still absolutely in love with this series, and when I hit the last page of each volume I am always just aching for more. as a Lancaster who has always sympathized with York, I feel like this was written personally for me - shocking, gorgeous art and writing to match.

Requiem of the Rose King #11
Story and art by Aya Kanno
Reviewed December 5, 2023

Moving right along with this Shakespearean AU/fantasy and gracing the cover of this issue is William Catesby who at this point is nominally Hastings’ man but has always been first and foremost loyal to the House of York and Richard of Gloucester, and is one of the few who know Richard’s secret.

Here’s what is going on…

Edward IV is dead, and his obnoxious son (also) Edward is poised to become Edward V. The fact is that young Edward and his brother Richard are both very unpleasant characters. Little Ed is selfish and already exhibiting signs of tyranny, while Little Richard (not to be confused with the singer) is a sore loser. Meanwhile, Buckingham and Richard are collaborating to ensure that it's Richard who becomes king, and with those two brats I don’t have a problem with Gloucester sweeping them out of the way…although that won’t happen until a later volume. For now, we’ve got to deal with the Brat Princes.

One by one, Richard and Buckingham are getting rid of the opposition. Members of the Woodville family are eliminated, and Elizabeth is sent to a convent where she continues to conspire against Richard because there really is a plot against Gloucester. Elizabeth manages to get in touch with Hastings and lure him into her plot. She is also helped by Richard’s mother, Cecily, who has hated her youngest son since his birth. Throughout his life, she has berated him, calling him a demon, and now she reveals the secret of his body to Elizabeth, who plans to use it in a smear campaign to destroy Richard’s reputation.

Certain of Hastings’ duplicity, Richard and Bucky have secured the support of the Bishop of Ely and the Duke of Norfolk. These and other events lead up to the infamous council meeting that ends with bloodshed, with Catesby playing a major role…

Another excellent installment in an overall excellent series. I may not be a manga fan, but I’m definitely a fan of this particular manga series. The story is well developed, and the artwork is exquisite.

Long live the Rose King!

There's something very Macbethian about the way Jane operates - like the witches in that story, she doesn't so much wield the knife as let others know that there's a knife that can be wielded.

Just finished the whole series in 3 days, unbelievable and very recommended, the storyline with gender and acceptance, the feelings of intimacy and reflections of past experiences and what society and loved ones can sometimes induce into ones feelings of oneself with who we are if they don’t understand is approached and it hits home. Many parallels with my own life in a lot of the storyline which has been refreshing yet hard and beautiful to experience something which tells a story I understand when it’s not been a thing I’ve found before, safe to say this has become my most favourite manga series to date.

This take on Shakespeare's evisceration of Richard III and Edward VI continues to entertain. Aya Kanno takes a very unsympathetic character in The Bard's revisionist history and creates a very intriguing and conflicted person in the form of Richard III. Yes, all the people are beautiful and it is quite amusing to compare to actual portraits from the era. But at the same time, this is fun but also a great introduction to British history. The facts change a bit but do not deviate too greatly as to be completely misleading.

Story: The story has now progressed to the point where Richard and the Duke of Buckingham consolidate their allies and begin to turn a regency of 12 year old King Edward V into a kingship for Richard. Elizabeth Woodville, mother of the current young King, had been sent to monastery by Richard to reduce her influence on her son. But her plotting alongside Lord Hastings, Thomas Stanley, and the Bishop of Ely fail as Richard out-maneuvers her and has her allies executed. In this book, Richard's mother Cecily attempts to absolve herself of having birthed the demon Richard by attempting to kill him. Having failed, she will go to Elizabeth with her 'secret' in the hope that Elizabeth and her allies will seal Richard's fate. But all fail to realize the extreme loyalty of William Catesby.

I won't go into the differences in these chapters from the historical record - enjoy this story in the same light as one would enjoy a Shakespeare tale. Both take liberties with history but make for an entertaining tale. The illustration work remains excellent and there is plenty of (melo)drama to be had throughout. Especially with Catesby and his unwavering loyalty to Richard (and one of the few people who will remain with Richard to his death at Bosworth), Kanno does a great job of showing the sacrifices this volume's cover boy will have to suffer for his faith in the Duke of Gloucester and eventual King. Such intrigue! I am rooting for Richard and his team 💪❤️❤️

It’s not entirely black and white, but I have multiple ships with Richard...
- Buckingham x Richard
- Catesby x Richard
- William x Richard

On the other hand, I’m happy for Richard to pick and choose between all of them. I want them to succeed 💪💪

somebody should write a paper on the logic of misogyny in this story because on the one hand it's intriguing how richard suffers it due to his intersex condition like he is narratively plagued with Female Troubles but also this series is consistently like hos aint shit so what IS kanno going for, the people want to know!

also catesby's doomed loyalty is way more attractive than whatever the hell i'm meant to be getting off buckingham, i don't know anything about the war of the roses but i assume it ends with many dead people so hopefully he's on his way out soon!

3 stars

(please note three stars are in no way a recommendation for this series but rather an acknowledgement that i have accepted unrelenting misogyny in exchange for the unhinged gothic of it all. don't read it unless you are prepared to make this trade!!)

This volume didn't feel as powerful as the previous one but it's still very good. It's all plots and counterplots and everybody trying to get rid of their opposition.

In a series that's full of not-actually-so-nice people, there have still been a couple of cinnamon buns. Anne got already broken and now I'm fearing for Catesby. He's turned out to be the one who has retained his compassionate loyalty and damn Richard hasn't been able to tell him how much he appreciates that even though he thinks it (there's a spark of light left in him still). Shocks are thrown at Catesby's face and that bastard Buckingham acts on purpose as a wedge between him and Richard but still he stays. I'm crying!

*sigh*

Vol. 10 ★★★★☆

Another volume full of insane moments. It's fun to see Richard embrace himself after struggling with self-loathing for so long. That said, my favorite part of this volume is Catesby. His arc is just fantastic. Even though he has a strong moral compass, he's willing to abandon it in order to serve Richard. What a tragic character. I'm obsessed with him.

Yeah, so is this what watching Game of Thrones is like (with more lgbtqia+ rep)? Because I keep reading despite seeing Richard’s and everyone else’s lives descend into pain, despair, and madness. SO MANY FUCKING TRIGGER WARNINGS, TOO, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!! SOME OF THIS SHIT IS LITERALLY THE WORST AND TRAUMATIZING, MY GOD. I HATE THAT I CAN’T STOP READING THIS.

But also just let Richard be happy and safe... :(

Also, Catesby is the only good person, and maybe baby Edward, Anne, and Beth... but Catesby is my bro forever.

It's a 4 for the most part but I give a whole star for Buckingham and Richard getting it on in front of Cecily. Also when Buckingham wanted to tear the Bishop of Ely's guts out for touching Richard. That was a serve.

This volume was kind of heartbreaking because we get more insight into Catesby besides his overwhelming unrequited love and loyalty and care for Richard. Part of it is also born out of guilt (however unfounded) that Catesby let Richard go into the woods with his mother that traumatised Richard for life.

This volume was mostly about Richards secret being revealed.
And we have our first plothole.

Image abotu 50 soldierst hearing, that Richards has a hermaphrodite body and there even is a demand for Richard to show his body. Ok, he shows a little part of his body, full of scars. Then an uproar starts ... and then what? ... Why did no one repeat the demand and say "No, what about the hermaphrodite stuff?" I really was waiting for that. I BET they all wanted to know/ see.

Catesby is by far one of my favorite character of this series and the fact that he accepted that his loyalty for Richard will be his downfall is a huge step in his character development but also so heart-breaking. He’ll never be able to bring Richard to a bright path so he decided to fall with him instead.

I really like how Kanno rewrite the characters of those historical stories and at the end of each volumes I can’t wait to begin the next one.
