Hm, not much happened in this and the main female character wasn't nearly as fun or interesting to read about in this one... hoping it gets better in the next volume!!

Mamura is so adorable! He's just so cute! I like where the stories going though the possible teacher student crush is a bit yikes but I'm really hoping she ends up with the sweetie that is Mamura

After arriving in Tokyo to live with her uncle, Suzume collapses in a nearby park where she had once seen a shooting star during the day. A handsome stranger brings her to her new home and tells her they’ll meet again. Suzume starts her first day at her new high school sitting next to a boy who blushes furiously at her touch. And her homeroom teacher is none other than the handsome stranger!

The Premise

Daytime Shooting Star vol 2 goes straight for the romance!! Suzume is pretty sure that she likes a boy for the first time ever... except that it isn't the boy that seems to have feelings for her that stirs her heart!! Nope, its her new homeroom teacher who is most definitely not a boy. I did love the school trip to an outdoor camp. It sees Suzume spending a lot of time with Mamura which is fun because he's a funny guy, but the trip definitely causes Mr. Shishio to tug on her heartstrings. This is totally a forbidden romance that doesn't pretend to be anything else.

The Buzz

My two favorite people are certainly Mamura and Yuyuka in Daytime Shooting Star vol 2. Mamura likes Suzume simply because she broke through his no touching boundaries. She's simple that way. I loved all of his reactions. He's kind of a deadpan sort of guy who doesn't really get flustered by anything but the girl he likes so it makes for some really delightful moments with Suzume. Yuyuka is the one who likes Mamura and I love how she's outed as a pushy and loudmouth girl! It was super fun how it garnered her fanboys. I really hope that these two can develop a relationship.

The Feels

Suzume gets to meet the very grown up ex-girlfriend of her new favorite teacher. This really stresses her out! She is a little underhanded with her dealings with this woman and its true to a high school girl. I do feel pretty uncomfortable with this storyline. Especially with how many teachers prey on their students for sex and intimacy. Daytime Shooting Star vol 2 hurries so fast into I luuuvvvv him phase that I'm getting really uncertain about this series as a whole. If you enjoy forbidden teacher student relations then you'll enjoy this...

The Visuals

Daytime Shooting Star vol 2 has a great mix of art styles that reflect different reactions by the characters in those frames. Sometimes there are detailed backgrounds. At others the simple character interactions shine like when Mamura thumps Suzume on the forehead for being dim. And then there is the bold art when Yuyuka is outed. It's really a very expressive style that I've come to enjoy.

Daytime Shooting Star vol 2 focuses heavily on forbidden romance between a teacher and student. This high school romance is about to get messy as new friends are hurt and rivals appear in the wings! Were you that girl who crushed on your young, dynamic teacher?!

⋆ ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⋆ ⋆ ⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 |

Soooooo, I'm giving this four stars because I love the friendship between Yuyuka and Suzume, but I'm reaaaaaaallly fuckin' uncomfortable about Suzumes teacher being a love interest. Now, I want to make a distinction here: I have nothing against a plot line revolving around a student being in love with their teacher as long as it's made clear that it's inappropriate. I have a HUGE FUCKING PROBLEM with a student being in love with a teacher and that teacher DEVELOPING FEELINGS FOR SAID STUDENT. I don't romanticize that and I don't think I want to continue with a series that has that kind of plot line.

Something else that's nagging at me is that I feel like this series (if I choose to continue reading it) is going to turn into Say I Love You for me where I love the female friendships but not the actual couple. For me, no matter how good the friendships are or the characters in general, a romance's job is for me to root for the main couple. If it can't achieve that, then it ultimately failed its one job and no amount of good friendships or good characters can cover that. If others feel differently, that's fine, but I'm not really interested in reading a romance manga when I don't like the romance.

This is a pretty solid series, objectively speaking, and I'm still on the fence as to whether I'm going to read more or not, but it's got its positives.

Initial thoughts:

1. The artwork is as stunning as in the first volume.
2. Loved the character development of Suzume!
3. I already know that there will be a lot of misunderstandings happening as the story continues.
4. The friendship between Yuyuka and Suzume was great!
5. I need to read volume three right now!

yeah... no.

the first volume was fun and all but things got pretty weird in vol. 2. maybe it's bc i have a gut-feeling that she will end up with the teacher and he's kind of giving me the ick rn (ntm that there is a considerable age gap 🙃)

anyways, i will most probably continue the series wishing that things will get better 🤞🏻

How many times can I abuse the phrase ‘hot for teacher’ in a single series’ reviews? Shorthand or no, Suzume is dealing with her burgeoning affections for Shishio, while Mamura is putting out signals getting lost in the noise, and Yuyuka is revealed for who she is...

For all that, this is a relatively digestible bit of manga that I blew through quite expeditiously and then could barely remember what I read. It’s fun, but didn’t quite resonate like the first volume - good, but nothing stands out.

We start off with an outdoor school trip that feels like it doesn’t do much with the setting except getting Suzume lost, which is hardly original (although I literally laughed out loud at her imagined newspaper headline version of events). After seeing her kill it at fishing I was hoping we might veer into more interesting territory about her country skills coming to bear in her city life.

Instead, the whole ‘lost and then stranded with a boy’ trope occurs, this time with some added teachus interruptus. Again, it’s fine, just pedestrian and not unexpected. I don’t need aliens, but something beyond the norm to break the lane it’s in would have been welcome.

Then again, when the book does go off on its merry way, things can get a little strange. I don’t quite buy how much (and how quickly) everybody accepts Yuyuza’s true form, although the reactions of the student body are pretty funny (that place seems like an S&M hotbed). Her reasons for being so into Mamura are believably teenage girl and I mean that in the nicest way.

Suzume being miserable to another character who shows up towards the end is also super plausible (she might not have ruined her entire future as she seems to believe, mind). And Shishio is kind of an idiot since he draws a line but doesn’t draw it nearly hard enough.

It’s an interesting enough chain of events with less of a love quadrangle and more like a straight line of nobody connecting whatsoever. The art elevates everything here - it takes me being more thoughtfully critical of the story to not just go ‘art is brilliant’ and move on. This is one of the best drawn shojo I’ve ever read, I think.

Downsides, see last volume. This burgeoning teacher thing is still in the air and it feels like it’s going to steer harder into that skid than, say, Hatsu*Haru did. I maintain a wait and see - certainly it’s better this way than the original pitch presented in the author section, which is an even more incredibly dire ‘basic shojo template’. This mixes the formula up a little, but hopefully it pays off more going forward.

Your stance on stolen affection may influence your opinion on Mamura this time out, although I have to say this is the one time something like this didn’t really bother me (Suzume’s reaction to this in the moment and then after is beautifully drawn). Intent and force behind said intent do mean something.

3 star story, 4 star art, but no slaps so I’m not going to round up this time. I really do like this though - it’s one of the better examples of its type even as it works through some serious issues and I’m sorry I waited so long to get around to it.

"People's hearts don't move in the direction you want them to. . . . Forget what's on other people's minds…I can't even get my own to go in the direction I want it to."

I really really reallyyyy like these characters, but Shishio's actions really really reallyyyy bother me. So much so, that I really considered dropping this series because he is wayyyy too friendly with a student. 😅😅😅 I'll give him credit for *trying* to draw a line, but I'm like when Suzume's classmates are asking her if they are dating, that's an instant red flag IMO.

Granted, Suzume really likes him and I can understand why. He is such a fantastic person and really enjoy the carefreeness he brings on page. I honestly have no issues with her liking him, it's just Shishio and his interactions with her that bother me. He said in volume one that he doesn't mix/knows how to keep his public and private life separate, but I feel he is failing here. 😐

With that out the way though, Mamura is currently carrying everything in if I'll keep reading more volumes because GAH! I LOVED everything involving him in this volume! He is so so so sweet and I'm just like "Please hurry up Suzume and get over your feelings for Shishio and realize how AMAZING of a guy you have in front of you!!" Truly, he took some BIG steps this volume and I just need some reciprocation please! 😭😭😭

I did really like how Yuyuka is starting to act like her real self and how her friends encouraged her to do so. I thought that was really great and surprisingly sweet!

As much as I am not liking this potential (please please please don't be though) teacher-student romance, I do think Suzume's struggles and feelings are very real. It made her a relatable character and how she is working through what to do with her feelings. When she questions what people do in this kind of situations (referring to things with Yuyuka and Mamura) I felt that on a deep level because #same.

Overall, I'm going to keep reading, but hoping that with the ending, Shishio starts changing/being more definite with lines/boundaries and that Mamura starts being more on Suzume's mind.

Such a cute love-story that takes place in High-school. Suzume is so innocent but its still so much easy to relate to her sort of thinking when it comes to life and love.I do like sensei and find him very handsome and charming...but my heart flutters more when Mamura appears! (it was also like that when i watched the movie)

** 3.5 stars **

Originally I wasn’t going to continue with this series. I always try to read the first 3-4 vols before making a decision, but vol 1 just wasn’t doing it for me. That being said, my library had vol 2 so I decided to give it a try. I definitely enjoyed this vol way more than vol 1 and now I’m curious to read vol 3 to see what happens next!

I still like the art of Mika Yamamori. It's a graceful style that's clear and very fitting to the heartbreak/emotional scenes. I don't think I like this series as much though as Suzume and Sensei's "relationship," progresses and gets more complicated. If you're into the teacher-student relationship trope, then okay it's fine, but ... I don't know, it just gives me the ick and their relationship really shouldn't be getting more "complicated," because they're separated by like 8-9 years of maturation.

Half of me is like, "it's not that deep, it's just a manga," the other half is like, "I can't, Japan. Why persist the fetishization of young female students?"

This is the best shoujo manga art I think I've ever seen. I really like the drawing style of Yamamori!

i know shishio is hella illegal, but still i’m out here feeling the heart sparkle at their scenes. like, fr fr is this what good romance writing does? we love mamura pulling moves out too. what a slay. literally the fact that suzume is tomboyish, but we still show her having romantic feelings is so heartwarming. like, don’t let stereotypes control you vibes.

i’ve also given up reading the official translation. i don’t like them.

3.5 stars 。・:*˚:✧。 This was a fun quick read to help with my goodreads goal. I’m liking the characters a little more in this volume. Tbh not much seemed to have happened but there was a new love interest introduced who I am rooting for. The teacher student thing is still creeping me out considering she is 16 yikes.
