Cozy up with this wintry journey! A girl and her father race their plow through a snowstorm.
Will they make it to the train station in time? And who's waiting for them?
This timeless seasonal classic captures the thrill of snow and the warmth of family. In the midst of a whirling snowfall, a girl and her father pile into their big red snow plow. Through slippery streets, up winding hills, they race-- clearing the snow and heading for the train station to meet a very special traveler.
Accomplished author April Jones Prince's beautiful rhyming text is just right for one or two readers. Featuring expressive paintings by the beloved illustrator of the New York Times best selling series The Very Fairy Princess, Christine Davenier, Snowy Race is a perfect rhyming read-aloud.
It's a very special day, a day when a little girl gets to ride along with her dad on his snow plow. Told in simple rhyming couplets, readers follow a young girl as she wakes up one snowy morning, gets dressed, eats breakfast, and, all bundled up, she's off with dad to get the snow plow out of the garage. Plowing through fields and town until arriving at the train station. My young readers loved the fact that none of their predictions about why father and daughter ended up at the train station. Were they going to race the train? Trains are too fast for snow plows. I loved the look of surprise when we turned the page and saw the girl running towards an arriving passenger. Her mom? Her favorite auntie? Her beloved grandma? Then, it's a race home to a cozy warm house with mom AND dad. This was an exciting picture book to share with my kids because there was so much to speculate about based on other snow plow books we've read, but it turned out to be such a different story. The couplets are short but very expressive, capturing the little girl's excitement at riding in the plow with her dad, racing to the train station in time in such a heavy snowstorm, and greeting her mom. The illustrations are done in a pastel palette with ink and manage to evoke both the cold of the snow storm and the warmth of the family at the same time. We've read this book in F&G form and it's been loved a lot. Needless to say, I can't wait to get the hardcover available November 26, 2019 for our little library of favorite picture books.
During a snowstorm, a girl and her dad travel through the town in a red snowplow to pick up the the mom at the train station. The end papers show the snowy route, and young children will be enthralled about the adventure of riding in a snow plow.

A young girl is excited because someone is on their way to her and after breakfast and getting ready she gets to take a snow plow through the roads and into town. At the train station she gives a woman a hug and returns home in the snow plow.
This book left me mostly confused. It felt like a book about helping her dad in the snow plow, but it was all framed by the mystery of picking up someone from town. There was not a lot of text to clarify things and in the end I’m not clear on whether it was her mom who was returning home or someone else. I did think it was cute how the illustrator kept putting the girl’s booster seat in picture, making it very clear she was safe.
This one is a 3.5 for me, and I found myself almost as charmed by it in its own way as the much earlier Snowy Day, which it brought to mind in some ways. In this picture book, though, a little girl awakens with excitement once she remembers that someone special is coming. The illustrations, created with pencil and ink, show her bustling about quickly as she prepares to join her father in his snowplow. The streets are covered in mounds of snow, and it will take hard work for that truck to make to its destination. The use of rhyming text and onomatopoeia makes this one fun to read aloud, and those of us that live in places where there is a lot of snow can easily relate to the last line in the book indicating that the trip back home might be just as challenging as the one to town. The book's concluding double-page spread pulses with life, warm, and security as one little family, cat included, curls up in the warmth of their home while winter's weather keeps on making its presence known. It's encouraging to see a family enjoying their time together as is shown here with not a care in the world about what's going on outside their front door.
This book has amazing illustrations. I felt like the text was lacking but my two year old loved the story. She loved looking at the pictures and listening to me read it to her. I felt like it could have more of a story-line to the book. But it's perfect for little kids who don't have a huge attention span. I loved how they had a snow plow as sometimes it feels like we need one. Check out this book.
This is such a sweet wintery story. A little girl is super excited to get to help her daddy plow the freshly falling snow. With bright, snappy text we follow her wintery adventure. I love the surprise at the satisfying end. Full of action words and textured artwork that depict winter and family relationships perfectly, this is a delight.
This story is a beautiful story about a girl who gets to ride with her father in a snowplow. What kid hasn’t dreamed of doing that! They are plowing through the snow to pick up a very special passenger. I loved the vintage like illustrations. It definitely brought me back to my childhood. Thank you Ms. Prince for gifting this book to my students.
"Flurry flurry. Hurry hurry." Hurry to get yourself a copy of this charming picture book. Prince draws us into the action with sparse and poetic text, while Davenier captures the magic of a new snowfall and the warmth of family. Perfect book to read at bedtime or on a snowy day, of course. This story weaves a sense of calm and quiet that is a relief in these busy times.
The book "Snowy Race," by April Jones Prince is a delightful book about the magic of snow all over the ground and the adventure with Dad to try to get to the train station in time to meet and important visitor. Will they make it in time and who is the important visitor? Read Snowy Race to find out.
This book takes place during the wintry season, but it will warm your heart. It's a sweet story about family. The rhyming text and illustrations perfectly capture the snowy weather and the girl's anticipation and joy. This will be a delight to read aloud when winter arrives.
My thing with rhyming is if you're going to do it, do it well or don't do it at all. There is one rhyme that doesn't work, and I'm just like, sigh. It's a sweet idea though, going to pick up your family member at the end.
Rhyming story of little girl getting to ride in father's snowplow to pick up someone special in the race to pick up and then get home again. Lovely illustrations, love of family portrayed. This book is an Accelerated Reader book of 1.5 and beginning readers will enjoy.
I loved this book! A child wakes up on a day her Grandma will take her Grand Neice to work. The work comes as a truck with a snow plow. Together they battle the weather with steady rhythm and rhymes. The story ends with a lovely surprise!
On a snowy day a little girl gets to go with her dad plowing snow. After that they make a special trip to the airport. In just over 100 words and quick rhyme, this nicely illustrated story is easy for young readers.
A little girl and her dad drive a snowplow through the streets of town, in a race to get to the train station on time to pick up mom. Cute wintery story focusing on family.
This had pretty cute illustrations, but didn't love the flow of the book. I'm not sure why, maybe it was the rhyming, maybe it was knowing that snow/winter is coming. It was just ok, that's all.
