With a big cast of weird and wild characters, it amazes me that the author can still introduce us to new characters more twisted and quirky than any before.
As good as always, even though I am not that interested in Hijikata plot line at the moment, the Wilk and Kiroranke and Sofia backstory was okay, it's not my favorite plot line either (favorites are Asirpa's and Sugimoto's groups). But the end of that flashback had me shook. Also I love the conversation about the Russian Empire, the revolutions of late 19th century, orthodox church's role in the upholding the monarchy, the struggle of native communities against the expansion of the empire.
I wasn’t super enthralled by the lack of Sugimoto / Asirpa in this volume, but the flashback in the second half of the volume was interesting enough to balance it out. I wasn’t crazy about the first half of the volume since not a whole lot happened in the mini-arc until the end, but it was still decently fun to read.
Aunque este manga no decae y es una pasada, tengo la sensación que están metiendo subtramas de relleno desde hace unos cuantos tomos... O eso o el final está cerca.
This for me was the weakest entry yet. There’s a big focus on newcomer Kodukura, a character I hadn’t seen since he was introduced a few volumes back and it took me a while to recognize him. I don’t really have any affinity with him yet so all the screen time he gets was a little.. off for me. This was heading for a 3/5 for the first time but Tsurumi’s heart wrenching and surprising origin story at the end brought it up half a point so 3.5/5
I feel like, in an effort to broaden the search and explore the cultural and geographical variety and history of the setting, we get away from the best parts of this series—Asirpa and Sugimoto! There is yet another prison break, and the humorous bits of past volumes are recycled in this one. There’s only so many ways a random naked man’s exploits can be funny. I don’t get the references in the chapter titles either, but that’s on me. Still, the art is always engaging, the informational asides always elucidating, and Sugimoto is always IMMORTAL! Now if we can just get back to that last bit...
All three groups are circling each other now, and theres still several tattoed prisoners out there, but will Asirpa and Sugimoto even need them if she gets her memory back? This is becoming a very involved story, with Russians posing as Japanese living as Ainu. This is also very well researched and the art continues to be great.
WHOA, seeing the way some layers blend and mix together in these characters’ backgrounds is ridiculous. My mind is blown, because it all makes perfect sense and yet I never once realized it was a possibility.
The detour with Hijikata felt a little drawn out, though I did enjoy the discussions of poisons and antidotes! Subtle world building continues to be fun for me.
This series keeps me guessing at every turn. Just when I think I know where things are headed, another twist comes along, adding even more depth to the characters and their motivations. I enjoyed the backstory with Asirpa’s father, Kiroranke, and Sofia—it sheds light on why things have turned out the way they have. Meanwhile, the side events with Hijikata and Sugimoto were unhinged and chaotic.
An incredible reveal this chapter, plus another good "the gang deals with a serial killer" storyline which Noda can whip off with his eyes closed at this point. What more can even be said, read Golden Kamuy.
