I'm rereading the set of three books for the umpteenth time. I'm a fan of alternate history and this is an interesting one. So far, so good!

3.75 I enjoyed it more than the first book, I think it part because we know the characters now, and the canvas is wider than Eastern Anatolia with hints of Larger Rome. Rolf and Germanicus' relationship hits the ole superior loyal vet trope hard.

This is kind of a fantasy book where the Roman empire continues its reign. A bit of mysticism and a story of a Roman commander involved in securing a border. Treachery and barbarians at the door are the main plot. It was an interesting well written short piece that was a satisfying easy read.

I thoroughly enjoyed the premise, who studying ancient cultures has not wondered how they would have faced each other, and the characters, and the arc of the story.
