In Hillbilly Hollow, even the dead want the last word ...
When an eccentric local artist meets an untimely end during the annual Flower Festival, Emma gets pulled into two cases at once. First, the murder investigation. Second, the hunt for a dangerous burglar who has the whole town on edge.
After all-brawn-and-no-brains Sheriff Tucker declares the death an accident, Emma’s search for the killer hits a dead end ... until a vengeful ghost comes calling. Can Emma decipher the mad ramblings of the disgruntled spirit?
Blythe Baker is a thirty-something bottle redhead from the South Central part of the country. When she’s not slinging words and creating new worlds and characters, she’s acting as chauffeur to her children and head groomer to her household of beloved pets.
Blythe enjoys long walks with her dog on sweaty days, grubbing in her flower garden, cooking, and ruthlessly de-cluttering her overcrowded home. She also likes binge-watching mystery shows on TV and burying herself in books about murder.
Oh goodness, the second one in the series really made me dislike the main character. She became a total busy body and did some things that are borderline with me ethically. Also, her ignorance toward Billy is just annoying.
I also think the author needs to give Tucker a break. Most towns will not elect a complete incompetent in the job so making him out to be so bad at this job just doesn't work for me.
The paranormal side was more prevalent in this story, but it is still very passive on the action. I probably won’t continue the series as Emma was completely annoying in this one and if that continues I don’t think I can manage it.
I just loved this cute story about Emma who moved and left her New York business to go back home to Hillbilly Hollow. The annual Flowers Festival was approaching and she bid for a piece of art work that she only bid for to outbid Melody who was her lifelong competition. Another person was also bidding against her, and one of the men practically forced her to sell it to him so I knew it would become an important part of the murder mystery that took place.
I loved this little bucolic setting in the Ozarks and how everyone knew everyone else. Emma's grandparents were such a big part of her life, and I loved the love between them all. Plus, you can't go wrong with a goat named Snowball, a couple of hens named Martha Washington and Grace Coolidge. I mean, I am a bit more of a hillbilly myself than my own life would make one think that to be true.
This book was really good! This is the second book in the Ozark Ghost Hunter series by Blythe Baker. It was well written and well paced, very entertaining and incredibly hard to put down. Much better than expected, and very well worth the time to read.
In this book, Emma helps an artist who was killed. The person who killed her was a little shocking. The author did a good job putting up a couple of red herrings. It wasn't shocking because I didn't see it coming, it was shocking simply due to the relationship between the victim and the murderer. The reason why was sad.
Emma and Billy.
I'm not sure how I feel about them. I like when couples have chemistry. I don't really see it here. I know that it's a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers sort of thing but even then there is something. It's clear that Billy has feelings for Emma. Emma doesn't return them. I'm going to have a hard time believing that she flips a switch and suddenly has feelings for him.
I'm uncomfortable with the living situations. An outhouse? I get that this is supposed to the hollows of Missouri but come on now. Perhaps if they were dirt poor, I'd get it. However, the author has made it clear that they aren't. So the whole outhouse thing is irritating.
I'm not sure I want to read further in this series. I liked it enough to give it a 4-star rating but not enough to care what happens next. Perhaps I will revisit this series at some later date.
Better than the first book. Life had settled down. She feels more at peace and has become part of the community yet again. To make her Grandmother happy she resolves to buy a banner by a local artist. An artist that is killed in a hit and run whilst walking home from town. Plus a local store has been robbed and the money is still missing. The local police don't think the hit and run was anything less than an accident but having seen the ghost of the artist she knows different. Especially when the banner is stolen and burnt! Can she solve the mystery of the banner? Will the money ever surface? Can the killer be brought to justice? Will she ever see Will as more than just a friend? Is she going to go back to the city? Good plot and I liked the way the different strands were pulled together into a solid story.
Entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. A young woman grew up in a very small town has moved in New York City. She gets hit by a taxi and bumped her head and starts having hallucinations. She decides to move back home to recuperate and stay with her grandparents on the farm for a while. She soon realizes she is actually seeing ghosts. With the assistance of those ghosts she starts solving murders and crimes that happen around town. In this particular series the supernatural content is that she sees ghosts. And at times can hear them. With clues from them and just her ability to seek out information she solves crimes. Very down to earth and entertaining check it out.
Really loving this series. Want more. Fast enjoyable read. Great cozy mystery and readable in a day.
Second book in this series. Just want to say that even though I read them back to back; this one could be read as a stand alone book. (I asked this of myself as I was reading because sometimes I find a book in the middle of a series.)
Love that Emma finds out that what she is experiencing can be normal and takes the worry away. Snowball is still a weirdo in this book too, but lovable.
I am ready for the two to wake up and think about the possible romance between them. Hopefully the next book will have an accidental kiss, maybe..
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive a complimentary copy.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Love it when the second book in a series is even better than was the first. Our resident sleuth has become even better at conducting small-town investigations as she tries to find both a thief and a murderer. She maintains friendships, starts to rebuild her reputation as a graphic artist, and becomes confident in her decision to return to her roots and forget about returning to the city. She finally confronts the culprit in a decidedly dangerous way and... Well, no spoilers here. However, I do wish she would begin to act a bit more like a healthy young woman and less like a person with no physical needs. Slow-developing relationships are one thing, but this one is getting ridiculous.
Emma is feeling more at peace and feeling more at home. But then there is another murder and a store has been robbed. It is a cranky neighbor who has been murdered during the annual Flower Festival. Emma tries to help the police captain who is also an old school chum. Nice looking young man but doesn't seem to be too bright. The ghost of the murdered neighbor appears to Emma and says Emma is the only one who can solve her murder. Will Emma be able to solve this case? How will she go about it? Do Emma and Will work well together? I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review.
This is a very entertaining series. Emma is seeing ghosts again. When the town's eccentric artist is the victim of an apparent hit and run, the town sheriff thinks it must be an accident. But then the ghost appears to Emma and asks her to find out who killed her. Of course, Emma's friends are concerned for her safety, but she manages to find clues missed by the sheriff and solve two crimes at once. I love Emma's pet goat, and why can she not see that Dr. Will, her now gorgeous and grown-up childhood friend, is crazy about her???
I have forgotten much of the story in a few hours after completing it. There isn’t much in it to hold your attention despite an engaging beginning. The story of the local girl turned detective who sees ghosts tries to fill in too much in too few a pages. And what finally broke me was when she went sleuthing in the middle of the night in an abandoned place without putting her phone on silent mode! I was rooting for the killer by then...
“ sometimes the very thing you’ve been looking for is right in front of you. You just can’t see it until you shift your focus.”
Mystery, intrigue and romance but a combination. A robbery and a death or parts of this particular episode. Have you figured out who done it? Redone and enjoy
So, I enjoy a good cozy and I really like this one because it’s close to where I live and I like being able to really picture the place in my head. Emma is a simple character that sees and talks to ghosts who ask her to help solve their murders. It’s well written with relatable characters and good mysteries.
I am enamored with this series. I come from a small town, so the name of the series brought me in, but the writing made me stay! Blythe's style is so easy to follow and I feel like I live there, and I'm there with my friends. I moved away from my small town, but would imagine I'd feel the same as Emma if I ever move back.
I am really enjoying Emma in these small town, paranormal mysteries. After an accident Emma can see the dead and her new abilities lead her to solve crimes. A gréât group of small town friends and family reunited gives this series a great wholesome feel, while the ghost aspect gives it a little magic and intrigue.
It's nice to come back home from the big city unless you bring baggage with you. Blythe Baker writes like she is familiar with the symptoms her heroine shows! I look forward to the next in the series. Keep writing!!!
Quick read. Enjoy the characters and plot. Would like to see just a little more of the ghosts. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for them all. I recommend this series.
Since Emma received a head injury, she can see spirits. This time she can hear the ghost as well. Between armed robbery and murder, Hillbilly Hollow seems more like the big city Emma came from than a sleepy little town! Great cozy read.
This book was just as good as book one. The author made it fun to read and entertaining. I recommend this book and this series to my friends and family. Happy Reading!
I might be repeating myself, but these books are great. If you like mysteries, with a bit of country flair, throw in some humor and add a bit of friendliness and romance. I'm glad the main character has others to help her and watch her back.
This is another fun little read that chronicles Emma Hopper's exploits as an amateur sleuth in Hillbilly Hollow. Someone has robbed a local store, and later, the town's artist is a victim of a supposed hit-and-run. Are the two situations related? Are spirits involved? What about Billy?
Nice twist this time around. I'm impatiently waiting for Billie and Emma to get together. Frankly, I kind of wanted to smack her in this book. The mystery was great though and the narrator is becoming a fave.
Baker Bread #2 Ozark Ghost Hunter #2 Another decent yarn in this series which is light and fluffy but with good characters and engaging stories. It is shaping into a good series, but I hope the whole will they or won't they will not overshadow it.
