Diaspar is a city existing a billion or so years in our future. Earth is a dried-up husk, but within the city, ultimate perfection has been achieved. The buildings and other accoutrements of the metropolis are automatically maintained; food is produced by machines which never need human tending; and the citizens are immortal. When they become bored, they simply dissolve into the "memory banks" and return to life a thousand or a million years later.
But there was one man, not content with this utopia, who was convinced that life existed outside Diaspar. He was determined to upset the perfect applecart into which he had been born: the first new life born on Earth in ten million years!
