Craig Lea Gordon fell in love with Science Fiction at a very early age. His earliest memory is of bawling his eyes out on a Saturday morning when a shabby looking robot called Metal Mickey appeared on TV. It wasn't anything to do with the low budget production values, but instead because it had displaced Battle of the Planets, his favourite sci-fi program.

Shortly after he insisted that his parents christen their Ferguson Videostar by recording Battlestar Galactica. From the age of six, a good Christmas was defined by whether or not Star Wars was on TV. At 12 he made his Mum rent him a copy of Robocop, and he has never been the same since. Some say he has a hidden prime directive to create stories of a possible future.

These short stories draws you in and doesn't let you go.
Lea Gordon always lets loose tons of questions with his short stories, nights without sleep, pondering and analyzing each aspect on what I’ve read.. yes, utterly thought provoking and immersive! Craig’s books always have and caused that effect on me! I’m totally snagged by this series!
The result is the best stories in this genre that I've yet come across! Congratulations Craig Lea Gordon, you have put me in a trance and hi-jacked my mind, will and emotions!

I read the stories included in this collection when released individually, so will collect my previous thoughts on them. Could’ve sworn I’d reviewed Theatre of Death but obviously that one slipped through my review list somehow. Anyway, it’s a corker.

Bad Hands

A dramatic and high octane short story. Resistance fighters attempt to take on a regime entrenched in technological dogma, where their efforts not only face initiating the breakdown of authority but also risk unravelling the framework of the fundamental mechanics of their existence.

A brief and punchy sci-fi short addressing themes of systemic control and the intermingling of the technological with the personal. Gordon creates an immersive world, succinctly described and vividly alive.

The Machine

An exciting and tension filled sci-fi short. The Machine delivers fast-paced technological horror mixed entertainingly with the disturbingly biological. From the start an atmosphere of suspense dominates as the story reveals a main character embroiled in a risky situation, possibly making dubious moral decisions, all assisted by The Machine.

A blend of the bodily with the mechanical, The Machine has some fun descriptions and pleasing plot turns. Those who like classic science fiction with a taste of the horrific will appreciate the creepiness and action, whilst those looking for bigger ideas will find the act of creation and the ethical considerations of the use of technology suggested at. An engrossing, well-paced sci-fi story.

Theatre of Death

My favourite from the collection. Beautifully described, grand and exploratory science fiction.

Transmit

A commander prepares for a mission. As a reader we are thrown into the story and from the get-go tasked with working out just what is happening. The commander has left her family on Earth to take part in a mission of extreme importance and Gordon does a great job of fleshing out his central character.

Traditional sci-fi themes are tackled with enthusiasm and there is a pleasing emotional tone to the execution. Transmit takes in the grand and intimate scalings of the pioneering aspects of human endeavour.

This is an enjoyable mainstream sci-fi story.

First let me say that I do not normally read science fiction. So please keep that in mind when reading this review. Thought I try something new. I did have some trouble with some acronyms.

This is a book that contains four short stories. The blurb does a great job of summarizing each story. They are definitely science fiction. Below is what I think they are.

Bad Hands is like pulling the wool over your eyes when I go it figured out.
The Machine is definitely a mad scientist story.
Theatre Of Death is life experience used to move on. I personally want to strangle the end. GRRR.
Transmit is survival after the end?

Nice thing is that the book can be read story by story or all in a few hours.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

These four short stories are all quite different from each other, but all leave you kind of sitting back thinking "wow, that was intense!" They all pick out a crucial moment in somebody's life (and/or death) and delve into it with a real ability to take you there, just for a little while. I don't normally like short stories much - I like something you can really sink your teeth into - but I really did enjoy these four stories. I especially enjoyed Bad Hands, and found myself wishing that the author would dedicate a novel to this story to truly do it justice. These stories definitely leave you thinking!

I don't think I'm one to read books like this to be honest. I'm just not into the pipe world thing sorry but I would still like to thank Booksprout for the free copy and I am volunteering leaving my review.

I must admit that I didn't expect quite such a gruesome selection of tales from Craig Lea-Gordon.
Although I have read and reviewed his short story Transmit before, it gave nothing of the flavour of
the other books in this anthology of his short stories.

Bad Hands
Weird and not too wonderful - this is a 'what if...? sci-fi story with a seam of horror running through it.

The Machine.
Particularly horrific to me, was this modern version of Frankenstein mixed up with Sweeney Todd, as the mad scientist seeks revenge on those who mocked his inventions.

Theatre of Death
This could be subtitled Out of the Frying Pan Into the Fire, as the man with the magic hands weaves his way out of one potentially deadly dilemma straight into another.

Transmit
Futuristic body transferral doesn't end quite as the MC anticipated - and there's no going back!

The disparity between subjects is not too great to merit exclusion from this brief but thrilling, (if you like sleeping with the lights on and blackout curtains at your windows) offering, but be warned - they're not for the faint-hearted, or those of a nervous disposition (or under 18s in my humble opinion).
Give the novelette a try if you dare and form your own opinion.

"Like a digital tsunami ..."
Four well crafted and often thought provoking short stories to stir the imagination:
Theatre of Death
After twenty years in the Academy, finally it is judgement day.
A short story packed with beauty, creating glorious pictures in the mind, but also carrying a sinister edge.
The Machine
A very short short story, quick and easy to read, and dripping with gore and sinister intent, The Machine is the ultimate mad scientist tale. It is descriptivly well written. Although an horror story, presumably, it was so over the top in it's belching and squeltching, it first made me smile then laugh out loud.
Ultimately predictable, it was still very enjoyable
Transmit
From the first sentence that Grace Jordan will die in just over seven hours to the dramatic conclusion, the reader is taken on a journey of hope, expectation and fears.
It left this reader forgetful that the story had been only a few pages in length, satisfied, yet still wanting more.
Good character building, visual impact and excellent S.F. Definitely recommended.
Bad Hands
A very short but tensely written snippet, both intriguing and emotionally packed. Two people, Cole and Sarah, are about to take the lead in the revolution to overthrow the Leader and bring insight to the peoples.
There is a sense of unreality about the piece, deliberately fostered, since the couple prepare to make history "and undo reality" but whether this is metaphorical or actual this reader was hard put to determine. The story has the feeling of being a part extracted from a greater whole. If this is so, then the novel could be something extraordinary.
Worth rereading as it is both beautifully worded and shortA

Short stories are notoriously difficult to get right: to provide enough body to keep the reader invested in the story yet still bring it to a fulfilling conclusion. And these short - very short - stories do all of that. Recomended.

This is a collection of short stories. Normally, I write about the book and then write a couple paragraphs about what I liked and didn't like about the book. I'll be doing this one differently. I'll be giving my opinions on each story. After I'm done with each story, I'll give my opinion of the book overall.

The first story was Bad Hands. I'm not really sure I can give a full opinion on this short story. It was a very interesting read and very detailed, but it was too short and lacking in context in some areas. I think quite a few things needed to be explained better in this story.

The second story was called The Machine. I don't know how I really feel about this one. It was a bit too sadistic for my taste. Not to mention it made too many jumps throughout the story. There are major holes in this story that need to be filled for the story to flow better.

The third story was called The Theatre Of Death. I was really feeling this story. It had a lot of potential and intrigue. But it wound up leaving me with more questions than anything. This felt more like a teaser of a novel than a short story.

The fourth story was called Transmit. This was the best of the four. I enjoyed it fully. But like the rest, it is lacking in detail and could have been drawn out a bit more. That was the biggest disappointment for me.

Overall, these were all great. I don't really see them as short stories though. I see them more as an idea piece for a novel or novella. They all need a lot more writing. They are all majorly lacking important parts to the story. And some are without an ending at all. I don't hate these stories. I just think they need a bit more work.

Received an ARC from Booksprout for review
Chose this under the wrong impression what this would be.
What it is is 4 very short stories, 8-10 pages each, giving less than 40 pages
to read.
World-Building was good in most, but while it is all SF, most are also
Horror, which I read in the past, but do not really need nowadays.
The titles:
- Bad Hands, was ok, Rebellion, would like something longer from that world. 3-3.5 stars for this alone.
- The Machine, pure Horror, and first of two twists I saw coming from a certain point in the story, another one (the last one) not, but that did not save. Also, due to content I only read this in FF, skipping passages. Bloody and boring. 1.5-2 star, with 2 only for the final twist.
- Theatre of Death, more Horror than SF, with a bit of fantasy thrown in, although I must admit, I did not understand all of the story, felt like it was cut from a bigger one, which was needed to understand it. 1 star. Nothing to write home about.
- Transmit this one is real SF, but again too short for me. 2.5-3 stars.
All together 2 stars. Will not bother with this author again and I think this should be added for free to a longer book rather than sold separately or put together with other short stories in a bigger collection.
Reading a lot of SF and the ongoing "The Expanse"-Series, there I enjoyed the short novellas and even paid for them (thinking too much, though), but that where all longer than this short number - ok, they where mostly novellas, not short stories, but still this felt like not enough meat for me.

As a scifi lover this is my jam.

This series of short stories will take you away from the mental shores you know, to places beyond space and time. To places where science is so much more advanced and there is far more cutting edge tech to go with it.

Each story presents the reader with a new landscape and new characters. I really enjoyed where some of these were, like the scenario for example, in Transmit, which was within our own solar system, was one not too far from our future as I see it.

Although I find short stories slightly sad in a way because once I get into a story I simply don't want it to end.

I loved the completely different ideas for each story, they were nothing like one another in plot or landscape or characters. In fact they couldn't have been more different. But that's what kept them exciting and thrilling. The anticipation at the beginning of each story was huge. I just had no idea where I would be going next. That's the thrill of short stories.

I found each story had its own specific rules too. Not every natural rule that we take for granted on Earth, is available in these strange environments. This helped me slip the chains of this reality and become immersed for a brief time in theirs. Marvelous. So very entertaining.

I love this author's broad scope in his writings, and I get the distinct impression that he has only just begun to scratch the surface of the world of scifi that is in his head. If this is a taste of the quality of things to come, then I for one feel that he is a man to watch.

Bad Hands about a citizen revolt against the establishment giving an unsettling view of what might happen if sentient robots planned a revolt.

The Machine offered a "mad scientist" who developed a machine to suck the essence from people.

Theatre of Death gives an on-stage performance that either ended in death or the gift of life to androids.

Transmit tells the story of a survivor who is beamed off earth just before a celestial object arrives.

The stories were quite brief and readable. The first three stories seemed to be a zombie apocalypse directed to millennials who expect augmented reality as life-avoiding entertainment.

Transmit is by far the best story because it portrays a person who tests out a first-ever transmission of her body to a distant planet in what seemed to have realistic elements.

Words that becomes great images in the hand of Craig Lea Gordon. That is especially true for the third story: Theatre of Death. There was only one passage where I had trouble picturing what was happening: during the fall of the last I did not understand what went “wrong” until the very end.
All the stories are dipping in science-fiction or dystopia gone messy when compared to our standards and morals. Full of human feelings and constructed back-story. It was a feast especially given their size.
Get ready to see a series of futuristic back-lash in pure imagination.

This is a collection of 4 science fiction/horror short stories. While the stories are indeed short being about 10 pages each, they have incredible world building, fleshed out characters and they all blew my mind. The author does an amazing job of creating a complete story in short order. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It blew my mind and if you like weird science with a touch of horror you will love this book.

This book of four short stories by Craig Lea Gordon was quite a smorgasbord of way-out there science fiction and horror readings. What they did all have in common, besides having some surprising endings, is that the descriptive tone and phrases were simply superb, with some I hadn't read before. Being as they were shorts, there really was no time for character development or vividly detailed description, but they were still fun to enjoy. This is a somewhat late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Booksprout.

I found the premise of the stories intriguing and the writing gripping. The author has the ability to create starting images in the mind of the reader. For me I was drawn into the narrative and longing for more. I hope at some point in the future we will see some of these ideas fleshed out into full novels! The first one in particular

of the 4 stories in this collection, there was only one that I didn't care for. That was more of a I style difference, that I didn't like the style Theatre of Death was written in. Bad Hands or Transmit were both excellent. The Machine was pretty good, although more gruesome than I typically like. All the stories flowed good, with occasional vivid descriptions.

These are four excellent short stories that bend your mind in a crazy way. In a good way as far as I'm concerned. I love short and weird stories and I really enjoyed these. Each story was a new blast of strangeness. Hope there are more out there by this author.

While these stories were interesting, they were not very satisfying to me. I like a story to have a specific explanation for the ending. The stories were mostly done with varying themes and good characters. Thanks for the experience.

A delicious cross between Poe and Lovecraft - short but not light.

The four short stories in this anthology are completely unrelated. In each Gordon provides a window into a different dystopian or madly twisted world. This is a great quick read. Perfect for an evening's reading.

This book is a great introduction to Craig Lea Gordon.
