3.50 Stars. This review is a little different because I didn’t read the book or listen to the audiobook. What I did was watch a live reading/acting version of the book. BookOffice and Claire Highton-Stevenson put on a live version of this book over six days. They used a bunch of British actors, some I recognized like Jessica Clarke (since I loved True Blood) and others that were new to me. The lovely Kate Magowan was the narrator who has a great voice. If I was her, I would get into working in audiobooks immediately. And I also have to mention Kenny Fullwood who was such a creepy serial killer, and I mean creepy in the best way possible.

This was a fun way to experience the book. The first day everyone was a little stiff, but as the days went on and the actors got into it more and more, it soon became more like watching a movie than just a live reading. It was funny though, I don’t know what it was but I kept blushing during the sex scenes:)

When it came to the actual story itself, I liked it. I think the book worked well for audio so I think people will enjoy the actual audiobook too. There were a few “he said, she said” type things that you need in a book but would be better not on audio, but overall the book transferred well.

I did feel parts of the storyline were a little predictable and easy to guess, but the storyline was still plenty entertaining. This book does deal with some tough subjects, it is a darker book, so just be prepared. I was not crazy with how Stevenson choose to do the ending, but it is what it is. I did enjoy this enough to read book 2 for sure.

If you are interested in reading the book, it is free for Kindle Unlimited users. If you would like to watch the reading/acting, the episodes are still on Vimeo. I’ll put the links up here but I don’t know how long they will be available for.

A few months ago I watched a movie about a psycho killer who kidnaps teen girls and leave a doll's head with gauged eyes in a gift box for the family and later he leaves the dead body exactly like the doll. I loved that movie
So when I saw the book cover and name I wanted to read it instantly. It didn't disappoint me. I LOVED IT.

Sophie Whitton is a detective working on the case of The doll maker. The investigation is pretty good and the way she and her team working on the case is enjoyable.

The romance was..hmmm..okay.. Sophie is in a unhappy relationship and she meets Rachel, a nurse. There were some hot scenes but the love wasn't there until the end. And I definitely don't like cheating no matter what the situation is. I was bothered by how the MCs got together at first. Except for that matter, the book is amazing and I very much enjoyed it. I hope there is a sequel.

Detective Inspector Sophie Whitton is after a serial killer dubbed ‘The doll maker’ who is terrorising people with his gruesome murders. As she gets obsessively focused on the investigation, she risks losing her longtime partner and her own sanity.

This is a very good lesbian police procedural audiobook that focuses on the investigation of a dangerous serial killer who doesn’t seem to have a fixed pattern when choosing his victims. As DI Sophie Whitton and her team work restlessly to catch him before he gets to torture and kill again, Sophie will discover some truths about herself. I liked that the author found the perfect balance between crime-solving and romance to make it interesting for fans of both genres. Both aspects of the plot are intertwined nicely in the whole story.

I found this book’s style similar to that of another British author, Cari Hunter, so if you like Hunter’s ‘Dark Peak’ series, you’ll probably like this book too. Even though this is a very compelling and entertaining read, there are a few triggers warnings such as extreme violence, explicit mention of sexual abuse and infidelity. These types of books aren’t normally my cup of tea but I can appreciate a well-written novel and put up with a few gruesome scenes in the process.

I’ve listened to the audiobook version narrated by Fiona Thraille. This is the first time I’ve listened to this narrator and it was an overall enjoyable experience. I found that she’s got the creepy tone perfectly, however, maybe not as good for the romantic scenes. All her voices were distinctive, though I preferred the male ones, and her accents were spot-on. This novel describes a full range of human emotions and Ms. Thraille’s performance was convincing for them all. If you like police procedurals with a side of romance, don’t skip this one.

Overall, a very good lesbian police procedural audiobook, 5 stars for both the story and the narration,

Most of DI Sophie Whitton’s life is about her job. She’s working hard to stop a serial killer who leaves dolls close to the bodies they mutilate, which has earned them the nickname of Doll Maker. When she manages to go home, Sophie doesn’t want to share all the awful things she sees during the day with her partner Yvonne. Yvonne wants more from her lover and doesn’t understand her need to withdraw into herself. Their relationship is failing but neither wants to be the one to call it. So when Sophie meets Rachel, a nurse at the local hospital, she tries to ignore the attraction.

I think I’ve said it before, I’m bored with thrillers and mysteries giving too much space to what serial killers and psychopaths think. I do not want to be in their mind. I also often find it a lazy way for authors to set the story, as it’s been done so often for decades now. The other thing I’ve had enough of is inflicting pain and torture on women.

That said, Claire Highton-Stevenson managed to make it feel mostly new and while she had to describe some of what the victims had to go through, she gave just enough details but not so many that I had to stop listening. And the narration was really good, with a languid pace that worked very well with the atmosphere. Also, while some of the twists were a little predictable, most were not, and I thought the author did an excellent job at weaving the story.

As for the romance, as much as I don’t like the idea of characters cheating on their partners, it worked. The chemistry between Sophie and Rachel is great, and everything that happens is understandable at that point in Sophie’s life. Sophie is a very complex and layered character, and Rachel is the right person at the right time. I liked the secondary cast too, especially Sophie’s partner and his wife.

UPDATED: So, I will admit that while this is a good book it was not one of my favorites, reading or audio. However, since BooksOffice did a live reading of this book with an amazing cast, it has definitely become one of my favorites to listen to. If you get the chance, go and watch the live reading from BooksOffice. They have all the recordings on Vimeo that can be watched. I highly recommend it.

Normally I like to read books before I listen to them but lately life has been getting in the way and listening is so much easier when to do. So, when given the opportunity to listen to this one I reluctantly did so. Not because I don't like the author, or the narrator, or anything along those lines but mainly because murder/mysteries have never been my favorite genre. I like romances, formulaic very few twists happily ever after romances. For those of you who have read some of CHS's books, this one for me was a bit darker and discussed (not in grand detail) some pretty not so great things.
Despite all that, I really did enjoy this listen. The narrator was good. At first I felt her speech was a bit too slow almost lazy like but it grew on me. And she did a good job changing the voices which is always, always a plus for narrations. The story was good too. I did feel the epilogue came in rather abruptly and that transition could have been better but it was still good nonetheless. Definitely worth a listen :)

I think this is Ms.Stevenson's first thriller book? Please correct me if I'm wrong and for her first, she's off to a good start.

Besides the genre, what seconds the decision to read the book is DI Sophie Whitton is already in a relationship, a first for me. However, Ms.Stevenson refuses to let me have my cake and eat it too, there are some twist and turn in DI Whitton's romance life that cause an angel and a devil to appear on each shoulder to question my morals/to cheer me on. The intimate scenes are pretty steamy, I've no idea what chemicals are used for the hs' bond but they are flammable.

The main plot - We have a serial killer that pays a lot of attention to his/her victims when they're alive and opposite. I'm a queer, I want them to be bloodier/disturbing. The motif for the killings is understandable but the victims' selection is quiet confusing. The investigators stumble into dead ends several times and always a step behind until some breakthroughs, then they kick it up a notch and I'm a happy camper.

Recommended? Yes, proceed with caution though as there's a big No - No element to some.

DNF. I generally love Claire Highton-Stevensons work and she's a great lady, plus this has so many great reviews - but for some reason I just couldn't gel with it.

I just found the Main Character of Detective Inspector Sophie Whitton nasty and irredeemable. She describes a witness as tarty and judges her solely on looks.
She is completely closed off to her live in girlfriend (Yvonne) of 4 years, and doesn't have the guts to end it. Then she cheats with an overly flirtatious nurse, Rachel, who aggressively goes after her even when she knows she has a girlfriend. Just no. I can't root for a couple that starts like that. I'm all for flawed characters but you have to redeem them, or at least make that connection something special.
I couldn't care less for either of them if I tried. The connection they do have, doesn't seem anything special. It's all very shallow, lusty and convenient, and it's clear the relationship will surely head the way of Sophie's previous (or should I say current? relationship) with the other party sacrificing a lot for not much in return, with the same problems existing.

I also found the mystery and crime elements to be dragging and not intriguing to me. I couldn't care or get into it, probably because it's presented under Sophie's eye and her whole demeanor is so sour. I usually love British crime mysteries but this fell short. Sorry to say I won't read the sequel.

Kindle unlimited read, that others enjoyed so give it a go. Claire's other works are great!

This is awesome all around. The murder mystery is great, and Sophie and Rachel are lovely characters. I enjoyed how the relationship between these two evolved while the murder case developed and how the two plots are intertwined. This Detective Sophie Whitton story is definitely worth reading. 5 out of 5 stars.

Creative

Well, I certainly was entertained by the plot. While I was able to predict some things, I was never entirely certain until all was revealed.

Sophie is a detective who is trying to bring down a serial killer who leaves dolls as a calling card. So many avenues are explored and ruled out as we slowly progress through the story.

On a personal level, Sophie isn't satisfied. She is in a relationship where they are going through the motions because it's easier than ending things.

Winter has arrived and all aspects of life are providing challenges for her.

Rachel, a theatre nurse who isn't shy about what she wants could be a nice distraction for the detective or a really bad idea.

I thought this was a creative storyline. Some subject matter was a little intense. I didn't think it was entirely gruesome considering the theme of the book.

My only issue with this one was how things start between Sophie and Rachel. And also the flippant attitude of Rachel.

This was a good read and I recommend for anyone who enjoys crime, killers, mystery, and suspense.

This was AMAZING!!!!

A completely different genre than that usually written by Claire and it didn’t disappoint. The Doll Maker combined all the elements needed for a good thriller to keep the reader intrigued and guessing, with every turn of the page.

Sophie Whitton, the detective who is having the most stressful time with this confusing and troublesome case of the Doll Maker is a character you won’t be able to help but fall in love with. She’s the perfect definition of stressed, overworked and a total mess cop but that is what makes her so great! Despite her flaws (I don’t personally see them as these) she has a lot of emotion and vulnerabilities that are slowly revealed throughout this thrilling crime read!

When Rachel comes into her life, everything literally changes and Sophie is clueless as to what lays ahead; as is Rachel! Which just makes this story all the more thrilling and balances its more gruesome storyline with a little romance.

The clues in this book are great at keeping you guessing because it isn’t until the identity of The Doll Maker is revealed that you will kick yourself you didn’t figure it out sooner! It should be obvious, but as with any true crime, it’s harder to solve than you’d think. So you’ll be left sympathising with Soph’s frustration, then anger when she finally starts piecing the nonsensical puzzle together.

A truly amazing read that I wanted to savour every moment of but could have read in a day because it was just so addictive. I’m very much looking forward to reading more of Detective Sophie Whitton’s investigations and just loved this book.

A must read for any crime thriller lover that you won’t want to miss!!!! And even if crime isn’t usually your thing, give this a go and you might be surprised. Just a fantastic read!!!

Ok, seriously who doesn't love serial killer books? Oh wait, is that just me, can't be. There are way too many criminal mystery fans out there.

This book does give a honest portrayal of some forensic techniques & procedures but honestly results no matter what the case is take a good amount of time (pet peeve).

DI Sophie is your workaholic & determined cop who is the lead on the case. She lives with her girlfriend Yvonne, who doesn't like the hours or honestly her job.
Their relationship is tenuous at best, only to be tested during this hunt for the Doll killer.

Rachel is a nurse at the local hospital. Her work friend Becky is married to Sophie's partner Dale.

This is a good book that will take you for a ride, so best to buckle in.

Quite the mystery.

I enjoyed The Doll Maker. Is it proper to say you “enjoyed “ a book that is quite violent? The lead Detective Sophia is a great main character. The story and plot move right along. There is violence and disturbing images. Just so you are warned.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that I had figured out what was going to happen and who were involved pretty early on, but it didn’t disappoint regardless. I do love a thriller with disturbed characters.

The lead characters were intriguing, passionate and well developed which is always a plus!

I had this book on my TBR list for a while and I finally got around to reading it and really enjoyed it.

This is a hard-boiled police mystery that’s just gory and illicit enough to be a juicy read. There are lots of characters to keep things hopping, lots of clues and dead ends and a thrilling finish where everything comes together.

I actually was surprised at how much I liked Sophie and Rachel as a couple. Rachel comes across as strong, self-assured and actually communicates! The difference in how Sophie feels with her as opposed to Yvonne is sweet and hot in turn. The intimate scenes were described just enough before the FTB to keep the story from getting bogged down. This is primarily a murder mystery of a particularly grisly kind, and the not-quite-kosher nature of their relationship (at least at the start) isn’t a dealbreaker for me the way it would be if it was a pure romance.

Generally, it’s a smooth read but it does have some bumps. The POV hops around a lot without any warning and I was confused a few times and had to go back and re-read some scenes. The editing is spotty in places and there are some typos and tense mistakes.

The ending was sudden so I’m glad to see there is a sequel out. This was a fast, satisfying read that kept me guessing until the end.

You won't want to put this book down

A serial killer is on the loose. This book has many plot twists and turns to keep you hooked and guessing. On top of that there is a very strong female lead character who has to deal with her own vulnerabilities. Loved this book and can't recommend it highly enough.

I just finished the audio version of this book. It sat in my library for a few months while I finished up a series. I’m totally kicking myself in the ass for waiting. It was a nice change to what I had been listening too. The chemistry between Rachael and Sophie is amazing. Definitely going to start the second book very soon! Great job to the author!

I must admit, it was the creepiness of THIS cover that hooked me in. I was sold. Instantly. Yes, visuals, graphics, images are important to me especially when it comes to the thriller/mystery/paranormal/supernatural/horror genres. Having not read any of Claire Highton-Stevenson's books before, but had heard about her critically-acclaimed writing, and the fact that it was her first stab at writing in the crime/thriller genre, me curiosity was naturally piqued. And being a huge fan of this genre, especially when it's dark and psychological, PLUS with a cover like THIS one...very hard to keep me away. So I read it. In one single sitting.

Initially, I assumed the perp was just like any other serial killer who left messages beside their victims, i.e. note, playing card, toys, paraphernalia, dolls. I actually thought - ok, another woman-hating murderer. Then the murder scenes were reminiscent of Jack the Ripper's (you know what he did to his kills so you'll have to read this to draw your own conclusion). But then Highton-Stevenson turned this theme on its head with a refreshingly intriguing modus operandi which I totally was caught off-guard and simply loved the surprise! Frankly, having read so many dark crimes and thrillers, very rarely would I be surprised. Bloody well done, Highton-Stevenson! I'm officially impressed!

Lots of good things to say about this audiobook. Sophie, our main detective, is set on a case in which a series of women show up, all of them killed in strange ways and found with doll parts nearby. As she gets closer to finding the killer things spiral, and she finds the case takes a bigger personal hit than she imagined.

Sophie is a typical character in that she’s got plenty of baggage. What’s not typical about her though is the front she keeps up while her life is falling apart in the background. She uses her work as a form of escape because at home, she feels helpless. I loved the almost parallel feeling between the escalation of the killings and the downward spiral of Sophie’s relationship.

The killer itself turned out to have a very interesting reason for doing what was done. I’ve read so many thriller/crime books that it’s rare to find a story where the killer has a wild reason, but this is one of those books.

Overall, this is a dark and compelling listen. A great first-time mystery/thriller by the author.

Narration fit perfectly with the story.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Admittedly, murder mysteries are not my go-to genre, but I'm definitely game for a couple a year, and The Doll Maker was a great way to spend a few hours of my time. It seemed to be a better romance than it was a mystery novel, and because of that I wanted more of the romance. Essentially by trying to do both, it did neither justice. I think, in terms, of the mystery, I was able to figure things out a little too easily. And I think it's because the reader is privy to the killer's thoughts and some other characters too. I wish the perspective of the narrative would have been limited to what DI Whitton knows and hears. I kept wanting to yell at her and point out things she was missing, and that's not fair since I know more than she does. So I wish I could piece it together with her--to see if I can figure out with the information she knows.

As for the romance...

Despite its flaws, I did enjoy it. Did I love it? No, but I don't regret the time I spent with the novel.

Well I couldn't put it down; I didn't want to put it down because NaNoWriMo was my priority. That said...my goodness did I get the wrong perp! Well done Claire. I was truly surprised. The 'oh my gosh' factors were high and I so enjoyed the ending. Well, the story twisted, turned, and blew up and the writing was tight and descriptive. The life of a police detective is not fun. It's hard work and that came out in this story. Well done. Another book I've read by the author that doesn't disappoint.

Just finished reading The Doll Maker by Claire Highton-Stevenson. I'm not usually a fan of the crime/mystery genre but this book pulled me in from the very first page to the last word of the epilogue. I loved the character development, plot line and interesting twists to the story. Just when I thought that I had it all figured out, I'd realize that the story was just beginning.

I loved this book and would recommend that you listen to it as soon as possible!

Just finished this audiobook and oooo - it's a good one. The storyline is engrossing and keeps you on your toes. Detective Inspector Sophie Whitton leads a team trying to track down a serial murderer, while her relationship at home reaches a breaking point. How many will suffer until the sick and methodical assailant is caught? Can her relationship survive all the late nights required for her job? And who is the stunning nurse at the hospital shamelessly flirting with the attractive detective? All certainly worth discovering in this read! Highton-Stevenson nearly gave me a heart attack at one point, but because I was so invested in the outcome and these characters, I'll forgive her. lol Also impressive was narrator Fiona Thraille, who does a great job with the various voices and adds to the overall experience. Definitely recommend! 4.5 stars

This is romance writer Claire Highton-Stevenson's first mystery book, but from the way the plot unfolds, you would think she had been writing these for years! The plot is creepy, twisted, unsettling, and complex. Parts will gross you out, but still keep you turning the pages to find what it all means. I was guessing right up until the end!
The heroine, DI Sophie Whitton, is surly and sexy, and she's not someone you can count on to always do the right thing in her personal life. Sometimes, she screws up, and you want to shake her! But when it comes to seeking justice, she's unwavering.
And yes, there is some romance! I won't give away too much about that, but you do get to see some interesting developments in Sophie's love life. The plots stays mostly focused on the gritty murder mystery though, so if that's what you're after, you won't be disappointed!
