KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.

Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. I wasn't sure what to expect starting this series, but I really enjoyed it!

The story line is great--well-paced with a clear intro for those who, like me, have never read a Captain Marvel comic before--and it's entertaining and fun. The characters are well-defined, and I love Carol's dialogue--she's sharp and witty and a great example of a strong woman who still has flaws and doesn't try to hide them.

I usually don't like female action figures and superheroes because their portrayal in movies and books frustrates me. They always try so hard. They have to prove themselves and compete with men, and they still have to be sexy. I love Scarlet Johansen's Black Widow because she's just a cool action character, and the sexiness is built into her persona, so it's a given. I love Carol because she's not trying to prove herself to the male characters. She knows who she is, the men know who she is, and they respect her, but most importantly for this female reader, Carol respects herself. And she's just a really cool superhero. Period. Like all the male superheroes are allowed to be.

I also love that this creative team is mostly women, which helps with the authenticity. I love Carol and Jessica's friendship, the appearances from other Avengers, especially Tony, who's always a favorite (I imagine he'd be easy but also fun to write), and I love the various conflicts that creep in, either blatantly (the Kraken...) or subtly (Hazmat).

I can't wait to read #2 and find out how this stage of Carol's story develops. I highly recommend this series so far! It's a great issue with a lot of content, and the artwork is fantastic. Very vivid and bright. The dialogue is my favorite aspect of the story so far, though. It's very natural and smart.

Tolle Fortsetzung der Mini=Serie The Life if Captain Marvel.

Aw come on!!!!!! I really came to this book with an open mind and I really as enjoying it. The beginning and middle phases were pretty good. Buuuuut then the other shoe drops... They just HAD to do the lecturing, they just had to have a white misogynistic villain, they just couldn’t help themselves.

And really...ANOTHER POST-APOCALYPTIC, STEAM-PUNK, GIRL-POWER storyline? The house of ideas is all out of ideas. Really a letdown.

This book has everything I wanted. Sincere, compelling dialogue. Fast action. A solid cliffhanger (even though I can definitely do without all the cliffhanging). I wish the Nuclear Man wasn’t quite so on the nose. But I can’t wait to see what happens in the next issue. Another great story to follow.

I am no man
Aight so Captain Marvel came out today and I saw it. I’ll give my movie grade down below. And too be honest the way I feel about the way the movie turned was quite similar to this first issue of the 2019 Captain Marvel Run. I didn’t love it by any means. A light entertaining first issue. You don’t need to know any previous context because the issue fills you in. The art is pretty great. Veeeerrrry colourful. And the penciling is fantastic. But I have 2 big problems with this issue. Every character in this book didn’t seem to take their circumstances seriously. Most of the dialogue was too sarcastic and overly witty. The repetition of this got in my face after a while because this is longer than a standard 25 page issue. Carol Danvers wasn’t as likeable as she could have been. The relationships set up between her and someone like Tony Stark were a little toxic. My other big problem with the issue is how out of ideas they seemed to be. I enjoyed the issue overall but when the book opens with a giant generic squid monster and ends with the most abrupt set up to a super villain I’ve seen in recent memory, well there’s not a lot that can forgive that. The very end of the issue actually sets up something with a bad ass concept. I don’t know if I would have picked up issue #2 at the time though.

The new Captain Marvel series is out! Yay! Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way…I’ll admit that I was sad to see the previous team for Captain Marvel leave, but so far I love what I’ve seen from the new creative team. They’re holding true to the character while also adding their own spin…I approve.
Honestly, looking back at this issue, I have trouble believing that it was just a single issue instead of three. SO much happened in this one issue, so it’s a lot to take in. But it did a great job jump-starting the series.
The first issue established where Carol stands, in pretty much every sense of the meaning. We kind of get a good idea of how much or little change we can expect to see from her and it set a baseline on her emotions, friendships, teams, etc etc.
And the cameos! A lot of characters that I’ve grown used to seeing in Captain Marvel made me so unbelievably happy. I really want to list out who showed up, but I feel like at least one of them you need to see the whole scene to get the full excitement of it all!
I loved a couple of the decisions in particular that were made in this issue. Again, I can’t really say what or why, but trust me, it’s good.
There was a lot of action as well as all the setup I already mentioned. At least two distinct fights, which is all sorts of amazing. So if you’ve been missing watching Carol kick butt, then this is totally the issue for you!

I liked this. The art's pretty, and the dialogue's enjoyable, though heavy. There's a lot of talking in this issue, though I didn't mind keeping up. Thompson's got a talent with expressing relationships, and this whole package had us exploring Carol's ties to a lot of characters.

A few times things did come across as cliche. Tony Stark is a big walking cliche. Nuclear Man, super cliche. And Thor running around with his "thee, thay, thines" seemed a bit much. Though through it all, I didn't once doubt that these heroes didn't respect Captain Marvel to take care of herself.

For a first issue, this did all it had to do. We got a great creative team. We got to feel out Carol's powers, her motivations, her friends. There's a neat balance of competence and vulnerability, as she navigates herself to a new place. And the cliffhanger is pretty swell, too. I want this to do well and right now, it's got the momentum to carry itself to success. I'm super glad I read this.

Kelly Thompson rules. I love her work on Kate Bishop. The writing in this comic is tight, filled with witty banter. Can't wait to see what happens next.

One issue in and already SO MUCH better than the 2017 Mighty Captain Marvel run.

Also, Jessica! And Tony and Rhodey. I love everything about this so far.

A really typical feeling marvel first issue with lots of somewhat superfluous feeling guest stars that goes out of it's way to put the main character on a pedestal. Art is generally solid and I like that we now have Hazmat as Carol's new side kick but other then that it didn't really do much. Don't think I'll keep up with it.

I’m not sure why but this first issue didn’t grip me as much as I’d wanted it to. It was all over the place. Starts off with a team up between Captain Marvel and Spider-Woman, then segues into Tony Stark sucks, before trying to make Carol into some kind of instructor for a new female hero. Just as I thought it had settled into a rhythm, in walks Rhodey and therefore his shared history with Carol become the central story, before there’s a full on third act battle. All of which leads to Carol ending up in a totally different dimension?

I think Kelly Thompson and team have written Carol as wonderfully human and it makes the character easy to love. But as a starting point for a new series for an iconic and veteran character I expected more focus.

The enthusiasm and passion for this hero is there, so here’s hoping it’s worth sticking by the series and seeing where it goes.

The comic, including the action with the kraken, was simply boring. However, boring would have gotten it 3 stars because I did enjoy the illustrations.
However, the dialogue between Captain Marvel and Nuclear Man really made me dislike this book. Nuclear Man is a “seven-foot misogynist” who attempts to underestimate Captain Marvel. Nuclear Man is the worse of stereotyping. I get it that the author wanted to show a bad man who is putting down a woman, but his dialogue could have been more realistic. I understand that they want to make Captain Marvel a feminist super hero. Personally, I’m not interested in that. However, if that is the intent, at least the writing could be better.

this 5 star rating goes to the fact i finally feel like i have carol back. she's quirky, and annoying, and pointedly NOT funny. every issue features one of her best female friends (who are so incredibly important to her - a fact which has been WAY too disregarded in the past decade), and rhodey is back! carol is just... carol. and i love it.

Fantastic first issue with amazing artwork. I love Carol, Jess, Rhodey and all the rest. Nuclear man is a weird villain. I loved Tony and Carol together.

Spoilers:
Ending, Carol goes through a portal to rescue Ripley, an interviewer, from Nuclear Man; the Avengers unable to go through.

Captain Marvel (2019-) #1

For a number one comic this is actually pretty decent. Captain Marvel is definitely an interesting character. She is probably worth following in the comics as she is in the movies.

Dear nuclear man. Taking on Carol is a bad idea. Run now while you can . It's not going to be pretty. More Carol and Rhodey

Such an awkward moment between Carol and Rhodey.
