My Gargoyle

Rate this book
Ryder, commander of the Levarian legion of gargoyles, has a problem. He keeps dreaming on duty—and falling, neither of which gargoyles EVER do. Every dream is of the same woman, and every time, it brings on red-hot, searing pain in the crescent-shaped scar on his palm. Driven to find the woman and the reason for his bizarre dreams, he lets himself fall—right into to a place he never knew existed and to the woman of his dreams.

Labeled a misfit, Tempest was snatched away as a child and imprisoned in the hidden realm of Misfit Mountain. Locked up by Fedor, the ruler of the kingdom, who intends to take her as his bride, she has no choice but to brave the dangerous snow and ice of the Mountain to escape. Despairing, faced with the impossible choices of Fedor or death, love is the last thing on her mind, until Ryder snatches her from the air and into a whole new realm of feeling.

Can Ryder find the key to freeing her and save them both?

Lawna Mackie’s writing grabbed me from the beginning. I burst out laughing:

“I’ve had enough of this crap. Gargoyles don’t just fall off the top of towers.”

Then, Ryder’s hand felt on fire. Why? Gargoyles don’t fall in love…do they?

Tempest had escaped and cried out for help, even though she knew no one would come. Well, she is in for one heck of a surprise.

Her pet, Rogue, a Gargdog, half gargoyle and half dog, tried to save her. He would give his life for her. But…his wings were too small. I love thinking of Rogue as a cute little puppy cavorting in the woods.

They are Misfits, creatures gone wrong and they are left to try and survive in a secret world ruled by an evil demon.

The Silbaps had me cracking up. Trolls, pixies, gargoyles, Lawna Mackie has created some new and novel characters that I have never heard of before. And even the ones I knew about were described in such detail, that I could picture them in my mind.

She has created characters to die for and a wonderfully magical world that had me wanting to soar with them in love, happiness and freedom, but first, we must find our way through the danger that swirls around them.

An intense and very steamy, yet sweet, love story that I read in one sitting. If you’re looking for a quick read that will keep you wrapped in Ryder’s loving wings and deliver a happy ever after, look no further.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of My Gargoyle by Lawna Mackie.

One-eyed Ryder. He falls off his tower (maybe his balance is off due to only one eye?) Tempest - white-haired beauty in a nasty place, Rogue - a gardog (didn't know such a creature existed - hey, they don't. But this is a fairy tale so he's there). There are a lot of different characters in this story all interwoven. I loved the plot and the idea of gargoyles have always fascinated me so to find a story where one stars front and center and in a romantic setting. I grabbed it. Will definitely read more of Lawna's books

This was my first time reading about Gargoyles. Wasn't sure what to expect. Really enjoyed it. Would read more of them especially by this author. She was new to me too. But I really like her style and writing.

One of the reason I love doing blog tours is the exposure to books you would never normally come across. I wasn't familiar with Lawna Mackie prior to this tour but I am definitely a fan now!

I loved this! The fantasy world and characters the author created were just wow!

description

I honestly have never read a story where the world created was so vast with a multitude of fantasy characters all interwoven in to their fantasy world so seamlessly. Oh! And lots of really cool magic to boot.

There were gargoyles, pixies, sneers, witches, trolls, vemlers, and a gargdog. All misfits in some form or another, so they think. All written with very realistic qualities and characterizations.

Tempest has been held captive on Misfit Mountain since she was child. She doesn't know why and has very vague memories of her childhood. What we do know immediately in chap 1 is she is desperate to escape, even risking death to do it. Fedor is the evil king and has his sites set on marrying Tempest. A fate worse than death to her and a union that would probably kill her. You see, no one can touch Tempest. If you do, she see's all your memories causing her tremendous pain. In reading that, I knew immediately there had to be a hidden gift she had. But would she survive to discover it?

Then we have Ryder, commander of the Levarian legion of gargoyles.

Hmm...gargoyles. First time I have ever encountered one in a story and I liked it...a lot.

Ryder was very engaging. The author did a great job with his characterization and background. He is a fallen hero, losing an eye in battle. He doesn't feel he is worthy of leadership. He struggles with his own inner demons as well as a recurring dream of a white haired beauty calling out for help. He thinks he is going crazy, but the dreams feel so real.

The call for help is becoming louder and more desperate, Ryder has to try and find where it is coming from. He takes a fall from his tower, something gargoyles never do, and is transported to Misfit Mountain.

Ryder rescues Tempest and Rogue, her lovable gargdog from a fall that would likely have killed her. The story takes off from this point with undeniable attraction, romance, danger, action, and unbelievable amount of road blocks for these two, and self doubt in their own beliefs. All stemming from being a misfit.

Despite the misfits inhabiting a magical world, the characters are believable, likable, especially Rogue and Spitter, and the romance made me smile quite a few times. Ryder and Tempest were very engaging and their characterizations were very strong where they could stand on their own. But oh the coming together was...magically hot!

Quick read, nice flow. No lull in any of the action. Definitely give Perfect Misfits a try, especially if you are looking for a very different kind of fantasy hero!

*I am first and foremost a reader, a fan. When reading an ARC, I don't find it surprising to come across grammatical and/or spelling errors, it is after all an ARC. It is not something that really bothers me unless it makes the story unreadable. My reviews are based solely upon the story and how I felt about the characters.

This book was a very cute fantasy romance with gargoyles and (new) monsters and evil witches and magic. It was a fast-paced read that clipped a long at a nice rhythm.

Ryder is a one-eyed gargoyle warrior of Levare who has been dreaming of a white-haired beauty of a woman in a snowy world who pleads for help. Tempest is that white haired beauty and is surprised when Ryder arrives in the nick of time to save her as she's plummeting off a cliff of Misfit Mountain.

My absolute favorite character was Rogue, the half-gargoyle/half-dog that is Tempest's loyal, true friend. As with animals in our world, he is nothing but pure, unconditional love. I really liked Ryder's magic - incredibly fanciful, but useful! At one point, she takes a bath in the new cottage he's created for her and her hair is magically shampooed and detangled, etc., she has a bed of warm furs and a beautiful new outfit and she is finally able to feel clean and whole as she looks at herself in the mirror, as opposed to exhausted and bedraggled and dirty after trying to avoid Fedor.

My only complaint would be that my copy was riddled with grammar mistakes through out the book. In the very beginning, the phrase is meant to be "pleading in salvation" but it says salivation. Other mistakes are your/you're misuse, breath/breathe, slime/slim, froze/frozen, etc. These are minor mistakes that spell-check would miss because they're proper words, just not the right ones! However, it did distract me from what was going on and I had to re-focus on the story.

I liked this romance a lot! Despite it being a magical world, the characters are mostly believable, definitely likable, and the romance is sweet and building. You'll like how Ryder can change his size (or we'd all have questions about that wouldn't we *wink wink*) and I know you'll like Tempest. She's a bit too self-sacrificing, but I liked her and I liked how much she is willing to do for Rogue.

This had me thinking of a child’s program, it featured Gargoyles and their struggle to help the modern world.
Tempest is on the run from her groom! He’s not her choice, nor would he ever be her choice. His touch will probably end her life anyway, but Tempest has had enough, it’s time to escape her prison, and once she’s free, she’s off running!
Great! She’s managed to fall and now her life depends on her gripping this teeny tiny branch......
Ryder is feeling rather foolish at the moment, gargoyles fall from their perch when sleeping, but Ryder has, and it’s been several times now, the only thing he thinks it might be is the dream he has, but a commander of the gargoyles shouldn’t be falling as he sleeps! He needs to sort this and fast!
And when the opportunity arises, Ryder does what he shouldn’t do, he falls......
Straight into the path of the person he’s been dreaming about.
For such a short story, it was jammed full of narrative.
I would have happily read a longer version, I would love a series from this book.
And a Gargdog (half gargoyle half dog) he was so adorable.
Ryder is a capable leader, a strong individual
Tempest although scared at first, comes out of her shell.
But she’s careful never to touch anyone. It pains her, it causes her to vomit and blackout!
Can Ryder keep Tempest safe from her cruel master/almost husband?
And why is Tempest so important to Fedor? Why? You’ll find out why when you read the book

Perfect Misfits has a magical fairy tale style that blends seamlessly with a contemporary edge. The world building of Levare and Misfit Mountain was great, it all felt believable...even though there were magical creatures galore!

The idea of gargoyles and pixies falling in love sounds like a rather odd combination, but Lawna Mackie makes it work.
Tempest has lived on Misfit Mountain for most of her life, and suffers from a powerful curse/power that means she feels and lives a person's memories if they touch her. She's known a life of misery and isolation, nonetheless she's a strong and determined. I loved her feistiness, which really made her the perfect pixie for Ryder!
Ryder is a strong and seemingly fearless leader of the Levarian gargoyles, but when he keeps dreaming about a mysterious woman calling for help, he sets out to save her. The chemistry between Ryder and Tempest was sizzling, and as the love between them grew, I was willing their happy ending.

This is a great romantic fantasy, with an original premise and a magical romance!

I received a review copy from Bewitching Book Tours for my honest opinion.

This was a freebie I received on Amazon for my Kindle. I loved the idea for the story about paranormal misfits. And gargoyle stories are rare to come by, so I was on board. However, the execution of the character's dialogue and story development was too choppy and stilted for me to rate it more than 3 stars. Also, some of the actions of the characters did not match their personalities. Tempest is untouched, yet, becomes rather wanton in her interactions with Ryder within 2 days? Meh. I attribute the lack of believability to the fast pace of romance set by the insta-love story. Also, there were a lot of grammatical mistakes and typos.

I'd read another book by Lawna Mackie but I'd just hope that the book was spaced out better and edited. I give this book 3 stars but with edits and revisions, could easily be bumped up to 4-5 stars.

Perfect Misfits is a cute fantasy romance with several interesting characters. Rogue, a gargdog, was probably my favorite character. I love it when authors write animals into their stories and Rogue made me smile.

Tempest, the heroine, learns that maybe being a misfit isn't so bad and Ryder, the hero, learns a little something about love. There were a few awkward phrases and passive sentences that could have knocked my socks off it changed up a little but it was fun enough to get over that.

Perfect Misfits is my first gargoyle romance and I'll definitely be looking for more. Perfect Misfits has pixies, gargoyles, a gargdog, trolls, a villain and a little sex, all set in a world that took a lot of imagination to create. Definitely worth reading.

This is different than anything I have read. Took me awhile to figure out who was who. But I had fun and enjoyed it when I did. I liked it because it was different and the characters and story meshed so well together. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

Book Review- Perfect Misfits by Lawna Mackie

I was exactly sure what to expect from this book. Ryder is a gargoyle that helps guard Levare. He seems pretty grumpy. He has fallen from his perch a couple of times which ticks him off. Most of the time he is dreaming of a young woman with very blond hair and is embarrassed about all of it. Typical male!
The author has created this magical world where all the misfits are taken. These beings are short of perfect and basically are sold to Fedor. It is an odd place that is hard to picture, very cold and made of ice and snow.
I had a hard time picturing the whole world in my mind as I read the story. I don’t think the author was as descriptive as she could have been. Tempest is the special misfit that Fedor wants for himself. She can’t be touched physically. Her powers are great, but you know nothing about her. She is also very innocent and comes across as young.
Ryder dreams of her and has to save her. He is compelled to do so. He doesn’t know why. The author creates this interesting storyline about these main characters that are supposedly bonded together. However, there isn’t enough information to build any sense of history or understanding. I would be asking myself why? Or even what the hell is going on? I finished the story to see how the author ended it, but I wasn’t as pulled in as I wanted to be. I give the story a 3 out of 5.
