In this fifth installment of the bestselling Mail Order Bride series, two young couples seek freedom and love amidst slavery-rich Charleston, South Carolina.
When nineteen-year-old Benjamin arrives from South Africa, he is scheduled to be sold into slavery--but is set free by a Christian who takes him in as a paid worker. The man's son, Dan Johnson, befriends Benjamin, and the two make plans to start a cattle ranch in Texas. With bold dreams and the support and courage of their mail order brides, they struggle against bigotry and hatred to find their dream of happiness.

This is a great book! It has some very difficult circumstances and deals with the horrible issue of slavery. But, there's also friendships forged, love stories, and the message of salvation! One thing you can always count on from a book by Al and Joanna Lacy is that the salvation message will be presented in the book!
The characters are written brilliantly! I connected with many of them and became invested in their stories. Benjamin touched my heart the most. He suffers a lot in the book, but his life soon takes a turn, which is a reason for joy! Dan is one of the most generous people. He gives, expecting nothing in return.
The issue of slavery is definitely a difficult one. The prologue really explains how slavery came about and the ramifications of it. This book caused me to ponder and mourn with those who were in and are in slavery.
As much as I love this series, I didn’t know if I could handle this book with slavery, but this is a really good book! This whole series just might be my favorite series yet! The stories are not like others. I really have a hard time putting these books down!
Probably closer to 3.5 atars. The story was interesting enough, the time period was fascinating, and I loved the idea of ransoming your loved one from slavery. The characters were endearing, but the things that bothered me were the writing style and the way the Gospel was presented. The Christian message was very clear, but did not seem a natural part of the story, and the dialogue often seemed unnatural and stilted. I am still glad I read it, though.
This book in this series has it's beginning set in South Africa. It is a tale of slavery and ransom. Out of the ten books in the series, this one was my absolute favorite. Many times my eyes were filled with tears. A must read!
This book was very enjoyable and found it hard to put down. I have always enjoyed reading the books in this series, but this is the best thus far. Looking forward to book #6.
Another well done book by Al and Joanna! This story follows the lives of two slaves, their masters, mistresses, and their trials, errors, true love, mistakes, and most of all, God's saving grace!
Started out fairly well, but soon degenerated into the usual stereotypes. As soon as Benjamin became a Christian, everything went just great for him and he was the happiest, greatest person ever! Everyone liked him so much!
