In this postapocalyptic fantasy, a sea of sand swallows everything but the past.

In an endless sea of sand drifts the Mud Whale, a floating island city of clay and magic. In its chambers a small community clings to survival, cut off from its own history by the shadows of the past.

The promised land of Amonlogia has turned out to be a nightmare for the people of the Mud Whale. Suou and the Unmarked are being held hostage, and in order to save them, Ouni and Chakuro agree to serve the duke as soldiers. Orca’s forces and an inevitable bloody battle draw ever closer, but the duke has a far darker mission in mind for Ouni—one that will rock the very foundations of Amonlogia!

In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!

The Premise

In Children of the Whales vol 10, the mud whale has finally arrived at Amonlogia ... only for them to learn their life and role in their new country is greatly different than they were lead to believe. Hostages were taken, Lycos has left, Orca is on his way and the marked are in an uproar. Suou learns Amonlogia has her own supernatural weapons... if war breaks out it will be two powerful nations going head to head. I really appreciated how the marked reacted to the ultimatum from Rochalízo's father. How good is Ouni and Chakuro?! Lycos surprised me most of all with her marking the arrival of Karcharias... and finding the trail of her brother, Orcas.

The Buzz

Liontari's role is fascinating as he illustrates the contrast Orcas is between what he feels and what he does. Truly what is Orcas purpose in Children of the Whales vol 10?! He gathers all of these discarded souls whom he obviously feels for... what is so important that he is throwing these lives on the heap of his ambition?! The more I learn of Orcas the more questions I have and the more I want to know. Lycos is actively learning more about her brother and is trying to mesh how he's acting to what she knows of him from the past. Will the two meet somehow and resolve? I'm dying to know more!!

The Feels

YES!! Ouni has finally embraced who he is because of the power he holds. He wants to go out alone and die magnificently as he knows he can. But Chakuro the boy who won't let go refuses to allow him to go off alone. They form a plan. A plan of that is fool hardy but may get them out of their current difficult situation. That they don't want to leave without the unmarked is sweet and may save them in the end I suspect. Children of the Whales vol 10 puts all the characters we love on the line as powerful nations line up for war with the mud whale caught in between!

The Visuals

The Amonlogia brothers are all action in Children of the Whales vol 10! They have instigated the plot against the mud whale since Rochalízo brought them there. We get to see a pitched battle between Amonlogia and the invaders with their powers in action!! It was really neat but also quite worrying as they were very even in strength. We learn why Orcas is so tolerated by his superiors despite his odd focuses and willingness to go against orders to follow them. It's getting to be a war out here and its exciting and gorgeous (just look at that cover if you don't believe me)!

Children of the Whales vol 10 shows us why Amonlogia is running scared and want the marked as weapons. Ouni and Chakuro act just as two nations move against the mud whale on agendas of their own. Will the mud whale be destroyed caught in the middle?! We'll have to find out in the next volume of this super dystopian fantasy series...

With the Marked of Falaina agreeing to become soldiers for Amonlogia as their Unmarked are held hostage, they are preparing, in their way, for battle. Meanwhile, Orca has arrived with his ship to attack Amonlogia, so they are being deployed in battle against him. However, he has different plans, and instead of attacking the port city, goes around to attack the farside of the island, where there are some mines, and more importantly, the Duke's castle where the Unmarked are also held hostage. The Marked thus have to go, if only to use this distraction to free the Unmarked. Ouni is ready to go all out, but our adorable Chakuro and Ginshu have a 'leave no man behind' policy and they all hatch a plan to get the Unmarked out while seeming to do what is expected of them.

On the mythology, we get more insight into the working of Amonlogian technology as well as their mythos, and some glimpses into Orca's plans. Ouni's existence as a Thanatas is pretty much cemented at this point, and it will be interesting to see how he factors in Orca's schemes. The action is tense in this one, with so many players on the board - the Duke, the Marked's two teams, Lykos who has gone missing, Orca and his army of kids, the Duke's sons - and their goals working with and against each other.

More action here, but emotion is still there too! I can't wait to see how the children of the whale will get out of this situation!

The inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been split into two. There is the Unmarked, who are trapped in Duke Dachtyla’s dungeon. Then there are the Marked, who are desperately trying to save the Unmarked as the threat of the Allied Empire looms over Amonlogia.
The sons of the Duke try desperately to push Karcharías back, in order to stop the invaders, but Orca chooses to take his own two feet to land, along with a trusted group he’s personally raised. What will happen as he, Lykos, and a group from the Mud Whale all march to Amonlogia’s capitol?

I see now why the Duke of Amonlogia has been acting so irrationally and erratically, extremely unlike himself. Of course it’s because of a prophecy, but as so often happens, he got the figures wrong. The Mud Whale and all of its inhabitants served as but a distraction while a more dire threat loomed on the horizon. And perhaps Orca is Thanatás, and not Ouni, unlike as the Duke of Amonlogia had suspected.

Also, the twins aren’t necessarily wrong in assuming Lykos to be a spy or something similar. The reader, and her close friends in the story, have known her thus far to be a stranded former soldier of the Allied Empire, now taken in by the inhabitants of the Mud Whale. She struggled to fit in for a long while, but she at last has, and she’s even given up all manner of knowledge on the Empire in order to help the inhabitants of the Mud Whale. But what if all of it was a calculated trap? Or this “betrayal” of the Empire doesn’t actually impede her true mission? The story has not revolved around Lykos for several volumes now and even the story itself is beginning to amass suspicion on Lykos, especially with spies from the Empire claiming Lykos to be a spy as well for the Empire on the Mud Whale. They could be liars, their information could be a misunderstanding, or it could be outdated. Perhaps she started that way, perhaps she’s the reason for that initial attack but it has long since changed. And if so, obviously she’s never, and might never, tell them the truth, because how could she? It was a catastrophic event that catapulted their peaceful lives into seemingly never-ending tragedy and peril. Speaking of Lykos, her brother Orca is an amazing force. I now see why he seems so indispensable despite the storms he had caught himself up in with the Empire. He’s just as valuable to a ship as a Nous, so said a spy and so says I, as a reader. No wonder that board from a previous volume seemed to chastise him with such a heavy heart (so to speak, as none of them seemed to feel remorse, only an inconvenience). No wonder it was a discussion and not an automatic execution… despite them having already decided. Though, with his charismatic charm and his intelligence, he was able to talk his sentence exceedingly far down. Almost unbelievably so, as his charm and intellect alone saving him didn’t make sense in that moment, but now that I see the berth of his worth to the Allied Empire, it does. He’s absolutely incredible with his command of a ship’s artillery forces, aka, he’s a human cannon. He needs no men, only weaponry and his use of thymia. All of it while completely stone cold and calm as well. Orca has an incredible, overwhelming presence that demands the surrender of any ship or territory that might be so unfortunate as to find itself in his own ship’s wake.

Orca arrives on the scene and brings war to Amonlogia. Can the duke convince the Mud Whale to aid the defense of his duchy? And what mystery lies in the depths of the castle? There is a lot of action again in this volume, and Abi Umeda is up to the task with her wild, expansive art-filled pages. It’s impressive how much detail is packed into each panel. And, even with all that detail, the action is clear, transitions are sensible, and characters are consistent. This remains one of a handful of manga titles that I always have on pre-order before publication. It is an exceptionally drawn and imagined series. I am all in! You should be too!

"Open your box of memories on the edge of death. You march in the festival of reminiscence, ten of you consumed as one blue snake, dragging a faded banner, making the pebbles in the sand dance, when the sunset pierces the mountain and blood runs down its slope. Your compound eyes, like shattered glass beads, reflect multitudes of the melted ridgeline.
My swift-winged brothers... every time you flap your wings, your heartbeat spills over like a shimmer of heat. Vanity is etched at the foot of misery. And the insects march again."

This is going to be the arc that sees us through to the end of the conflict it seems between our group on the mud whale and the brother of Lykos (which now is dragging in Amoglonia's Falaina or whatever, the spiritual god being that controls it or something).

Basically, these few volumes I'm on edge about what will happen, but I'm glad how things are turning out so far... We shall see what happens in 12 and then 13.

Definitely prefer these action-filled volumes to others. Because plot development happens as well. We got a surprise visit now everyone is racing against each other to achieve what they want. Everyone is so young. It's sad.

This volume lost me a little.
The mud whale inhabitants are still trying to save Suou and the others on the island, while Suou and the others are being threatened and hurt, and Rochalizo is being a weak boi against his cruel father. And then there's Ouni, who's kind of accepted his role and is finally willing to fight with the mud whale people to win this battle.
There's a lot happening in this volume. There's the mud whale debate and rescue mission happening, there's the struggle between Suou and Rochilizo and Rocholizo's father, and then there's a couple of side battle of wills happening at the same time. Lykos, for instance, is off on her own.
This battle is turning out bigger than I expected, and I think going to be uglier than I thought, too.
