I’m coming after Kreedence. I want him to know what it feels like to live in fear. Just as I did for so many years.
Three dragon shifters and a hellhound should be more than enough help. And yet, I’m seeking out allies in all the wrong places: a prince with resources, a deadly king with power, and a mysterious queen who died decades ago.
New secrets will come to light. They’ll destroy everything I thought I knew about myself and the world around me.
Our secrets will always haunt us.
Or hunt us.
This is a Reverse Harem series containing M/M themes. Recommended for readers 18 and over.
A.K. Koonce is a USA Today best selling author. She's a mom by day and a fantasy and paranormal romance author by night. She keeps the fantastical stories in her mind on an endless loop, while she tries her best to focus on her actual life and not that of the spectacular but demanding fictional characters who always fill her thoughts
TBH, awfully bold of Koonce to release this book A DAY BEFORE PAIN (Curse of the Gods) IS RELEASED. Lady balls, aye? Good on her.
I saw the two release dates and in a hurried manner, read through like 60% of the book on the release date and then clicked PAUSE so I could read Pain on its release date.
And then it took me like 5 days to read Pain. And then I went back to reading this book.
Surprisingly I didn’t forget much of the first half.
All I can say is: Rime. UGH. Rime. He was my favorite in this book. I can’t get enough. I NEED MORE MORE MORE.
The came way earlier than I thought it would. But as hinted in the final pages, a new foe is to arrive. And she’s now supposed to build ships for the Prince.
SO MANY NEW TURNS! Where will book 3 go? Will there be a fourth book? I’m not so sure book 3 can tie up everything... or can it?
I have no fucking clue. Predictions are now being burned in a trashcan as we speak. I was off. What a pleasant surprise.
I certainly need more Chaos + Rime action. Hell to the yes.
I HAVE QUESTIONS, KOONCE. Email me. Xoxo (Jk don’t email me, just work on the third book. I need that shit ASAP)
I adored book 1, but this one went a step in the wrong direction for me. It wasn’t as well written, and I didn’t like the MC as much. One of the things I loved about the first book was that all of the main characters were fairly awful, but that was toned down a good bit in this one.
I don’t remember having any issues with the writing in book 1, but some issues distracted me a few times in this one. I thought the first chapter had a pretty big misstep because it was just titled “Kreedence,” so I thought he was narrating that chapter. I was confused for a few pages before I realized what happened, and then I had to restart the book. This book also had some typos and instances of using the wrong words (e.g., “through” instead of “thought”).
Now on to the characters! I was really upset by the direction that Aria’s character went in this book, though I sort of get why it happened. In book 1, Aria was selfish and greedy. And I loved it. In this book, she spends most of her time worrying about other people and feeling guilty for her past behavior. She talks about how what she did was not ok, even if it was for her survival, and she says she’s a better person now that she has friends who will back her up. Ugh. In my review of book 1 (link with rating below), I talked about how I couldn’t blame her for her doing what she did to survive, so I guess that this is the natural progression now that she doesn’t need to do everything on her own. However, I think the change happened a bit suddenly and shouldn’t have been so complete. I would have liked it better if it had taken her awhile to realize that she could afford to be nice now and if she had still been nice only to her guys after coming to that realization. Instead, she even tries to be a better friend to the prince, which I thought was unnecessary. In particular, I didn’t like that she apologized to the guys for her behavior because they certainly never felt the need to apologize for any of the obnoxious things they do. I felt a bit better when Rime responded to her apology for being selfish by telling her that selfishness is ok sometimes, but I still hated that she apologized in the first place because I think it introduced some inequality to her relationship with the guys. It felt like it was reinforcing the societal norm that women must be kind and ladylike whereas men can act however they want. Anyway. This isn’t anything new, but almost every man in this book wants her. This book is actually better about it than book 1 because now we have one (1) man who doesn’t want her, but the issue stood out to me more in this book for some reason. I’m glad she didn’t try to add the prince to her harem, and I hope he stays out of it. One thing I liked is that her kiss trauma doesn’t magically disappear when she realizes that Sinister is actually fine because the mind doesn’t work like that.
The book still made me laugh, though. In fact, Aria’s ability to make me laugh is probably the only thing keeping me from calling her a Mary Sue at this point. I loved the following bit: “They’re a bag of dicks when they team up together. ‘You three fucks asked the one person you were hunting to help you hunt her. Let’s not act like you’re some all-knowing worldly female orgasm connoisseurs.’ ‘Damn, I do like that title.’ Chaos looks at Kain and they both nod to one another as if it’s settled. I bet, in their minds they’ve already ordered Female Orgasm Connoisseur’s plaques and commemorative merchandise. Tee shirts, banners, underwear. All of it.” Come on, that’s just gold. I also loved everything about the scene in which Chaos and Aria competed to make each other more uncomfortable than the other while having dinner with the king. I especially loved that, even after Chaos ran away from the dinner table with an erection, Aria referred to Rime as the most disobedient dinner guest.
As for the guys, they weren’t quite the same as they were in book 1 either. For one thing, they’re apparently actually wyverns? I don’t remember (at all) the author describing them as having only two legs. Also, the guys weren’t as obnoxious to Aria as they were in book 1, but I wish they had kept picking on her a bit more (only if she picks back, obviously). Still, they stayed the same in other ways. For example, they were all still good about consent, except in one scene in which Chaos asked whether she’d ever done “this” before without explaining what it was or asking if she wanted to do it. The author is usually pretty good about this stuff, so I think she may have just gotten ahead of herself there. Their personalities are pretty much the same as they were in book 1 as well. Kain had me swooning after Aria made a jab at him about having goodbye sex with the prince: “If you really want goodbye sex, just let me know . . . It’ll be an introduction like you’ve never felt, and it’ll happen over and over and over again . . . If I ever figure out how to say goodbye to you, that is.” And Chaos is very much still my baby. Everything about the circumstances of his first kiss with Aria was perfect for them, and I adored him in the following bit: “He meets my tense gaze, peers down at the bacon sandwich, and meets my eyes once more. Slowly he steals a single grape out of the bowl at the center of the table and adds it to his plate full of meat. He nods to the little purple grape as if he’s pleased with himself and his good choices in life.” I think of him as a puppy a little bit tbh, and he’s just the best boy. And Rime is still a peach: “One minute he looks like he’d risk his life for me and the next he looks like he’d sacrifice me to the goddess just for the promise of fair weather.” Those are some of my favorite relationships, tbh (hello Heir of Fire).
I’m also still completely obsessed with the relationship between Chaos and Rime. Aria describes them as puppies who only know how to show affection through fighting, and that about sums it up. Except when it doesn’t (*evil laugh*). My heart melted for Chaos even more than it already had (that was possible?!) in the following bit, when Chaos says, “‘We’re friends. We’ve been friends for years. I’d never screw that up. He’s important to me and he’ll never admit it, but I know we’re important to him. I wouldn’t fuck that up for all of us.’ ‘But he kissed you.’ A big smile takes over his whole face like I’m not the first person to over analyze that Rime kissed him.” Gaaaaaaaahhhhh! And then my heart melted for Kain because he sat there and gave Chaos a pep talk about Rime. Sometimes the other guys in the harem don’t really know what to make of the mm bits among the other guys (like in the Groupie series), so I really love that one of Chaos’s oldest friends supported him in this. One thing that I didn't like is the way that Rime bonded with Aria. It kind of seemed like he was saying that he wouldn't want to be with her without Chaos, but I'm choosing to interpret it as it being more a case of him not being able to choose between them and thus not wanting to be with her if he had to choose. Well, that's still a choice, I guess, but that distinction makes me feel better somehow.
But then there’s Sinister. I don’t really know what to do with him, tbh. He has his moments that make me smirk, but he hasn’t really added anything to this harem for me yet, at least not on the scale that the other guys have. I also don’t like that we never really get an explanation for how he could suddenly access his humanoid form.
This book had a bit of a cliffhanger but not as much of one as book 1 had. I’m honestly not sure what to make of the ending, tbh, but it seems like something I could easily dislike if the author doesn’t handle it right. I hate plot points that come out of nowhere. Laying the groundwork is important! For example, I loved that the author laid the groundwork for this book’s major plot point of the quail in book 1.
PROGRESS UPDATES 9% I’m grabbing the popcorn already: “I’ll have you know you were my favorite.” “Your favorite? Really? Tell me what sweet things you did for your favorite fucktile.”
67% “All the pushing and pulling of our personalities doesn’t change the fact that our emotions drag us right back to one another. Always.” 😍😍😍
75% Omfg 😢😍 “No one knows more about what love feels like, than Chaos and Rime. And they don’t even realize it.”
book 1 was all over the place but the fast pacedness of it (midst me not being able to find anything interesting past the first 5chap) made up for it. it doesnt change the fact that the plot sucked ass however. nothing happened there and nothing did here either. only diff is first book was like a new shiny toy for me and this, is not
I don’t think this series benefits from being broken into several short novella-length books. It looses pace and the intrigue/interest wanes.
I took about a week break between book 1 and 2, and found that Arlow had suddenly gotten uninteresting. As others have pointed out, she became self-conscious about her actions and insecure in her sense of self. I think this could have been used in a more interesting way to show her development as a character, but it wasn’t. Her magical abilities manifested out of nowhere (she always had them But they just got a lot stronger) and her relationship with the guys also somewhat randomly cemented itself. Everything felt a little rushed and under-described, which was also an issue in the first book for me. I was hopeful it would be remedied with this one, but as it stands I feel like I only have the barest mental picture of this “world” and it’s conflicts.
He's coming! He's here! Our unlikely heroine is just trying to survive... and it's hard to do with 3 sexy dragon shifters and her exes cursed brother, thought dead but actually was just trapped in his hell hound shift.
A mix of lies, funny banter, burning hot smut, FMF at the same time people!, and dark retelling of past abuse as well as the dreaded EX! All meld into book 2. Making me realise this is not the main plot. There is more to this story.
The smex was okay, I mean, it was very inventive, but something was lacking, making it hot in words but lacking in substance.
But the stars I give are because I already love these characters, even the annoying, or asshole ones. I am invested and reading onwards because I enjoy their dynamic and want to see how it all develops. That is a good read.
Awww Bobble ❤️...I kinda want a soft toy Bobble now 🤷🏿♀️
I was recommending Dragon shifter RH books today and the first book in this series is one I thought of right away. I was pleasantly surprised to see the second book was available already. Now to say the only negative thing I have to say about this book then I can move on to the things I liked about it. I was disappointed that the book seems so short, I was really hoping to get more I formation about the magic world this story is written in. Now having said that I did still enjoy the book and that the authors adds in New unique creatures to each book. The romance heats up in this book, and there is a lot more character development. I still would have liked a little more story it left me feeling like I was reading it to quickly which I sometimes do. I'm planning on going back and reading both books together to fix this, plus the story is interesting enough that I want to.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
I have to say this book took some intriguing twists as well follow Arlow and her dragon shifters. Agatha is still being held prisoner making it necessary for them to search for allies in some interesting places whether they want to or not. Once things get moving we take another turn as we enter another world in their search for answers. Good world building with some strong characters. Great for fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Arlow faces Kreedence and it doesn't go well. Kreedence is a douche but he is powerful. I question how powerful he is though. There are a couple of parts in the book that don't make sense, especially at the end. Even so, I am enjoying this series and how Arlow and the men are getting along.
This is just full of nothing. The plot is nonexistent, the character development sucks, the writing is makes no sense. It’s all just a confusing book of nothing. The Sinister reveal was so anticlimactic. They just NEVER address the fact that he was living as a dog for 5 fucking years????????? It made no sense????? They just move on like nothing happened.
It is 3 in the morning. I made bad sleep choices to read book 2 of this series and now I am forced to continue the trend and start book 3. Because this series is amazing. So so so well written!
I love Rime he’s the perfect foil and feels more like a leader of the trio. I liked the continuation with the addition of Sinister. Looking forward to reading the next one.
This one upped the ante from book 1 in terms of action and suspense! I liked seeing more growth between Arlow and her dragons, loved the way they slowly fell in love and became MORE. I enjoyed seeing the MM (it gets better as the series goes on yummmmm 🥵) and kinda figured about Sin but not exactly how it happened, it was pretty cool though. I liked how this one focused on some training, so Arlow could take down Creedence (was shocked his plot line was wrapped up but happy he got what he deserved). I was wondering who would be the real villain of this story but we will get more in book 3 (yes I totally binge listened and am already on book 5 haha). I won't give stuff away, but I enjoyed seeing some of the characters walls come down, some vulnerability, some feistiness, delicious sexy times, and some added tension haha. I wish we could have gotten more creatures and the background in this book, but I understand why. These are supposed to be long fantasy novels, they are more faster pace plot-wise. Soared through book 2 and went right into book 3. I needed to know more about how Arlow and crew dealt with/handled that big ending. 4-4.5 stars from me for book 2 of the To Tame a Shifter series.
I thought Kelsey improved in this one, in terms of her emotional performances. There was a lot of gut wrenching moments, and I thought she did a great job with that. I also thought her vulnerability with Arlow and more importantly in this one, the guys, was great. 4.5 stars from me in terms of the narration. I thought she did Chaos and Rime moments justice. I think the only reason I couldn't give her 5 stars was Sin's accent. I couldn't tell what it was supposed to be. Sometimes it sounded British, sometimes Aussie. Only critique when it comes to the narration.
These covers are phenomenal, I think this one was my favorite ❤️
i was 30% through when i decided to stop reading the series. I liked the concept but when reading the books it just feels like there’s no direction that the stories going in; they’re just going through the motions without any objective despite the authors attempt to make one through the Kreedance character. I would have been able to read the 5 books or whatever number it is that’s in the series. Arlow’s thoughts aren’t very clear and keep jumping to different things which doesn’t make the narrative very clear and then there is also no world building at all really. Additionally, there are no descriptions of their surrounding - I’m not one for long drawn out descriptions - but there needs to be some to set the scene. I feel like it could have been an entertaining series but i just wasn’t in the mood for this type of thing atm and i had no investment in any of the characters (also, Arlow would risk herself and all her boyfriends lives to save Agatha from Kreedence but was perfectly happy to essentially sacrifice her to the dragon at the beginning of the book. there were other illogical things as well, like why did Agatha even have the dragons eggs in the first place and also why did the dragons even need to be born as babies anyway, they could have just gone directly to looking for the mage, and the guys keep going from hot to cold with how they treat arlow - it just didn’t make much sense and i got annoyed)
Okay first let me say I'm not 100% sure I finished this book... I read it online and so when the pages stopped I assumed that ment the book was over..... For all I know it could have only been the first half of the book. I stopped after the chapter titled; The Mage and her Dragon.
Now let me say, nothing really happened in this book and when it did ....it took like one page of conflict and then everything was okay again. Which I mean.....that's annoying. U can't have this overall plot conflict and then end it with something so simple I mean...you lose ur overall plot and climax scene when u do that.
I am really bummed out that the second book of this series was just not for me, the first book was wonderful. But now I'm going to DNF the whole series because not much else is going for it... except for the incredible sex scenes within the book(s).
Speaking of sex scenes I will say Koonce deserves a round of applause for "confirming" that Chaos is bisexual! Which I'm all about because I myself am bisexual and I love seeing more men represented in this role. So when Chaos confirms he has been with other men before but still enjoys woman I about died and went to bisexual heaven! Bravo!
Overall this book was an easy and super fast paced book which had good writing and some great romance scenes. Worth the read even if u just want the romance 😉 Enjoy!
I loved the first book of the series. The author had done a fantastic job of setting up the entire series with the characters, the relationship foundations, and the start of what I thought would have been the plot of the series. This book though...it just seemed pretty tame without a lot happening in regards to the plot. Now granted, this book did allow for more progression and growth with Arlow and her 4 men both mentally and physically which I can appreciate. The progression of the plot with Kreedence seemed to slow and take a back seat though.
The ending with Kreedence actually seemed anticlimactic and actually has me wondering if he is really dead or if there are other more powerful players in the game since there are still a few books left in the series. The emotional toll that the ending took on Arlow was more gripping, to me, rather than the actual physical fight and showdown with Kreedence. To listen to someone you had thought you loved or had loved you, while they spouted off some demeaning and degrading insults would make anyone question their own self worth, which is exactly what happens to Arlow in the aftermath. She felt used and unwanted, even if that person who used her was a POS it still isn’t a good feeling.
I am hoping to see some more action and drama with the next book.
I’m enjoying the fast-paced reading experience of this series. The storyline is getting more interesting with the Solstice Queen; I’m intrigued to know more about that and if she still plays a roll in the future.
Not going to lie, some parts were a bit cringe and Arlow is not my absolute fave, she can be super annoying but not in an excessive way; mainly how whiney she is about this total douche that she hated anyway, ruining love for her when she has 4 beastly hotties after her affection… honey, I don’t think so. Although, the steamy-as-hell sex scenes, the angsty but kinda insta-lovey relationship building, and the humour totally make up for the above. ”You three fucks asked the one person you were hunting to help you hunt her. Let’s not act like you’re some all-knowing worldly female orgasm connoisseurs.” ICONIC. HILARIOUS. And I mean, the threesome, along with Chaos and Rime’s building intimacy, is the most delicious thing to read and I simply NEED more of it!
I’m excited to see what Arlow and her 4 guys get into in the next book, especially now that the main villain is already dead, supposedly.
I also wanted to point out that, the writing in each of these books is really great! The story flows so cohesively and I was entirely captivated throughout the entire thing. Bring on book 3!
Whole buncha nothin. Boring attempts at character development. Even the spice was ultimately wasted when I couldn’t begin to tell you where anyone was putting anything until it was bluntly stated later.
I just wrinkled my nose as I tried to think back and reimagine the blurry picture painted with the aid of the new information.
The disjointed and poor storytelling was so unsettling that I could barely focus after that. Just as well.
The magic is so silly. She has none that is useful. No! She’s storing it up. No, wait! She knows nothing about her magic or what to do with it. But then she’s easily conjuring clothes, restoring a room full of damaged furniture, and summoning lube! of all things, all without barely a thought. And not a thought was had, lemme tell you.
I also don’t understand the setting or time period? It seems medieval with the castles and peasant lifestyle and witches living in the woods, but then she’s summoning the guys clothes in the form of jeans and t shirts.
It’s very repetitive, which wouldn’t be as bad if they were things worth stating the first time.
And the cliffhanger just continues the theme of having no idea what the author is talking about. Genuinely no clue what the new issue means or why we’re supposed to care. I was looking forward to having a series to read but my remaining brain cells take priority.
Oh my goodness I can't get enough of this series! Claiming, book two of the To Tame a Shifter series is even more exciting and steamy than the first.
Not only is Arlow surrounded by three sexy dragon shifters, but her demon best friend who she though was gone is now back. With the help of these four guys and Prince Linden, Arlow sets out to find her evil ex Kreedence and rescue her friend Agatha and of course Bobble the fish.
Claiming was such a fun read. We really get a deeper look at a lot of the characters, learning more about their pasts and how it affects their personalities. Arlow takes a closer look at herself and tries to let the guys in a little more despite being afraid of her emotions. I loved the dynamic between Chaos and Rime and Arlow's interactions with them *hellooooo steamy times ;p*. It was also really interesting to get a closer look at Linden and his parents, the King and the mysterious dead Queen.
The end of this book was a doozy. While it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, I am very eager to get some explanations in book 3. One evil might be gone from Arlow's life, but it looks like another ominous presence might be lurking in the shadows.
Read with Kindle Unlimited. Not Quite 3 & 1/2 stars. A new reader definitely needs to start with book 1, or will be lost. I definitely enjoyed book 1 more than 2. This book did not flow as well, lost my interest a time or too with the wait at the castle. The momentum was lost in that stint with the Prince. Then the ending came so fast -with a too quickly resolved issue with the bad guy, it was just too easy. At this point, I don't feel invested in any of the characters, & had just enough interest to jump into book 3. So far, I'm not impressed with Arlow in either book 1 & 2. She is too selfish & I don't see her character changing for the better to redeem her for me. The 3 dragons & Demon are too fluid a characters, they always seem willing to be whatever Arlow needs in the moment whether she realizes it or not.
I hoped it would get better, that maybe the world building would develop a lot more. But unfortunately it didn't. As a why choose, it's pretty good. Their relationship is developing slowly and we even got the first 3some in this one. But as a fantasy, it's pretty bad. - The world we're in, is still a big question mark. - The species lacks description and depth. - The magic and shifting is underdeveloped. - There's no action or mystery intriguing enough to rise to a great fantasy level. It's revolved around their relationships, which is fine, but to me, a why choose fantasy needs more than what this gave me.
Also, the kreedence fight? Wtf was that? Was that it? First off, he got way too close to her, especially given this girl has four growling protectors. That shouldn't have been possible. Plus, that was that fight? That's how he dies? Anticlimactic....
HOLY FORKIN SHIRT BATMAN THAT WAS FAN-FRICKIN-TASTIC!! MMM Rime is my DRAGON!! I absolutely loved learning more about all of the characters and their backstories. Sinister Oh Man he is definitely growing on me and Chaos and Kain are both Smexy too. Dang this story is flippin amazing! There are quite a few things that I didn't see coming and Arlow, I really like the affect the guys are having on her, she is starting to gain confidence and gaining some strength that I have a feeling she will need in the next book. Geez I can not get enough of Low and her guys. Such a creative and detailed story and I absolutely can not wait to read more of this series. I couldn't put it down, so much page turning epicness!!
This book was decent. It’s definitely different, but I wish the situation that happened with Kreedence went on a bit longer so we could know what else he meant.
I like the slowly developing relationship between everyone. I really want Sinister in this relationship too, but I wonder if he might die. I’m not sure if he is meant to be a friend or a mate or what. But I want to find out.
I’m not looking forward to the next book since the first sentence is basically “nice things can’t last” and so I know there’s going to be super disappointment or frustration or sadness. It would have been better if I didn’t know about it. Shame on me for reading the synopsis. But I did finally notice it mentions the M/M scenes, oops.
Book 2 - didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book. The style of writing seemed different.... The first book was weird in a really good way. Strong storyline, strong fmc, funny and engaging. Book 2 did not hit those goals. Storyline was OK, wasn't as funny as first book, didn't engage me as much, if anything I felt it dragged a bit, and the fmc reminded me of a bit of a wet blanket. Where did her spirit go? It seems like the author concentrated more on the physical side of in this book, and not so much on the storyline, it felt a bit boring tbh. The end was interesting as we don't really know what the fmc's purpose is, she is still in the dark herself. So I will be reading on and hoping that the writing style goes back to book 1 and the story picks up.
Like the first book in this series, this novel jumps around a bit in plot and flow, stumbling through the narrative while trying to create a history that still seems confusing. All that aside, there are gems in the pages and a genuine feeling that you want our heroine to not only discover herself, but discover that she actually can fall in love.
The story is slowly starting to take shape, tacking on more questions to keep it moving through this ever growing conundrum of a world. Who was the Solstice Queen really? What dies it gave to do with Kain’s family? What does the Prince really want? And why did the demon try to break her in the first place?
