I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I chose the latter. Way cheaper. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write...except for that graffiti phase I went through as a teenager. Oops. Did I say that out loud?

I always enjoy a rekindled romance involving a woman who has a deceased abusive husband ( specific, I know.😂). The epilogue (since had nothing to do with the two MCs) seemed unnecessary, but that may just be me.

Oh my heavens! I started reading this last night thinking I'd only read a couple chapters. Ha! Hahaha! Hahahahaha! Silly me. I don't know why I always think that. Especially when it's a book from a favorite author written in a favorite genre. Let's just say that I read almost all of the book. It was that good.

I was instantly pulled into the world of Mrs. Arabella White. The emotions and imagery were very powerful. I ached for her. I cheered for her. She is a heroine that I adored and couldn't wait to see where her newfound strength took her.

Without giving away anything, I will tell you that she ends up in Nottingham as the majority shareholder of the Lace and Hose shop. She has no experience or understanding but feels that she must do this. When she comes face to face with the other owner, Edmund Archer, she is stopped dead in her tracks!

Bella and Edmund have a history together. Yet so much has happened in both their lives that they are different people than they were years before. They have both endured heartache and sorrow. They are both striving to be better and stronger than they were before. These two were very well written characters and ones that were easy to understand and cheer for in their endeavors.

If you are a fan of Victorian novels, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell (think North and South-*happy sigh*) you will enjoy this lovely read. This is definitely my favorite of the three books in the series. I've really enjoyed them all, but this one, hands down, is my favorite! Probably because I am a huge fan of North and South. Like, I watch the miniseries regularly. I think I have it memorized. So yes, I loved this book!

There are some secrets and surprises, struggles and suspense, bad guys and blind ladies, friends and foes, and many, many more wonderful aspects scattered throughout this lovely read! Definitely I highly recommend for any Michelle Griep fan, and for any who haven't yet read her works. You can read any of these books as stand alone novels. If you've read the books, we did get to see Mr. Barlow and a couple other minor characters in this one.

Content: Clean. Some mild moments of peril. Nothing more than a couple sweet kisses. This is a Christian fiction novel so the characters do mention God and have thoughts where they are talking to Him. Nothing preachy but well written. I felt it helped the story and flowed nicely with everything, as well as how the people living in that time would have acted and thought anyway.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shiloh Run Press, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Story Enjoyment Rating: 8.5/10 Christian Faith Rating 3/3

“The Old Lace Shop” by Michelle Griep is a Victorian-era Christmas romance novel with a touch of Charles Dickens’s influence. The story follows Bella, a recent widow who inherits her late husband’s business assets. Instead of selling everything, she keeps one asset and moves to a new town to become the majority shareholder in a lace mill. Upon arrival, she is surprised to discover that her business partner is an old flame named Edmund.

The novel delves into the complexities of second chances, forgiveness, and the challenges of Victorian life. The gritty portrayal of the mill town and the inclusion of characters with disabilities add depth to the narrative. Fans of “North and South” might appreciate the similar themes and atmosphere. Overall, I found “The Old Lace Shop” to be a heartwarming and enjoyable read with a strong Christian message of hope, restoration and the value of every person who God has created.

North & South meets Christmas in a second chance romance.

This was my second favorite out of the three novella collection, probably mostly because of its strong nods to North & South, which is one of my favorite Classics. This is a second chance romance but the way this one was how I like this trope to be written (i.e. NOT because the MCs decided not to communicate and run away from each other instead.) I liked Bella's character--despite her past trauma, she is always looking out to uplift others and demonstrates Christ's love and forgiveness quite well.

As mentioned before, this is the third and last book in a 3 part novella series. Unlike the other two, this story is written in first person, which was kind of jarring considering the other two were in third person. The epilogue seemed kind of superfluous to me since it wasn't about the MCs and was a tiny bit sad.

Just like in the other 2 novellas, Charles Dickens makes an appearance but this one is more personal to the MCs, which was fun. All in all, I did quite enjoy this story!

Content: past domestic violence, PTSD

Anticipation at opening the first page of this third Dickens Christmas novel The Old Lace Shop Once Upon a Dickens Christmas 3 Charming Christmas Tales Set in Victorian England by Michelle Griep with its appealing monthly progression from September to December and Second Chance coin...
I adore Michelle Griep's stories, characters, and suspense. The Old Lace Shop is no exception.
Romance and mystery keep a steady pace and my interest leading to a fully satisfying conclusion.

A delicious seasonal reading treat!

This one has definite nods to North & South, as well as Dickens, of course. I liked how Charles himself had a cameo appearance as Edmund's uncle.

Bella's late husband was very domineering and she's now enjoying the freedom that comes with being a widow.

Bella and Edmund knew each other before, but it's been a while, and their lives are now different. Edmund is not excited to see Bella as the majority partner and he hides a lot from her.
Bella wants to do good and improve the conditions of those she can.

I really liked how their relationship rekindled and how they developed a new friendship and then grows into something more.

The setting is right on, with all the social problems of the time.

An excellent read!

The Old Lace Shop is a sad reminder of the role women played in the Victorian Era. The author has created a fantastic tale following Bella White from her deceased husband's home to a different world. That of businesswoman in a world run by men. She must discover her place in the world while fighting the feelings that are being rekindled for a forgotten beau, Edmund Archer. This tale finds each needing a second chance at the life they were destined to live.

This is very well written and the inclusion of Charles Dickens adds a classic feel that will make this a favorite for many Christmas readings to come.

This was my favorite novella of the series. After becoming a widow whose husband was very abusive,
Arabella White and with no heirs, her husband's many properties become hers. She sells everything except his lace factory and moves to Nottingham. Little does she know that her only love, Edmund Archer, is managing the lace factory, and she is now a co-owner with him.

Bella is a very caring person and it shows in the way she reaches out to the elderly lace workers who have lost their sight and are reduced to begging. She also reaches out to Edmund's daughter, Flora, as she is crippled and Edmund has been very protective of her. Both Bella and Edmund grow in their faith and their determination as they work together to make the lace factory a growing and profitable concern even with spies and arsonists who are trying to put them out of business. With a HEA ending, and a twist of Dickens at the end, I want to see what happens next after the sweet epilogue.

Rating 3.5 stars.

Firstly, what I found strange with this specific novella in the collection, is that we suddenly went from third person perspective to first person perspective, which took some time getting used to.

I enjoyed this story more than the first, but not as much as the second. The "love tension" between Bella and Edmund made me wonder what or when things will develop between them which made me continue reading. The "traitor" angle was also interesting and I was quite surprised at the end. I loved Bella' generous and caring heart to those struggling and how she wanted to whatever she can to help them.

There were certain things which was overlooked/cleared up/accepted too quickly for me but otherwise an enjoyable read.

This is an amazing story, filled with romance, a little bit of intrigue, and a lot of what this season is all about: love and care for fellow human beings. I just loved every bit of this story, and know I will read again and again. AND having a bit of Dickens in the story just was frosting on the cake.

Read Review Rejoice's The Old Lace Shop by Michelle Griep: This darling story of second chances for a couple who were separated by Bella's father in his quest for power. I loved how Mrs. Griep was not afraid to tackle subjects that are even now still somewhat taboo. I highly recommend you try this novella out!

I'm so delighted to see the entire Dickens trilogy in one volume. I had already read books one and two, so in reviewing this title I added book three, The Old Lace Shop. It was every bit as good as the first two stories.
The crossover of characters from one book to the next continues, each book having a main character that appears as a side note in other stories, and the Second Chance Coin continues to change hands as characters pay its significance forward. I love how this symbol of faith winds its way through all the stories spreading the message of forgiveness, faith, and the opportunity for new beginnings.
This installment finds Bella White a free woman following the death of her abusive husband, and eager to make her own way. Bella has vowed never be dependent on a man again and never to let another man crush her under his heel. In a spur of the moment decision she decides to keep one of her late husband's business holdings and move to a small town as majority owner of a lace manufacturing company. Bella knows she will be challenged as a woman taking over majority ownership of a business in a man's world, but nothing prepares her for finding that her new business partner is an old love...
Bella tries to figure out the lace industry while Edmund struggles to figure out Bella and his mixed feelings for her. Amidst their conflicting feelings for each other, the two are faced with a struggling business, corporate espionage, family secrets, and a host of elderly ladies who are cast-offs of the lace-making business. Their faith in God is the only way they'll be able to sort it all out.
I love passing on Michelle Griep's stories as gifts to my family and friends. This book is a perfect Christmas gift because although the stories are all full-length stories, they each check in at around 150 pages, making them perfect to enjoy over a holiday break. Griep's stories are always sweet, clean romance, and although I usually tear up at some point, they are not Hallmark-y stories. I'm no a fan of Nicholas Sparks or tear-jerker romances, but I love Griep's sweet stories. A fellow reader described them well as passing on a message of faith in God and God's redemption without being "preachy". They could easily be a gift to a lover of historical fiction and sweet romance who needs a nudge in their faith. This is a great time of year to pick up this collection and enjoy them as fall approaches and through the holiday season.

Recently widowed Bella White spent almost a decade with a man who frightened and abused her. Now that he's gone, she's free to make her own path. Keeping one of the businesses her husband owned, Bella decides to help run the lace factory. Her business partner, though, who owns 49% of the business and is used to running it alone, is not so pleased. And since that partner is Edmund Archer, who was once Bella's beau, things are quite awkward when Bella arrives to help run the factory. And the lace manufacturing business is a lot more cut-throat than Bella expected.

After the disappointment of book #2 in this series, I was glad to be able to enjoy this one more. I applauded Bella's desire to earn her own money, rather than just live on what her husband left her. And her heart for local women who'd gone blind working in the lace factories was a really nice side plot. The overall story was decent, if not a little too cluttered for a short novel.

Right off the bat, it was strange going into this book after reading the first two in the series, because they were both told in 3rd person past tense, while this one is in 1st person present tense. This is an odd choice for a book with alternating POVs, and I'll admit to being a little confused a few times when I'd forget whose perspective we were in at the time. Also, there's more pressure to make sure both characters' voices are unique, since they're obviously not the exact same person, and that wasn't necessarily done well enough here. It didn't help that I listened to the audiobook though, which I've now decided to avoid for romances if at all possible. And that may have been why the romance in this story felt a little weak, or it may have been the story itself, but I don't think I can say for sure.

The epilogue of this story was about the 2nd-chance coin that shows up in all 3 books. This is a shame, because I wasn't as connected to that coin as I could have been, and so the epilogue mostly fell flat for me. Be that as it may, I still liked the story in general, and I do recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick Christmas read, or for a historical and/or Christian romance.

As with any of Ms. Griep’s books, I stepped back into a bygone era, the customs foreign, the sights unfamiliar, the smells jarring.
Oh, how I admired Bella! Such spunk, such tenacity. Bearing her wounds as a badge of courage.
Edmund bearing up under guilt, and obligation. Facing his opponents with determination.
The clash when the two meet.
I was struck with the disparate approach Bella and Edmund took to difficult circumstances. Once freed, Bella took on the world, while Edmund retreated from all but his obligations, both personal and business.
As iron sharpens iron, Bella’s enthusiasm softened Edmund’s rough edges, and those same rough edges tempered Bella’s naïve impulsiveness.
The secret of the past was an unexpected twist, and it notched up the tension as it tumbled from its hiding place.
As always, Ms. Griep gives the reader authentic characters with interesting circumstances. Characters who captivate the reader, and fill the pages with love and angst, hope and regret. Characters who compel the reader to keep reading.

The Old Lace Shop is the third charming Christmas tale in Michelle Griep's Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series and I loved it. Another winner from one of my favorite authors. It continues the story of the second chance coin from the first two stories that are also set in Victorian England. The author does a great job of bringing this era to life with descriptive writing that puts the readers right into the scene and wonderfully vibrant characters. Bella and Edmund are both scarred by unhappy marriages and inadvertently find themselves as co-owners of a lace factory. How's that going to work out considering they have a heartbreaking history? Along with the two main characters, readers will find other interesting characters, a sweet special needs daughter, five blind women, and of course, the villain! And just who is the person bent on destroying the business? Griep keeps the reader wondering til the exciting climactic ending just who the underhanded scoundrel is. There is a definite thread of faith in God woven throughout the story, which reminds readers that He is a God who loves to give His children second chances. I have a sad feeling this might be the end of the series but one can only hope for more to come.

I LOVE the liveliness and immediacy of this story, told vividly in first person. And the theme of second chances always grabs my heart! Bella and Edmund once shared a chaste first love before the cruel realities of life and family obligations separated them. Now both widowed and bound by an unusual business partnership, they each struggle with passions resurrected and the proprieties of Victorian England. I was intrigued by the historical details of the lace industry, and how this valuable but fragile commodity seemed a perfect metaphor for the love and friendship between Edmund and Bella. The characters of Hester and Flora, along with a TOTALLY unexpected epilogue really fleshed out the truth of life in England during Dickens' time for me. I found myself rereading sections over again, just to relish their flavor. I love that faith plays a natural and powerful role in the lives of Griep's characters. One of Bella's most memorable lines found its way to my journal: "Either your faith will move mountains, or your doubt will create them."

Grab this poignant third tale in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas and see why Michelle Griep is such a favorite of mine. Perfect reading any time of year, not just ast Christmas. Sigh.

Enjoy this story of second chances, as you follow Bella White and Edmund Archer in an ill-advised partnership in a lace factory. Both are widowers, still licking their wounds from rather turbulent marriages and definitely struggling with life in general. The roasted Christmas goose dinner scene was my favorite, and I think the author did a fine job of describing a Victorian Christmas feast. The blind ladies and a sweet young girl add a delightful twist to the tale. The story wraps up quite quickly in the last chapter and the Epilogue with plenty of pleasant surprises and a reunion. It was also quite appealing to have Charles Dickens play a cameo as himself in the story.

Note: I read this as part of Once Upon a Dickens Christmas. The first two novellas were previously published as separate books. The Old lace Shop is brand new. Be sure and read the historical notes, as the author has some interesting tidbits to offer on Christmas and Victorian England.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher, I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Lovely holiday story, which I was swept away in. Bella, now widowed, has escaped from an abusive marriage, due to her husband's merciful death. He can harm her no longer. As she pieces together a new life for herself, she decides to keep ownership of one of his business endeavors, Nottingham Lace and Hose. What a shocking decision for a British woman of 1855! Her business partner is especially flabbergasted at the change of hands. (Although to his credit, he takes Bella under his wing.) It helps -- or perhaps distracts -- these co-owners, seeing as how once upon a previous time, they were an couple... Will sparks fly yet again?

The timeline of the plot is categorized monthly, from September to December. This is something fresh, something you don't see in every novel. I liked it! Plus, it gave our heroine and hero enough time to truly get to know each other -- working at the factory every day together.

"November is a melancholy month, the gloomy space between summer past and Christmas future."

Michelle Griep is a wonderful writer. I thoroughly enjoyed all the books in her Once Upon a Dickens Christmas collection.

Love this quote! (so meaningful and true!):

‘Either your faith will move mountains, or your doubt will create them.’

The author has done it again! A lovely book set in London and Nottingham in 1855. Mrs. Bella White has experienced the ugly side of marriage and has somewhat gratefully seen her husband laid to rest. What it has done for her is to give her a second chance at life and perhaps even love. Selling all but the Nottingham Lace and Hose company she leaves that unhappy life behind, totally unaware of what lies ahead.

I loved the courage, faith and love displayed by Bella. Would that we were all so generous with our time, money if available and caring for those less fortunate than ourselves. Her second change brought unexpected blessings which benefited those around her. Perhaps we all need to avail ourselves of that second chance!

I received this book through NetGalley and Barbour Publishing. The impressions, opinions and five star rating are my own.

The third in this series based in Victorian England around Christmas time. All the stories are different although they are connected by some characters and a "second chance coin." In this one, we find Bella, a young widow, who is happy to finally be out from under her dominating and abusive husband. She wants to be her own woman and so, decides to keep one of his business holdings and finds herself majority owner of the Nottingham Lace & Hose. When she travels there, she is confronted by the other owner, Edmund, an old love. In Bella, we find an incredibly resilient and good young woman. One thing I didn't like, though, is why authors often make their female characters a bit on the impulsive and immature side. Edmund is a good man although worn down and preoccupied by trying to make the business survive while taking care of his disabled young daughter while also keeping her existence a secret. No sex or profanity and a nice Christian message.

I think this might have been my favourite of the 3 books from this series. I liked that this was told in first person narrative from the perspectives of both the protagonists. I loved Bella, and her faith . . . she had experienced untold horrors at the hands of her late husband, but she clung tenaciously to her faith in God, *knowing* that He would provide a way for her to accomplish what He asked of her. I also liked Edmund . . . how he was determined to do the right thing, even if he did get in his own way at times. (I loved what Bella told Edmund . . . that faith in God could move mountains, or that doubt could create them.)
There were definitely hints of Gaskill's 'North and South' about this book, and I loved the 'cameo' by Charles Dickens, himself.

Main Characters:
Bella White: Abused widow now left inheritance
Edmund Archer: Co-owner of a struggling lace up shop

Bella had been abused by her husband. Upon his passing, she was left at home, and several businesses. But the only thing she really wanted to do was be independent and make something of herself. With 51% of the holding shares Bella decided to be a part Nottingham Lace and Hose.

Who she finds when she arrives was an utter surprise, and not necessarily a good one.

This was a fairly good story. God was most definitely a big part of the characters' lives.

Although the narrator read very well, and had plenty of expression, I felt it was a bit much. I’m not fond of melodramatic narration. If I had the written book, I would’ve read it.

Anyway, sweet little story.

I waited too long to write this review after finishing The Old Lace Shop, so the details aren’t as fresh in my mind.

That said, I truly enjoyed this story. The characters had wonderful depth and complexity, making them feel very real. Initially, I was frustrated with Bella’s inability to listen and trust Edmund, but I was overly critical. Her past understandably shaped her newfound independence and courage to make decisions she believed were right. Edmund, on the other hand, continues doing what he’s always done, protecting the business and his family, even when it risks upsetting Bella. The resulting drama is resolved with refreshing maturity and comfort, which I appreciated.

The story also includes a touch of suspense, keeping me guessing about the antagonist. That element of mystery added to the fun and intrigue.

As with all books by Michelle Griep that feature narration by Nan McNamara, the storytelling was excellent—entertaining, engaging, and easy on the ears.

This was the last book in this series (I think, although after reading the epilogue I was sure there was another one but I can't find any mention of it on Goodreads). There were again just brief mentions of characters from the previous books, I would have liked to have seen more of that. I found this one to be a bit sad as widowed Bella suffered so much abuse from her previous husband. I also found all the blind begging women to be incredibly sad. My enjoyment of these books seems to be trending downward with the first one being my favorite.
This one was fairly clean although there are brief mentions of domestic violence.

You will admire Mrs. Bella White who late husband was abusive. On his death, Bella determines to never be dependant on a man again! Thankfully she is now a wealthy woman and Bella decides to be an active partner in one of the businesses left to her! Imagine Edmund Archer's shock when Bella shows up at the lace factory ready learn the business! Bella has many ideas about changes to the factory! Read in the Once Upon a Dickens Christmas volume. I really wanted to love this story, but I think I may only have liked it. Perhaps it can be blamed on editing, but many moments of the development of Bella and Edmund's relationship were left out in a way that just seemed like it didn't make the cutting floor. Otherwise, the story seems thoroughly researched and woven intriguingly. Plus, the epilogue is PERFECTION. Is this the last in the series?

The Old Lace Shop: My second favorite of the three, The Old Lace Shop truly is a tale of second chances as everyone in it is in need of a second or even a third chance. I couldn't help but like the main characters, they've both been deeply hurt but they try so hard to rely on their faith to get them through. Toss in some suspense and you get quite the Christmas adventure!

This series made for an enjoyable Christmas read. All three books use the theme of extending second chances, which is one of the truest Christmas gifts we can offer those we love. It was also fun to see how the author brought Charles Dickens into each story. Cozy and charming. I liked all three. Listened to the audio. Michelle Griep has a special ability to create characters you want to know in person, want as a neighbor or best friend. Mrs. Arabella White is one of my all time favorite characters. She overcomes so much in her young life. I was pulled into her world and found myself constantly pulling for her. This lovely novella for me is a must read.
