It takes a lot to wrote a book, and I hate giving a bad review when the story has potential, but honestly, this book is a hot mess.
The good-it has a great message. Body image and dealing with assault is something a lot of teens and adults face. Though, it was kind of brushed upon, and not the central theme. Also, psychological abuse is prevalent as well. Trigger warning is mild though, which I'll explain later.
Now the bad.
First off, the two authors on the book, and the jumping back and forth between who actually wrote it, is not just confusing, but makes you wonder if it's legitimately either person's work. Maybe it's the same person using a pen name, but this needs full disclosure to avoid confusion.
Next, the grammar issues. This gets me worked up, so bear with me. Tense mistakes, misspelled words, punctuation, missing and added words, and ellipse issues. The whole story suffered because of it. Editor. Editor. Editor. Please get one. Physic is not physique. Masses is not massive. They are completely different words, with completely different meanings.
There are also several inconsistencies in the timeline. For example, one minute they've known each other since elementary school, and the next it's only since freshman year. And what school takes a 5 minute break in the middle of class.
I also didn't feel as if Jaxon was authentic. The voice and style didn't feel different enough, and I often questioned whose pov it was. As for the trigger warning, there wasn't enough emotional charge over the assault. She cried more about the breakup than the attempt to rape her. Just doesn't resonate enough to seem real. Almost like it was glossed over, though the sexual innuendos were all over.
Again, it has potential, but still needs work. I can't bring myself to read anything further by either author.
For my clean readers: language-but no f-bomb. Violence-attempted rape and assault. Romance-kissing. Abusive parent over body image who also blames child for being the victim, as if she asked for it. Talk about v-cards and hooking up. Jokes about sex and sexual innuendos.
