This book is about Elizabeth I, who was probably the best queen of all of the English queens. She made a big effort to do good things for the country and at the same time to try and make life better for her subjects. Elizabeth introduced many new types of produce and commodities whilst ensuring England was safe and secure from the various countries that wanted to invade her. She was one of the few royals who were not in it just for the money.
This book expands upon the section about her in the earlier book – The Tudors. The most interesting part of this book surrounds her early years both before and after the death of Henry VIII. She truly had a life of ups and downs.
When she said that she had the heart of a King she wasn’t joking. Perhaps she should have added as well that she meant a fair and just King - there weren’t many of them around at the time.
I love that this not only gets you into the history but provides for a readable experience. I love reading the story of Elizabeth and how much she had to conquer to truly become a huge piece of history.
There was not much I did not already know, though some aspects of her life were more in-depth and I now have a better understanding of certain events or time periods.
Well laid out and informative. It has certainly added to my general knowledge of the era. I read this book immediately after reading a similar book on Mary Tudor her half sister and predecessor but 1 (if you factor in the ill fated Lady Jane Grey who was queen for only 9 days before having her chopped off by Elizabeth 1.
