No one grounds a barbarian warrior.

Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, lost everyone he loved in the brutal Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing that brings him joy. Serving as his team’s pilot is the sole duty he has left. Then a horrific crash leaves him injured and unable to fly.

The one being who can help him is also his gerel, the female destined to be his. She insists she doesn’t feel their connection. Qulpa is certain his beautiful mate is lying and nothing will stop him from finding out why.

Nayan knows the injured barbarian is her warrior, her one chance at a forever bond. His dominance makes her feel safe. His gentle touch inflames her passion. His kisses scorch her very soul. The tall muscular male tempts her as no one else has.

But she has a deadly secret. If it’s exposed, her injured male will lose more than his ability to fly. Both of them will die. She can’t take that risk, not for him, not for them, not for a lifespan filled with love.

Qulpa and the other members of Second's crew, are returning to their home world when they are attacked. Attacked by a vessel with markings identifying them from their own military. As pilot, it's Qulpa's responsibility to get them out of gunfire range with some extreme evasive maneuvering as their ship has existing damage hindering their ability to do anything but run.

An already damaged ship, Qulpa is unable to pull off a miracle and their ship crashes but all on board survive. Injuries sustained though may affect the future as Chameles are historically intolerant of physical deformities or handicaps. Battle scars and wounds are accepted as long as it doesn't interfere their ability to perform.

Nayan, Head of Ship & Weapons Designs, takes a hands on approach in analyzing problems with any of her designs. Her pride and work ethic won't allow her to accept defeat without knowing why one of her premier designs presents with a flaw.

Qualpa knows a warrior can meet his gerel anywhere and at any time. Meeting his at the place where he's suffered a potential career ending defeat might be fate's way of buffering the blow of stepping down as #1 pilot for the top crew of Kahn's military.

This is a spin off series from the "my link text" series which I'm on the fence feeling could be read as a stand alone. There is a back story that I feel is pertinent in Dark Cure that a reader will miss out on and hinder their understanding of certain key character points.

Zondoo. What a read. I am a big fan of this author's SciFi stories. She hits the right combination of story content and character development in her world building for me. This one is no different. Love the romance elements and adore Nayan and her family. Hitch is her knight in shining armor while Tubby...... ah Tubby. 💋

The cast of secondary characters helps to support the central characters and it's great for me to reconnect with characters from previous stories (hence why I'm on the fence if this can be read as a stand alone). The evil/bad guy element is too obvious not to realize but will remain unnamed by me as those are things a reader should discover on their own.

I do appreciate how the author inserts social morality issues into her stories. Bullying and abuse might be a bit uncomfortable to read in certain scenes especially as it includes rejection and abandonment issues that carry over to adult life. I'm a sucker for abused characters who finds that special someone to move forward into a lifetime of joy and happiness.

This story ends with a heart warming Epilogue that left me smiling. The epilogue also served as a teaser for the next installment which is going to feature the big guy himself, Kahn.

Another great read for me that I encourage fans of futuristic SciFi erotic romance to check out.

I liked it...but

I am wondering if this is a spin off series? It doesn't indicate it anywhere in the marketing and it's like it drops the reader into the middle of an established world, where you should already know the rules. It makes it hard to follow and connect with the main characters, especially the male lead. If not, this first book in the series needs a lot more world building and character development. By the very end, I was invested and liked both characters very much. But if you are not a patient reader, I could imagine why it would get more than its fair share of DNFs. I am a patient reader though and will read book 2 to see if the world development improves. Recommended for patient readers who enjoy broken lead characters who find love, redemption, acceptance and healing through each other. Level of steam high, level of angst low.

WARLORD SKY is book one in Cynthia Sax’s Chamele Barbarian Warlord series, a spin-off of The Refuge series. I was eagerly awaiting this story, it exceeded all my expectations. WARLORD SKY takes place on Chamele 2, and Qulpa, a Chamele warrior, is flying home. It should have been an eventless flight, but their ship was unexpectedly attacked, and crashed on the home planet. Qulpa’s family and close friends all died in the Succession Wars, he has one thing left: being a pilot. But he is injured in the attack, and might not be able to fly ever again. There is but a shadow of hope when Nayan – the revered Head of Ship and Weapons Design – who has been summoned to investigate the crash – suggests that she might be able to help him. It is sheer torture for Qulpa to be near Nayan, because she is his gerel – his one and only genetically compatible life mate – and she refuses to admit it.

Oh my goodness, this is such an exciting new world! While reading, I almost felt like jumping up and down, because it’s just that exhilarating and clever, and so much fun! Nayan’s fabulous “team” of bots and drones is genius! Nayan lives in her laboratory because she has a secret; she keeps away from other beings. But Qulpa is utterly smitten, and he is a wonderful hero; I just loved him to bits! He’s a big, tough guy, but so caring and gentle; he made my heart melt. And Nayan is not a helpless little female; she is the best at what she does, and respected; she is a heroine I can relate to. The chemistry between Nayan and Qulpa is electric, explosive, and yet there is so much tenderness – and scorching moments! Cynthia Sax knows how to write a real alpha male; her heroes are never selfish jerks, and Qulpa might be my favourite ever. WARLORD SKY is a terrific story, sad and joyful, very romantic, and one particular moment had me laughing out loud. And who was that mysterious man ... What a fabulous series this is going to be!

2.5 stars.

He would continue to battle her doubts and her past, understanding why she resisted taking that final step in their relationship. She had been betrayed by the beings who should have stood by her side, safeguarded her. It would take time and persistence to overcome that.

The book is written in short, concise sentences. The writing lacks finesse. The plot is OK. The characters are OK. The language used to describe the sexual encounters is somewhat cringe-worthy and uninspired. That’s about it.

Low death toll, high action/emotions

I LOVED this story! It highlighted how someone can be different and looked down upon, but be hiding an intelligent and creative mind that could truly rule the world. Both characters had difficulties to overcome, hurdles to jump, and rules to rewrite, and did so in a way that captured 100% of my attention. Though the death count was a bit low for a Sax story, it was still fantastic. 😀

Series: Chamele Barbarian Warlords #1
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

TW: child abuse, reference to forced sterilization

Qulpa lost everything in the Succession Wars. Flying is the only thing left that brings him joy but after being injured in a horrible crash he doesn’t know if he will ever fly again. Meeting his mate, Nayan, is the last thing he expects.

This was a very good start for a new series. Qulpa is an older male who has given up on ever finding a mate. Right when he thinks he is losing everything he loves, he finds Nayan the Head of Ship and Weapons Design. Nayan is extremely smart and is great with machines. She spends her time in the lab building new weapons and ships with only her robots as friends. She is hiding a secret that keeps her on the outskirts of Chamele society. I loved Nayan, and her machines, from the very beginning. She was a genius with machines and surprisingly dangerous when she needs to be.

“You’re my home, the sanctuary I would die to protect, the ground I touch down on after every flight, the source of my happiness, my strength, my present and my future. There’s no one in the universe like you, and I’m awestruck I’m the fortunate warrior to hold you every rest cycle.”

Qulpa and Nayan’s relationship, while a fated mate one, isn’t instantaneous. Nayan’s past has made her leery of trusting anyone and that makes her push him away in the beginning. I liked that Qulpa had to woo her and win her trust. I made their relationship stronger because they knew they could count on each other.

Overall, this was a great couple and a great start to this new series. I am very interested in learning more about the Chamele worlds and culture. Hopefully we will see more of Nayan and her little bots in future books.

Great characters who deserve a great story

Qulpa and Nayan are an odd couple, but they are perfect for each other. I really enjoyed this story with the genius girl who hides in plain sight and a guy who'd given up on ever finding his "one". The plot moves forward at a nice clip with action, fighting and relationship both, and great characters that continue to grow on you as you move through it with them!

We first met Qulpa on “Dark Cure” with his Commander Oghul. We pick up where we left off at, which is great. I love that we read what Qulpa felt and saw when he was on the ship prior to his injury. When he finally finds his gerel, she keeps denying they have any connection. Nayan knows they are mates but is keeping a secret that she believes will change Qulpa’s mind about her. I wasn’t sure at first what the issue was with her. But as I read on, I understood. I was upset to read that her own family treated her so badly. You have a smart woman that can create bots like no other and they are her only friends.

This book was excellent. You really feel for Nayan and the isolation. Qulpa, too felt alone. These two were definitely soul mates. I don’t know what is up with Tolui and who he really is. There has to be a reason for the abductions. And then we have Rin. He, too is a rarity among the Chamele as Nayan. He is young and needs guidance. I’m so glad he will get help and love from two very special people. I am really looking forward to Khan’s story. THIS should be interesting.

A splendid new story with the Chamele warriors!
What can I say? The emotions elicited by Ms. Sax’s characters are deep. I feel the anguish of a young child being bullied and battered, the pull of a warrior to his gerel, the relief of a woman who can trust her innermost secrets with her mate, the satisfaction of acceptance from others...
I love Nayan’s hard-won strength and the way she puts her own needs into creating designs that benefit not only her, but her Warlord and his people. Qulpa is wonderful! He’s suffered great losses and now counts his team members as his family (there’s room for more). Qulpa is romantic: “He had touched her systems, revved her engines, found joy in handling her vessel...” He never wavers in his pursuit of his gerel, placing her needs before all else. Although there aren’t many things being blown up, the explosive anger of a warrior seeking retribution for harm to his gerel is a sight to behold!
Awesome writing, highly recommended!

Spoilers
Qulpa is an older Chamele pilot who's given up on finding his gerel (perfect mate) until he crashes his ship. Feeling useless and defective because he loses his fingers which is a big stigma on his world he thinks his life is over...

Then Nayan walks into his life....sigh. I loved her and Qulpa together him determined to love her and she trying to keep him safe. They were both strong characters. That's hard to find in a female lead these days. Read three books back to back with doormat Heroines and hated them all...which is why I didn't review them hahhahaha

This book is great. The two main characters discover they are much stronger than they thought and they end up making each other stronger because of those discoveries...Loved this book!!

So for me this book was an SEPE or 5-star read which got me interested in her other series which is turning out to be just as good LOL stay tuned will be reviewing one of her cyborg series next LOL

Perfect freaks

I haven't yet read a story in Cynthia Sax's cyborg universe that I haven't loved. This one doesn't break that record. It's a fantastic story and a great adventure.

I loved reading Nayan's journey toward acceptance and how Qualpa supports and encourages her. It's just beautiful.

A very interesting story about how a person deals with being different in a society that strength and aggression is praise upon.
Love h ingenuity and how much she gave the warriors just by understanding what it is needed.
Very much in the sense of what do I have with what I do not have

I took a chance on this book cos it was only $0.99, and I'm glad I did. I loved both Nayan and Qulpa. She's a perfect example of a person who's been wounded but has survived and become stronger because of it. Her wounds are very real, and they're the reason why she pushes Qulpa away at first. Qulpa, however, is the quintessential protective man who is determined to win her trust somehow. He knows there must be a reason why Nayan is denying the mate bond. When he does find out, his reaction is all I could wish for.

When they are both attacked by a jealous male who wants Qulpa's position, I love their Warlord's response. I absolutely love that Nayan is so very skilled and intelligent, and that Qulpa not only respects that but it's one of the things that makes him fall in love with her. He loves flying, and is intimately familiar with the ships that she had designed; now that he knows her, he sees her in every line of those ships.

I didn't know it at the time, but I adored you long before we first spoke. I fell in love with your designs, with your mind, the little details you add to your creations, your way of thinking, your personality. It's in everything you do.

LOVED IT! But wish there was more backstory.

Although this is Book 1, there's definitely a connection to a previous book series which I'm still researching. Things sound very familiar. The Second and his human mate? Maybe the Cyborg series? I read so many books I lose track of storylines. Anyway, Qulpa and Nayan are just made for each other. He's a strong but caring warrior first, pilot second, (no matter what he claims) but finds out what it feels like to not be a whole Chemele. And she's so strong and has fought tremendous odds to end up where she is. I wish for so much more background on these characters, like how did she achieve her position after being hidden away for so long? How did Khan know about her and not say anything but didn't act like he was protecting her either? And what about an epilogue of the three of them, Qulpa, Nayan, and the boy, growing into a family and what the boy had gone through? So many questions! I need answers.

I think I've read this before...

Warlord Sky is actually a pretty good book on its own. So why only three stars? I have to say that I'm a devoted fan of Cynthia Sax's wildly rough and sexy Cyborg Sizzle series, with its uniquely bio-mechanical POV, pan-galactic species-inclusive vocabulary, and well-built universe-at-war setting. Chamele warlords are not cyborgs, but darned if they don't act, think, and sound just like the Cyborg characters. Identically styled and underpinned by identical themes of diversity, prejudice, and social change based on a minority-lead shift in core values, the book marches to the same drumbeat as the earlier series. Fine, they're great and noble themes and all, but a writer as capable of originality as Ms. Sax can surely do better, yeah? I am so disappointed.

“Warlord Sky” by Cynthia Sax

I don't think this book was for me. It's described as a science fiction/fantasy romance, but I only found an inkling of what could qualify as science fiction, fantasy, or romance. If you consider robots (like Roombas and drones) whirring about while two humanoid aliens have sex, then yes I supposed it fits the bill.

There isn't much plotting either other than the main female protagonist having a "big secret" that she will have to divulge to the main male protagonist and hope he will keep it a secret as well. In the end, the storyline only bobbed along a few inches- a lot of teasing of the "will he or won't he, will he accept my secret or not" took place. Perhaps if the book wasn't short, there could have been progress, but I don't think I could have read anymore "alien sex will he or won't he".

Qulpa lost hope of finding his gerel, his one mate, until he meets Nayan. He never thought he would find her and now she is the same person who can help him fly again with mechanical fingers. Nayan however is not like other Chemeles and she is worried that once her secret is out she will lose her position and Qulpa won't want her anyway.

Nayan was the worst!! She was all no Qulpa I hate you and you need to leave! And as soon as he leaves she's like " I can't believe he left!" I fought through as long as I could but she just got more annoying. I thought Qulpa was a good character and I hope things worked out ok for him.

Great read

This was well written. The story captured my imagination and I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end. The characters were well developed and relatable. The love story was strong and passionate. I was rooting for Qulpa to convince Nayan that she was worthy and deserved happiness. I was rooting for Nayan to overcome her fear and take what she wanted. The humanity of Nayan's bots was wonderful and charming. The ending where they find the boy and take him as their own completed the circle. I can't wait to read the next story.

Even though the Chamele warrior pilot, Qulpa, saved the lives of his passengers when he was forced to crash land their space craft, he and many of his passengers were seriously injured. Qulpa's injuries would introduce him to his one true match. The one and only he had been waiting his very long life to find. This story was an amazing adventure filled with unusual characters, personal struggles, jealousy, romance, and many unique bots, drone, and miraculous mechanical creations. I was drawn into the story immediately and held spellbound until the very end. I Loved It!!!!! Great Job!!!!!!

Male And Female Warriors
If you love strong men and women getting their HEA, you’ll love the books in this series!
Chamele men are big, strong, possessive and protective warriors hoping to one day find their genetically unique mate, their gerel or light in their darkness. And their gerel, mostly human women, are strong, stubborn, sassy warriors in their own way. The stories are full of funny dialogues, steamy scenes, fighting and loving. Wonderful entertainment, I loved them all.
Reminder: there are some free extra novellas to be obtained at C.S.’s website 😊

This was a short read. It was very good. Chamele Barbarian warrior Qulpa had lost everyone he loved in a brutal war and only finds joy in being the best pilot for his teams ship. Due to a crash, he loses the ability to fly. He goes to the one person who could fix his hand so he could fly again. She is his mate and she really is a loner. Wants nothing to do with being a mate, etc. Good story line and had kept my attention. Recommend.

I could've done without the replacement of words like: life for lifespan, and saying ass covering instead of pants or trousers, it was a minor annoyance but it did take me out of the book and make me lower my rating. Otherwise, I liked the the overall plot, enjoyed the main characters.
Thought the romance could've been dragged out of a bit and the conflict was resolved without much of any huzzah.
