Chelsea and Miss May's crime solving skills have become legendary in Pine Grove and even outside of the small town. They're busier than ever at the farm which may be a good thing because Chelsea hasn't sorted out her love life yet. While Hank is away a new, very unexpected suitor arrives in town to woo Chelsea. When the nasty developer Hank Rosenberg decides to tear down some small, local businesses and build a new megamart the townspeople are incensed. The mayor seems to be on board with the project making Teeny suspicious. When Chelsea and Miss May discover Hank's briefcase left behind in their barn they attempt to track him down to return it. Unfortunately they arrive too late and Hank is already dead. Sunshine Flanagan, the new police chief ignores the signs and announces the death was from natural causes. With a rash of break-ins in town and now another murder, Sunshine is worried more about the town's reputation. The locals, including Hank's wife, beg Chelsea and Miss May to solve the mystery and find out who killed Hank.

This mystery is fairly slow. Since Hank was so unlikable I didn't care who killed him. It could have been anyone! It seems like almost the entire town is mad over the new store. I can see both sides of the issue and I would probably protest too. There are suspects and red herrings galore and it is impossible to guess who did it until Chelsea happens to stumble across the evidence. The way she continually traps the killer using her signature karate moves is rather silly. I read these books more for the food than the story and I wish there were recipes. I want to try the Every Berry Pie and the Bodacious Berry Bake (a cobbler). Not to mention cinnamon rolls and apple cider doughnuts. Yum! There are so many funny moments here but some are moments that are funny actually make you think about certain issues like homelessness, mental illness and what language to use to describe a corpse.

Chelsea is a bit of a silly character. She cries less but she still cries a lot, she's kind of dim at times but she has a good heart. I love how she still hates coffee but continually drinks it for the caffeine. Miss May is a tough lady. She's loud, has a healthy ego and doesn't take no for an answer. I still find Teeny rather annoying but this time her "stories" come in handy. See-saw the miniature horse lends her listening skills and offers her opinion for Chelsea. I love a good animal sidekick and See-Saw's role in the story is elevated a tiny bit here. I wish there was more of her.

This is a fun, light series that's good for bedtime reading or when you need some cheering up. I hope to read the next one if I have time before my free KU subscription expires.
Hank Rosenberg finally appears on page. He is a nasty character who values money over all else. He's willing to tear down schools, homes and break rules in order to build his mega size pools, buildings, etc. He just doesn't care.

We meet more of the townspeople of Pine Grove in this novel- finally! Poor Sudeer, once again is in the spotlight because he works for Rosenberg. Sudeer needs the money badly to support his growing family and this controversial project makes him public enemy #2. He doesn't deserve the wrath of the townspeople who seem ready to tar and feather him. Liz, the journalist, finally seems to be doing something about putting Pine Grove on the map. She helped solve the last case and now she wants to get involved again. I'm beginning to like her for her willingness to continue with the small town paper and her determination to get a good story. Petey has finally opened his own restaurant with Teeny's blessing and he's struggling. He sounds like a great chef but Teeny may be right that the locals aren't ready for fancy cooking. There's a charming subplot about his restaurant that adds to the coziness of the story.

Arthur, who owns the gas station, is the most vocal protester of them all. He fears what the Massive Mart will put all the local shops out of business. He's a bit cranky. Petunia, the florist, is also cranky. She has to take time away from her senior poker games to protest. I feel bad for her. She already lost her house and now she's in danger of losing her livelihood. We never do find out what happened with her grandkids. I imagine they were scared away by her abrasive personality. Deb, a legal secretary, is a bit of an odd woman. She's searching for love... for her cat Sandra Day O'Connor. Deb is deadly serious about her matchmaking but Sandra can't have just any old tom cat as her life partner. I think Deb wins as the most eccentric member of Pine Grove.

Big Dan, an auto mechanic, is about the only townsperson not upset over the Massive Mart. He sounds like an old hippie and seems to go with the flow. It turns out he has a unique passion and career path planned out. He seems like a good guy but is he really as chill as he appears? Master Skinner, Chelsea's former karate teacher, presents himself as a zen master. He seems a little odd to me but his character isn't all that developed. Chelsea has fond memories of him but Miss May doesn't trust him after learning some new information.

Sunshine Flanagan emerges here as a formidable foe for Chelsea. She is not a very good policewoman if she is more interested in covering up crimes than solving them. I think there's some personal feelings involved in her attitude towards Chelsea. I do not like this woman. Mayor Delgado up to now has always been supportive of the town and keeping the small town charm. Now she supports the big development project. Of course the mayor would recognize that this project will bring jobs to people and help people save money by shopping in bulk at a discount. I can see why she would be pro Massive Mart. Unfortunately for her that makes her seem like a bad guy. Is she corrupt? It sure seems like it and this story made me not like her very much. Another suspect is obviously Hank's wife Susan. She's a little odd. She seems like a high-brow snooty person yet she's open with Chelsea and Miss May. Or is she? Susan bamboozles Chelsea and Miss May into going to look for the murderer perhaps to throw suspicion on someone other than herself.

The next most likely suspect is Wallace. Wallace is new in town and likely homeless. He talks to himself, dances on the street and is all around crazy. He creeps people out and they don't like him. I know a park full of Wallaces and know how creepy they can be but Chelsea shows some compassion for the man. She loves watching him do his own thing and literally dance to the beat of his own drummer. This moment saves the plot of the crazy homeless person stereotype. I really hoped he wasn't the killer yet if he is perhaps he can get the help he needs.

The newest resident of Pine Grove is Germany Turtle, son of previous murder victims. I was beginning to think he didn't actually exist. This guy is super weird. He's socially awkward but he has a wonderful positive attitude. He's sweet but also creepy in pursuing Chelsea. Since she doesn't exactly say "no" he decides to keep trying. He comes on a bit too strong at times but he does mean well. Germany is very very innocent and naive and I hope Chelsea doesn't break his heart. Hank doesn't show up until towards the end. I don't like how Chelsea left things with him. Love triangles annoy me. She should ignore both men and wait until someone better comes along or no one.

When a local developer works to change the face of the quaint small town of Pine Grove with a new, massive store the citizens stand up in protest. The only supporter seems to be the mayor.

At the same time, a rise in burglaries alarms the town, but the new police chief brushes off everyone’s concerns. She appears to have her own agenda.

After a town meeting, Chelsea and her aunt, Miss May attempt to return a briefcase to the developer. Instead, they find a dead body. When the Police Chief claims the man died of natural causes, Chelsea, Miss May and the entire town believe a murderer is in their midst. Since the police are not investigating, the local sleuths begin a new case.

I continue to enjoy this series. The books are well written and entertaining. The plot moves at a good pace that keeps the reader engaged. It was hard to put down. The characters are well-developed. More than one evokes a giggle. I recommend this book. It can easily stand alone. Do yourself a favor and read the series from the beginning.

Chelsea and Miss May find themselves once again involved in solving a murder mystery when a developer is found dead, face down in a plate of one of Miss May’s pies. With so many potential suspects, can these ladies find the killer before he strikes again?

This is everything you expect from a great cozy mystery; humor, madcap adventure, great storytelling, lovable characters, and a mystery to solve.

He has come to get a major shop built but it would mean knock down several favourite buildings. Then he is killed and everyone wants it to be classed as a natural death. They believe it was murder but who would kill him? Will they be able to find who did it? See if they will

Chelsea was better in this book though Miss May is still my favorite. A few formatting issues with the ebook. The storyline was good enough.

The Best of hers that I’ve read so far

This was a great read, and it had be stumped until the very end. Definitely not a predictable ending!!!! I’m ready for her next book!!! I purchased all 20 of her books (in 2 large sets of 10), and it has been so worth my time and money. Her books are ‘laugh out loud’, clean and great fun. So enjoyable!!!!

“Berried Alive” earns 5/5 Every Berry Pies...Deliciously Entertaining!

First, I’m a sucker for a good “play on words,” and along with the front image of a mouthwatering “bodacious berry bake,” it’s hard not to judge this book by its cover. It didn’t disappoint! With the mayor’s blessing and to the chagrin of the local businesses, developer Hank Rosenberg hopes to introduce a mega store to the Pine Grove community, so did someone decide murder was the only way to stop it? The developer dies, face planted in a plate of berry pie, and only the police think it natural causes. Add the hub-bub at the Brown Cow coffee house sparking more than passing attention for Chelsea, Aunt May, and Teeny, and with Wayne out of town, Germany Turtle’s more than admiration for Chelsea is a curious dilemma. Brilliant! Chelsea Thomas, the writing duo of Chelsea and Matt Thomas, have penned delightful cozy entertainment with a protagonist who also shares their pen name...Chelsea Thomas, and with the first-person narrative, it adds sort of an autobiographical air, a touch of realism. Although the story follows a well-established cozy formula, it has a level of complexity and misdirection that challenged my inner Sherlock. It is well written and easy-to-read with sensory-filled language, entertaining humor, and traditional characters illustrated by realistic dialogue. I personally enjoy the use of titles for each chapter, a literary technique most authors do not employ, but I like trying to determine their hidden meaning. As another reader mentioned, I, too, am on Team Wayne!

Chelsea may have shared a sweet slow dance with the detective - but then he disappeared for months on end to testify in a case in New York city. So that left the vicious Flanagan to be appointed Police Chief upon the retirement of the previous chief. And boy, that is one redhead who is more interested in stats that crime solving.

Chelsea might think her intrepid detective friend is helping her out behind the scenes, but is he?

He certainly did not turn out to be much of a communicator when he was abroad, and seems very vague and not committed now.

Germany Turtle, however, is a devoted admirer and wanna be beau - and tries to show his fondness and appreciation for Chelsea in sweet, yet awkward, ways.

Miss May ad Teeny seem to be on their usual streak of wreak have, prove friendship, and be quirky.

Aside from Miss May, and perhaps Teeny, the tiny horse See Saw and Germany Turtle seem to spend more time and effort with Chelsea than anyone else who is not trying to murder her.

Is there still a chance for Chelsea and her detective? What is up with that crazy mayor? And Germany Turtle - is he worth the awkward? He is cute, sweet, sincere, and makes himself present - unlike a certain detective.

Another wild and wacky small town murder / mystery adventure!

I continue to enjoy this cozy mystery series. I find them to be well written and very entertaining. The plot moves at a steady pace that keeps you engaged. The characters are well-developed and each instalment they are being fleshed out more. Teeny always evokes a giggle or two, and I rarely laugh out loud.

Chelsea, her aunt May and Teeny are at it again - Chelsea finds a dead body and it looks suspicious but the new police chief Sunny Flannigan (formerly Det. Wayne Hudson's partner) is calling it death by natural causes!

The town is protesting a Massive Mart being built, and it could affect Teeny, as well as the rest of the town’s independent businesses. What develops has our amateur sleuths sifting through each new clue, leading them to all sorts of danger. Chelsea is being admired by Germany Turtle who had fallen in love with her reading all the articles about her sleuthing when he was living in Africa. Det. Wayne Hudson has been out of town for several months as a witness in a trial, but he does come back and wants to see were their dance leads.

I highly recommend this book/series. It can easily stand alone but I recommend you read the series from the beginning.

Chelsea Thomas (actually Chelsea and Matthew Thomas) obviously had a lot of fun writing "Berried Alive", which is both a good and a bad thing. It's good because the book is genuinely screwball funny. It's bad because the reader ends up with, effectively, two books in one, a comedy and a murder mystery.
It's not something that many authors can pull off successfully, and I think Chelsea Thomas didn't quite knit the two strands together. That said, it is an enjoyable and mostly fluffy read.
Developer Hank Rosenberg wants to rip the heart out of Pine Grove and build a brand spanking new Megamart. People aren't happy and Hank ends up face down in a plate of Miss May's 'Every Berry Pie.'
The only fly in the ointment is new police chief Sunshine Flanagan who, despite the evidence, seems determined to call it as natural causes.
Obviously, Chelsea, Miss May and Teeny have no alternative but to investigate.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has a new suitor in the temporary absence of Wayne. Germany (yes, Germany) Turtle, who speaks as if he is in a 19th century romance novel - his speech really is bizarre.
The book is interesting enough to keep you going, but not quite good enough to provoke any excitement - and the denouement is pretty cheesy and unlikely.

This book was just as fun and hilarious as the other three that I've read. I love when Chelsea, her aunt May and Teeny go sleuthing. They had good cause this time. A man was dead, but the new police chief (formerly Det. Wayne Hudson's partner, Sunny Flanagan) was calling it death by natural causes, when it was obviously a murder. Not only did another body show up, but the town was protesting a Massive Mart being built, and Chelsea was being admired by a guy named Germany Turtle who had fallen in love with her (he says) reading all the articles about her sleuthing when he was living in Africa. Wayne had been out of town for several months as a witness in a trial, but he did come back. (Just for the record, I'm Team Wayne and always will be!) ;) The showdown with the killer was awesome, and Chelsea once more got to use her karate skills. The perp was definitely a surprise to me.

I'm always anxious to read the next book in this series. Teeny continues to crack me up! There's an excerpt from book 5 at the end of this one!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book via BookSprout, and my opinions are my own.

This is the fourth book in the Apple Orchard Cozy series. It is a standalone book with no cliffhanger ending. You can certainly start with this book in the series as the author does provide quick summaries of the events from prior books but then you miss all of the fun of these characters.

After a town meeting regarding a new town development, Aunt May and Chelsea realize the developer has left his briefcase behind. When they try to return it, they find him dead. However, the police chief thinks it was just an accident so no investigation. Chelsea and Aunt May disagree so they decide to investigate with Teeney tagging along. Busy as Chelsea is with the investigation, she wonders why her detective has somewhat abandoned her after their romantic dance. Well, in comes Germany Turtle hoping to catch Chelsea's eye.

This is a fun cozy series. The characters are well developed and entertaining. The story moves along at a good pace. Plus, I enjoy the sub-stories related to the townspeople and Chelsea's love life.

The theme of Berried Alive is preserving the integrity of Pine Grove, New York. Local developer, Hank Rosenberg wants to tear down a few local businesses in order to build a Massive Mart. The citizens of Pine Grove are enraged. When Town Hall is flooded, Miss May decides to host a big town meeting in her barn. Chelsea helps her bake 100 miniature versions of her famous Every Berry pies to give to the attendees. After the meeting is over, they discover that Hank has left his briefcase behind. So the sleuths decide to return it to him. Unfortunately, when they get to him he is already dead, leaving them with another murder to solve. As far as Chelsea's love life goes, Detective Wayne has been out of town for a few months. He was a star witness in a big trial. But he has competition when he returns. Germany Turtle has arrived in town and has a huge crush on Chelsea. This is such a fun cozy mystery series. Each book showcases the 3 sleuths (Chelsea, Miss May, Teeny) with humor. I enjoy reading about their adventures.

A big developer wants to tear down a building on the main street to build a huge "Massive Mart". Hank Rosenburg is the most hated man in town right now. The home town people call a town meeting, and it is held out at the Apple Orchard. Even the town Mayor is behind the "Massive Mart" for the town! Who is she kidding, help the town? No way! After everyone leaves, Chelsea and Miss May find Rosenburg's briefcase. They go to take it to him and find him in his work trailer instead of home. He is dead with his face down in Miss May's Berry Pie! Not only is this going on, but Chelsea and Detective Wayne have been separated for a while. He is a witness at some big trial. In steps Germany. He has his eyes on Chelsea and isn't willing to give her up without a fight. Who is the killer? Whom will Chelsea choose? You will need to read the book to see. Mystery plus romance is on the menu.

For a small town, they are a hotbed for murder. With so many of the townspeople looking particularly guilty in this story, it is not an easy case to solve. What is crazy is that the police don’t even think a murder was committed! Thank goodness Chelsea and her aunt, Miss May, are determined to expose the killer. Of course, I cannot ignore the third member of their sleuthing team, Teeny. She is one person who goes to extraordinary lengths for others to take notice.

Has Wayne, the local police detective ignored Chelsea for too long? Another suitor is on the scene and trying exceptionally hard to win Chelsea’s attention. I love a bit of romance along with a good mystery.

This story was extremely entertaining and fun to read. If you love reading a well-told story weaving mystery and romance, then this book is one you must add to your to-be-read list.

Massive Mart (aka Walmart) is coming to the small town of Pine Grove, and everyone is up in arms, except the developer and realtor, and the mayor. The son of couple last murdered (read the books in order), shows up and professes his undying love for Chelsea, and he only knows her from what he's read in the newspapers. Murder of the developer/realtor and the new chief of police rules it "natural causes" and can't be bothered to take it seriously. Now Aunt May and Chelsea are on the hunt to solve what they have determined, is really murder.

While I like the story, I only gave this story 3 stars as I can no longer stand Teeny. She is a true distraction with her wild hair ideas taken from a short term tv series she loves. She jumps the gun often, making the other characters backpedal, when the story was going along smoothly. Her antics, in my opinion, don't add to the story line, only detracts and distracts. Hopefully someone will murder off Teeny in the upcoming novels.

Chelsea and Miss May begin on the trail of several mysteries. On top of that, Pine Grove is outraged at the plans of the “infamous” real estate developer, Hank Rosenberg. His planned Massive Mart May even affect Teeny, as well as the rest of the town’s independent businesses. What develops has our amateur sleuths sifting through each new clue, leading straight to danger. Then, just as the way seems to open for Detective Wayne, an interesting introduction brings a humorous and intriguing possibility. The characters in the Apple Orchard series keep developing. I highly recommend Berried Alive and the other novels by Chelsea Thomas. As well as receiving an ARC, I purchased a copy to support the authors.

This is a great little cozy mystery series that is super funny and pretty darn cute. I had not heard of this author before finding this ARC, so I went back and read the other three books in the series before reading this one and I'm glad I did. This series can be read as a stand alone, but it works even better being read in order. I'm glad I started at the beginning.

This book has great characters, funny story line, bits of mystery and good descriptions to detail. It has a hint of a possible romance in the making, but it for sure is not the main premise of the story.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

Would I read more from this author? Yes

Another case for Aunt May, Chelsea and Teeny to solve in their hometown. No one wanted Hank Rosenberg's Massive Mart to replace the Rosenberg building so the entire town could be considered "suspects" when Hank was found dead in the construction trailer. But the new Sheriff Flanagan called it a natural death!! Chelsea's detective love interest is out of town as a witness on another case, so they don't have a friendly in to the Police Department. As usually happens when the three amateur sleuths start investigating, weird things happen. Is the Mayor and Sheriff in cahoots, is the stranger to be trusted, could Master Skinner be hiding something? What about Germany Turtle, whose parents were killed in a previous tale. You don't want to miss this "who dunit"!

Yet another great addition to the series, I was very surprised by the additional suitor who has come to town to woo Chelsea !!! Miss May and Chelsea really have things cut out for them this time when basically the whole town has a motive for murder and there seems to be a good motive for quiet a few even those who they really hope didn't do it. I loved the extra tension in the book with the countdown on for the Massive Mart which you could feel the worry of the town yourself and I needed to know not only who killed the dastardly Hank. At the end of the book I still had questions ... will Big Dan go through with his idea and can the hipsters help Petey be successful! 🤔😉😆

The Apple Orchard series is one of my favorites, and Berried Alive is another hit. An unpopular developer dies face first in Aunt May's Every Berry Pie and Chelsea, Aunt May and Teeny must solve the mystery. OK, they don't have to, but of course they will, because they must exonerate their pie. And, you know, because they're nosy. Aunt May is a force to be reckoned with, and wherever the three amigos go mayhem follows, which always makes for a fun read.

Another good mystery with Miss May and Chelsea. Monster Mart is coming to town and nobody is happy about it except the developer. When he turns up dead everybody is a suspect. While the new Chief of Police determines his death as natural Miss May & Chels beg to differ. So they set out to solve the murder and lo and behold they find another body! Lots of interesting developments including a new love interest for Chels. Very entertaining!

Somewhat simplistic writing style

Although this is not the first book in the series, it is the first one that I have read. On the plus side, the plot is good and the main characters are interesting. I am not sure that I can explain yet why I was not overly excited about the book. It seems choppy, and I cannot get an image in my head of what the area looks like. There is not enough detail. The story does not seem to flow. Also, there are several typos and that is a pet peeve of mine. I am going to give the series another chance and read one more book.

This series of book's are absolutely brilliant. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down until you have finished it.
I really enjoy the way that Chelsea writes, the comedy throughout with the main characters is great.
I've never been able to solve the mystery myself, so I'm always guessing throughout the book, which again for me makes for a great cozy mystery.
If you are a cozy mystery fan then this series is definitely for you.

While I enjoyed the mysteries set forth in this book, I found them overshadowed by the annoying characters. Also, the incidence that brings about the mystery was too stereotypical for me. The relationship between Miss May, Teeny and Chelsea seems at times almost snippy and sometimes overly silly. It was hard to take them seriously as "sleuths." I guess overall I was expecting something more and this book just didn't deliver for me.

This starts with a mini mystery with Chelsea and Miss May figuring out who the Post-It note bandit is at the Brown Cow. However, things turn ominous when a local developer that the town was picketing ends up dead in Miss May's berry pie. These are well written, entertaining stories. They are funny and engaging. The characters become like old friends that you cant wait to visit. I voluntarily reviewed a copy I received from Booksprout.

The sleuthing team of Miss May, Chelsea, and Teeny come together to save the town. Just when it seems as if there isn't any help for the town, the ladies face trouble head on. As always the ladies have tons of fun as they tackle any mystery big or small. This book is another great addition to the series and it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Another great cozy little mystery murder by Chelsea Thomas. Miss May and Chelsea discover the most hated man in all of Pine Grove dead. The suspects line up. It seems everyone had a motive to kill Hank. Then another man turns up dead. Are they related? Is it the same killer? Are they looking for two suspects now? Mix the murder mystery with a Chelsea's new love interest Germany and Detective Wayne. Good read! Good plot. Nice to see the characters continue to grow on Thomas' pages.

If you can by-pass the ditzes and the air-heads, you might glean a halfway decent story, but its a difficult proposition. All in all, it is most certainly not anywhere near one of my favorites and I most certainly will not be reading anymore from this author. This is the second book in this series that I have read, and it is even worse than the first. So, Ms. Thomas is added to my authors non grata list.
