Eric the Red had a furious (and dangerous) temper which I'm sure made him red-in-the-face numerous times.

He got himself into trouble various times with his rather murderous temper, forcing him and his family to move and banning him from a country for several years. The book goes into his origin, his marriage and where he lived and what he did. It also covers his voyages of exploration which possibly made him the original 'discoverer' of the North American continent.

(Which history books tend to avoid that North America was actually officially discovered by people thousands of years before any Europeans set foot on the continent.)

The book also covers the forms of life and government in Iceland, Norway and Greenland. It also discusses the various raids that the Vikings are really known for.

One of the most interesting things I found was that the Vikings at that time (perhaps around 950 CE) actually had a backgammon-type of game. Another really fascinating thing is that the Vikings tended to marry young, around as young as 12. (Remember, life span was much shorter back then.)

Other topics covered include the Viking sagas, trading patterns and a good bit about King Olaf and his persecution (and murder) of anyone refusing to convert to Christianity. It also discusses why the settlement the Vikings made in North America did not survive and what happened to the Greenland settlement.

I found this to be a captivating book – it brings Eric the Red into real life, He had red hair, was strong, great warrior, enjoyed fights, was a great seaman, a farmer, a founder of new places for him and his family and fellow Vikings to live. It also explained a lot about their way of life. As hard as it was basically they were a fair and just community just trying to survive in a cold inhospitable country, Greenland. This is a great way to teach and/or just learn about history. An enjoyable, couldn’t put down read!

I love reading about Vikings, I love watching shows with Vikings and I like commercials with Vikings. I also know that Vikings are not nice to non-Vikings.

With that disclaimer, i was excited to read about Erik the Red. I was not disappointed! Captivating History has done it again. I’m really enjoying reading this series.

Brief and factual

Quick read, no embellishment. Not many details available due to lack of written history of the time. Glad I read it.

This is a brief introduction to the fascinating Viking Eric the red. I liked how it referenced other texts, and explained why there might be discrepancies in the stories about his son Leif.
