I’ve always loved dogs, which puts me in a unique category along with what, maybe two or three billion people?

What’s not to love about an animal who will sit in your living room all day long, waiting for you to get home, and even if you need to work late and then stop for a stress-relieving beverage on your way home, when you unlock that front door, is absolutely overjoyed to see you? How could you not adore an animal who senses when your day is not going well and tries to cheer you up by dumping a sodden tennis ball in your lap?

I was probably 8 years old, playing in the back yard of our house in Prairie Village, KS, when my dad opened the gate and in rushed a 9-week-old Labrador puppy. I fell to my knees and spread my arms and that dog leaped into them as if we had loved each other our whole lives. It’s a scene that shows up in A Dog’s Purpose—a puppy and a boy meeting each other the very first time, both of them full of unrestrained joy.

We named the dog Cammie. She arrived in my life when I was just beginning to connect some of the dots in my memory to make a picture of who I was, forming my identity as a child. I remember every skinned knee and bicycle ride in the context of Cammie, who was always there for me. And I lost her just as I was starting to leave childhood behind, passing on after I’d spent a year in college. That’s Cammie, the dog of my childhood.

Years later I was riding my bicycle in the mountains outside of Pine, CO. A chance decision to bounce down a dirt road led me past a few scattered ranches and one small house near a creek, set back from the road at least 50 yards. A single “woof” from a dog caught my attention, and I braked and stood in the dry, clear air, regarding the dog who had called out to me.

She was on a chain by the house, and a fence stood between us, so I remained on the road even though I could see that the dog, a black lab mix with a crazily active tail, was clearly friendly. I gazed at her and the dog sat, attentive, staring into my eyes exactly the way my first dog, Cammie, used to look at me, really seeing into me.

And that’s when the thought hit me. What if this wonderful dog was Cammie? What if dogs live over and over again, and always remember us?

I dismissed the thought, waved at the dog, and rode away, but days later the idea came back to me. What if?

I’ve been a writer my whole life, but never have I ever written anything as important as A Dog’s Purpose.

I can’t promise you that A Dog’s Purpose will make you love your dog more—how could it do that? But I’ll tell you what a lot of people have told me: after reading A Dog’s Purpose, you’ll never look at your dog the same way again.

”I had a mother and no sisters and too many brothers.”

The only girl in the litter, Lily is also the smallest and the weakest, and her brothers play much rougher than she does, frequently knocking her down in their play. They live in a space with one chain link wall, while the other walls are windowless, but they can hear the noise of other animals outside of their space. Some they recognize are dogs by the barking, some are cats, and a few others there are wildlife rescues being held following medical care. When they first arrived here in this kennel, Lily and her brothers only food source was their mother, but once they were brought to live here, they were given different food. The food came in through the one wall with the chain link gate, carried in by a woman who had earned her mother’s trust, and so Lily trusted the woman, too, but held back from showing her any affection, sure that she would be trampled by her brothers.

The woman is in charge of the kennel and wants the best for all of these animals, as well as for her three children, and her husband. They have a girl, Maggie Rose, the youngest, smallest, and only girl, and two boys, Craig and Bryan, who frequently roughhouse, tease and refer to Maggie Rose as “runt.”

A bond develops between Maggie Rose and the puppy that she comes to name “Lily,” for her favourite flower. The more time she spends with her, cuddling with her, training her, the more she wants this one for her own. But – it’s against the rules.

Lily isn’t just any dog, she’s learning so much, and it isn’t long before Maggie Rose starts to believe just how special a dog she is. If only she can find a way to keep Lily with her, and save two hearts from breaking.

This is W. Bruce Cameron’s newest story in his A Dog’s Purpose Puppy Tales series for middle grade readers. Halle and Story insisted that I give this one four paw stars.

Lily is a rescue dog that a girl wants to adopt but can’t. This book is not funny like Bailey’s story. It has more drama and is predictable in parts but the puppy point of view is fun. Each puppy has a distinct personality.

Another heart warming story! This is a real tear jerker and I am in love with Lily. I don't know what it is about Bruce Cameron but he can create the most amazing animal heroes!

Adorable, quick read. This one made me cry, just like all of the books by this author. This book tells the tale of Lily, a puppy at a rescue, and "her girl" Maggie Rose, who is the daughter of the head of the rescue. Lily helps other animals at the rescue, while warming the hearts of those who come into contact with her.

I loved this little story. For a children’s novel, there’s a lot going on in this book. It’s a sweet story about a rescue dog finding her home. Even an adult can enjoy this book.

Lily, the runt of the litter, is in a shelter with her mother dog and brothers waiting to be adopted to their forever home. Maggie Rose, the daughter of the woman who runs the shelter, loves to go there to help and enjoy all the animals. When she meets Lily, the story begins and what a story it is. Interesting and enjoyable.

This one has good suspense & much emotion. This reader (Ann Marie Lee) emotes well & varies her voices well (including having kids sound like kids); I only wish her dynamics (her range of volume) was a little less, because listening in the car I had to keep turning the volume up & down. (Some dynamics is good; too much is not—when you’re driving.) Having listened to several of these Puppy Tales now, I have to say that the kids’ mistakes can be frustrating but are understandable; but the ADULTS’ mistakes are really annoying. And I wish the author made it clearer how old the kids in the stories are. Also the reader pronounces ketamine weirdly. Still—enjoyed it; good thing about kids’ books is happy endings, nothing horrific.

Lily was at a shelter. I think the shelter director’s rule about no volunteer or employee being allowed to adopt was stupid. That happens with every rescue! And just because they adopt an animal does NOT mean they will stop fostering. In fact, it makes them an even more valuable foster home! If a foster goes into a home with other animals, then you learn (carefully & safely, of course) if they get along with those animals; other calm resident dogs can teach a new, nervous foster dog that people are ok, & help house-train them, & teach them how to use a dog door; if the fosters are young, then they can learn to be ok with other species. It’s always easier to get an animal adopted if you can say “gets along with dogs, cats & kids”. The only thing you lose in letting fosters adopt is 1) their ability to foster an animal that is known to need to be the only pet in the home, or 2) if they adopt too MANY, they’ll reach a “no more” point.

I am very disappointed to find that her offshoot series, “Lily to the Rescue” is apparently not available on any form of audiobook!

My niece is a huge fan of these books which she gets at Scholastic Book Fairs, so I bought this for her birthday.

But then I started reading it myself, and I got hooked! Full disclosure, I own a rescued pit bull, so I was super psyched to see this little pit bull on the cover, because even though they are the most popular breed in America, they are very misunderstood.

Pit bulls are very smart, and only mean if trained to be so. They work as service animals and police dogs and all kinds of things, so I love the fact that in this book, Sweet Lily is a dog who helps other animals in a rescue feel more relaxed and at home.

Many rescues have animals that they specifically bring to the facility to help new arrivals deal with what must be a confusing place.

I don't know if my niece loves the book, but I'd place a bet she will because she's loved every other book in this series.

But I will say, it was TOTALLY entertaining for an adult. Go, Lily go!

Note: I accessed a digital review copy of this book through Edelweiss.

I am not a dog person but I wanted to read one of Cameron's dog books because my students are so into them and this one came up on Edelweiss so I decided to give it a try. It was alright. I can see why students enjoy them. Some things bothered me a little bit though. Like how the dog didn't know words for certain things but then seemed to understand other things that a dog wouldn't necessarily understand (I can't think of a good example but I just remember feeling discontented several times when reading the book). The plot was somewhat predictable and I didn't really feel an urgency to continue to read the book.

I just read this out loud with my 11 year old daughter. It was cute, but not as good as some of the other A Dog's Purpose books that we've read. The story got repetitive with Lily talking about how she was Maggie Rose's dog and how all she wanted to do was make her happy. And Lily's 'voice' wasn't quite as charming and funny as some of the other dogs in the other books. But my daughter loved it, and that's all that really matters.

I read this book one year ago. I kind of enjoyed it. This book has evolved into its own sequel series called “Lily to the Rescue.” Maggie Rose really wanted to keep Lily permanently, but on old man eventually buys her instead. He ended up giving Lily back to Maggie after she tried to find her way back home. Such an amazing story full of love and adventure.

Title: Lily's Story A Puppy Tale
Pages: 208
Author: W. Bruce Cameron
Publisher: Scholastic
Genre: Fantasy
ISBN: 978-1-338-66447-8
Price: $7.99

The Book starts off as Lily living in a kennel with her mom, and her brothers, at the animal shelter (Lily is the puppy). Maggie Rose, the owner’s daughter, comes to the animal shelter to play with the pets. Maggie Rose ends up falling in love with Lily and wants to keep her. Even though Maggie Rose knows that keeping a dog from the shelter is against the rules, since her mom works there, she avoids that rule and still begs her mom to let her keep Lily. The workers can't keep an animal from the shelter because when the puppies are little, they are fun to play with. Maggie Rose's mom says that if they kept Lily she would just be neglected when she gets older because she won't be as fun, since she isn't a puppy anymore. Maggie Rose comes up with all of these remedies to keep Lily, such as Lily rescuing other animals. There was no way Maggie Rose was going to let another family take her dog, Lily. She did not want to give her up. Maggie Rose went to the shelter every single day just to play with Lily. Not only was Maggie Rose getting super attached to Lily, Lily was getting super attached to Maggie Rose as well. They did not want to leave each other’s side. Everything was fine until, one day, Maggie Rose heard Lily might be getting adopted by another family. Maggie Rose was very sad, so she had to think of a way for her mom to tell her she can keep Lily. Maggie Rose decided she was going to sneak Lily with her when she went to help her dad with the deer that was hurt. It turned out, it was a good thing Maggie Rose brought Lily because she was the distraction. Will Maggie Rose’s mom let her keep Lily?

I said I enjoyed this book because it was not my personal favorite. It was a good book to read for a fantasy. I just didn’t find much of it very interesting because it wasn’t realistic. I still liked it though, I am just not sure if I would read it again.

I rated it 4 stars because I would say it is a very interesting book for anyone that likes fantasies, there is a lot of suspense as well. I really liked how they waited until the end to find out what happens to the dog.

I would recommend that Addison Cornwall reads this book. She has read books like this before, and said she really liked them. She also has a loving passion for dogs. Addy has three dogs of her own and says they keep her on her feet and very entertained. I think she would like to read this book.

If you liked A Dog's Way Home, A Dog's Journey, and A Dog's Purpose, then you might like this book too!

First sentence: I had a mother and no sisters and too many brothers.

Premise/plot: Lily, our heroine, is the runt of her litter, and also the only girl. She (along with her mother and brothers) have been rescued and are now leaving at an animal rescue where they are awaiting new forever homes. Maggie Rose, our human heroine, is the runt of her family, and also the only girl (she has two brothers). Her father is a game warden (I believe) and her mother works at the animal rescue. They don't think Lily should be their forever-and-ever-and-ever dog. After all, they can't bring home every animal they fall in love with. But Maggie knows that Lily is one of a kind. Maggie and Lily belong together. Lily has a special way with other animals--even cats. Will these two be able to stay together?

My thoughts: I loved Lily to the Rescue. This book came first. This is her 'puppy tale.' This is the story of how Lily came to live with her forever family and to work at the animal rescue. I love that it is all from Lily's perspective. I loved seeing the world through a dog's eyes. I loved reading about all the times Lily proved herself "a good dog" by helping out with other animals. This was such a sweet book. Definitely recommended.

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway!

I'm a very visual reader .... and while it is noted that this book is a "Middle-Grade Fiction" .... as an adult I totally enjoyed it too and could see the moving picture play out throughout the entire story . It is written using, the precious puppy, Lily's voice. It was enjoyable to "hear" her learning process, experiences and view of the world.

While I could tell you exactly what this book is about ... the author did it best in the printed review on this page saying ..... " Lily is the smallest puppy in her litter and the only girl. Her brothers are bigger and stronger and like to push her around. When Lily meets a girl named Maggie Rose at the animal shelter, Lily discovers things are not so bad. Lily's size means that she can help other animals who are in trouble. It's Lily to the rescue!"

This book will be going out in our Little Free Library for the community to enjoy:-) I know others will enjoy it as much as I have :-) It's sure to fly off the shelf!

The story of Lily was great with the perfect voice for the female runt of the litter. The audio book did not have the discussion questions mentioned by the reviewers who had the book. It was easy to picture the little girl and Lily.

The only thing that I did not like was the unexpected ending. I played the last segment twice. I wonder if there was more the story. Now I would really love to see the book., Maybe the MP 3 -CD skipped the ending. I am not sure. I thought this would a good story for young children to listen to.

I received a finished MP3CD of this book as a win from LibraryThing from the publishers in exchange
shers for a fair review. My thoughts and feelings in this review are totally my own.

This was a very sweet story about a little rescue dog who has a special way of comforting other animals who were afraid or lost. She is brought to a shelter at a very young age and instantly bonds with the shelter directors daughter, Maggie Rose. Lily calls herself Maggie Rose's dog and Maggie Rose is her girl. It is told from the perspective of the dog Lily. But it is discouraged for shelter workers to adopt rescue dogs as they tend to stop fostering other animals and fostering is desperately needed. It's sweet story and I feel it would be a great story for children to listen to in a classroom setting. It's educational and compassionate. Recommended.

Pit bull mix Lily is the runt of the litter like the rescue shelter manager’s daughter Maggie Rose. They form an instant and inseperable bond despite her mom’s insistance as a foster family they cannot adopt her. To convince her parents of how special Lily is, Maggie starts tracking all the animals she’s saved. Adorable story of a rescue puppy who loves his person and would do anything to be with her. Similar to other W. Bruce Cameron puppy tales in this series, it is written from the puppy’s point of view which adds even more cuteness.

Read this before I handed it over to my step daughter and husband to read as their nightly bedtime store. We recently had to let our Lilly pass over the rainbow bridge and I thought this would be a good book for them. I was right. It is a very cute little read, tugs at the emotional heart strings. I’ve never read any of W. Bruce Cameron’s other works but enjoyed this and cannot wait to continue the Lily story.

Thanks to Libro.fm for the ALC free audiobook. The audiobook is very sweetly read. The strong bond between Lily and her girl Maggie Rose shines through. Lily is a shelter puppy who has a special gift for rescuing other animals. The audiobook is perfect for children and adults who love dogs. And for my students who won’t want to read a book where an animal dies, this book is just right for you!

I think this was a really lovely book. I really think this because it showed me what a person and a dog can have in common. I would recommend this book to 9-11 year olds. I would do that because this really showed a lot between people and dogs and how dogs are there to help too.

Wasn’t a huge fan but I didn’t want to give it low stars because I know I just wasn’t a fan because this isn’t really the kind of books I read. I just work in the kids department a lot and want to be able to give recommendations. Really cute story though.
