When a man drives to the neighboring city for sex, it's more than likely he doesn't want to be seen...nor remembered.
As the eve of his partner's death looms, 40-year-old Captain Connor Marks only wants a willing guy in his bed to de-stress for the night. The hot young twenty-something-year-old, who taps him on his shoulder in a club to ask if he's okay, should not be that guy. Mac's too young, too inexperienced, and way too likable.
After breaking his no kissing rule And his one night stand rule And no sharing personal information rule Marks decides it's best to cut his losses and disappear. He never expects to meet Mac again and is stunned when his weekender shows up at his precinct as the new transfer.
Known for his strong work ethics, Marks has never been so conflicted before. Will he be able to focus on a case where the body count is rising while trying to decide if Mac will inevitably betray him? When push comes to shove, will he be able to make the critical professional decision that may cost him his job or Mac?
Marking What's Mine is a 40k word steamy romance mystery with violence as is common in the world of law enforcement. It is not suitable for readers under the age of 18.

I love the style of Gianni Holmes, but this book was a bit boring. The beginning was rather strange, meaning it starts with casual sex and later develops into something more complicated. Okay in itself, but on an emotional level this story lacked a few things. The inner monologues and insecurities were understandable but also not really exciting and remained too much on the surface. I was already thinking about not finishing it, even though it's not that many pages. Later, however, there was a bit of an exciting plot. Still, rather a poor example of the author's craft.
I was salivating as my mind ran wild, thinking of the package that awaited me beneath those clothes. Tight buns. I bet he had very tight buns. I would drop a couple hundred just to see that. Naked. Spread. Oiled. Spanked. I'd given myself a boner just thinking about him. 😳
And somehow I had this book in my smut folder...the sex scenes are nice, but don't expect too much of it, I definitely had that one categorized wrong.
This was my first read from this author. It was interesting. This is May/December romance. There was fair amount of steam, likable characters and mild angst. The background provided by both MCs made me like the book a lot but I felt like the investigative part was pushed to the side and went barely noticed. I really didn't care who the villain was. The sole focus was on the personal relationship and I think the book lost some edge because of it since the blurb strongly suggested crimes and intense police work. And it all felt a little rushed in the end. Plus this book had only one POV and that was a downer for me. Overall, it was an easy short read for the evening. This author has a lot of promise.
Marking What's Mine is the start of the Marksman's Tale series from not so new author Gianni Holmes who is putting this name on the map. With the Corporate Pride series doing so well, and my favorite books so far from the Till There Was You series about to have its anticipated follow up, this author is venturing out and churning out books faster than one can blink.
What started out as a one night stand ended up as a whole set of complications that police captain Connor Marks could do without. Getting involved with a younger man all over again was NOT what he was aiming for. But Mac made it so easy to keep coming back for more and Connor was finding it harder and harder to say no to.
It didn't help that the weekend had proven that chemistry was right or that they were compatible. The mere fact that both men had to look each other in the eyes the following week morning, both as neighbours and as employer/employee upset a whole kettle of fish.
Even with trying to avoid Mac, and putting rumors at work to bed, Connor could not prevent his over-protectiveness when it came to Mac. And when a series of deaths and criminal intent came into play, it would take more than feelings to protect the man he was coming to care for.
I won't lie, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would considering I took a step back at one time just to reevaluate. I am looking forward to the next installment and hope there is more action and heat.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
I really enjoyed reading marking what’s mine, although it wasn’t full of drama I didn’t once find it boring which I’ve struggled with a lot lately. The relationship we see slowly develop between Mackenzie and Connor is passionate as well as loving which was really nice to experience.
My only complaint would have to be that the ending felt very rushed but I’d still definitely recommend reading this book.
I debated even bothering to rate and review this, not only because I skimmed it, but because it probably wasn't even worth the mental effort. But alas, I can't resist.
The writing was subpar in every way. There were typos and mistakes that an editor should've caught, the dialogue was meh, the characters were not well developed, and the plot was a weird mess between a romance and a murder mystery. If someone had a gun to their head and were told to produce a romance novel, they might've written this book.
The book immediately begins with a drawn-out sex scene with the word c*** used so many times I think it's put a permanent groove in my brain. The "sexiness" is completely over the top. I felt bludgeoned. The author committed the cardinal sin of using the phrase "pillowy lips." The rest of the book follows...and I honestly can't bother to compose any more of a review.
Skip this book. Read a washing machine manual instead.
Very unrealistic plot and a lot of inaccurate police procedure. If you want to overlook the lack of authenticity and weak plot, there’s a few sex scenes and a HFN. It readable, although it could use a bit more editing.
Marking What’s Mine by Gianni Holmes is the first book in the Marksman series. I cannot wait for more. This story is fantastic. I loved this one. Great memorable characters, nice story arc, and a really great storyline. Connor, it has been four years since the death of his partner. He has panic attacks. He distracts himself by coming to a gay club. He is the captain of the Charlestown police department. Mac: comes over to see if Connor is okay. He is sweet, innocent, and kind. Also his first time at a gay bar. Turns out he is a rookie at the police department. There for off limits, but stopping love is not that easily done. They might be forbidden lovers but I loved their dynamic. They are perfect for each other.
When you want an intense fast-paced love story I highly recommend this one.
I thought that Connor and Mac had explosive chemistry, especially at the start of the book. Connor was a little jaded to start with but he quickly become hooked on Mac and his endearing personality. There was some low level angst where Connor tried to fight the pull they had but no real drama overall between them. I liked Mac and his determination to carve out something new for himself. I wish we'd gone a little bit deeper into his background to really appreciate his struggles - maybe if there'd been parts in his POV? The book had good pace but I wish it had delved a little more into the case they worked on; I thought a few things were left as loose ends or were predictably solved. I would also like to have had a bit more epilogue from the pair in their HEA (although I've read book 2 and I am glad they make an appearance there so we can learn some more).
Sometimes a one night stand turns into much more, making you feel much more... marking you theirs.
Connor is coming from a bitter divorce, looking just for an anonymous one night of sex. But when he meets Mac, he finds himself drawn to the younger man. He leaves him after a weekender and believes he will never see him again. Fate has other plans. Mac keeps popping up in his life - like as his next door neighbor... and the new Rookie at his job.
Funny monuments, hot and sexy moments... this book has a good mix. Mac and Connor have a connection that comes through in the story. I love how they try to avoid getting together but can't.
I received this book as an advanced reader's copy and voluntarily am leaving my honest review and recommendation.
Written as Connor's POV A first time read for the author for me. Connor was a straight shooter and tells it like it is. Lol hah Lady Fate has some great ideas or the writer does. A fantastic May/December story with a bit alpha personality happening with Connor. The ending was fantastic and includes some hot sexy and drama mixed in to scenes. The only thing with this one I would've loved Mac's POV as it definitely felt a one sided story. Police Captain, Connor 40 yrs is looking for some company in a night club even its in the next city over. Mac 21 yrs first time visiting a gay bar and meets Connor the two sizzle together. Mac was new to the area so they wouldn't meet again..right..lol
KU. 2 stars. This was Ok. It felt incomplete though, and really rushed. This was part romance, part murder mystery ~ except neither were well developed.
Conner & Mac are a first-name-only-one-night-stand that end up (predictably) being neighbors & co-workers. Conner is a police Captain and understandably doesn’t want a relationship with a 21yo rookie. But he keeps throwing mixed signals at Mac.
This is all from Conner’s POV, and because Conner doesn’t really get to know Mac, neither do we.
The end was sort of dumped on us in a “confession” by the “bad guy” ~ who we saw coming a mile away because it was obvious. There were a lot of plot holes and massive suspension of reality to buy in to all this. And I just couldn’t.

This was my first book by this author and I was surprised at how much I liked it. I'm always concerned when I read novellas that there won't be enough character development or the plot will feel rushed. The plot was well developed and the main characters were likable and you could feel the intense attraction. It's a great start to the series and I'm looking forward to the next book. I hope that we see Mac and Connor in the next installment. I didn't realize this was a spin-off from another series until after I finished, so I have some catching up to do. Recommend!
Fun to read, but I'm not sure how realistic it was
Do police not have fraternization rules like the military? I honestly don't know, but I would have thought that they do, which makes sleeping with a subordinate a serious infraction that Connor would be subject to as the senior officer. On top of that, where was IA in all of this?
The romance between Connor and Mac was sweet, and I enjoyed the excitement of some of the police work, but there always some detail that felt slightly off from what I would think it's realistic.
Giving up on the possibility of any heart entanglement, Connor goes out of town to get his steamy fix. Okay which is hilarious when he meets Mac. Who maybe be younger but the chemistry is of the charts, but it just a one nighter..or two. Can the earth just swallow him whole when his brother invites his hot neighbor over because lookie here Oops nope he is his new neighbor, oh look a new rookie at the precinct! Will duty keep them apart or age? Mac is slowly worming his way into what once was Connor's cold farge of emotionless hookup.
This was my first book by the author and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Yes, there were too many convenient coincidences, but it was easy to overlook them and just concentrate on the story and characters. Their attraction was immediate and intense, and I loved every minute of them being together. Recommended!
This was not for me. Not the story, not the guys in it, not the writing... Nothing really raised anything outta me here. I rushed through it and while writing this now I forgot most of the story already. There're stories that just work for some ppl and not others. This was not for me.
I must confess, my interest in Marking What’s Mine was piqued by a promotion for book two in Gianni Holmes’ A Marksman Tale series and I decided to give it a go. Even though both can be read as standalones, my desire for suspense novels made me want to start from the beginning.
As Captain of the Charlestown Police Department, Connor Marks drives miles from town when he needs to escape his nightmares. It helps to keep his needs, and penchant for loose guys who will sleep with anyone, a dirty secret. Hitting a gay bar known for hooks ups, he expects his usual – and so does his body – “raw sex”. When he sets eyes on Mac, the young man returns his desire and more.
Don’t get discouraged… the start of this story is truly all about the sexual hook up, with blunt honesty. This gives you Connor’s mindset. Yet, somehow all that changes. Even with Connor’s self-assured cockiness, the course of this night ends differently for him, so much so he doesn’t trust himself with Mac. And when he takes the walk of shame the next morning, he can’t get the man out of his head.
As fate would have it, Cupid is no match for distance, or self-imposed rules. Because Mac ends up not only moving in next door, but is Connor’s newly assigned rookie. Now Connor is ambushed with a conundrum of feelings: shock, betrayal, confusion, anger, hurt, determination, pride, jealousy, need, desire….
What works for me in 'Marking What’s Mine' is the “normal speak”. It’s not elegant prose or precise grammar, it’s normal, stunted, stammered speak… sometimes off-kilter, but for Connor and Mac’s gritty relationship, it’s true to who they are.
With almost a twenty year age difference between the men, and a painful past, Connor has walls he’s determined to keep erect as he thinks Mac, “didn’t deserve a broken old man with trust issues.” Not to mention departmental code of ethics. But, when a small-town murder and a little “Officer’s auction” get thrown into the mix, alongside Mac’s persuasively mature ways, stubborn Connor is forced to recognize that the rookie may be too hard to resist.
The entirety of Marking What’s Mine is told from Connor’s point of view, and although there were times when I wanted to “hear” Mac, Ms. Holmes does a wonderful job of conveying the young man’s feelings through conversation and one delightfully insightful brother…. I did however find myself wondering what in the world Connor looks like. I hope my visual was accurate.
If I’m honest this is not my usual four heart recommendation. Did I say I like suspense? It’s here, but not throughout the book, and the case is very tidy. What works for me in Marking What’s Mine is the “normal speak”. It’s not elegant prose or precise grammar, it’s normal, stunted, stammered speak… sometimes off-kilter, but for Connor and Mac’s gritty relationship, it’s true to who they are. Which makes this quick-paced read a simple joy, and Gianni an author worth watching to see where her maturing writing takes her.
An entertaining and enjoyable read. It's really centered on the romance and not on the case being investigated which importance to the story is in the way it helps the development of the relationship between the 2 MCs. In any case, I liked the characters and the story.
I liked this story it was really good. Mac was sweet and so open, while Conner was so jaded. They worked well together and I loved. I just hate that the ending seemed so undone. On to the next one, I'm excited for it.
Good storyline, characters strong, cop romance some drama but overall a very good book. Ms Holmes did a great job of giving good backgrounds on Connor and Mac.
Riveting. We readers are more in the Captain's head than anyone else's. I felt the chemistry between the two MCs. It sizzled. I will read the next in the series. Gianni Holmes is a good writer.
Unless I missed something, the blurb doesn't quite match up with the story content as Connors ex isn't dead.... But, that being said, this was a good short introduction to this new series.
