It'd been a long time; a lot of things had changed. Since sailing away from Cane Garden Bay, Jesse McDermitt had changed. Waking one morning, the smell of rum still on his breath, Jesse realizes he doesn't much like the change anymore. The mask which he'd freely put on didn't fit right. It was the mask of a drifting, womanizing, boat bum, and it concealed his inner turmoil. Peeling off the mask, he soon realizes what a mess he's in.
Weeks of rigorous, open-ocean swims and increasingly deeper free dives, help put the strength back in his body. But physical strength wasn't what was lacking. It wasn't what had finally pulled him into a lifestyle that wasn't his. He'd lost focus on the important things in life, the need to be part of something better.
In a secluded anchorage, far from civilization, Jesse powers up his satellite phone for the first time in weeks. There is a message from Charity Styles, asking him for a meeting. She has a line on something they both need, something to focus on. A mission.
From award-winning story-teller Wayne Stinnett, comes this 14th novel in his exciting Caribbean Adventure Series. Taking the reader from the deep-water canyons of Exuma Sound to the sport-fishing Mecca that is Bimini, Stinnett spins a fascinating tale of redemption and vengeance.
I'm a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and now, a full time novelist. Between those careers, I've also worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, divemaster, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver. I live in the Sea Islands, near Beaufort, SC, with my wife and youngest daughter. We also have three grown children, five grand children, three dogs and a whole flock of parakeets. I grew up in Melbourne, FL and have also lived in the Florida Keys and Cozumel, MX.
Jesse's been bumming around for awhile, and finally gets tired of it, so he retreats from civilization and gets back into shape. Finally, he powers up his satellite phone. There's a message from Charity. Together, they each find a new mission in life.
If you were ever worried that Wayne Stinnett might run out of plot ideas and that Jessie might finally end up as a stiff and all too predictable a character, Rising Charity erases those concerns. After a year of wandering and trying to find himself, he found out that it only helped him discover who he's not. He's finally ready for a new direction, and maybe this is exactly what has been missing from his life. Jessie, that is. Stinnett has known where he was headed all along!
I had left these books alone for a while as I was getting bored with Jessie, however after a gap of over a year I tried the previous book Rising Force and thought it was OK. Staring this book it seemed the series was picking up again and I really enjoyed the first half of the book. Unfortunately it just went away from me towards the end and I didn’t get where the story was going, also there is yet another women. It seems every new book the author has to find a different woman for Jessie.
At one point I could have quite happily given four stars, but I didn’t really like the ending, hence just three.
Wayne Stinnett is paving the way for a bunch of new books with Jesse's crew. They've all decided to go to work for an environmentalist who, with his vast resources, will take on the wrong doers of the world that the government can't touch because of politics. Mr. Armstrong has a fleet of swift boats and the crews of those boats are much like Jesse and his crew; they're all former Special Ops people. This book lays the groundwork for establishing Jesse as one of Mr. Armstrong's resources. Jesse adds another boat to his fleet as well as a submersible that will go to depths Jesse has never been. To start the adventure Jesse helps disable a Russian freighter which is being used to train dolphins to be suicide bombers. He then helps Armstrong by exposing a company which is doing illegal dumping of toxic waste. Is there a new love in Jesse's life? Just who is Sarah?
Jesse has spent the last 12 months bumming around, the 1st 10 months getting drunk and chasing young women. Mid-life crisis over, he gets himself back in shape. Just in time too, because Charity shows up with an invitation to speak to a prospective employer about a job offer. This includes Deuce and we are left to wonder the who, what, when, where and why of it for most of the book. Doesn't stop them from finding action in the meantime, though. Some will say that this is just an environmentalist book. It possibly is, but there are bad guys there that need to be dealt with too, like Russians training kamikaze dolphins to brush up against ships with a bomb strapped to it and highly toxic waste being dumped in the ocean. It is disappointing that the top rung bad guys are not dealt with in this book, apparently being left for the next one.
So Glad we didn't have to suffer the massive bender, it was beneath Jess. It was discussed in a very interesting method as and when. I enjoyed the integration of the group, and the mission. Very much a book 1 to a new series as the players come together for the journey ahead. I would like to praise the Author here, as he has achieved something that Authors with years of experience have failed at numerous times. He has re invented this group almost 3 times. By setting up a slack mission statement and a l will help anyone attitude, this rolling into different adventures isn't jarring or unreasonable. So reminds me of the Clive Cussler books The Oregon Files... But this is on a massive scale. Looks like the next 5 book's could be fun.
The plots have been a bit thinner lately, but this book was an absolute waste of my reading time. It was a lot about nothing. I skimmed the last half of the book. I still like the locale and the characters, but Rising Charity was a huge disappointment. I hope Wayne gets back on track with Rising Water. I was really hoping that I would not have to search for another author and book series for at least the next month. I am cautiously optimistic, but I should really say I am wishingly hopeful, but not very confident. This book was a real "stinker". I gave it a two star rating based on having read the prvious 13 books in the series. If this had been my first Stinnet novel, I would have evaluated the book as zero stars, as in not your worth your time.
I’ve read every book in this serious and and each one about Jesse. With each of those books I was pleased and at times excited about what I had read. However, I am thoroughly disappointed with this one. The opening scene was right on course and then it abruptly changed directions. I honestly could not determine who the main character was supposed to be, extremely frustrated about this Poppy character...what a headache and I struggled to finish this one. I understand a transition in the mission has been made but I’m not of fan of what I just read.
Last night I finally completed Wayne's Caribbean Adventure Series with Rising Charity, #14. I am now current with this series and the Charity Series and am anxiously awaiting his next 2 books in the next couple of weeks.
This one was full of life changing events, plenty of action, new characters and excitement that we have come to crave. My husband is behind me and racing to catch up. He was away for 3 weeks and read the first 7 during that time. He keeps thanking me for getting him to read these 2 series.
I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. The new company seems like it promises many new innovations and adventures. I like all the books and recommend all of them. They are interesting and really draw you in. This book is a bit different, but I think it is an excellent way to give the characters new energy and new purpose. I think this book will be more interesting to you if you have read the previous books. The mysterious technology of the new association reminds me of Clive Cussler's Oregon Files series. If this is the first Wayne Stinnett book you're considering, I highly recommend you start with the beginning of the series and read all of them.
I enjoyed this book. I have read all of the Jesse books and the Charity books. this one was mostly Jesse so wondered why it was called Charity. Jesse has come around to being a good guy wanting to help the world.
The parts with the lady called Poppy really did not fit into the book. Yes the gang helped her but it did not need to be in the book.
the writing as always was very good and plan to read the next one Thanks Mr. Stinnett!
Mystery, drama, love of mankind, good and evil all covered
5***** is my easiest way to begin this review. Story combining characters from 2 of my now favorite authors. Poppy Mcvie , the loved and protector of all animals on land and now at sea and Jesse McDermott and all his friends and cohorts ,. They take care of transporting all to where ever evil lurks to right the wrong and avenge the best of humanity. Easy read but very difficult to put down so enjoy as I did.
I enjoyed every page of this adveture. I particularly enjoyed that the author did great full-ins of the Poppy McVie book Operation Dolphin Spirit. For me he greatly enhanced the characters of both books. It was fun the way they worked together. I feel I know them better now. I must admit that Charity is keeping me guessing...is she jealous of Jesse and his attention to other ladies? I like their current way of being with each other.
I’ve enjoyed this series immensely and find the new storyline to be riveting. Stinnett weaves a great tale going from a maverick freelancer on fast ‘fishing’ boats to laconic sailboats. He captures the best and worst of the protagonist and each story leaves one yearning to find out more. I’ve read several series of books and usually tire from the lack of expansion of the characters, not a problem with Jessie McDermitt.
Another excellent novel from Wayne Stinnett. As usual, it was a page Turner that brought Cheryl and Jesse back to the world and lifestyle that they were most comfortable in. And, the plot thickens with the introduction of Armstrong, Sara and the "research" group that Armstrong heads up. Waiting for the next book in the series!
Looking forward to the next book. I thoroughly enjoy the story and the action that you write into every book. Especially the breadcrumbs you leave for the reader. I am interested in how Jesse deals with his newly discovered daughter and now his relationship. Always keeping the reader on their toes. I will mostly read again just to see if I missed any clues.
I love these books. Great kickass characters and stories. Now they are going in a new direction. I was really worried about Jesse at the end of the last book. Thank you Wayne for bringing him back to what he knows and to all the people he loves. I can't wait for the next books.
New characters of Sara & her father & Armstrong & associates get together w/ Jesse & the old gang including Duece, Charity, Chyrl, Tony & Andrew. Whole different adventure for the gang to take on to make the environment a better place to live.
Beginning of a new series for McDermitt and friends. This particular story spends a lot of time setting up what is to come in the future books. It also assumes that the reader has read the other stories in the McDermitt and Charity Styles series. If not, the reader is completely lost as to the relationships amongst all of the players.
I'm always waiting for another Jesse McDermitt or Charity Styles novel to read, and, this did not disappoint. I've read every book in both series and, can tell how Wayne has evolved as a writer as well as the characters, who are, ever evolving. Can't wait for the next!!
I didn't realize until the Epilogue that Mr. Stinnett had actually called this a prequel, hence I kind of changed the direction of this review. It's funny I was going to call it a book length prologue! But I enjoyed it immensely for what it is and makes me look very much forward to the continuing series! Thank you and keep up the great writing!
Reading this story was almost like slipping into your favorite pair of jeans. Immediately comfortable. It’s a pity that we had to wait so long for it to be published, but it was well worth the wait. I cannot wait to see what the next chapter of Jesse’s life will bring.
Great story. Main characters are now like old friend.
So far, there has never been a bad Jesse McDermitt story! When he gets together with his buddies, the action begins and your life is on hold until you finish the book! Then, you are frantically hunting for the next book in line!
I am an avid Jesse and Charity fan and have thoroughly enjoyed each book with exception of this latest Charity adventure. Way too much feminine side and not enough warrior. It read more like a romance novel. I felt strongly enough about this to submit my first ever review.
Interesting well written book by Mr Stinnett. I have enjoyed all the books in this series and looking forward to more from this author. Note to Mr Stinnett it would be interesting for Jessie to discovers a son he didn't know about that is a Navy Seal to continue the adventures. Just a thought!
I loved this book primarily for the easy, seamless, character growth; besides being believable Stinnet was able to make readers actually care about these characters. Their evolution seemed natural and commendable. I really enjoyed all of the Jesse McDermitt series and Charity is a fantastic new character. I hope he rights many more with her in them.
This was a very good diversion from the other books in the series. Dealing with demons of the past and how they overcame them, gave Jesse and Charity a new persona. Showing that they needed to have a purpose in their lives and the ability to do some good in the process. Looking forward to the next book.
KU borrow. Not sure how I feel about parts of this one. I wasn't expecting the depravity. Guess it's not any worse than some of the "eliminations" that Jesse, et all, have participated in. Charity rocks, though! She shows a softer side. You'll be reminded of a couple of Jesse's previous adventures.
