cookbook. It is unabashedly vegan, but they don't use a lot of “strange” vegan ingredients. Most can be sourced at a good grocery store in the US and occasionally a health food store. The recipes themselves, in general, don't appear too complicated, which I always like. But the flavor combinations offered throughout the book certainly tempt the taste buds. Some are familiar like the peanut butter and chocolate smoothie, while others are more unusual, like the coconut, tomato, and avocado in a ceviche recipe. By the way, the vegetables on the cover are what you'll prep if you make the roasted autumn vegetables recipes. If you are into yoga or if you just like excellent vegan cookbooks, I highly recommend this one.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

My yoga practicing is an up and down kind of endeavor, in the sense that I go through phases where I'm quite dedicated to it, and then I forget about it for ages. But when I saw this book, I was intrigued, because I wondered how this practice would incorporate in the kitchen. Now, I am aware that yoga has a long cultural and religious history in India, where it contains many more aspects than the perhaps slightly "watered down" "wellness" version I experienced. I'm no expert in this history, so I can't say on which level the Dodges' book engages with it, but I did enjoy how it incorporates a certain awareness into cooking. Looking after your body starts with what you put in it, and while I'm very fond of a snack, I also think it is good to be aware of what it is your eating to make sure your body gets everything it needs.

I really liked how varied and delicious sounding all the recipes were, from the Ramen Miso Bowl to all the different sauces on offer. All the recipes are vegan and although I've read a few vegan cookbooks by now, this was one of the first were almost every recipe made me go 'ooooh, yum'! Finally, another thing I appreciated is that most of the ingredients will be easily sourced. Every time I want to experiment in the kitchen I run into the issue that I live in a relatively small town and sometimes can't even find roasted sesame oil, which means finding international ingredients can be a challenge. I think I'll be able to try out many of the recipes in The Yoga Plate and I very much look forward to doing so!

This lovely cookbook features beautiful photographs of yummy & nourishing food. It celebrates yoga mindfulness in life and in everything you do - including how you eat. All recipes are vegan, easy to follow, absolutely delicious, and include a cute note from the author.

If you're looking for yummy vegan recipes these are great. While not a vegan, I love incorporating vegan meals into my diet. The book's preface, "The Yoga Kitchen", breaks down how to incorporate the yoga lifestyle into your kitchen. The Yoga Philosophy is presented is an easy to understand way with plenty of examples from the author's life. Right before the recipes begin, there is a handy section entitled, "The Yoga Pantry" with tips on how to get started with being vegan. While it's not overly extensive it provides a nice base to begin even if you are just trying to incorporate vegan based meals into your diet.

As a yogi and sometime Vegan, I give it four stars - check it out when you can!

(NOTE) If the spiritual side of yoga isn't your thing (though picking up a book that talks about bringing your practice into the kitchen may not be the best thing if that's the case - even if it isn't too heavy on the spiritual end), you can just skip to all the recipes ;)

As a vegan I loved this book . I found the recipes wonderful and am sure many will become a staple in my kitchen. The author has written this for both those seeing a healthier lifestyle and those of us who thrive with healthy lifestyles that may or may not revolve around Yoga. The author enhances the usual plant based recipes here as part of a Yogi lifestyle meaning a way of eating that is one of no harm. It is the core belief of Yoga to do not harm in what we eat and the author's emphasis of a plant based lifestyle is both educational and heart warming for this vegan. For anyone new to plant based this cookbook is a great start as the author explains proteins, choices of vegetarian foods and cooking techniques. It is beautifully written, the recipes are outstanding and fun to try. I highly recommend this cookbook for all kitchens and anyone that has a plant based lifestyle. This is a must buy for Christmas present and I will buy a hard copy for myself to add to my vegan kitchen cookbook collection. Very well done to the author !

Thank you to the author, the publisher and to Net Galley for the ARC. My review opinion is my own.

I would like to thank the publisher, Sound True, and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this cookbook. The Yoga Plate, is not just a whole food based cookbook, it is way more than that. The author lovingly invites the reader to extend their yoga practice into other aspects of their lives, including our plate.

I think that this book is very timely and educates us about how we can contribute to the preservation of our environment and lead a more mindful and healthier lifestyle. The authors, Tamal Dodge and Victoria Dodge, definitely provide us with food for thought with their belief in the “no harm”philosophy.

Even if you do not care or agree with the beliefs of the author, just having the recipes are wonderful. I love the nutritional advice about the pantry items, different grains etc. last but not least, the book has stunning photographs of the dishes, which is in my opinion, a key requirement for a great cookbook.
I will definitely try out many of these recipes. I highly recommend this book!

I went into this book intrigued but hesitant. I've been a practicing yogi for a while, but never really thought about adding a diet element to it. I genuinely loved reading the introduction of this book. Their explanation of treating your plate and your meal as the base of your yoga practice by mindfully eating was interesting and definitely something I will be adding to my practice. I won't be transitioning to a fully vegan diet, but having a few meals a month that are vegan is something already done in my home so adding in the new recipes here will be a nice addition to my routine. I appreciate that the writers were intentional in creating recipes that would be easy to make while having a busy city lifestyle as my life is definitely busy and scouring the area for obscure ingredients is not going to win me over. I am excited to try many of the recipes in here, as is my 11-year-old son. I will also be recommending the book to some of my yogi and nutrition friends.

This book was received as an ARC from Sounds True in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have read many books on Yoga but I know of very few yoga cookbooks and everyone deserves to feel their best. Not only are these recipes very fitting to the practice of yoga but they also look very delicious and the fact that this makes you feel fantastic is another plus as well. I know a lot of our patrons are looking for more yoga, zen, and healthy cooking books and we will be glad to suggest this title for them.

We will consider adding this title to our Cookbook collection in our Non-Fiction section at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

This was an enlightening and mouthwatering read. If you’re exploring a yogi lifestyle combined with a vegan diet, or even not convinced a vegan diet could be tasty and nutritious nor provide all the essential amino acids, then I would encourage you to learn from this book. The section before the appealing recipes covers environmental concerns of food production (meat and dairy), thoughts about morning rituals and meditation. The recipes are amazing, the ingredients should be fairly easy to find, and the colour photographs are truly tempting. I would love a paper copy and in the meantime I’m grateful to Netgalley and publisher for the digital copy of this inspiring book in exchange for my honest review.

I was excited to get a chance to sit down with a copy of this cookbook because I'm always looking for new vegan recipes. While the book did share a lot of recipes, many of them were pretty basic and could be found in any vegan cookbook. The instructions were simple and easy to follow and incorporated fairly standard ingredients that can be purchased in most decent grocery stores. The photographs in this book were beautiful, showcasing the bright and colorful dishes and beverages that you can make. I read an advance digital copy, so some of the photos and recipe instructions were missing in my edition, but I believe the completed book will be a lovely addition to any kitchen. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Disclaimer: I was given an advance reader copy of this book by Sounds True via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As a vegetarian who eats mostly a vegan diet, but not strictly, I can see this cookbook becoming a staple in my kitchen. There are so many recipes in here that I want to try and none of them have hard to find ingredients like some vegan cookbooks rely upon.

I know of a few people that I may be giving this book to for Christmas this year.

I highly recommend this book!

The Yoga Plate is an excellent cookbook for anyone embarking on a vegan diet or someone who wants to eat healthier. The recipes are easy to follow; however, if you are new to veganism, you will have to invest in some new ingredients. All in all, the book contains a plethora of delicious recipes that will surely convince any vegan cynic. I love the photography, although I would like to see some of the more challenging or unique recipes pictured in the book.

Eh. This book is lovely, gorgeous, nice layout for a cookbook....but there are so many of these vegan, esp gluten free healthy cookbooks out there that this one didn't give me anything new. Also, I hated how things were "guilty" or "guilt-free." F that guilt stuff - that makes me think of diets. I don't feel guilty abt what I eat and a cookbook shouldn't make you feel either. For those newer to vegan cooking, they will appreciate this beauty, but this didn't offer anything new to me.

Review for pre-print version made available through NetGalley

Decent recipe book, enjoyed the different smoothie recipes, etc.

Issues only with the pre-print version of this-- page numbers are missing, things referenced etc. I think this is due to the nature of the fact that it is a pre-publication. Formatting on Kindle version not the best.

The Yoga Plate certainly isn't just a cookbook. It's a guide on a lifestyle integrating yogic beliefs into everyday life, not just on the mat. Which includes how we eat. I've been vegan for several years now but am still hard pressed to find many books that converge veganism and spirituality. This very quickly became one of my favorites.

“I love the way philosophy of yoga was introduced into every plate. The recipes were created with the ahimsa or non-harm, which is part of the Eight Limb Path in yoga, in mind. I tried some of the recipes in the book and they were delicious.

I have picked up quite a few cookbooks in the last few years, but this one was different.
There can have varying shades of information about why a certain food plan is adopted. The approach to informing us about it also can vary. Here is where this particular book stood out. One of the authors was brought up with yoga as a lifestyle, and the introduction reaches deep into his understanding of it. He interprets things well, and for someone who was brought with a similar understanding of our daily habits, it felt good to see it reflect in print.
It is disheartening to see what the idea of 'yoga' has been reduced to in the modern fast world, so much so that the anglicized names have crept into some practices in cities in India as well, just to 'keep up with the times'.
Anyway, the author talks a bit before elaborating on actual recipes. The recipes themselves are simple, but a few were familiar (to me). I took away more about the essence of the process of cooking and eating than actual recipes and was happy with that.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley, the review is entirely based on my own reading experience of this book and prior knowledge of some of the concepts discussed here.

Thank you @netgalley for a review copy of this cookbook. All opinions are my own.

Shortly after my husband and I switched to a vegan diet, I stumbled across The Yoga Plate account over on Instagram. I immediately clicked that follow button and have been enjoying their post and recipe ideas for nearly two years now. I jumped at the chance to check out their new cookbook.

I also enjoy doing yoga several times a week and love their concept that food and eating should be a way to extend your practice off of the mat. The beginning of the cookbook explains how Tamal was raised to respect and treat all parts of your life as a moving and mindful meditation. Preparing and enjoying food should definitely reflect that concept.

This cookbook is broken down in easy to follow sections:
Morning Meditation includes smoothies, teas and breakfast
Plate Full of Prana - snacks, sides, soups and salads
Bowl Full of Yin - Entrees, dips and sauces
Sweet Savasana - Desserts

The recipes are short and don’t contain hard to find ingredients. I enjoyed the descriptions at the start of each recipe and many included additional ideas on how to change it up a tad to offer a new taste or experience. The pictures are vivid and gorgeous too.

I look forward to trying: The Yogi (smoothie), Pretty in Pink Pitaya Smoothie, Banana Cinnamon Bliss, Pina Colada Summer Smoothie, Blissful Blueberry Muffins, Mashed Peas on Toast, Elote (Mexican Street Corn), Island-Style Coconut Bacon, Asian Cowboy BBQ Tofu and Vegan Sour Cream.

This is a fantastic cookbook to add to your collection and would make a wonderful gift for any vegan or yogi enthusiast.

This was a very nice and informative cookbook. It even had information on meditation and how to stock a good yoga pantry, including information on each ingredient. As well as an essential tool list. I love how in depth the different sections are rather than how most other books have smoothies lumped in with breakfast or dessert, this book gives them their own section. The photos are gorgeous and none of the recipes have any complicated or hard to find ingredients.
