2.7 stars. Not bad but it wasn't a cozy mystery for me. Will probably not listen to the next book

Whimsical

I hope this is the first in a long line of books. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and loved the cat. If you enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries I heartily recommend this book.

On a par with other cozy witch mysteries, simple pleasant read. Does not get inane as some are wont to do.

I wanted to like this book. The description sounded interesting and the narrator spoke with a clear, humorous intelligence. Unfortunately, the story was full of too many tropes and (hopefully accidental) racism.

The main character is a witch (she doesn’t know that yet) who moves to a very small town in Connecticut where she immediately meets the town Sheriff. Despite being very far from Texas and in a very New England town, he dresses like a cowboy. And of course, she thinks he’s very hot. Because witches (women who live outside the heteronormative patriarchal norms of society) need to be paired up romantically with the law man in order to tame and legitimize them.

Apparently, the main character/narrator and her best friend have also never seen a cat. They are repeatedly spooked by movement out of the corners of their eyes that might be orange or black and very furry. It’s fairly obvious to the reader that the narrator is encountering a (or more) cat(s). Yet the narrator (and her friend) is completely oblivious to the animal, other than being spooked and wondering what it could be — even going so far as to worry that it’s a possum. So as intelligent as she first appears to be, how smart can she possibly be?

And then there was the racism. I only made it to chapter six and there were already two uses of the word gypsy — and not even in reference to the actual ethnic group for whom this is a pejorative term, but rather in the casual micro-aggressions of racist stereotypes.

“I liked the gypsy style of clothes as well...” So, she wraps her head, wears full-length skirts with a long apron, as well as a vest...? “Gypsies” or Romani, as they are more properly known have a very specific mode of cultural dress that is not what popular catalogues have imagined it to be. The style the author is actually describing would more appropriately be described as Hippie. Next time, do some research.

“My Nan had been a conwoman. I made no qualms that Nan should have been arrested for fraud. Taking money for such a false notion was downright criminal. What kind of gypsy hocus pocus was this?”

— Double racism points for combining the concept of Romani as grifters and thieves with the magical other and images of Romani women as witches.

As practicing witch and ethnically Romani, I found the novel unbearable past chapter six. One star: not even worth finishing.

A paranormal cozy mystery. Raven inherits a home and tea shop from her estranged grandmother. She also learns that she is a witch with Mr. Leo as her familiar and her teacher. Along with a diverse set of characters there is all kinds of fun and mystery maybe even romance. I didn't guess who the murderer was. A keeper.

A cozy mystery. Witches. Tea Shop. A mysterious murder.

What more could I want?

This was a really fun cozy to read. I was getting tickled at certain points, especially the play between Raven and her newly acquired familiar.

Raven's estranged grandmother has passed, leaving her with a tea shop. The caveat? She has to come and live in Paramour Bay for 12 months, running the tea shop. Raven decides this is perfect timing since her life has been crumbling, and a fresh new start is just what she needs. But then her grandmother's lawyer is found dead in the back of the tea shop, and this sets into motion more questions than answers.

I enjoyed getting to know Raven as she begins the discovery of who she is, and I really hope we get more of her best friend in the series because those two are dynamic on the page together. They really do need to be business partners in this tea shop.

really light reading, interesting plot, but I think things moved a little too fast and everything just happened too nicely. The characterization is a bit lacking. I do really like the concept of a tea shop run by witches

This is four stars for it as a cozy witch murder mystery.
Storytelling and prose is good, though I didn't like her habit at a couple of chapter starts of basically summarising the story so far - made it read like the author had originally released it in episodes. I like reading about other places so was hoping for more feel and detail on Connecticut, but the small town and the main character's nan's house came across fine. The focus of the story is really the tea shop - so I guess that having more of a feel for Connecticut wasn't entirely relevant.
Not much magic in the story so far - because she has yet to learn any.
Good light read, might try the sequel one day, not rushing.

This is my first read in the Paramour Bay series and I'm eager to read the next one.

I'm not always a cozy mystery kind of girl, but throw in a paranormal element and a talking animal and I'm game.

As this installment is the first in the series, Raven is only beginning to delve into her newfound powers with the aid of her mom (who is long estranged from witchcraft), and her mangy cat familiar. I'm very interested to see where the next book takes this motley crew. (Did I mention there's a sexy sheriff, a groundskeeper that resembles Lurch from The Addams Family, and a small town full of busy bodies?)

Nice idea, but I found Raven to be too annoying of a main character, making assumptions that she knows what everyone else is thinking, reacting in illogical ways etc. Then there are the endless mentions of how much she prefers coffee to tea, the paper thin murder mystery with the same reveal that all of these short 'cozy mystery' stories seem to go for - 1. It was this random person. 2. They decide they absolutely must also murder the protaganist. 3. They confess openly for no reason... I was unfortunately disappointed with this one.

Audio review:

Great cozy mystery. Both the author and the narrator kept me invested from the first chapter. With a number of twists and turns and a result I didn’t see coming, I was hooked. Cannot wait to read and or listen to more from this author.

Just ok, pretty standard first in the series for a paranormal mystery. We don’t really get to know our protagonist very well, but I’ll read one more to see if things pick up.

I was behind on writing book reviews, and when I came to this one, unfortunately I had to rack my brain trying to remember it. Not a great sign when a book is so forgettable.

It was well edited, no glaring plot issues or misspelled words. And the story flowed fine, albeit a bit slow to begin with.

Since this is the first book in the Paramour Bay Mystery series, there is room for it to grow. But I can’t say that the character development was very deep, or that the world building was vast. The character that stood out the most was the cat, Mr. Leo.

I won’t be continuing this series, but do see it’s potential.

The book started off really slow and I didn't think I would like it. But I stuck with it and really enjoyed it especially the cat. It wasn't a long book and it was easy to read. I really liked the book and I am glad that I stuck with it.

Cute story, loved Mr. Leo. Raven, I've never read of anyone who could jump to so many conclusions based on such flimsy circumstances as she does. At times I admired her for wanting to stick it out, and other times I shook my head that at almost 30 she could act so impulsively without stopping to think things through. Actually, lots of times she didn't bother to think. Her mother sure was domineering and determined to not let Raven make her own decisions. I'd give another book in the series a try.

The story was disjointed, jerky, and not easily followed. The timeline went from very detailed & eventful in one day to completely skipping three days. This needs a lot of work to make it an enjoyable read. The basis for a compelling book is there, it just needs cleaned up, smoothed out, and clarified.

Confusing

I gave up trying to read this one. The author seems to have a sense of humor. However, trying to read this was annoying. I kept waiting for the action to start. The story would move and then stall out, while the author would go off on a tangent.

Discovering that she has inherited a tea shop and a cottage from her grandmother should come as no real surprise to Raven. She might not have been close to her grandmother, especially since she practically cut off contact with Raven’s mother, but she was after all family. The phone call came at just the right time, but does have a few stipulations attached to this gift from the grave… including staying in town for a year and keeping the tea shop open. Okay, small details but for a coffee lover learning to like, let alone understand tea that part might be a stretch but Raven could learn.

What she didn’t expect was the dead body of her grandmother’s lawyer in the storage room… or who ever this dead guy really was. When she begins to “hear” the ugly, mangy cat who appears in the tea shop actually carrying on a conversation with her – Raven is about to run back to the big city. But then things didn’t make sense… the dead guy wasn’t who he said he was, customers are asking for their “special” orders from her grandmothers storage room and the handsome sheriff doesn’t seem all that worried about a murder in his town. Pretty soon Raven is putting clues together and coming up with the unlikeliest suspects, but she’s not giving up. There is a murderer among her customers and she’s not about to get dead herself before they’re caught.

I love the first book of a new Paranormal Cozy Mystery. Not only for a new experience, but because most often the main character has no clue to the fact that either they are a witch or that the paranormal actually does exist. So seeing each character’s reaction to this news gives me a good idea of what they’re going to be like throughout the series. I liked Raven. She’s no-nonsense, yet there is that touch of whimsy that when faced with facts she doesn’t totally run away. She might not like it, but she stands her ground. She’ll do a lot of trying to find other possibilities, but once she’s on-board she sticks. It will be interesting to watch as she develops and comes into her powers over the length of the series. There is a spark of attraction between Raven and Liam, the handsome sheriff and that will be fun to see how it plays out.

Magical Blend did an excellent job of setting up this world, introducing Raven and her situation… and gave us lots and lots of laughs as she tries to discover the evil deed doer. I adored Leo, Raven’s familiar… he’s just snarky enough to be cute at it. I had fun with Magical Blend, it caught my imagination and I’m about to go pick up the next story in the series. If you love a good Paranormal Cozy Mystery give this one a look, I think you’ll discover a new series to follow – I know I did.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Having inherited her grandmother's tea shop and cottage in Paramour Bay, Raven packs up and moves there, at least temporarily. The will stipulated she needed to live in Paramour Bay for twelve months before she could sell either the shop or the cottage. Raven's BFF, Heidi, accompanies her to help her get settled, and it's Heidi who discovers a dead guy in the back of the tea shop. Compounding Raven's confusion and stress is the talking cat, who tells her she's a witch, just like her Nan and her mother. Raven learns her mother tried to keep her magical heritage from her, but now it just may come in useful as she tries to figure out who committed murder in her new, quaint little town.

I enjoyed this story, but I swear I double-checked who wrote it, because it seemed like something straight out of a Mara Webb book:

-Young woman uproots and moves/returns to small town
-Finds out she's a witch
-Is thrust into an immediate murder investigation
-Feline familiar that can talk

Is there a hard and fast rule that cozy witch mysteries must follow this formula? Moving on. Raven is likable, as are most of the characters. Of course, there's the neighborhood witch (as in, her personality, not her abilities), and Raven's mother needed a backhand for trying to order her adult daughter to leave Paramour Bay immediately and return home. There wasn't much investigating going on. Raven would occasionally be convinced that this character or that one did the deed and run to Sheriff McDreamy with her theory. Um, that wasn't his name, but this being a cozy mystery, of course he was handsome and dreamy. Yawn. Two things aggravated me:
SPOILERS!!!
1. We never learned why the dead guy was impersonating Nan's lawyer. We know why he was in the shop, but surely he could have attempted to toss the place without pretending to be someone else.
2. The murderer walked into the tea shop and...confessed. What? It felt like a huge cheat. It was certainly a letdown. Why bother having Raven thinking about motives and whatnot just to have the killer waltz in and admit to everything? Madness.

Despite the drawbacks, I did find the story delightful. Four stars.

I enjoyed this book. This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened too, while not anything special or original it was fun and has potential, so I will be joining the series again. The reason it only got four stars is because of the main characters penchant for accusing everybody of being the killer and running to the police with the certainly that she was right and they were wrong, it got a bit annoying. Otherwise she made for an interesting character, as did the grumpy familial. The mystery kept me guessing and I never did guess right, although I did think the motive for murder was a bit weak. Still a fun listen.
After the death of her estranged grandmother, Raven is surprised to learn she has been left her little tea shop, especially as she favours coffee. The only stipulation is she has to live the village for a year before she can sell it. Knowing how her mother feels about her home town Raven doesn't tell her she is moving. Getting into An argument with her mother is the least of her worries when she discovers the lawyer dead in her tea shop, only he isn't really her grandmother's lawyer. Opening the tea shop under a cloud of suspicion isn't good for business and Raven sets out to discover who the dead man was and why he was killed. But her grandmother and even her mother has been keeping secrets from her, secrets her grandmother's familiar now has to teach her, if only the grumpy battered old cat could remember. Can Raven convince her mother she needs to stay, find a killer and learn all about tea and potions?
I liked the narrator. She did a good job bring the characters to life in An entertaining way.

Magical Blend (Paramour Bay Book #1)
The Paramour Bay Series by Kennedy Layne proved to be full of fun cozy mysteries full of paranormal intrigue, and heartwarming charm. Set in the enchanting seaside town of Paramour Bay, the series follows Raven Marigold, who is a relatable and endearing character who discovers she’s a witch. From the very first book, I was drawn into a world filled with magical mishaps, quirky townsfolk, and a touch of humor that kept the tone light and engaging.
Paramour Bay came alive with its quaint shops, mysterious coves, and a community that’s as eccentric as it is lovable. Ms. Layne’s writing style is approachable and immersive, making it so easy for me to lose myself in the pages (in a great way – NOT in a ‘I have no idea of what’s going on’ way 😊). Each book introduces a new mystery, often tied to the supernatural, and the twists are clever without being overly complex - perfect for fans of cozy mysteries.
So, whether you’re a fan of paranormal tales, cozy mysteries, or simply looking for a feel-good series to curl up with, Paramour Bay is a magical escape that will leave you smiling. It’s a perfect brew of mystery, magic, and heart. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy a touch of whimsy with their whodunits.
Let the Binge Begin.
Happy Reading…

First book in a new series and it was a fun, clever and funny read. NYC resident Raven Lattice Marigold, granddaughter to Rosemary Lattice Marigold, has inherited her grandmother's tea shop, located In Paramour Bay, in the middle of Connecticut's coastline. To claim the tea shop as well as all her grandmother's possessions, Raven must run the tea shop and remain in Paramour Bay for one year. If that wasn't odd enough, Raven discovers the dead body of her grandmother's attorney in her store room. But wait, it wasn't her grandmother's attorney. There is a handsome sheriff, a cat with an attitude that can appear and disappear, a Lurch type man who lives behind her grandmother's house...and Raven discovers she's a witch. So who was the dead man? Why was he murdered? Is she in danger as well? Can Raven keep her mother from finding out about her returning to Paramour Bay and her inheritance? A totally enjoyable read. I look forward to the characters and the rest of all the witchy fun in this series.
