This was an Ellora's Cave freebie and quite possibly one of the top 10 worst books I ever read. It was short which is the only reason I finished it but it was so awful, so retched, that I couldn't fall asleep for hours because I was trying to think of how many ways to call book rancid.
In a nutshell, the book takes place 8 years from now and most of the female population of the world has been killed by a virus and now with only a few women left, they're considered things and the government not only sanctions rape but demands it. The only way a woman is safe is if she's 'owned' by a group of men and they have videos proving they're taken her in every orafice at the same time.
Did I mention this is supposed to be erotic romance?
The hero was a brutal asshat, the heroine was nonsensical, the plot fell apart in a million and one ways and the basic premise was so disgusting, so horribly wrong in every way to try to create a romance or even something sexy that I was in shock that it was even written or published.
God. Now I want a gallon of brain bleach, a vat of aspirin and something to wipe the stench of this story away forever.
I came by this book last night while looking for book deals, like I really needed more to read It was free so I instantly grabbed it and started reading. Finishing in record time because it truly is a “quickie” book.
The premise is that terrorist let loose a virus that attacks women’s DNA. It was supposed to just make the women submissive, but it went further and ended up killing a huge amount of the female population on earth. Now women need medicine to keep it at bay as scientist work on a cure. There are a few women who were immune to it and they are nabbed up and experimented on. There is a Claiming law in the US that allows a group of men to claim one woman as their wife and share her. The women have no choice in the matter, so a lot of them have gone into hiding.
The series kicks off with Cate and Jude, who were high school lovers but Jude goes off with his brothers to fight the war. The virus was released in Afghanistan so of course the world is at war with each other over it. Jude and his brothers are coming home and Jude makes a claim for Cate. Cate on the other hand isn’t going to share herself with anyone. She steals a boat and heads out to get away from all the men, hoping to sell the boat to buy enough medicine to hide out forever.
The book opens with Jude finding Cate under the assumption he is “claiming” her. Both are still in love with each other, but Jude hides a devastating secret from Cate of her fate. One of Jude’s brothers is missing and presumed dead, but another family has proven that theory wrong. In exchange for information on where their brother is, they have to give them Cate. But Jude is having a hard time with the knowledge he is going to have to give up Cate to a brutal family other than his own. And even the thought of his brothers making love to Cate is more than he wants to deal with on a good day.
The sex is pretty good, I just am not into a man being tied up so much. I skimmed that scene as it wasn’t as interesting to me as all the other scenes. Both Cate and Jude get a chance at being tied down and made love too…equal opportunity? They talk about the brothers taking her all together as in claiming she must be triple penetrated. Yep, that’s right, claiming tells them exactly what they have to do and it sounded like some of it had to be video taped.
Now, I love the premise of the female population dwindling and the need to save the world. It just didn’t seem that this was the concept. It was all about relieving mens needs. So we are back to the concept that men can’t live without sex? I just don’t buy it. I really could have seen this premise make a bigger book with twists and turns, but it was short and kind of incomplete in the little bits of information we get.
For a free book, it was ok. I don’t think I would pay to read this as it really is short. So if you need a book, but don’t have the money to buy one, this is a good one to pick.
Ellora’s Cave has done some wonderful things for my reading library. For one, Ellora’s Cave was the first site where I found my very first BDSM book from. I also found one of my favorite authors on there by accident. Lora Leigh. It is a place where women start, and evolve their ideas into main stream Paranormal Romance. I love women that write without shame, with power, and make each word something to savor and have you thinking for days and nights to come.
I think I have found another delicious female to drool over when I read her unique, semi futuristic books. This one has me very conflicted however. It is about a future where a terrorist organization that believes women should be totally submissive created a virus. Instead of the virus doing what it was supposed to, create a sexually charged, submissive female. It killed 80% of the female population in the world. With that having happened the government decided that it would be a grand idea to take away women’s rights completely (Of course making the terrorists win), and allow them to be claimed by groups of men!
That is my main issue with the books, however happy the endings may be with the main characters in these books. There is still the issue that a woman would write such a horrible future for other women. No matter how unique or clever the concept is, I have issue with his idea. For some reason it just rubbed me the wrong way. However, the clever idea of it is that she wrote the lead female in this book very strong, independent, and unwilling to conform to society’s rules. We also have a male lead that is unwilling to ‘share’ Cate, the female lead. It definitely builds the tension, and I read this book so late this morning that I found myself having a dream about it.
Most people think that genre and erotic fiction is a joke, it has not real place on any best seller list because it’s not ‘real’ writing. However, the storylines that are created to make even the sex within the books believable takes a lot of thinking. You have to weave, create, and believe in what you are writing for anyone else to believe it. I have already purchased the second book in this series. Where this one was a ‘quickie’ the next one is a full length novel and I’m very interested to see how she continues this complicated future she’s created. Highly recommend this book, even if I was split between not totally loving it, but unable to not like it and want to go on.
Okay story. A lot of women have died and the laws have changed that women have lost their rights and are forced to marry more than one man. Cate's been claimed by Jude and his brothers and she tries to escape. Well she falls like a stack of cards. Why'd she fight it if she's going to give in so quick. Maybe it's because the book is a short story but even the sex scenes didn't grab me. In fact, one in particular had me cringing thinking of a douche, which is so not sexy. I bought the other books in the series. Hopefully this series gets better.
My star rating is very misleading. This book technically deserves a 1 star rating. It is the worst writing I have ever read. However, it reached that level of being so terrible that it became hilarious. I haven't laughed so hard in a very long time. The joy this pamphlet of a book brought me was well worth the asking price.
Wretched. So not wroth the read. Very short. They’re supposed to love each other but there is so much hate and the miraculously there in love and he’s not giving her up. So not believable.

Did you know it was possible to be unturned on? I didn't either. I assumed, like most I'm sure, that you were either turned on or you weren't. It's actually physically possible to be so not turned on that you are in another category all together. Picture the Sahara Desert. Not the hotness. The dryness. Not picture the icy coldness of the tundra. This was me. At the same time. Unturned on. Add it to your vocabulary. Especially if you plan on reading this book. There was not a single moment where I was like, "Huh. Maybe this is kinda hot." Mostly it was a lot of clicking of the next button on my Kindle with this look on my face:
There's..no plot, really. Except..is rape a plot? Because that's pretty much the idea behind this book. Government sanctioned rape! FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY! Every hole, gentlemen! Take every hole of the woman you own! And make sure to share with the rest of your group! Women, ask not what your country can do for you, ask how many penises can I stuff in me for my country.
But Jude is taking his lady love FAR FAR AWAY FROM THIS LIFE! After, you know, talking about sharing her with his brothers for many a many pages. And together they will make sweet, sweet, unturned on love somewhere safe where they are free to make sweet, sweet, unturned on love between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN just as life intended!
So long as Cate remembers to take her medicine for that killing submissive virus she has, along with every other female on the planet.
One more time for the folks in the nosebleed seats:
Pretty good book.It had an interesting premise for the story line. The sex was smoking( always important for me) . The only reason I didn't give it four stars was the short length. I can never say this enough... I need enough material to really get invested in the characters. Keep them coming back for more. This is how authors build a strong & loyal fan base. This was a good short read. I did enjoy it enough to induce me into buying the second one in the series. Hope it is a little longer.
I did like that it was a quick read. Sometimes I just want something that I can get lost in quickly that won't take me several sittings to read. This delivered. The story was definitely far-fetched. I could see something like this happening in the way distant future. But when I pick up a book, I'm not looking for logical. I want something that I can get lost in and let my imagination run wild. And this book did just that for me.
OMG! It's a good thing this was free. What a horrible book. If I had to read "her pulsing pearl" one more time I would have thrown up. This author needs to learn how to write.... keeping a thesaurus at your side is good at times.. but changing the description of a girls' anatomy 5 times in one paragraph isn't necessary.
This one just didn't do it for me. First of all, the plot wasn' t good. Now it did have some steamy moments, but the descriptive words used made me cringe quite a few times. I've read this author before, so I was a bit surprised by this one.
Written with unnbridled heat and imagination. A great introduction to the series by Jan Springer. My mind was whirling with "what-ifs" as I read this story. I love a book that can do that!
