Sentenced to death for war crimes they didn’t commit, Captain Carson Sotelo and his team were given a choice: die in disgrace, or live as something entirely new. Several dozen procedures and a medically induced coma later, they awoke on a prison planet as super-soldier prototypes, spliced with genes from an extinct alien species.

Sotelo’s altered body comes with strange abilities and built-in weapons, and when Universal Authority tests him in the field, combat awakens violent instincts and cryptic genetic memories from the beast they installed in his genetic code. He’s able to keep the beast on a leash—until the day he meets Lilliana Malone, and his inner alien decides she’s his mate.

Though Sotelo resists the beast’s barbaric courtship style, he can’t pretend he doesn’t want Lilli. Her protective nature and fiery spirit remind him of why he went to war in the first place. Unfortunately, catching Sotelo’s eye also brings her to the attention of the ruthless team of scientists who turned his entire team into monsters…

Universal Authority had no idea what they were unleashing when they turned Sotelo into a weapon, and now that he has someone to fight for, he will bite off the hand that feeds them all, if that’s what it takes to get the team he leads and the woman he loves off the planet.

Escape de Emmy Chandler Serie The Project Vetus libro 1

Argumento:

In other Emmy Chandler's books, the story was in driver's seat but in Escape, it was locked in the trunk alone and barely surviving while romance (or erotica, smut—call it whatever you want) was having the best ride of their life.
On top of that, the hero was often presented as a dumb beast and the heroine was annoying.

2.5 STARS

A book with genetically altered soldiers, a male lead with alpha traits, romance and some sci-fi – yes please was the first thing I thought when I read the blurb, but whilst the premise of this book sounded great, its execution left a lot to be desired.

The male lead - Captain Carson Sotelo needed depth, he needed to be more than a guy controlled by his DNA and pheromones. Not too long after he meets Lilliana Malon (aka Lilli) Carson is positioned as somewhat of a brainless beast controlled by his urges. Carson was not the male lead I was hoping for.

Disappointed, skimmed a little in the middle, but there was potential, so may try one more book by the author.

Captain Carson Sotelo and his team were given a choice: die in disgrace, or live as something entirely new. Those 2 line had me craving to read Carson and his soldiers story. This sci-fi romance at its best. This book was non stop adventure and discovery. Lilli was a strong, caring leading female character. Both Carson and Lili connections to each other was explosive hot steamy. This book was awesome I definitely can't wait to read the next book in this new series

The only reason this is getting 2 stars instead of one is because the concept and science fiction parts were pretty cool. The other stuff, though, was mostly annoying.

I haven't read the Prison Planet books, but this one was fine to read as a standalone, even though characters from those books make appearances.

There’s problems, but still a good read

You’re scanning reviews and you want to know what the problems are. Ok. You got it. Some typographical issues, but we can forgive those. Some consent issues, but I’ll go into that later. Some just plain stupidity in the plot, and I’ll definitely tell you all about that. With those three combined, I give it a three star because I liked it enough to finish, and I might even think about reading the next one. On to more in-depth stuff! And

I came very close to stopping early on because too much very boring time was spent between Lilli and Sotelo explaining or demonstrating his “alterations”. These are details to slowly reveal in an action adventure romance not concentrated. It’s going to be a good series so I will just say this book is laying the foundation...unfortunately at the cost of their story.

I was excited to read the new spin-off to the prison planet series, Whilst you don’t need to read the previous series to understand this new story it would certainly be worthwhile to read the past stories in chronological order.

In Escape, we meet the main protagonists Captain Carson Sotelo and Lilliana. The connection between Carson and Lilli was undeniably steamy and sexy. The build in the relationship didn’t feel rushed and I felt that I was able to understand their character development from there from their first meeting all the way up to the final page. The dynamic of there relationship was explored in various detail and wasn’t just love at first sight, it explored the difference between lust and love. Which made their relationship feel real.

The world building was very good and in-depth especially the description of Carson’s homeworld and the facility that they were held in. Overall their storyline was in general very captivating and kept me on edge the whole way through. It is definitely a book I would recommend.

This has an omegaverse premise, if you've never read that genre it's like a werewolf book on steroids, with an Alpha male who claims his mate and she goes into heat etc. But here it has been tamed and turned way down, because Carson isn't really an beast/alien Alpha,, he's a human male and part of a six member elite soilder team who the big bad guys set up so they can use them in their experiments to create super-soilders, by splicing some alien DNA into them.

The splicing of an omegaverse like Alpha with a human male was interesting, how the author had the human male, named Carson, 'hear' the genetic echo of the Alpha/beast's instincts to 'claim his mate', but Carson, still having much of his human side left, pulls back on some of the more 'forceful' and 'dubious consent' insyicts and themes found in omegaverse Alpha/mate pairings. So, in this Carson, being human, knows he can't listen to his 'beast' too much, and just 'take her' simply her body responds to his Alpha pheromones and strength, he knows has to try to seduce her, the old fashioned human way.

But, it was a serious struggle to push through this. It was seriously boring for huge chunks. At the beginning for almost 20% of the book we're just reading about Carson wander around in a mindless, disease added state, unable to remember anything about who he I'd, or what he's supposed to be doing, and so mimdlessly sick and then remembering and then forgetting and then remembering then forgetting again. And it's seriously boring. 20% of the book!

Another problem is, these supposedly human/ super-soilders/alien hybrids/alpha/beasts do absolutely nothing to try to escape the lab/prison they're being held in for two years. They talk about how they want to escape, they think about how they want to escape, but they don't actually ever do anything to try to um... escape! They don't even think to look around their own prison for secret doors, or question if the wall openings their food and fresh clothing come from could lead them to somewhere else. Clearly that's the first thing any prisoner would do, let alone supposedly super enhanced, physically strong, intelligent soilders.

I read two books in the author's prison planet series, Guardian, which I gave 3 stars, and definitely enjoyed Ty the hero but disliked the heroine's tedious socio-ethical debates, and constant harping on the hero Ty, who was doing all he could to protect and care of her, she didn't deserve him, but the story was good. And Hunter, book 2, Maci's story, but although I think I also gave it 3 stars it wasn't as good as the first book and I was bored by it, to the point I had no interest in reading the next books in the series.

And that's the theme of this book and this review, it did nothing for me, an interesting glmmer of an idea without anything interesting to read happening. I liked the characters well enough, but well enough isn't good enough. They needed more depth. And I hated how she suddenly made Carson a big dopey Alpha. There needed to be more of everything, more story, more heat, more excitement. The writing wasn't bad, but there are words missing and wrong words used etc. So unfortunately this was just a blah story to read that didn't make me want to read anymore of the author's writing or books. No interest in reading the rest of the series.

I LOVED THE CONCEPT, IT'S LIKE A SCI-FI VERSION OF A TONE DOWN OMEGAVERSE STORY, JUST WITHOUT THE KNOTTING AND SLICK. IT'S VERY PRIMAL. THE ONLY PART OF THE STORY THAT ANNOYED ME WAS THE HEROINE.

CARSON caught my attention after his debut in the Prison Planet series, and I knew I just had to give it a shot after I just brushed this aside once. I'm glad I read it now. Carson's a byproduct of genetics splicing experimentation done upon his team of 6, and right now their powers are still being tested, while some are still dormant. As Captain, obviously he's responsible for his team. When he ends up crashing upon Zone Three, he encounters Lilli whom he immediately identifies as his mate. What I loved best about Carson's character is how analytical and literal he is...almost like a robot. It's fun to see him fumble around his own beastly instincts, to see how he copes with it like a shock through the system. Like I said, Carson's instincts resemble that of an alpha male in an omegaverse story, except this is purely sci-fi. Frankly, I felt almost sorry for him to have a troublesome mate like Lilli who keeps rejecting him. The poor man. At times like this, I'd wished the heroine was more malleable and submissive. But, I'm biased, since I already liked Carson before knowing his character...I just knew he would be what I often enjoy reading of.

LILLI's character differed from Chandler's other more likeable heroines in Prison Planet. From the moment Lilli meets Carson, while attracted, I lost track of the amount of times she said no or rejected his advances, doesn't matter if it's direct or indirect. I can't believe I'm saying this when I'm always complaining about insta-love troupes, but for this one, I wished Lilli was more susceptible to Carson. I mean, in the beginning it's fine but the more she pushes, then it just becomes annoying. The whole story circulates around him trying to woo her. After awhile, that gets old. What irked me about Lilli the most is the fact that when she was 18, she gave birth to a son who died in a car accident. After that, she doesn't want kids anymore, while Carson's entire background makes him eager to have a family. I'm not saying she's wrong, but she also wasn't right. I never understand how people can think that having another kid or pet means replacing the one who has passed away. For me, I never do. Everyone and every animal is different, and Lilli just kept denying that she wants another kid when deep down, she does. In the process, she just hurts herself and Carson. It was unnecessary. As much as I want to say she has every right...in the end she got pregnant anyway, and only then does she accept the situation. *eye roll* So she has to get accidentally knocked up to NOT make the conscious choice of having children? I'm sorry but I'm just going to be a bitch about that. It's fiction. I don't care.

OVERALL I rather loved the whole concept of this new project. ESCAPE features Lilli and Carson but it mainly hinges of procreation, since Carson and his male friends are forced to fuck their only female teammate every once a month in rotation. That part was kind of icky and rude how the scientists thought of them as nothing but animals. That being said, I can't wait for the rest to come out and hopefully meet better heroines along the way and more exciting plot lines!

A mash up

Really enjoyed this book and it definitely had some suspenseful edge of your seat moments who!e still having action romance and plenty of sci-fi type asoects. This books was kind of a mash up of old and new because we get some of the prison planet feels like from previous books but with a new twist that provides a great beginning for a new journey. This story was told I dual POV, with a pretty good balance between our hero and heroine so you get a very full and balanced feeling of what's going on, and there is so much going on. This story is full of emotion that are articulated well so you feel them while you read them. Carson is not and strong and loyal and you can truly see the conflict he and his beast go through. And lilli you see her face her own inner conflict with her self between kind and body. So while both of these characters have their own inner issues to deal with they also have to work together and deal with outside issues and any victory they have feels hard won. But in the end they get a happily for now and while most of the questions\problems are answered in still left with a few. So in reality I know I'd like another book or novella with Carson and lilli to answer those final questions I had for them as a couple but also as a sturdy transition into this new adventure that not just them but Zeta 8 as a whole are embarking on. And then after them I can't wait to see who Thiago falls for or how this knowledge they know have might affect the bonds of their team. So overall this was a great book with the beginnings of a good transition into a whole new world. It had plenty of action, suspense, mad science, sci-fi prison planet mashup feels so really a great transition to new beginnings, would recommend.

What?

Where do I even begin?

This book should be labeled as “how to write a zero consent romance but it’s all good ‘cause pheromones”.
This book was a hot mess. Seriously. The plot was all over the place. The characters were dull and a bit strange. Carson’s storyline was difficult to follow. He basically lolligaged his way through the “escapes”.
That zero consent tho.
Let’s discuss. **spoilers**
He’s constantly hurting himself and others to get to Lillie. Lying and becoming violent in order to get what he wants. Then emitting pheromones that make her need him uncontrollably. I get that he has alien dna spliced into him, but his character was horribly built in my opinion.
Lillie, knows he’s emitting these pheromones and continues to tell him no and to stop. Yet he keeps crossing those lines. And then when she finally does give it up, (which isn’t that far along) she says to herself “I’ll be mad/angry about it later” and then after she indulges in some pillow talk.
Personal opinion this wasn’t a good one. Sorry.

I couldn't believe when Carson turned over Lili to Dr. Brennan and made a deal so that the doctor would keep her at the lab. He should never have turned her over - even if he was concerned about her being unconscious. He knew what a monster the doctor was and the type of experiments that would likely be done to Lili. He knew she had a history of abuse with the UA. She would never willingly go back there. For a supposedly smart super soldier , that was a dumb ass move. He chose to turn her over to an evil doctor for selfish reasons ( so he could keep her) as opposed to giving her friends the chance to help her. Jerk!!!

In addition, he gets super excited about the ability to suddenly get her pregnant after curing her infertility. Doesn't he know the doctor will subject the baby to experimentation? Wtf?!?

Lili also forgives him immediately after seeing him for the first time after waking up in the lab. Knowing that she is going to get pregnant if she has sex, she does it anyway! She knows what type of company the UA is and what type of experiments they run. She knowingly gives them a new guinea pig! Selfish selfish selfish

He also continuously uses his pheromones and purring to make Lili compliant to his sexual needs . Not cool!

Even though the main characters pissed me off , I have to admit the book did hold my attention.

Plot? Who needs one of those.

This story picks up (after about 25%) where Traitor left off. Carson sees Lilli at the river and is immediately taken by her. After some trial and error on learning his new alien/beast capabilities, he finals gets Lilli separated from the Sorority to 'talk' to her. They spend a good 10% of the book just going back and forth about whether or not they should sleep together. Because of Carson's new genes, he feels an overwhelming sense to be with Lilli and he is battling his beast.

I thought this was an interesting plot but I found it exhausting that Carson spends so much of his time trying to convince Lilli to be with him. I kind of wish Lilli just made a decision and stuck with it. Eventually, he returns to his original plan to have him and his team escape from the lab.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this story. I thought it lacked some of the excitement from the Prison Planet books.

I am SO excited about this new series!
Lilli. I totally love this girl! The humorous way she says things is priceless! She’s feisty, protective, daring, and relentlessly drawn to this big, sexy, changeable man. I also love Carson’s connection to his alien side, even though its little more than pictures or thoughts in his head. He’s bossy, though: there is a lot of back-and-forth pulling for control between Carson and his inner alien.

There is so much going on in this story. Will they ever be free from experiments and labs? Thrills, frustration, hope, fear, and some very satisfying moments. Highly recommended reading!

Pretty good read.
We get to know the main characters. Carson & Lillie, while attraction is strong and pretty quick, Carson's struggle with his new skills, makes his pursuit of Lillie challenging. No real info on the outside world... but seems like money, fame & greed still rule a lot. There are interesting bits on Carson's home planet's society rules. Prisoners are sent off to planet prisons, treated like disposables.
How long was Lillie's sentence ... was she there for life or would she have been released? Nothing mentioned that I can recall. Seems like human rights doesn't really exist in this reality.
Want to read book 2 to see how it begins to unfold.

This new series are going to be sooo good! I started to fall in love with Emmy Chandler since her first book it was dark just the way I like it, but she has so many beautiful ideas that keeps surprising me. This news series makes my dreams come true! The ending left me craving more and more. I can't quote my favorite parts of the books without spoilers but the love story was different and with a not so special human hero that was strong and caring at the same time. Can't wait for the secondary characters stories. You need to start reading Emmy Chandlers books ASAP

Lilli and Carson

After reading all the Prison Planet books, it's great that Emmy has expanded the series into the promise of limitless adventure and a wide open world build, no longer bound to the Red Rock. These characters, with their undeniable affinity for one another, are off to the universe. I am so looking forward to this series. Emmy Chandler, I love your work and anxiously await the next.

Wow loved it

I read all of her prison planet stories and enjoyed them all, with the exception of the organ harvesting one ( it reminded me of the movie Coma😳😳😳). I find that stuff too creepy and I can see that horrible stuff happening. Nope, nope, nope. Lol. It was a good story as well but disturbing. I really liked this one about alien altered soldiers so I can’t wait for the next one. Great job, I highly recommended these books.

Grounded.

One of most authentic sounding reaction to new/unexplained biochemical mating attraction I’ve read (of 400+ paranormal romance) in my humble opinion. Though secondary characters adapted to captivity & surprise situations a little too well. It’s not high tempo action, but still quite a bit of violence, sex & gore...not so much with fluffy romance stuff, which wouldn’t be surprising to readers of the sister prison planet books.

Super good Twists

Emmy Chandler books are great! This one did not disappoint! So tell and Lilli were fire! I loved their banter and quick wit. As with the other prison planet books you find the main characters being unjustly imprisoned and surviving. But this series an added twist! Loved the story line and the world building! This is an excellent series and can't wait to read the next one!

I received this ARC for a honest review. Wow! This book was exciting.I sure hate that this is the second crew that has left the prison planet. Doesn’t any of them want to come back and get revenge on UA? Help the others get free? This new super solder is like the terminator 2000. I live the heroine and hero. I’m super stoked to see more from this series. I highly recommend.
