The Summer Retreat

Rate this book
Join USA TODAY bestselling author Sheila Roberts for a seaside escape to the beaches of Moonlight Harbor

Celeste Jones has plans for a perfect summer with her boyfriend (and hopefully soon-to-be fiancé)—until he dumps her to be with the woman he’s had on the side for months. Heartbroken and furious, Celeste resolves to move on. When the going gets tough, the tough…okay, the not-so-tough go to the beach.

As soon as school lets out for the summer, she waves goodbye to her first-graders, packs up her bikini and heads for Moonlight Harbor, where she knows her big sister, Jenna, will receive her with open arms. Jenna could probably use some help at the Driftwood Inn, and Celeste is happy to do chores around the place in exchange for a relaxing summer escape. She just needs something—or someone—to distract her from her troubles.

Finding The One can be tricky, and Jenna is determined to make sure Celeste gets it right this time around. Not that Jenna’s an expert. She’s still trying to sort out her own love life. But if both sisters listen to their hearts, eventually they’re bound to discover that life—and love—is good at the beach.

The Summer Retreat by Sheila Roberts

Contemporary small town, clean romance. Multiple points of view.
Lots of characters give the story charm.
Third book in the Moonlight Harbor series. Can be read as a standalone. I hadn’t read the previous books and had no trouble follow the characters.

Man hungry. The heroine had no other life goals than finding and marrying the right man. The explanation behind it was that she never knew her father. Nothing made her happy and she whined about being alone at various events and holidays.
I understand wanting to find love but hated this premise. The entire time reading this I wanted to shake her, telling her to have some self respect and try loving herself first.
The romance in this book missed the mark.

The Summer Retreat is the perfect book to cozy up with on the beach!

This was my first read by Sheila Roberts and can definitely see why she has so many fans!

The Summer Retreat focuses on Celeste who has a pattern of falling for too many wrong men. Emerson her current boyfriend is a cop and he just doesn't wan't to commit to her fully. Sadly, Celeste finds Emerson cheating on her with another woman and she's had it!

Celeste finds herself back in the Driftwood Inn with her sister Jenna. Celeste soon begins a journey of her own dating different men with her sister Jenna trying to support her in finding the "right" man.

What I loved about this one? Sheila does a wonderful job with the characters... all so relatable and I really enjoyed Celeste!

I found the story to be a tad predictable but nonetheless it was a quick and fun beach read.

Overall, 3.5 stars :)

Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin/Mira for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Celeste has been burned her boyfriend, a man she thought would propose only to find he’s been cheating on her. In response, she ventures out to Moonlight Harbor, the seaside town her sister has settled into after purchasing an inn. Celeste, a teacher, takes the summer off to help at the inn while trying to figure out where she’s gone wrong in her love life. She had sparks and chemistry with her last beau, but that just ended in heartache so she decides to go for the safer bet, the town’s pastor, Paul. He’s good-looking and even if he doesn’t make her heart race, he’s a steady and sure bet, not someone likely to cheat on her. Not like Henry, the guest in cabin twelve, an annoying man, poking and prodding at every turn, but one that heats her up!

The Summer Retreat
was an entertaining read, kind of a Hallmark movie type of romance, where lots of things go wrong and are a bit whacky. I quickly flipped (listened) through the pages, but this is one of those stories where I had mixed feelings. I felt bad for Celeste because she was duped by a cheating loser at the beginning, but I was also annoyed with her. She ignores her instincts that tell her she’s not a good match for the Pastor Paul but goes along with the “romance” because he’s the safe bet, a man who’ll never cheat. I don’t like reading a romance where the heroine is all tied up with one man while she’s meant to be with another. It was clear to me and should’ve been clear to Celeste that Pastor Paul wasn’t the guy for her, and yet the situation plays out for almost the entire book.

I was also irritated with her sister, Jenna, who kept pushing her toward Paul when Celeste didn’t seem all that hot on him. I have to say Jenna’s romantic situation is another frustration: a love triangle, that wasn’t resolved in this story. Maybe it will be in the next book?

It does sound like I didn’t really like the story after writing all of my complaints, but I did. I’m happy for how things turned out for Celeste, and I did have some laughs along the way. I switched back and forth from my e-copy to the audio book and found Ann Gideon’s voice pleasant and upbeat.

A copy was kindly provided by MIRA in exchange for an honest review.

Sheila Roberts has written a delightful story. The Summer Retreat will likely be a popular choice for summer reading. This is the perfect type of escape story for the beach. Basically, Celeste is escaping her cheating ex by going to visit her sister at Moonlight Harbor. Celeste will help her sister run The Driftwood Inn for the summer. The town has a benevolent atmospheric presence that will be familiar to anyone who has lived in a small town. The characters of the town, etc. are kindly, gracious, and well meaning, although perhaps intrusive and gossipy at times. Celeste is sympathetic because she's at sixes and sevens about love and life. She's of an age to settle and start a family, and this is a vexing situation for her. Celeste is also resilient, capable and relatable to women who understand that your heart and your head will sometimes disagree. She has a wonderful bond with her sister which is heartening in the overall picture. This may be the most momentous summer of her life! The journey Celeste makes is transformative and progressive. When summer ends, will Celeste be strengthened and encouraged by her choices? Summer Retreat is a light read that's wholly enjoyable, charming and enticing. You can't beat it for a day relaxing poolside. Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin MIRA for an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Head to Moonlight Harbor for more of Sheila Roberts’ typical small-town charm in The Summer Retreat. It’s the third book in the series, revisiting familiar characters and adding some new drama into the mix, too.

Celeste Jones heads to the beach, determined to get over her recent heartbreak. However, as her sister Jenna’s experience will attest, romance in Moonlight Harbor is no easy feat to maneuver. It’s entertaining to see the story unfold, full of heartwarming and humorous moments, as Celeste tries to find the man right for her.

If you enjoy contemporary romance, especially in small-town settings, check out The Summer Retreat.

Fiction, beach read
Rating: 3/5

I received a digital ARC copy of this book from Mira and NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

This is the third book in a series. I read the first two before reading this book to put it in context although they could easily stand alone. The books are light beach reads which unfortunately felt weighed down by too many characters.

I enjoyed the first book but the following books seemed to be weighed down with many characters. The description and history of the characters were informative but not entirely necessary to plot and resolution. Maybe this was intentional to set the pace for upcoming books in the series.

Overall, a delightful, easy read with a lot of Christian undertones and nods to other women’s literature authors. This book centers mostly on Celeste Jones, who decides to move to Moonlight Harbor Inn for respite. Jenna Jones, her sister, had worked hard renovating the Driftwood Inn, which has been in the family for years.

I had read the first two books so I was prepared when this book started with a focus on Celeste. It didn’t feel organic in flow from the ending of the previous book. I was anticipating each novel to build off the other which they did but also provide insight into next book.

Of course, it is difficult for me to provide a review of this book as a stand alone since I’ve read the other books. The storyline is clever and the romantic subplots humorous. I felt it lacked a strong framework moving forward to support the additions to the series.

Are you looking for a fantastic romance novel to take to the beach this Summer? Well, look no further because this is it! What a lovely and exciting book this was and a perfect and refreshing change from my usual, favourite genre.

“The Summer Retreat” is the third book in the ‘Moonlight Harbor’ series by best-seller author Sheila Roberts, the first book being ‘Welcome to Moonlight Harbor’, followed by ’Winter at the Beach’.

Although I’ve seen many of the author’s books around in my local library, the supermarket, and in bookshops, this is the first one I’ve read (I think) and I was not disappointed.

Celeste Jones is a primary school teacher and as the summer term has just come to an end, so has her relationship with her cheating boyfriend, Emerson. To drown her sorrows and re-evaluate her life, Celeste decides to visit her sister, Jenna who lives in a quaint town on the Washington coast where she runs the ‘Driftwood Inn’.

This was a well paced and very touching romance that had me hooked, even before I had swiped my e-reader to take me to the second page.

Sheila Roberts has drawn a pleasant, easy-going and genial character in Celeste. However, at thirty-six and a half, she thinks it’s about time she finds herself a husband who will not cheat on her and she has plans to settle down, have a family and live happily ever after.

“The Summer Retreat” was such a delightful, though predictable, tale and once I had started reading, I found I was totally invested in the story. It held my interest right until the fulfilling conclusion.

I will be reading the first two books in the series and I eagerly wait to see what Sheila Roberts is going to be releasing next. This is a must-read for anyone who loves women’s fiction or romance novels, so you need to order your copy!

Thanks to NetGalley, Harlequin - MIRA and the author, Sheila Roberts for the free advanced copy. This is my honest and totally voluntary review.

I decided to put this one down. I just wasn't loving it. It was fine ... not a bad book in any way. I just wasn't enjoying the read even if it had so many of the things I love to see in a romance. I didn't connect with it and so I wasn't looking forward to reading it. It's likely to be the place I'm in right now ... my attention is divided and if something doesn't GRAB me immediately, I tend to just let it go. Maybe I'll revisit it in time. Based on reviews, some really seemed to enjoy it so definitely give it a shot if the premise speaks to you.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.

I've never read a Sheila Roberts book before, so I was curious to try this one out. It IS #3 in a series, but I never felt lost (although I did feel curious about some of the events mentioned, especially the Christmas disaster, so I'll probably read the earlier books to check it out).

This book focuses on Celeste, who was cheated on by her boyfriend, and comes to the beach to help her sister Jenna with the Driftwood Inn and to recover. Celeste still wants to find "the one" and so is attracted to a man who in every way seems safe, but she's also attracted to the unsafe stranger in room 12.

I typically HATE love triangles, but this one didn't bother me a ton for some reason, especially because the resolution was so nice.

Oh I should mention, about 1/3 of the story was from the sister Jenna's point of view. I am not sure how I feel about those parts - I suspect I would have liked them more if I'd read the previous books, but they did give the story more breadth. I also loved the grandmother who is a firecracker and still bakes cookies and other treats for everyone.

I'd like to thank the publisher and netgalley for letting me read this book.

After finding her boyfriend cheating on her Celeste decides she needs some time away, to reflect on her past decisions
What better place then the Driftwood Inn a place where life is simple and there is always a good time.
This is the third book in the series, but the first I read and I wasn’t lost at all.
Loved this town and the people and I look forward to revisiting time and time again.

When I received the widget for this title all I could think at first was romance -- that's not in my wheelhouse. But I have learned not to be dismissive. Over this last year and a half of reviewing ARCs I have found that some of the most soul stirring books were in genres that I would typically ignore. So with an open mind I cracked open my Kindle and journeyed with Sheila Roberts and Celeste Jones to her sister Jenna's summer retreat. Although it was a bit predictable, it was rather charming and sweet. A clean romance and perfect getaway for readers who gravitate towards lighter fare.

Special thanks to Justine Sha at Mira Books and NetGalley for access to this book.

This was a cute read in some parts, though it was the best buffer between my thrillers. Celeste was cheated on my her cop boyfriend, so she goes away for the summer to her sister's inn at the town on Moonlight Harbor, helping her out as a maid. There she meets 3 eligible men, and decides which one was more suitable and dates him.

My first read by Sheila Roberts, I liked the book in parts. There are many characters, each are charming. Small towns have their own busybodies and gossips. And it was quite a laugh to get to know them. This was was not just a romantic happily-ever-after kind of a book, but it was about relationships with sister, niece, aunt and her parrot, and a lost dog.

The book had many interesting scenes with Celeste, some like the lost bikini top made me laugh. I didn't even realize that it was part of a series as the book worked extremely well as  a standalone. The only niggle I felt that sometimes the writing felt a bit off, they didn't seem to work for the characters. The sister kept pushing Celeste toward one man deemed more suitable by her when she kept 2 men dangling. The emotions could have been well brought out. Celeste was a teacher, but some scenes made me feel she was too immature especially while supervising niece's driving.

Overall, I had fun reading it. It took me 2 hours of this afternoon to get cosy with tea and diet biscuits.

As a younger reader, I had a really hard time with women’s fiction. I felt too young to relate to any of the characters and like I could never fully understand or realize their struggles. But I also felt like I was too old for the YA genre—at least at that time.

Now that I am almost forty, I feel like I can finally appreciate women’s fiction in its entirety so lately I’ve been really open to this genre and enjoying it so much!

Sheila Roberts is a fairly well known author to me. I haven’t read any of her books, but I have seen them quite a bit in bookstores as well as grocery store end caps. Not to mention a few of her books have been turned into Hallmark Channel and Lifetime movies.

This is an author who clearly has a large fan base, so when this book came up for review, I was eager to see what all the fuss was about!

This book basically ended up being exactly what I was expecting it to be—-a quick, easy beach read with a HEA romance and I am 100% ok with that. I like to balance my reading so that I don’t get burned out on any one particular genre and this book was just what I needed to break up some of my heavier reading.

I can see why Roberts has such a large devotion of fans. She writes believable characters with realistic features, stories, and lives and the romances are believable with a little sizzle and sweetness resulting in a HEA. While this book isn’t going to change the world, it does offer a fabulous escape from reality and an enjoyable story.

While at times this book was really predicable, I didn’t mind all that much. I took my pleasure from reading about the lovely little Driftwood Inn at Moonlight Harbor, the fun characters and Celeste’s romance. While there were some obstacles between Celeste and her HEA, I thought it was appropriate and fitting for her character in the end.

This was a nice beach read—something you throw in your bag and read in one sitting while soaking up the sun—or maybe you read in one sitting while it’s raining outside while you dream of sunnier days (my situation). All in all, it was a lovely read and even though it wasn’t earth shattering in content, it was a nice escape and one that I read in only a couple of sittings as it read very quickly!

Songs for the soundtrack: "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" by Adele

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½

My thoughts: 📖 111 of 295 Ch. 9 - If she brings in one more eligible bachelor, I'm giving up this series. I'm not a fan of so many beaus you don't know who the LI (love interest) is. It just leads to disappointment when they don't pick the one you like best.
📖 161 Ch. 14 - I think I have the 2-4 beaus trope down, the biggest jerk gets the girl. I'm betting on it.

This was a hard decision as I enjoyed this book more than the last one but it was still just above average. I decided to settle on a Goodreads round-up of 4 with a 3½ rating. This story features not one, but two triangles, possibly 3 with 2 squares if you include the unrequited parties. It's just a lot of drama and mess. I refuse to think people in their late 30s and early 40s are this indecisive. The MC was cheated on but saw nothing wrong with committing to one guy while being inappropriate with the other, so hypocritical. The love wasn't instant but it was shallow. Like the previous book, there were too many characters to keep track of. There are character sketches but at the end of the story. I was right about my theory and now I think I know the guy for everyone I've met so far. So annoying.

Recommend to others?: Probably. It's getting warmer, but still not on the level of book 1.

If you're looking for a meaty novel with complex characters and deep emotion, this book may not be your cup of tea. If, on the other hand, you're in the mood for an easy, breezy summer story with a town full of quirky characters, some laughs, a sisterly dynamic, a cranky mystery writer, and an adorable rescue dog, The Summer Retreat should be a fun addition to your summer reading list.

DNF at 28%.

After her serious boyfriend dumps her for the woman he's been having an affair with for the last several months Celeste Jones decides to lick her wounds in Moonlight Harbor at her sister Jenna's B&B, the Driftwood Inn. As she earns her way as a maid Celeste is sucked into the small town activities like line dancing, parades and Sunday church. Her sister is determined to set her up with a nice guy, but Jenna has her own romantic entanglements.

I had three issues with this novel. First, it is all telling no showing. Second, this is the third book in a series and the author peppers the narrative with so many references to events in previous books that I feel the entire book is a recap on what happened before. Third, the characters are such caricatures that I struggled to find any glimmer of empathy for any of them.

I forced myself to read past the 25% mark to see whether the writing settled down or the plot started to unfold but at 28% I decided enough was enough. Definitely not for me.

In the third Moonlight Harbor series book...…...

After Celeste finds out that the man she had planned to marry has cheated on her, Celeste takes off for the summer to visit her sister, who had purchased an inn, and help her out while clearing her head.

Once she arrives in Moonlight Harbor she finds that there are eligible men and that a few of them are vying for her attention.

She meets Pastor Paul through her sister, who pushes Celeste towards a relationship with him.

A writer, Henry, is staying in Cabin 12 and at first glance Celeste thinks he is murderer, but as a friendship forms between him, Celeste realizes he is a writer and there are sparks between them. Celeste ignores her instincts and follows the path she feels is safe. Can she find happiness with safety or will she listen to her heart.

The Summer Retreat by Shelia Roberts is the 3rd book in the Moonlight Harbor series, and my first book by this author. Celeste Jones has her summer all planned out with her boyfriend, hoping to become his fiance, until she catches him with another women. So she is off to the beach for the summer, working for her sister at the Driftwood Inn. I really enjoyed this cute fun romance, especially as I watch it snow outside my window. I recommend this sweet romance, and am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

I loved loved this book. Back to Moonlight Harbor Sheila takes us. I was happy that we got to know more about Jenna's sister Celeste. I was routing for her to have a happy relationship after she dumped Emerson. In fact I kind of remember him from the last book a bit and he would not do things with her then. There was two guys interested in Celeste, Paul and Henry. I was routing for one more so than the other and in the end I got what I hoped for. I love Sheila's writing style as I always feel good reading her books and can't put them down. I am looking forward to the next one.

The Summer Retreat by Sheila Roberts, book three in A Moonlight Harbor series, is Celeste Jones’, story. Celeste’s summer plans were destroyed when she discovers her boyfriend cheating on her. Instead she heads to the Moonlight Harbor, and the beach, to help her sister, Jenna, with the Driftwood Inn. Almost from day one, Jenna is pushing Celeste to start dating again. First up is Pastor Paul who falls head over heels for Celeste. It’s possible that he is just too perfect. So what if there is no chemistry, he still checks all the boxes and loves her. Then there is the mystery guest in one of the cottages. Celeste stumbles upon him as she attempts to clean his room. Peeking at his laptop she finds he’s a serial killer!! Oh wait, that’s not right, he’s writing a book, killing off his ex-girlfriend who had no faith in him. As Celeste discovers, despite making herself a fool at the beach with Harry, they are attracted to each other. Plus there is definitely chemistry between them and he is definitely not Mr. Right. Or is he? Jenna has her own problems in sorting her own love life; loving two completely opposite men. If only both sisters would listen to their hearts, not logic, they just might discover that life, and true love, can be found at the beach.

Ms. Roberts wrote a wonderful, funny, and emotional story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with chemistry, amusing banter, and endearing characters giving Celeste a chance at finding true happiness and love and a future with the right one. I highly recommend The Summer Retreat to other readers.

There are lots of things to really love about this book. Let’s start with Celeste. Celeste is a great character, for both her strengths and her flaws. She’s so real and any woman can relate to her. Who hasn’t made mistakes picking their partner for life? Learning not to let those mistakes define you is a lesson we all must learn and is at the heart of this book, with a humorous canine friend thrown in.

Speaking of canine friends, it is no secret that I am a dog lover and a big fan of any book that features a furry sidekick. I fell in love with, Nemo, the mix breed pup who follows Celeste home. It’s an interesting bit of symbolism here. Nero, trusts his natural instincts about people and chooses Celeste, while Celeste has trouble trusting her instincts, hence the premise of this book. I have to admit a little bias, Nero is part golden retriever, and I am a happy golden mom.

I will say that though this book can be read as a stand alone novel, I felt at times like I was missing some depth to the story. I knew everything I needed to know, but at times I didn’t feel everything I think I was supposed to feel. For example, Celeste’s sister, Jenna, has two love interests. We learn their backstory, but I feel like I was missing the details that fill out their story. Now that is just a feeling, and is in no way definitive, but I noticed it enough that I thought it should be mentioned.

This is a very cute book with lots of humor and realism. It’s so hard finding your person, especially when you’ve been burned before. This is a great summer read while you’re sitting on your porch sipping a sweet tea.

Sheila Roberts has done it again!

This is a great book to take with you to the beach or to let you think you are there.

It's great to be back at the Driftwood Inn with Jenna, Sabrina and Aunt Edie. There are still all the wonderful people of the town. Some are helpful and some not so much. Jenna's sister Celeste has come to town to get over a cheating boyfriend and look for a new relationship she hopes. Her sister wants to help her find the man. Can they find the right man? Celeste finds many obstacles along the way. She thinks she has found Mr. Right until she met the man in room #12. She isn't sure she can be a Pastor's wife. Can she do it and forget about room #12? Celeste has to make a few more mistakes to get it right. After all don't we all!

Sit back and enjoy your time in Moonlight Harbor and all the other wonderful characters that reside there.

What a fun read full of emotion, humor and banter that I could not put down. Celeste has arrived for the summer in Moonlight Harbor to help her sister, Jenna out at the resort and mend a broken heart. Jenna wants her sister to start dating again right away. Pastor Paul is the most logical choice but he doesn't make Celeste's heart pitter patter. Then there is Henry, staying at the resort working on his first novel, but he is only there for short time and his life is kind of a mystery. So who will you be, Team Paul or Team Henry??

I loved these characters, very likable. They will have you laughing out loud and cheering them along. This is the perfect light beach read. This is the third book in the series but can be read as a stand alone.

I thought this book was fantastic! Celeste is a teacher who is just trying to live a happy life with the perfect man. Unfortunately right before summer, she walks in on her "perfect" boyfriend, Emerson, with another woman. She decides it's time to get away and make a change. She decides to spend her summer with her sister, Jenna, in Moonlight Harbor. She plans to stay away from men, but plans change.

Celeste is such a relatable character, and her sister is so much fun. This story was a fun and relaxing read. Perfect for a beach day! I got lost in the story, and I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend you grabbing a copy for yourself!
