Whilst this is part of a series, I believe it can still be read as a stand-alone and thoroughly enjoyed.
Sheriff Egan McCall is still reeling from the murder of his fiancée which happened in front of him after she’d been taken hostage. Her tragic death had, however, benefited others who had organs from her transplanted into them. One of the recipients is Jordan Gentry, his high school sweetheart and the hostage negotiator who was seriously injured in the same incident and the recipient of a kidney. Now, however, Jordan has come to tell him she believes someone is killing the recipients and she believes she could be next. Are the deaths connected?
When Jordan Gentry is attacked whilst with him, he suspects she is right and is in a quandary. He was heartbroken when she broke up with him. The attraction is still there. He can’t bear the thought of watching someone he cares for dying in front of him again. He’s also torn because he knows part of his fiancée is in her. She’s torn, too...... With everything going on around them can they trust each other and discover just who the murderer is? There are plenty of potential suspects but the main difficulty will be staying alive long enough to uncover them!
This is a great romantic suspense that I enjoyed escaping into and recommend to anyone who enjoys reading this genre. I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Hero Egan McCall and heroine Jordan Gentry were childhood sweethearts. She took off to be a cop in San Antonio, so they went their different ways. Egan fell in love with Shanna and married her. Shanna was a parole officer and one of her clients took her hostage. Jordan was the hostage negotiator. She failed at her job (not surprising considering what a boob she is for most of the story) and Shanna was shot in the head when she stepped in front of Jordan. Jordan was shot too, and wound up receiving one of Shanna's kidneys to save her life. Egan blames Jordan for Shanna's death.
That set-up was just several levels of soap opera bad, and I don't know why Delores even bothered, because it's not as if it's ever explored! At some point, Egan no longer seems to blame Jordan, and fights his attraction to her. But they never ONCE discuss this huge minefield between them. They never even have a proper conversation! Everything they talk about is in relation to the conspiracy they're caught up in. But that's nothing new when it comes to Delores Fossen's work.
It's the same old, same old, but the plot here was better than some of her more recent books. It involves a killer who is targeting all those people who received Shanna's organs after her death. It was a plot I found interesting! And it mostly hangs together. Of course, we never really find out what was going on with the gun planted at Kirk's house, or what was going on between Tori and Drew (it was suggested he killed Shanna for her because she was a blood type match), but Fossen tends to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, and never really bothers going back to tie up those loose ends. She would have served this story better by dialing back the attempts at plot twists and exploring that wonderfully soapy backstory between the h and H.
The h and H have no real personality because Fossen never lets them have a proper conversation. The book sometimes feels like little more than lots of phone conversations between Egan and his deputies. But it moves quickly, managed to keep me interested, and as generic and empty as it is, I'll take that over being bored. And that cover model is several levels of hunky!
Lawman with A Cause Delores Fossen Sheriff Egan McCall’s fiancé was killed during a hostage situation. Jordan Gentry, now a P.I., was one of the officers involved in the hostage/murder of Egan’s fiancé. Jordan also had a relationship with Egan when they were younger. After Egan’s fiancé dies, her organs are donated. Jordan ends up with one of her kidneys after she also took a bullet during the hostage situation. Egan finds Jordan on the side of the road, shot and heading towards his ranch. Egan still holds Jordan responsible in the death of his fiancé, so he finds it hard to believe her when she tells him that there is a serial killer killing the people who have received his dead fiancé’s organs. Soon, due to a series of killings, Egan begins to believe her. Are these murders revenge for his fiancé‘s death or is it something else? There are many plot twists and turns as well as suspenseful moments in this story. The story opens with a bang, literally. Serial killers killing women with donated organs from Egan’s dead fiancé provided a lot of action and suspenseful moments as Jordan and Egan try to find out who did it. Along the way, they learn forgiveness for what happened to Egan’s fiancé and realize that neither is to blame for what happened that day. I enjoyed this story and look forward to what happens next.
Sheriff Egan McCall is on his way home when he sees a truck parked on the side of the road with its emergency lights flashing. He recognizes that truck. It belongs to his high school sweetheart, Jordan Gentry, the last person he expects to see by his ranch. She also happens to be the last person he wants to see. She brings back too many very bad memories of the day his fiancee was shot and killed.
Jordan Gentry is sitting on the ground with her back to the front fender of her truck, blood running down her sleeve, when she hears her name called and a light flashes in her eyes. She is holding her gun in one hand and her phone in the other. When she sees who is standing there she accuses Egan of trying to kill her. It looked like to her someone in a blue truck identical to Egan's shot at her as that person passed her on the road. It seems that the people who received donated organs from Egan's dead fiancee are being killed one by one. Jordan is one of those organ recipients. Egan knows he didn't shoot at Jordan so it's time to investigate and keep Jordan safe.
Lawman with a Cause by Delores Fossen is the third book in her Lawmen of McCall Canyon series. The series so far has been filled with lots of action and suspense. This story follows along that line as well. The author has written an inticate plot filled with many interesting characters. Delores Fossen always manages to write lots of fascinating intrigue into her stories. She is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors.
Just when you think and old wound is starting to heal, something comes along to reopen it. In the case of Sheriff Egan McCall, the injury that was Jordan Gentry is ripped wide open.
Since this was my first Delores Fossen novel, I wasn't sure what to expect. Let me tell you, I definitely wasn't prepared to be thrown headlong into the action on the very first page. From the moment you open the book until the last page, you are constantly on the run with Egan and Jordan. I loved how the story revolved around an organ donor and her recipients. For me, that was an interesting storyline, one I hadn't read before. Considering what you have to go through to even get on a transplant list, I'm surprised that there aren't more stories like this out there. The little twist of why the recipients were being targeted wasn't something I had expected either.
Egan and Jordan's back story was enjoyable as well. One of the downsides of living in a small town is that you can never truly get away from your past and these two know that first hand. It was also nice to see that the reason for Egan's attitude towards Jordan made sense. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose your fiancée and see her organ recipient regularly. That reminder of loss and pain would be overwhelming. Despite their antagonistic relationship, Egan and Jordan didn't bicker relentlessly or needlessly. They did butt heads, but it was always with reason, never 'just because'. Now, I love some good banter, even a little bickering, but when it does nothing for the story, it can get old fast. These two weren't like that at all and it was a surprising change.
I enjoyed Lawman with a Cause so much that, as soon as I finished it, I got online and ordered the first two in the series so I can be ready to go when the last in the series releases next year. Time spent in McCall Canyon is time well spent, I'm beginning to see.
*thanks to Netgalley, Harlequin, and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The reason this book is getting two stars is purely for the fact I really enjoy the author's writing style. But that's really the only reason.
I like my mystery/suspense stories to be full of angst and they have to that element of truth with it. Nothing of this story was believable... at all. Especially with the main two characters, Egan and Jordan. They went from the bottom of the scale with each other to the very top within, what? Two days? No, just no. This book was terribly rushed and repetitive. It wasn't enjoyable but it was eye catching, the Author's writing style is fabulous and I believe she could write some amazing mystery/suspense/thriller books... but not this rushed and unbelievable kind of storyline. Though the writing itself kept me hooked, the story and the characters did not. They use their phones an awful lot which was annoying. I liked Jordan, she was probably one of the only ones I did really quite like. Egan was okay, but to me he was just a bit OTT.
I really wanted to enjoy this, and I tried. Believe me, I did. And it was at three stars until there was some random intimate scene involved. I wasn't expecting it and I guess it just shouldn't have been in this kinda book.
Also, it wasn't a great 'who dunnit' book either. I don't want to write how and why because I don't want to spoil it for other readers, but it was pretty darn obvious from almost the beginning and the big reveal was pretty bad.
However much I wanted to really love this book, I couldn't. But that doesn't mean others won't. I mean, if you like rush-rush, fast-paced, predictable but quick adrenaline rush reads, then this is definitely for you.
I'd be interested in reading other books from this author, based solely on her writing style, but not this miniseries.
Egan McCall is ending his day a little frustrated. Jordan Gentry’s day didn’t end much better. They’re going to take you on a bumpy ride so make sure you buckle up. This author certainly knows what’s going to grab her reader’s attention.
There’s plenty of mystery, suspense, and action. I’m putting in a warning here. Don’t jump ahead and sneak a peek at the ending – even though you may be tempted. You’ll just spoil the rest of the book for yourself. This book certainly fits under the Harlequin Intrigue brand because this book is all about the intrigue. Hearing the name Harlequin, you know it’s synonymous with romance.
But the intrigue has to come first here. There are lots of questions that keep coming up that need to be answered. I know you want the romance but our author gives you something to look forward to as the story develops. The mystery needs solving first before I want to see what’s going to happen personally between our main characters. At one point, I had to wonder if Dirty Harry was going to pop out from somewhere. He would be right at home – I could see a much younger Clint Eastwood being right in the thick of things.
The author had everything progress naturally. Nothing felt rushed or out of place. The character’s emotions also seemed natural. Forgiveness can take a while because you have to get past the pain first. But in true Harlequin fashion we get our happy ending. I love the thought of setting the mood as I read but with what Egan and Jordan had to deal with, I think enjoying their story from a comfortable chair is the best way to go.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
An explosive, danger-filled story that kept me guessing and my heart pounding. Delores Fossen has the talent to write suspense stories filled with up close and deadly non-stop action, with constant twists that keep the story raveling in a tangled spin, and the readers on the edge. I absolutely love it when my conclusions are proven wrong time and again, keeping me clued into the tale, making it unputdownable. The suspense and romance stories are well built into the series so that the immediate threat is solved yet the constant deadly danger hang close by. Sheriff Egan McCall and Jordan Gentry have convoluted past. What makes the current situation even more awkward is the burning attraction both of them still feel for each other. They have no room for distraction with their lives in peril, yet with each and every deadly attempt on their lives, the old feelings come closer to the surface, and the situation, emotions, attraction between them comes unavoidably force, that no one can ignore. The speed of the events is high, and it feels like everything happen in one moment of deep inhale. The number of possible culprits keeps the situation jittery, not knowing who to trust or what motivates the killer puts everyone's lives in danger, grinding the nerves, and honing the feels and hunches. Another rapid-fire, edgy, and explosive romantic suspense tale from an author who knows how to keep readers hooked on the tale and wanting for more, I have an inkling the conclusion to the series will be as intense and explosive... ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Lawman with a Cause is the third installment in the Lawmen of McCall Canyon. Ms. Fossen has once again moved me with her writing style she doesn't disappoint with the suspense and action with of course romance. Egan and Jordan were once involved but then she left seeking her dream about being a cop in the city. After her friend was killed which was also Egan’s fiancé he resented Jordan because he thought she was responsible for her death. Now Jordan believes that Egan is trying to kill her but she needs to believe in him and together they will be able to overcome their situation. Who is trying to kill her and Egan? There are so many suspects but one stood out from all of them but I couldn’t figure out how this person was doing it. Jordan and Egan are meant for each other but they are literally dodging bullets and his father is in the middle of this battle. I’m still trying to figure out how each story involves Warren McCall and I want to know why. I know that he messed up and had an affair that lasted 3 decades. From the beginning Jordan is battered and bloody and it doesn’t stop until the very end and I felt so bad for her. I know that Egan loves her but is fighting his feeling for her but in the end Jordan and him are on the same page. They are going to have to move a lot in order for them both to stay safe.
I totally fell in love with this story. I can’t wait to read the final installment of this series and see if the McCall’s can embrace their stepbrother and forgive their father for his affair.
This is the third book in the series. However, I haven’t read the first two and didn’t feel lost or confused at all. Sheriff Egan McCall lost his fiancé two years ago and still isn’t really over it. He feels guilty for not stopping what happened. However, could there have been more to what happened then they know. Jordan Gentry feels guilty as well for what happened to Egan’s fiancé and he blames her too. Things are about to get interesting in McCall Canyon. Someone has attacked Jordan and Egan is the one who finds her. This is the beginning of the mystery. Someone is also killing the recipients of the Egan’s late fiancé’s organs. Jordan got a kidney for Egan’s fiancé but is that the reason she was attacked or was it because she could be onto the killer? This book sucked me in right from the start. It has danger, mystery, romance, and a bit of angst. I am eager to read the other books in this series and have added them to my TBR list. I enjoyed the bit of attraction between Jordan and Egan and how they try to fight it. They had a relationship before so did they attraction never go completely away? I recommend this book if you like mystery and romance.
I love a rough and rugged cowboy, so this one appealed to me. Egan does technically fit that bill, but that's pretty much the best thing I found in this one. The romance is a second chance for Jordan and Egan, so I expected things to move quickly, but given the emotions between them in the beginning, this one moved at warp speed. It just doesn't ring true. Not even a little bit. I mean, the animosity between them is enough that Jordan believes Egan capable of trying to kill her in the beginning, yet they're moving in for a kiss in a matter of hours. Considering the level of Egan's grief and pain, I don't buy it. We also have a mystery to solve - who is actually trying to kill Jordan and why? Sadly, that was just as far-fetched as the romance for me. It's pretty obvious from the beginning even with a handful of red herrings thrown in. It is a quick read, and there are some tense and exciting moments, but for me, the writing is rather simplistic, and the story is rushed and not at all believable.
This book is full of action from start to finish. Who knew so much can happen in just 2 short days.
Honestly, the action is what kept me going over and over again.
I don't like Jordan, she doesn't seem like a very competent former officer and hostage negotiator, her actions and lack of attention keeps getting her hurt over and over again. Like sure, her investigations may have lead her to uncover something unusual that may have set a killer against her, but otherwise during this whole running and avoiding getting kill she is kind of useless.
Egan is OK, he has all hands on deck trying to find out why people are getting killed and why someone is after Jordan. Still he has a hard time because of their past history. It was not completely believable that Egan and Jordan go from having uneasy feelings about each other to a possible HEA, like complete 180 in such a short time doesn't seem possible.
Everything felt rushed, the story, the characters, everything. It was an OK read, that helps pass the time.
Jordan benefited from the death of Sheriff Egans fiancee when it meant that she was able to get an organ to continue living. Now it seems that those who also benefited from the fiancees organs are being taken down as well and Jordan believes its Egan until he's also shot as well trying to help her out. After a few attempts at her life Egan will do everything in his power to protect her an find out who is behind this.
Just wow, this book was pretty great. There was so much going on from the moment the book starts that just places the readers right into the center of action. That was one of the reasons I loved this book so much and had a hard time putting it down. I couldn't help but question when the person would strike again and wondering who was behind everything and why. There was the lead that Jordan was following but I couldn't help but question what more was there. If you are looking for a action packed mystery your not going to want to miss this book.
This author I have seen around several years with interest but finally getting to put my nose in one of her novels. Boy was I missing out too with the way these are laid out and the characters that take you into their tale. In this one Sheriff Egan is the hunk that captures you along with having to watch out for Jordan. The build up in this one will quickly capture your interest with the drama fueling your movements. Disappear into this one as the relationship develops with you seeing and looking for clues. This is a bit of a second chance also with that helping get caught up quicker. Suspense and romance what better combination to get swept away in with characters that have the weight to carry you also.
I was so glad that this story was better than the last book I read. This story NASA really good plot to it. In this story we meet Sheriff Ethan McCall who lost his fiancee who he still greives for. Then we meet PI Jordan Gentry who is also grieving for a friend lost. This story is full of action and some neat twists in it. Its also about letting go if the past and moving forward. Its about giving love a second chance. Delores does a great job on this story. I look forward to her next book.
A new twist to Delores Fossen's books. This time the danger comes from an unexpected person and the reason is not what everyone thinks. There is enough tension, danger and gunfire for two books and packed into this one. A great read for Fossen fans. I loved the twist on the romance. It made for a different twist between the two main characters.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
An enjoyable read that the reader can get lost in . This story had me entertained by the end of chapter two . This is just a love story worth reading because the characters are very likable and the writing is actually really good . I enjoyed reading this book. The road to love is never easy but so worth it. The plot was very well put together. I can't wait to see what this author does next .
I liked this story of Egan and Jordan, but it didn’t hold my interest like most of Delores Fossen’s books do. The storyline was a bit far fetched, and I’m still not sure I understand why Egan’s fiancé was killed. But I’m always happy with an HEA.
Actually read this more than a month ago as well, but enjoyed it the second time around as well.
Amazing how one believes what one feels is hate. When it’s really just love when they put their guard down, must say, it wasn’t who I expected. Yet I was sad that this woman who gave her life to save a friend, who’s body was able to help not only her friends, but also 4 others, that those went to waste all because of greed.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Yet another great book by Delores Fossen. She always leaves you guessing till the end. Really loving this new series.
Lawman With a Cause is the third book in the Lawman of McCall Canyon series. In this book Sheriff Egan is trying to figure out exactly who is posing as him and committing crimes. While having to protect someone whom he isn't willing to forgive in the role of his fiancé's murder. While I thoroughly enjoyed the story between Egan and Jordan I am finding it harder and harder to read Fossen's work. I am finding a constant rerun of being stuck at the sheriff's office or having to sleep in the sheriff's office. It's almost as if it's a continuous of the same plot but with new character's. Unfortunately I feel disappointment in this.
A white-knuckle romantic suspense novel that will leave you breathless, Lawman with a Cause is an outstanding tale from one of the genre’s finest writers: Delores Fossen.
Jordan Gentry is the last person Sheriff Egan McCall expected to clap eyes on. The last time Egan had seen Jordan had been that horrible night when his beloved fiancee Shanna had been shot by a crazed madman. His courageous fiancee had taken the bullet aimed at Jordan and died on the spot and Egan has never quite managed to forget that episode or forgive Jordan for inadvertently taking the woman he had loved with all of his heart away from him.
With a serial killer on the loose targeting the recipients of Shanna’s organs, Jordan knows that she is in terrible danger and that the only person who can help her out of this predicament is none other than Shanna’s former fiance Sherrif Egan McCall. Although the man who had killed Shanna is now behind bars, it looks like there is another enemy at large desperate to settle old scores and determined to hunt Jordan and Egan down and kill them. With danger round every corner and jeopardy stalking their every move, the two of them must put their differences aside and focus on staying safe and catching a killer. However, what neither one of them imagined was having to contend with an inconvenient attraction to one another.
With a dangerous killer closing in on them, Egan and Jordan simply cannot afford any more distractions. However, resisting temptation proves easier said than done! Will they manage to bring a dangerous criminal to justice? And does their fledgling relationship stand any chance of surviving? Or is it simply not meant to be?
A writer who is more than a match for Nora Roberts, Delores Fossen has penned a first class romantic suspense novel I simply could not put down. Packed with jaw dropping twists and turns, shocking cliffhangers that will keep you guessing, sexy romance and spine-chilling suspense, Lawman with a Cause is a terrific read you will read in a single sitting!
A phenomenal tale full of danger, daring and desire, Lawman with a Cause is a terrific romantic suspense novel that should not be missed!
