Two teens break into a long-abandoned insane asylum. Neither walks out.
Atlas James and Emmett Powell are best friends determined to make a name for themselves no matter the cost. They enter the dilapidated mental hospital eager to find a ghost or relic that will become their claim to fame. Instead, they vanish without a trace.
As friends and family learn of their disappearance, fear gives way to accusations and dark secrets come to light. Everyone in the small town has something to hide, and anyone could be behind what happened to the teens.
Somebody knows the truth, but no one’s talking. Will the community push aside their differences and come together for the sake of the missing boys? Or will more lives be destroyed to keep long-buried secrets hidden?
Only a confession will yield answers. But honesty is the one thing in short supply.
Stacy Claflin writes about complex women overcoming incredible odds. Whether it's her Gone trilogy of psychological thrillers, her ongoing Transformed paranormal saga, or her Seaside Hunters sweet romance series, Stacy's three-dimensional heroines shine through.
Decades after she wrote her first stories on construction paper and years after typing on an inherited green screen computer that weighed half a ton, Stacy realized her dream of becoming a full-time author.
When she's not busy writing or educating her kids from home, Stacy enjoys watching TV shows like Supernatural, Pretty Little Liars, and Once Upon a Time.
Lies Never Sleep is the latest by author Stacy Claflin. I am SO confused by the myriad 5 star reviews! While for Ms. Claflin lies may not sleep, this book certainly sent me off to the land of Wynken, Blynken and Nod. When searching for a way to begin this review, I first went back to see the genre in which this was listed. I honestly couldn’t tell if it was YA or a suspense/mystery novel, as it had some elements of both. In the end, however, neither should be written as if penned by a fifteen year old.
My first hint at the inadequacies of the writing happened in the first two pages where the word “building” appears no less than six times. Surely a thesaurus would have been wise if the writer was at a loss for words—edifice, structure, construction? Then, sentences like these began to pop up on page after page:
“The flashlight dropped from his grasp and bounced down the stairs. The person shoved him. Atlas fell down the stairs.”
It felt like I was reading a Dick and Jane book—“This is Dick. See Dick run. This is Jane.” It made me want to simultaneously scream and burn every page as a sacrifice to the creative writing gods. Unfortunately, it was on my Kindle, so that was a cost that I wasn’t prepared to incur.
I could gripe about the inane secondary story lines that peppered this read, or the implausibility of the primary plot, or even the juvenile dialogue. Suffice it to say, I recommend that you run from this and get as far away as possible, before the allure of Kindle Unlimited sucks you in with the promise of a thriller that just simply isn’t there.
This is a fast read, and thoroughly intriguing. Two young teenage boys Atlas James and Emmett Powell go to explore and video tape what they find in an allegedly haunted mental asylum where mass murders occurred years ago. But now they've gone missing. What a great beginning! I really enjoyed this thriller, and it kept me guessing until the end. Check it out for a great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's was the first time I've ever read anything by Stacy Claflin, but it was a thrill ride, like others I've read lately. From the beginning, I was caught up in the lives of these two families, starting with two teenage best friends barking upon a mission that many teens today would find exciting. Now, the end, that's one I never saw coming. A complete twist that I had no idea the story was headed toward. Big, big surprise. Blew me away!!! I've read many of the other reviews on this book, some favorable, some not, but, I stand by my review. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it!!!
Mind blowing read! I loved the story. Had me on the edge. I couldn't stop reading. I couldn't believe it the ending was WOW! Didn't see that coming. This is a MUST read! Intense with twists that will blow your mind.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The storyline was okay, although it started better than it ended. I found the characters unlikeable, and I won't lie, I really wanted to climb into the book and smack Morgans wife. Her response to his secret was so infuriating. I also felt that the book was a little repetitive at times, I lost count how many times Zion told his wife she needed to eat or sleep and the reasons why. I had a few other issues with the book, but I really hate being too harsh when reviewing books so I will leave it at that. This was nearly a DNF for me, I only finished because I wanted to know what happened. As always, though, these thoughts are purely mine alone, and I always encourage people to read books for themselves rather than rely on my review. I have some more books from this author on my kindle, so I will be giving her work another chance.
Stacy Claflin is an author that writes paranormal, sweet romance, and thrillers. I am a HUGE fan of her thrillers. Lies Never Sleep is a thriller that I couldn’t put down. I was kept on the edge of my seat, turning page after page, reading word after word, and guessing as to how had taken Atlas and Emmett.
I had so many guesses, there were so many clues but until Stacy decided to share the answer I never got it right. I loved that once it was shared who was guilty that it all made sense. The author has an amazing talent of taking a story, pulling it all together, and tying it up perfectly. Lies Never Sleep has everything I look for in a thriller. There is family dynamics, which are not always neat and clean. The friendships are true and strong until they are not. The clues shared throughout the story tell the real story and when it all comes together it all makes sense. With each book I read of Stacy’s she proves herself to be a go-to author for me. I highly recommend picking up your own copy of Lies Never Sleep. It will keep you awake at night with the need to read just a little more, which turns into a lot more and then ends up being the entire book.
When I started reading and found two boys, Atlas and Emmett, who were heading to an abandoned asylum, I thought I had to stop since I can't deal with such a thrilling story. Well, I couldn't give up and good thing I didn't since this book is brilliant. The boys get kidnapped at the asylum and that's just the start of more drama to come. Atlas' parents are going through a rough time once his mother Lila finds out her husband lied to her for almost 20 years. Meanwhile Emmett's dad Zion has to deal with a freaked out wife of a former client who ended up in jail. Both sets of parents are doing what they can to get the boys back and you'll be surprised to find out who's behind this all. No spoilers here though.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Stacy writes great thrillers and this one did not disappoint.....LOVED it!
Great storyline with 2 best friends heading off to make themselves famous with a video shot inside a creepy location only to have it all go wrong when they are kidnapped. The story unfolds around them with 2 different families and friends discovering secrets about each other. I had a few thoughts along the way as to who the kidnapper was but was wrong and when it hit that moment in the book where it became clear who it was it was like....oooohhhh, ahhhhhh, that's good, now why? Thoroughly entertaining and page turning.
This story is about two families whose sons, who are best friends, are abducted and confined for several days. Both families have secrets they have been hiding, and those secrets come out during the time the boys are missing.
The book was good all the way through, and I was able to follow the story and identify with the characters. It's well written and has some surprises all the way through - the secrets. However, the ending is totally unexpected! I was thrown for a loop by the revelation of who planned the abduction and why.
If you like a good mystery thriller with multiple unexpected events, you should definitely read this book!
📹Viral video fame at a hefty price - a thriller that I could not put down!😱😨😮😲 October 22, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍👍Wow! Author Stacy Claflin has produced another gripping thriller. Two teenage best friends, Atlas and Emmett, looking for internet fame, go missing and friends and family agonize over how and why they disappeared. The boys' parents are the main protagonists as they try to join the search for the boys and cope with the uncertainty and pain of their loss. Morgan, Atlas's father, has the hardest time, dealing with his overwrought wife Lila and a secret that could tear his marriage asunder. The reason for their disappearance is a total shocker. In their efforts to help the investigation, the parents learn their boys had secrets hidden to most, but are their secrets relevant to their disappearance?
Having never been through a similar experience myself, I can't say whether the varied reactions of the parents are realistic. But I can say that I could not stop reading as kidnapper suspects came and went and the boys remained missing. I was totally hooked and completely satisfied with the read and the conclusion.:-)
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
After reading the “Gone” trilogy by Stacy Claflin, I couldn’t wait to get on my hands on “Lies Never Sleep.” I thought I’d found another go-to author. Her trilogy haunted me long after I finished, and I was anxious to get possessed by this story too. I was surprised Claflin wasn’t more known by readers than she is. These were my thoughts as I opened the book to the first page and started reading…
When Emmett and Atlas break into an old, abandoned mental hospital, they have one goal. To create a video that goes viral on the anniversary of the mass murder that occurred there years before. Maybe they can summon a ghost. If nothing else, perhaps they can find a relic from the murders. Anything to go viral on the Internet. But when both boys are attacked and go missing, their family and friends race to find them, hoping they aren’t the latest to be killed at the abandoned hospital.
As with her “Gone” trilogy, Claflin introduces enough characters to enable you to see the story through different perspectives. You get to know both boys’ parents, Atlas’s siblings, and their good friend Brielle. However, the mothers both seem shallow, constantly worrying about their appearance. You don’t get to know any of the characters well enough to like them — or dislike them. You just simply wondered what the heck happened to the boys. Are they alive? Injured? Is this part of their plan to go viral? Who’s behind their disappearance?
It’s a good story that captured my attention despite places where the dialogue felt stilted or forced. I can overlook such things in favor of a tale that leaves me slack jawed long after I finish the book. “Lies Never Sleep” didn’t do that. In the absence of literary devices that make psychological thrillers my favorite genre (such as effective red herrings or unreliable narrators), the shocking twist I hoped for at the end just wasn’t there.
Ninety years to the day after a doctor at a local mental institution went crazy and killed his patients and staff in a gruesome rampage, two fame-seeking lads, Atlas and Emmett, decide to stage a 'Blair Witch'-type video investigation after dark and get more than they bargained for! When it's realised next day that both are missing, another friend, Brielle tells Atlas's parents and the police where they might be, leaving both sets of parents distraught. What's happened to the pals?
The plot goes round and round between the families, the two victims and the many red herrings and suspects and with more twists and turns than a sidewinder snake in a tumble-drier. While the action gets faster and faster, the reader's emotions are stretched taut, as if by fingernails screeching down a blackboard. Stacy Claflin expertly ramps up the tension between the characters and even throws in a homicidal client for Zion, (one of the fathers), that makes him realise how important family is. Can there possibly be an HEA for any/all the characters in Lies Never Sleep?
Get your copy as soon as you can - it's a haunting story that you won't forget in a hurry!
The premise of the story is the disappearance of two teens (Atlas and Emmett) after they break into a long-abandoned insane asylum that's allegedly haunted.
Atlas and Emmett are best friends determined to make a name for themselves no matter the cost. They enter the dilapidated mental hospital eager to find a ghost or relic that will become their claim to fame. Instead, they vanish without a trace.
As the search begins, accusations and secrets come to light. Somebody knows the truth, but no one’s talking.
I've read other books by this author so given the reviews, I was very excited to read this one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The dialogue was very stilted and gave the impression that it was written by a 15 year old. There are a lot of characters and I'm not entirely sure what they added.
At times it felt that this was more of a young adult book rather than a thriller/suspense. The cover says there's a twist you won't see coming but actually I did and it wasn't that shocking. To be honest there are too many things that annoyed me about this book to list them.
I originally wanted to rate this at either a 1 or a 2, but decided to just go with the middle. Very disappointed, as this is a far cry from the quality of story and writing that I have come to expect and appreciate from Stacy's other books. The premise started out fine, with the 2 high school friends disappearing after attempting to make a video at a supposedly haunted and long-abandoned mental institution on the anniversary of a mass killing there, that would make the boys famous. There's too many stops and starts, twists and turns in what quickly becomes a juvenile tale at best. I also had a hard time relating to all of the adult and authority figures, as they were all pretty much in the dark about anything and everything, plus as immature as the children. It's a fast read, though. I really like Stacy's other thrillers and mysteries, though, and will continue grabbing them as they go live.
I am amazed at the star ratings, they certainly run the gamut. I will give Ms Claflin her due, she doesn’t use every day names for her characters. 2 teenage boys, Emmett and Atlas, set out to make a video that will go viral by spending the night in a deserted Insane asylum. They don’t find ghosts but they do manage to get themselves kidnapped. Their best friend Brielle, thankfully stays home and works tirelessly to find them. Making posters, exposing teen age lies and confronting adults about their half truths. This is not a police procedure, it is a slow, torturous journey to the conclusion. There are scenes that change from one paragraph to another. Lies never sleep or maybe people have secret lives. You imagine that the lies must be earth shattering and then when it’s revealed, it’s like Really, REALLY? Endless chapters of people examining the lint in their navels. I feel cheated out of the lost hours slogging thru this book.
I got this book (thanks to Kindle Unlimited) because it sounded interesting. However, I was disappointed because it seemed like a YA novel plus the writing was so poor. I expected the book was written by a teenager. I was surprised the author apparently has received a lot of kudos on her writing. The dialogue was dull and repetitive and most of the characters were either wooden or typical stereotypes. The culprits at the end of the book were just not believable. The ending seemed so lame. Why did the "mastermind" wait years to take revenge? I think I have to be more careful choosing books, and read a variety of reviews: the 1-3 star ones because the 4-5 star reviews don't seem to be reliable.
The title already tells you something about this book. Initially, curiosity and the wish for fame drives the disappearance of two teen best friends. They think they're going on an adventure, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When they both go missing on their quest, the community is both alarmed and perplexed, However, this town has secrets that will unfold. A great read and one that will keep you up at night. The events that unfold will surprise you, as will the ending. Highly recommend! Please note that I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Atlas and Emmett have been inseparable for years. With their neighbor Brielle, they spend all their free time together. But when Atlas and Emmett go missing, it's Brielle who's the driving force behind discovering what happened to the two young men.
Unexpected secrets come to light, and some secrets are much more destructive than others. Will all the secrets be laid bare, or will others still linger in the dark?
Riveting! Twists and turns, wrapping around and around, with an explosive ending. Loved it!
This was an amazing read that had me hooked from the very first paragraph. I could not put it down until the very last word was read. It moves along at a great pace, which is neither too fast nor too slow, making it a comfortable reading speed. The characters are, wow, you cannot help but fall in love with them. No matter what you want to see them succeed. The story will not let you down. It grabs you and does not let you go. Once you are finished you are needing more. This is a must read, no doubt about it.
Emmett and Atlas high school best friends, want to make a viral video and decide to it in an abandoned insane asylum which is also haunted. While filming, both boys disappear which leads to the rest the of the story with family, friends, and the police trying to find them. The author keeps the reader in suspense as she built up to an ending that was unexpected. I look forward to reading more by this author.
The reason for the kidnappings is the real surprise. The characters all have unusual names which makes it interesting. I like how each character is defined to a point in their own chapter. The story line is well thought out with one silly error. When Brielle and Trevor are in the restaurant eating the waitress brings Trevor his food twice. I had a good laugh.
This story has so many layers and so many points of view. Here's the thing, it was so well written, everything was separated well enough nothing ever gets mixed up, or confused. It is clearly written and I had an idea only half of it figured out and just over half. The lies and secret that explode from this book it crazy amazing. I could not put it down. I had no idea of one thing till almost the end. This was definitely a great read. I don't like mysteries.
Just awful. poor writing, clunky dialogue, stupid plot. There are too many characters doing stupid and unbelievable things. Different characters narrate making it even choppier and more confusing. The big secrets are ridiculous. The doctor wants to keep something hidden but keeps records where his teenagers can snoop. The lawyer practices voodoo and hides it from his wife. Devoid of wit, mystery and suspense, it is a complete waste of time.
Emmett and Atlas have been best friends since childhood. Where you found one, you would find the other. Both of them just wanted to make a video and have it go viral. They never suspected that it would involve both of them getting kidnapped. The author Stacy Claflin has done a remarkable job with this book. Just when you think you've figured out who did it she throws you way out in left field! I encourage everyone who loves a good book to read this one!
The story is told by the different view points by the multiple characters. They are flawed, real, unlikeable at times. I really enjoyed this book and the twists and turns, lies and deceit amongst the characters. This book had me hooked from the very first page. By the time I read to the end, it was almost anticlimactic because the story wrapped up so quickly, which was a shame but still enjoyable nonetheless.
Atlas & Emmett disappear - so what happened to them? This is a story about secrets, lies, deception, families, friends - so much going on. I did like the various viewpoints and thought the author did a great job without repeating the same scenes. It was a book that keeps you engaged and makes you think.
I received this preview for an honest review. Two boys, Emmett and Atlas dream to go live on the 90th anniversary of a haunted asylum but instead they become famous for their video feeds of being kidnapped and missing. This was pretty suspenseful and I enjoyed it. I would have given a 5 star, but I had some lingering questions at the end, but overall it was great.
Atlas and Emmett are going to be viral with a video in a haunted asylum. But when they disappeared everybody tries to find them and them home. But in the process dark secrets from family and friends threatens to break all of them apart while trying to stick together in order to save Atalas and Emmet. Are they going to make it? An unexpected end.
