Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
Dayum who the hell knew Shinra's brother was on some "Super Speed I'll Fuck Your Shit Up" power? Not me.
So Shinra does come face to face with his brother and it's not pretty. After a brutal beat down the crew has to recover. Everyone goes through a training arc because, well, you kind of need it. But what was nice is even though they gained a new member they for sure lost the last battle which made the training feel more than typical shonen training. The next arc begins here as they go into a super spooky place and the fights begin right away. Everyone this arc I have a feeling gets to shine as the fight fight was awesome.
SO yeah still digging Fire Force. It's light hearted, fun, action packed, and some really great moments between the characters. Is it my favorite manga or anime of all time? No. But for pure entertainment I'm having a blast. Hell, I like it more than Soul Eater. A 4 out of 5.
You have to actually get to the starting line or you won't even notice the real problem you need to solve. The reason difficult problems are so difficult is that you don't know anything until you try.
In the last volume, it ended with Shinra seeing Sho for the first time since they were kids but this volume started with Company 8 grabbing Shinra and bringing him to safety before we even really got to explore that situation. Sho vows that he is going to kill Company 8 and bring Shinra over to the side of the Evangelist, all while Licht works with the joker to spy on Shinra, and Shinra and Arthur head back to Company 7 to train under Benimaru to enhance their fighting skills. We then see Licht work out that the Evangelists and his white clads are using "The Nether" which is basically an old subway system that has laid in abandon since the beginning of the great Sol Empire. Comapny 8 head here to get to the bottom of the mystery.
This book wasn't necessarily bad. It was okay, it had some cool character moments and interactions but compared to other volumes, not a lot actually happens. I found myself zoning in and out while reading this and I had to keep setting it down, which never happens with Fire Force. Ultimately, it was fine. I hope volume 9 is faster paced though.
Shō and Shinra meet at last! And the happy reunion doesn’t last long. But we do learn that there are three sides to this fight: the Fire Force, the Evangelists, and whatever team Joker is playing for. The plot speeds up as we cruise through combat training, powerups, and planning an assault on the Evangelists. Exciting stuff.
The only issue I have with this series, is that ridiculously stupid ‘lucky lecher lure’. I HATE IT!!!
Brigade 8th now has their own engineer, got some training and upgrades and now are ready to face White Clad. The fight will not be easy, but hoping for the best for 8th brigade. So excited!
The battle at Vulcan’s workshop continues, and Shinra finds himself face-to-face with his long-lost brother, Shō. Shinra is determined to keep the promise he made to his mother and protect his little brother. Sho orders his knights to destroy Company 8 and take Shinra back to the Evangelist.
Shinra and Arthur train with Beni (Company 7). Shinra develops a special fighting style and gains better control of his flames. Arthur just becomes stronger.
Company 8 enters The Nether (old underground train tunnels) to attack the base of the White Clad.
The anime follows the manga very closely, so if you have watched the currently available episodes there won't be any surprises.
I'm still amazed by the artwork and enjoying the story.
Sho and Shinra finally meet but it is not what we expected at all. Also, Sho has perhaps the coolest power in the whole series. With Vulcan recruited, the new arc (Netherworld) starts and there are some cool fights in this volume, especially Maki's fight. The 8th Company's search for answers continues and even though it is linear I like how it is done. Thus, just because something is done many times before does not mean that it is automatically bad. I think the whole Generation and fire-based abilities are cool and the world itself is interesting. Slowly but surely it becomes better. I liked this book in general.
Fire has always been a thing of nightmares for many. In this world, people are at risk of spontaneously combusting and turning into Infernals. An Infernal wants only one thing - to destroy. They are no longer considered human. That is where the Fire Force comes into play. It's their duty to protect the people.
After Vulcan's workshop was attacked, Shinra and his allies had no choice but to defend themselves. Unfortunately, there's one more surprise on the horizon, as Shina's brother is directly behind the attack.
Review:
It's the twist we all knew was coming! But seriously, the building tension about Shinra's brother has been perfectly crafted. It made me excited to read Fire Force Vol. 8, to say the least.
Nothing about this volume went the way I expected, and I love it. This series has so many twists and turns, and it's far from over. Once again, we're getting to see more of the world and the characters within. It does make me wonder – will we see Company 8 either work with or fight all of the other Companies? I actually kind of hope so.
Fire Force Vol. 8 ends on a cliffhanger and is in mid-battle. So, if you're binging the series like I am, may I suggest you get your hands on volume 9 at the same time?
Highlights: Manga – Shonen Connected to Soul Eater Lots of Action
The family reunion at the start of this volume starts out pretty funny with Shinra enjoying his time seeing his long-lost brother, but it goes downhill pretty fast with Sho being totally repulsed by him. While it was predictable and not that original, it was still fun and interesting to see it play out here. It additionally leaves me dying to see what will happen next between them and how their relationship will evolve. For most of us, it is just good to see the two brothers back together.
In terms of the lore of the world, journeying into the nether and getting a few more pieces of the world history was compelling, though it still leaves many questions. How did they build above all of the old country and how will it last when the rest of the world is perhaps burning/drying away?
For character growth, seeing Shinra and Arthur finally get some practical training with our favorite captain, Shinmon Benimaru was fun. I loved his detailing of how those that can use their fire powers can minutely control their output precisely enough to do powerful outbursts.
Overall this was a great volume to move not only Shinra and Arthur forward but one of our favorite lead female characters, Maki forward too. For Viktor and Joker, getting such blatant detailing of their role and perhaps hints towards this third shadow actor that may be a player too was really great.

There is a fight at Vulcan’s workshop, and we finally meet Sho, Shinra’s little brother. Vulcan makes a decision about where he will work, and our heroes track down the White Robes to their base and fight off against them.
Stuff I liked: cool fights, especially Maki’s. Some decent character moments. Great art.
Stuff I disliked: Some of the character moments fell flat for me. Shinra immediately recognizes his brother? Really? Some odious fan service. Some training stuff felt cliched and underdone.
There is a lot packed into this volume. There is the end of the fight at Vulcan's forge, the betrayal. Sho appears and he is not a nice person. Then there is a massive info dump and some training. By the time Station 8 moves against the forces loyal to the Evangelist in the neithers it all starts to feel like a filler issue (despite all that happens). The action is interesting but this is just a warm up for volume 9.
What a neat volume. We got to see some characters upgrade and get better, we get to see new members of Team 8 take action, and we are finally introduced to Shinra’s crazy little brother. I anxious to read the next volume I love how the story is playing out.
This volume was really good. Maki is such a cool character, I loved seeing her in action. It's so much fun seeing the characters step into their own and each of them brings something different to the story. This was good.
Wow, Sho has some serious power!! Shinra gets a new move but he is so uncreative on the name 🤦♀️ Everyone is split up and Maki is a badass! What does the joker want?....
