Marked for Death Valor thought he would have a chance to start over back on Earth. A chance to savor all the advantages that leveling up in a world full of futuristic technology and ancient magic has given him. But fate has other plans. A tactical strike is initiated, a neighborhood obliterated. Val fears his enemies have discovered his terrible secret, and have marked him for death on both worlds. Even after escaping back to the realm of Endless, hidden foes attack without mercy. The death of Overlord Tytus has sent shock waves through all of Jordia as countless Highlords make their bid for the throne. Now Val finds himself facing off against treacherous nobles, cold-blooded assassins, and mad tyrants bent on conquest. If Val and his friends are to have any hope of surviving, he must dare the unthinkable. He must declare himself a contender, face off against an entire world's worth of opponents, and claim the throne for himself! Join Val once more as he discovers hidden classes, embraces forbidden arts, and takes the first steps along a path of power that will change the face of Jordia (and Earth) forever!
This is so hectic and exciting. Val works so hard to build alliances and then BAM he's cursed and those who oppose him get possessed and won't stop fighting him and his peeps until they're all dead. No surrendering.
I have loved the series so far, I’m really into the story and was even ok with the crappy amnesia idea for book 3. However the author is dropping story cues left and right that the series is turning the MC into an overpowered Harem owner. Please stop that BS, be more original than trying to have yet another female character with no personality sleep with your hero. Make new female characters that are great in there own right which don’t have a romantic involvement with the hero.
I know this review will change nothing but if one more character is introduced that “instantly” loves the MC I’m gonna lose my F-ing mind and will drop this series. Its ridiculous and make for poor story telling.
I liked the action and adventure of this book, but disliked the increased focus on poly-amorous/harem relationships. I'm fine with a little romance, but this took up a way larger portion of the book, and harems are a trope I could definitely do without no matter how it's "justified"/explained by the game/other world.
The series went off the rails a bit in this instalment. The story was the dullest and least interesting of the series so far and there was a lot of harem nonsense and general misogyny to be had.
I think I’ll exit the series at this point as the bad now outweighs the good and it was honestly a bit of a struggle to make it to the end of this book. Pity as this LitRPG definitely had potential. Unfortunately, like a lot of LitRPGs, it has grown worse as the series progresses to the point where I end up pulling the plug on the series. This seems a bigger issue in the LitRPG genre than any other genre I’ve ever read!
Rating: 2 stars.
Audio Note: This was narrated by Wayne Mitchell who did an OK job with the audio. He got support from Lisa Aust for the female dialogue. I thought that worked quite well for the audio production.
The author finally gave in to the stupid harem litrpg trope
I guess I need to confirm this with twenty additional words but the whole harem thing got really bad, and pointlessly so plot wise in this book. The rambling descriptions of each previous book were rife through this version and matched with a wandering pace of plot development.
It's getting worse, not better. Everything just magically comes together, the main character is soooo stupendous, and girls fall all over themselves...
At least some of the unnecessary exposition is trimmed back, but still not enough.
The only way I'd continue the series is if there's a set ending planned out in the next book or two. But this is starting to feel like another endless series
Cliff notes. Does it have a hareem, check. Val almost killed by horrendous battle wounds multiple times, check. Does Val run off and and do stupid things, yep. Does he immediately say he shouldn’t do that after winning by learning some impossibly awesome trick, yep. Annoying repetitive dialog how he won’t let his Hareem girls die, check. Even more annoying repetitive dialogue about how he should be better and treat his hareem girls with kindness and love. More repeat battles where name changes and the death scenes-change but really it’s all the same, hell yeh.
How many times can someone be on the verge of death and just miraculously survive against impossible odds. The main character in the story does it over and over and over. Basically to the point of ridiculousness. It got to the point where I just kept wanting to say “get on with it” we know he’s going to survive. There comes a point where this miraculous survival just becomes comedy. Plus the main character has gotten so good in his primary ability that the author has to constantly think of new ways to disable his primary ability in order to basically try to kill the main character. Plus how many times can you threaten to kill his girlfriend just to bring him in to a new death situation. The other end of this book was just ridiculous and does not inspire me to want to read the next book at all. It’s kind of sad to see such a great writer feel compelled to constantly ramp up the action and the danger to the point where it’s ridiculous in the story.
The more of these books I read, the more I am pulled into this universe. And, I love the ‘universe’s’ comments to Val! Lol
Not only am I looking forward to the next book, I hope there are spin off series as well by M.H. Johnson and other authors too. For instance: what is the story past and future for the one ‘enemy’ Terran left on the field of battle at the end of this book? What is happening back on Earth during the transition post the corporate takeover of the planet? ..with the dwarves? ...with the elves? :-D
A fab read that flys along at a rate of knots even if at times it can be a bit academic in its prose. I loved it and Bethany ;) so cant wait for the next in the series.
It feels like there will be several more and I do hope so. MC is well written and the support cast have plenty off likeable characters.
Plenty of plot and loads of battles, gore and levelling what more can you ask for....
How often can an author use and misuse the word bemused? It seemed like almost every other page and it started to annoy me. Not everyone has a bemused smile at all times. To the author, Please look up the definition of a word if you are unsure of its meaning. I doubt you meant for all of your characters to constantly be puzzled or confused. Otherwise the story was fantastic!
This story is action from the word go! It was good to see that as overpowered the MC was, he did not avoid errors, injuries or traps. Wanted more about Ava and Julia's was a bit of a whinger, but hopefully will be more accepting of new situations. Cannot wait until the next one! Minor editing errors.
Picks up the sentence after the last book, like all of his books seem to hah. Fantastic from start to finish. Lots of action, more development and some explanations for some of the tech differences. I really liked how the author accounts for why some things don't work, and others work better.
Oblivion's Peril was a fun adventure story. I had a difficult time remembering all of the characters in the story. It was nice that they were all in one place now. I liked the hoverbike Valor was riding. I feel the harem genre has been added to this series with this book.
I like the progression and I look forward to reading the next story.
This book was really good. I love the introduction of a few of these characters. Also it is kind of funny how he goes to see if he can get mercs and he gets three ladies instead although I was expecting him to kill the flesh trader dude. Also whats with the councils favorite why is that dude so dumb. I mean dude asks you about your forces and you tell him. Seriously....
The force is strong in this young one. I am surprised as to how lazily many of the lore has been appropriated by the author. Be it star wars or bourne series etc. Action stays pretty much non stop, only this time around the women are throwing themselves at our hapless mc feet. Hope the series takes a better turn with less distractions.
This is the fourth book in a great series that picks up right where book 3 ended. Valor is an interesting main character that I can’t wait to see what he does next.
A very good continuation of a very good story. Some slight typos but a great read I couldn't put it down even knowing I had to get to sleep early in the morning a must read.
I'd like to say this is the best book in the series so far but truth is all of them have been equally as good! I loved every minute of it! I am so looking forward to the next!!!!!
What can I say except wow. Things are really heating up fast in this episode. Val has to step it up and quick as the forces against him move quickly. Val power and knowledge grow as he seems to not only survive but thrive and conquer. Can't wait for the next book.
Another exciting installment of this series, this is extremely well written and is a cut above the rest in this form of LitRPG. Has plenty of action and good charachter development.
This book takes off and never lets up in a great story. Lots of action and constant development as Val takes a strong leadership role. There are some harem elements added but I liked all of the new cast and each had a good story and plot introduction.
I like this series and the characters. The book is very interesting and keeps you entertained. The only down side is the repeating dialogues. Everything else about this book is great.
I really enjoyed this book. As the fourth in a series, it lived up to the quality and enjoyment I had received from the first 3 books. I would recommend d this series to anyone who is willing to be enlightened and entertained.
M.H. Johnson takes us back to his Endless Online Universe with Oblivion's Peril, the fourth book in the series. Rollicking Good Stuff! Really enjoy this series and I'm about to dive into book five!
The ends never justify the means, especially in a game. This part of the story has the hero purposely killing innocents, in order to accumulate enough city building points to save his city, when he had perfectly good enemies he needed to take out.
Such a great book for thanks Johnson for writing such an epic series so far read every book you've written. I really enjoy your writing style and your characters are the Silver Fox books I'm looking forward to the next time you publish one of those.
Oh and this one was amazing too. Couldn’t put it down. Two nights of insomnia and frantic breaks at work reading all I could. Thanks buddy. This book was awesome. Time for book 5!!!
The game or race to rule is on, with increasing stakes the battles, level ups and danger making this such an engaging read I have become really invested in this series as the fight for the human races freedom.
