I'm a writer, a pagan, and a witch, and consequently love all things magical. I write fictional books about witchcraft and the paranormal, and they are jam-packed with fabulous characters, colourful settings, plenty of action, and lots of humour.
I was born in England, in the Black Country, but moved to New Zealand in 2006. I lived near Wellington with my partner Jase, and my cats Sacha and Leia. However, in April 2022 we moved again! Yes, I like making my life complicated… I’m now living in the Algarve in Portugal, and loving the fabulous weather and people. When I’m not busy writing I read lots, indulge in gardening and shopping, and I love yoga.
Confession time! I’m a Star Trek geek – old and new – and love urban fantasy and detective shows. Secret passion – Columbo! Favourite Star Trek film is the Wrath of Khan, the original! Other top films – Predator, the original, and Aliens.
In a previous life I was a singer in a band, and used to do some acting with a theatre company. For more on me, check out a couple of my blog posts. I have also written a blog about how I finally became comfortable about calling myself a witch. It's called Leaning into my Witch.
Misled by high GR ratings, an Amazon sale, and the desire for something pink and fluffy, I gave this a shot. It is definitely part two, definitely takes itself seriously, and definitely has too many names (seriously, Alex, Avery, Addison, Anne, and Alicia?). When I read the biography of the author, I learned that she believes in witchcraft and calls herself a witch, which generally explains the tone. The writing isn't strong enough to make me care. Pass
This is the 2nd book in the White Haven Witches Series and I had really enjoyed book 1 but this 2nd book was even more spectacular, so full of action and getting a bit dark at times, which I love! Avery and her other witch friends are still looking for some of their grimoires which have been hidden since the 16th century when the witch finder had been set on their ancestors by the Faversham family with the result that Helena, Avery’s ancestor had been burned at the stake! Now the ancestors of the Faversham family are trying to get their hands on these same grimoires and they are extremely powerful and quite evil. Gil has already been killed by Caspian Faversham and the rest of the group are feeling threatened but are not ready to give up their inheritance. So the fight is on and it is fought with magic and no holds barred! This was a very exciting read with so much going on especially with Helena joining the fight at a great risk to Avery. I am also really enjoying the new budding romance between Alex and Avery and am sure the rest of the couples will pair off soon too and the romance balances out the evil and the dark side of the story really well. The descriptions of the old buildings, crypts, mausoleums and old churches in White Haven and the fantastic cast of characters have got me really hooked on this series and looking forward to book 3!
Magic Unbound is book two of the White Haven Witches.
These books are set in Cornwall in a coastal village which has historical links to the 17th century English Witch Trials. The modern descendants still practice some witchcraft skills and this story continues on from book one.
I recommend reading book one first. Avery and her friends are searching for ancient grimoires, but so are a family with darker intentions. With demons on the loose and time running out, how will they solve their mystery?
After reading book one I was interested in the story and bought book two straight away. This was a good conclusion to the events.
Devoured this book! It’s been a while since I read book 1 of the Whitehaven Witch trilogy but it was really easy to pick up from where 1 left off. The characters are very likeable and enjoying the developing relationship between Avery and Alex. The dastardly Favershams are just as evil and the other witches are getting closer and working better together as they try to find all their grimoires. There are many gasp out loud moments as well as humour and after the events of the previous book, you don’t know if they’ll all come out of this adventure alive! DI Newton comes into his own in this book and I look forward to plenty more adventures with the witches.
Ok ok ok. I know I said I wasn't going to read book two of this series. But after I finished book one and it just...stopped I needed to know what happens.
The thing is, the story is great. I love the concept and it harkens me back to the show Charmed. The way they are looking for and finding the grimoires is so good. I love the small town of white haven and its ambiance it adds to the story.
So this book. It was better. The writing was tighter and we got some things done in this book that I wanted from the first. I also enjoy that the witches have been paired up and it adds to the romance aspect that I enjoy. Once again this book just stopped, what feels like, suddenly. But before it ended we added another layer of threat.
It was good. I'm already listening to the third book and while I am still not positive I will read all 13, of think I will likely read more of them at least.
An excellent story about witches of old days and current descendants.
This is a good series about the witch trials, present day witches, and romance. There's a villian and heroines, and heroes. Enjoy the books and look forward to the future ones as well.
This is book two and it just gets better! He story line just gets better and the relationships between the characters is getting more intriguing. Can’t wait for book 3
Having been cross that the first book ended half way through the story, I have just finished book 2. In the author's notes at the back they make the distinction between their YA novels and this - which they call adult fiction - it still feels YA to me. The story itself and characters are enjoyable but the historical inaccuracies jar as you read - for example, when the characters are looking at the map, searching for house locations they talk about the roads and houses being from the 1500s but then talk about a house on the edge of town being number 51 - the first ever house numbers were, I think, in London in the late 17th century - certainly not in small Cornish fishing towns and cottages on the edge of town wouldn't have been numbered at all - far more likely to be named. (I will stand corrected if I have it wrong.) Secondly, the wording used for some of the stuff from the 1590s grimoires seems far too modern - I get that the story is important and the jarring is small but it spoils it for me when I like my historically influenced witch fiction (Deborah Harkness et al.) credible. I kept asking questions about whether things were right, which interrupted the narrative. I wanted to like these books more and am not sure I will continue with the series.
Totally enthralled, read it in one day. I was captured from page one the excitement, the magic and the mystery surrounding the witching families was rendered in glourious prose full of colour, descriptions of the characters and their struggles with the demons and the other witch family. Grab a coffee, curl up and lose yourself in a fabulous book. Highly recommend.
Book Review: Magic Unbound (White Haven Witches #2) by T.J. Green
T.J. Green’s Magic Unbound, the second installment in the White Haven Witches series, continues to enchant readers with its rich blend of magic, mystery, and character development. Picking up where the first book left off, this sequel dives deeper into the lives of its protagonists, exploring new challenges and the evolving dynamics of their relationships.
Plot Overview
In Magic Unbound, we follow the courageous witches of White Haven as they face escalating threats that challenge their magical abilities and test their bonds. The story unfolds against a backdrop of danger, ancient secrets, and the ever-present lure of power. Green does an excellent job of pacing the narrative, balancing action with moments of character introspection, which keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
Character Development
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its character development. Green delves into the complexities of each witch’s personality, unveiling their fears, motivations, and desires. The protagonist, who has grown significantly since the first book, grapples with her newfound powers and the responsibilities that come with them. As relationships deepen among the witches, the themes of loyalty, trust, and self-discovery are beautifully woven into the fabric of the story.
Themes of Magic and Empowerment
Magic Unbound explores themes of empowerment and the consequences of wielding magic. Green illustrates how magic can be both a blessing and a curse, as characters navigate the ethical dilemmas that arise from their abilities. The portrayal of female empowerment through the witches’ journeys is particularly compelling, emphasizing strength, resilience, and the importance of community.
Writing Style and Atmosphere
T.J. Green’s writing style is vivid and immersive, drawing readers into the enchanting world of White Haven. Her descriptions are lush and detailed, creating a strong sense of place that enhances the magical atmosphere of the story. The dialogue feels authentic and relatable, helping to further develop the characters and their relationships.
Conclusion: A Spellbinding Sequel
Magic Unbound is a worthy follow-up to the first book in the White Haven Witches series. T.J. Green expertly blends magical elements with relatable character arcs, creating a story that is both engaging and thought-provoking. Readers will find themselves captivated by the witches’ journeys, eager to uncover what lies ahead in their world. This book is highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy and those who enjoy tales of magic, friendship, and self-discovery. With its enchanting narrative and strong character development, Magic Unbound will leave readers spellbound and eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.
Buried Magic #1 - My first read by this author. I enjoy witches and the Cornwall area, and this story has both, plus the histories of several of the families trace back past the 1500s. Tie in a couple more magical, or not, families with suspicious agendas, and occult dimensional portals allowing demons passage to White Haven. There are many interesting storylines that do a good job of keeping the reader's interest, along with the premonitions, intrigue and suspense at a fast pace. The characters have enough substance and personalities, they add to the story; along with the emotions created throughout the story. An elderly historian opened a big can of troubles when she left the family histories of the witches, along with plenty of secrets and the search for their unknown missing grimoires.
The author was a bit wordy about nonessentials, such as clothing and repeated "I am/we are witches" and I'm so bored with all the good looking people in books; aren't there any real people anymore? This story continues into the next book Magic Unbound, so don't expect a conclusion yet. I contacted the author to review this book when I found MU on Booksprout. 3.5*
Magic Unbound #2 - This story picks up three days after Buried Magic ends. Secrets after secrets, from all sources, come to light, including the connection of one of the unknown families. I have to laugh that these witches don't use their magic for searches and can't dry themselves when drenched; a little inconsistency there. As much as I like Avery and Alex, there was too much unnecessary emphasis on their relationship at the expense of the other witch characters, along with too much detail on clothing and looks; rather simplistic plotting, which drags the story down. The story is flowing smoothly with a bit of substance and then come to a stop for a silly commercial; annoying distractions.
Needs editing to tighten the story and correct errors. Why possessive and plural are so confusing nowadays to authors is beyond me. Family's is used for: families; families'; family's. Soul's is used in place of Souls. They're for they are. This story sets the foundation for the next book in the series. I found this book on Booksprout. 3.5*
An addicting fantasy read of family heirlooms and a legacy waiting to be unleashed and returned to its rightful home. Deceits are revealed threatening to tear the newly forming Coven apart as they fight to support one another while battling a determined rival family who seeks to destroy the White Haven Coven and stealing their heritage. Alliances are formed and as the awaiting secret is unveiled along with complications from the past unwilling to let go. Avery is grieving the loss of a newly formed friend, fighting to save and support her Coven and friends while helping to recover the missing grimoires. Avery is fierce and strong willed female lead, determined to do what’s right and find her place in the magical community and unwilling to be bullied into submission. Alex is just as powerfully strong mentally and physically, absorbing the lessons of the past while being cautious and protective of his present and future with his newly formed Coven and friends. As the supporting characters struggle and deal with their grief in different ways, they still understand and knows what right and true for them, coming together in forgiveness and support while uncovering their long lost legacy. The romance blossoming between the main characters Avery and Alex is sweet and innocent as they explore the growing connection and solidify their communication exclusive relationship. The other hopeful romance between the other Coven members is exciting and just as innocently sweet. With the fall of an enemy another rises revealing more secrets and a hidden society willing to extend the invitation and explain the repercussions of the White Haven Coven. I’m addicted to the series and adore everything about it, wish there was more different characters perspectives for they all sound so intriguing and it would make the experience more personal.
I recently read the first in this series, Buried Magic, which left too many threads dangling so I wanted to continue!
What I liked...
A lot of action
Hidden grimoires, witchcraft, determination and good motives of characters. A bit of a mystery and a bit of danger! This basically sums up my feelings about it. I quite enjoyed the premise of one of the characters towards the end (I can't really explain or it will contain spoilers)
Sometimes the writing was quite simple but I didn't mind much especially when my brain was tired. It was a bit repetitive (hence a star dropped). We find a little bit more about a couple of characters and there are also some new characters introduced.
I felt there weren't as many things left unanswered/unsolved at the end of this book as at the end of the first one. I liked it more than the first one, probably due to more action.
I just enjoyed this quite a lot and in the end, that's what's important.
Narration was fine. Occasionally certain words weren't emphasised the way they should be, but it didn't affect my enjoyment and it was easy to understand. Sped it up as narration and sometimes plot is a bit slow (Ebook says estimated read time is about 4 hrs and the audiobook is about 7hrs long).
A spectacular book, I was totally enthralled and captured from page one. So full of: excitement, action, suspense, romance, magic, surprise and mystery surrounding the witching families, getting a bit dark at times. An exhilarating story of 5 witches, trying to gain back their family’s powers, while learning to control their own magical powers. A very exciting read with so much going on, new budding romance; the romance balances out the evil. White Haven's favorite coven finally comes full circle with the histories/mysteries of their families and the secrets of their legacy.
The story is fascinating and flowed smoothly, I really enjoyed this book and read it one day. A fantastic cast of characters, with their relationships are witnessed evolving, as you read this book. I liked the descriptions of architecture of the old buildings, crypts, mausoleums and old churches in White Haven; really hooked me in to this series and I am looking forward to reading book 3. I received an ARC of this book, thank you T. J. Green, in return for my honest thoughts and feelings of the book. I am honored to give this book a 4.5-star rating.
The story continues shortly after the end of the first book. The search for the grimoires continues, and they learn a lot they didn't know.
I loved seeing more of the magical world, knowing more of the past, and discovering that they have allies unknown to them.
The characters have grown, they have matured (by force, like Reuben). They accept their magic more, they accept each other more, they don't doubt the others. They argue, they don't always agree on everything, but they come to decisions together.
I loved the romance between Alex and Avery, and seeing it grow. She has doubts, he hurts when she doubts. They don't say it, but it's obvious that they love each other, and everyone sees it.
And, although it still hurts, I also loved to see the repercussions after Gil's death. It's been hard to lose him, and it's not easy to adapt, let alone with everything they have to do.
There are a couple of details I didn't expect. And another that I did expect, and I loved to see.
I recommend it.
I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
4... close to 3.5 honestly but I'll bump it up. This book still suffers from some of the issues of the previous book. After reading this one, I've narrowed it down to mostly pacing issues. Scenes that should be longer are short, scenes that should be short are longer. It's mostly the latter, things that seem really important happen very quickly. Like there's a scene at the end where It's very odd. The resolution with was also too quick. I thought more detail could/should have been devoted to
Like I said before, the bones of these books are so good. The universe, the magic, etc. The characters could use more attention (especially those other than Avery/Alex) and I think if the pacing was fixed, it would have been amazing. But I'll keep reading because they're quick reads and I'm into it enough to want more haha. I need to see how it turns out.
ONE INCREDIBLE READ!!! Wow! Talk about hitting the ground running. This is one action packed, fast paced nailbiting, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, smooth flowing, page turning bombshell that grabs your attention from the start. A whirlwind of emotions and events that really make this storyline pop. All the twists and turns, unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises around every corner make for one incredibly wild experience. As the drama, fear, betrayal, deceit, lies, danger and suspense increases and the tension spirals as the plot thickens and the story unfolds. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together beautiful. Green did a wonderful job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Green, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
The story entices you and hooks you very early on in the book.
Book 1 of this series was a super starter, book 2 beats it. It was fun reconnecting with Avery and her coven in their quest to find their family's ancient grimoires. This book had a lot of darkness to it. Apart from the evil entity that is looking for these grimoires, there is also a witch hunt which is hell bent on targeting Avery & her friends.
Where there is darkness there is also light. The light comes in the form of the budding romance between Avery & Alex.
All in all a fabulous read and very highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a great follow up to book 1. So much so that I recommend read them back to back. It would've worked great as a bigger book too. White Haven's favourite coven finally comes full circle with the history of their families and the secrets of their legacy. The characters and their relationships could be seen evolving, even with the point of view being only from Avery's side. It has left a good hook for a follow up book, but I'd consider this as a finished series and the next as a spin off, maybe from another member of the coven's point of view.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I hadn’t read the 1st book and that’s my own fault so it as no surprise that I was confused about a few things I should know better but no matter what I did enjoy this story. There’s action, adventure, danger, suspense, romance and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages, it’s a great story but you do need to read book 1 or you will be like me a little confused about things but I plan to rectify that and get book 1 and start from the beginning. It’s a very nice exciting story but don’t be a dunce like me lol, a fantastic story and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
I raced through writing this, as it picks up directly from where Buried Magic finishes. We get to explore more of White Haven - which is by-the-way a fictional town, but it encompasses all of the characteristics of a Cornish town.
Avery’s relationships with the other witches grow, and her romance with Alex gets a little more interesting! We learn a lot more about who’s threatening the witches, and there’s plenty more action and danger. I take the characters to some real places in Cornwall, the Truro Museum and Library is real, but I’ve taken some liberties!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. There’s more to come in the series - Magic Unleashed is on the way.
This book picks up where it left off in book one. The search for the grimoires continues. Some interesting revelations are made.
Avery is still looking for her grimoire and locating it isn't easy. Her relationship with Alex develops at a steady pace. The five families of witches work well together and are determined to achieve their objectives. They have some surprises along the way. The characters are well portrayed and the storyline is mesmerising.
I enjoyed this installment as much as I enjoyed the first one. There is a good balance of magic, mayhem, mystery, friendship, loyalty and romance.
This book is as good as if not a bit better than the first book in the series!
In this book, we learn more about some other characters besides Avery. It appears that something or someone is hunting/stalking the members of the witch community who have formed themselves into a coven. This book also continues the plot of the first book so we learn more about the grimoires and where they have been hidden.
The characters are better fleshed out and we, the readers, are learning about the town in which they live. The writing is fresh and well-defined. I love the romance between Avery and Alex and I especially love that there are (so far) NO SEX SCENES!
TJ Green shines again in this series of books. I have been fortunate to have received them as a reviewer and really do recommend this book. Though I do not believe in retelling the story, I can assure you will become engrossed as you follow Avery and her friends through this adventure as they set about recovering their full magical powers. These powers had been withheld from their individual family lines as payment toward locking away a truly evil witch and her demon slave. I voluntarily offer my review of this book
I am very much enjoying your series of books so far and am yet to read more! I love the story line and the characters involved. I am full blood Cornish myself from Penzance, I know and understand about the Celtic/Pagan way of life also. There are areas of which "English" people will never understand how true Cornish people think and feel! I am yet to feel the true cornishness coming out in your stories. However I absolutely love reading them and am unable to stop reading. So on to book 4 right now.
