Entre 1870 y 1930 se establecieron las principales escuelas de la psicología moderna, y una de las figuras fundamentales fue sin duda Carl Gustav Jung.

Pero ¿quién es Jung y cómo hay que enfocar su psicología? Desde hace décadas el número de opiniones e interpretaciones sobre él se han multiplicado de manera asombrosa. Su figura produce mitos, leyendas y ficciones, y su obra ha calado tan hondo en diferentes estratos culturales que su nombre es uno de los primeros que acuden a la mente al mencionar la palabra "psicología".

Este volumen es un libro sobre Jung y sobre el surgimiento y desarrollo de la psicología y las terapias modernas. No concluye nada, pues la psique es inabarcable, pero suscita nuevas preguntas. Basado en fuentes reales y cotejadas, trata las principales cuestiones de la obra de Jung, reconstruye el contexto en el que el autor la elaboró y sitúa su gestación y evolución de forma paralela al desenvolvimiento de las ciencias humanas y naturales.

La psicología está hoy firmemente asentada y se ha convertido en un fenómeno de la vida contemporánea que requiere una explicación urgente. De ahí que reconstruirla mediante un relato histórico resulte esencial para comprender no sólo el desarrollo de las sociedades occidentales modernas, sino también el sustrato en el que descansa nuestro presente.


Sonu Shamdasani (Londres, 1962) es, además de editor, autor y profesor de la University College de Londres, director del Centro de Estudios Psicológicos en esa misma universidad. De sus investigaciones, centradas en la historia de la psicología y en la figura de Jung, cabe destacar la edición facsímil en 2009 del «Libro Rojo», así como los ensayos «Cult Fictions: C. G. Jung and the Founding of Analytical Psychology» (1998), «Jung Stripped Bare by His Biographers, Even» (2004) y «C. G. Jung: A Biography in Books» (2012).

What can I say...Shamdasani is THE Jung scholar! Even thought he does not mention Richard Noll directly in this book, it certainly can be viewed as an indirect refutation to critics of Jung in genreal. Shamdasani illustrates an exhaustive history and evolution of psychological theory and thought. Jung is placed not only in his educational background, but we get a glimpse at many of the biologists, physicists, anthropologists, and sociologists who backed up Jung and his theories of archetypes, psychological types and the collective unconscious. Shamdasani hopes that Jungian psychology can once again lead the way to synthesize all sciences so we can better understand the human psyche and our place in the cosmos. An excellent read!

While this book definitely deserves its five star rating, I’m not recommending that it be read. It is about the historical antecedents to Jung’s theories and it positions him within the context of his time. Written by the pre-eminent Jungian scholar, Sonu Shamdasani, this book is a towering achievement, cogently written and containing no fewer than 24 pages of references. Read it if you’re working on your Ph.D in the history of psychological thought. For me, there were many points of interest and equally as many sections that were way over my head.
