Bella is reading the best book ever! She’s just gotten to the most amazing part when suddenly, Captain Bluebottom appears and invites her on an adventure. “I’m sorry, Captain,” Bella tells him, “but today, I’d rather just sit and read my book.” So Bella returns to her book and is just about to read the best part when Maurice Penguin shows up and invites her to perform on stage with all the penguins. But Bella just wants to read today! Will she ever have the chance to finish her book?
Librarian's note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. This is John^^^Kelly.
John Kelly is an illustrator, writer and designer who has worked for Scholastic, Macmillan, Hodder, Simon & Schuster, Aardman animation, Lucasfilm, Radar pictures and many others. He has been shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway prize twice (Guess Who's Coming For Dinner and Scoop!). The Beastly Pirates is his first picture book for Bloomsbury.
A pretty OK book about a girl who is TOTALLY in her book (same girl, same) and gets interrupted by the most wonderful things. Aliens, pirates, and more. They all try to have the girl participate in whatever silly and wonderful adventure they have concocted but the girl is adamant. She is not moving her butt until she finished this SUPER AWESOME book. I loved that despite the lure of all those amazing things she stuck to her book. Good girl, I would have done the same.. though maybe also be tempted, not sure yet. It really depends on the book. I did think it was very magical that the world was this fantastical outside of books and I was wondering if this was her imagination instead calling for her to do something else. The ending was fun. Haha, girl, well you got them to do this. :P The art was just a delight, truly a delight. I love the style of it and I love how the characters were drawn. Plus there were so many details that at times I just took a small break from reading to check out the gorgeous pages.
Emma haluaa lukea loppuun jännittävän kirjansa, eikä sen vuoksi vastaa merirosvojen, tanssivien pingviinien ja avaruushirviöiden kutsuun. Lyhyt, ihan mukava kuvakirja satutunteja varten.
This was a cute, oversized, children’s book with very busy illustrations. The illustrations alone are worth checking this book out. From pirates, to penguins, to an octopus named Flabulon, this book’s illustrations are fun to look at and admire. The story I thought was just okay, as I wished Bella would have acted differently.
The book centers around a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. Bella normally plays with her toys on Sundays but today, Bella is absorbed into reading her book. One-by-one her toys approach her to ask if she is ready to play their normal Sunday activities with her but each time, she tells them that she can’t play today as she is reading. Bella gets more annoyed and angrier as the toys approach her.
The illustrations show the amazing time that Bella has with each of the toys, as they each reminisce playing with her, as they talk with her about playing. Bella though, continues to read her book. The toys then gather in the corner by her bookshelf, taking five and trying to be quiet as Bella commanded them to do, just waiting for her to be finished. Why she couldn’t read out-loud to them or be nicer to them, I don’t know but I thought she was rather rude and mean to them.
So, what will happen when she’s done reading? Will her toys want to play with her then? You’ll be surprised.
This book encourages a love of reading through the (obviously) imaginative main character choosing her book instead of a treasure hunt or galactic battle. Vocabulary building text mixed with engaging illustrations gives this book broad age appeal. (Who wouldn't love a band of "Windy Pirates" illustrated with a gas problem?) Pay close attention to the illustrations as they give clues to how the book will end!

A straight forward story about a little girl who is reading a really good book one Sunday afternoon. Three times she is interrupted by imaginary playmates (pirates, penguins, and aliens), and each time she tells them she is too busy ready, maybe when she is done. After she finishes her book she looks over to tell them she is ready to play and is told "maybe later, Bella, but right now...We are busy reading!". The illustrations are cute, the ending is cute (if predictable) and it is nice to see a character who values reading. But it feels a bit short, and the text keeps referring to this amazing part in her book as if readers will be told what is so amazing about her book, but that info is never given. If you are not already a lover of books, I'm not sure you will understand why Bella keeps telling her friends to go away and let her read. And unless someone is reading young children chapter books, they may not have the experience to understand Bella wanting to finish, and needed more than a few minutes. Most children who will be reading this picture book will only have experience with other picture books, ones that can be finished in a few minutes.

Inhalt:
Wer lesen will, braucht Ruhe!
Sei ruhig! Ich will jetzt lesen".

Rezensiertes Buch: "Psst! Ich lese!" aus dem Jahr 2019
Many bibliophiles will be able to relate to Bella's situation. Although it might be fun to play with her friends--a pirate, dancing penguins, and alien creatures intent on destroying the earth, Bella just wants to finish reading her book. After all, she's reached the best part of the book. Her friends leave her alone, go their own ways, and then when she's finished her reading and is ready to play, they are all preoccupied with a book. This would never happen in real life, of course, but I liked the idea of Bella forgoing all those exciting activities and games in favor of getting lost in a book. Bella reminds me of myself as a youngster as I always wanted to read one more page or chapter before dragging myself a bit reluctantly to join my playmates. It's clear that this young girl has quite an imagination too since she has such interesting friends. All the activities they suggest are pretty tempting, but nothing compares to a good book, especially one that someone has waited a long time to get to or finish.
Bella is trying to finish her amazing book when she is interrupted by swashbuckling pirates who want to take her on an adventure, a troupe of dancing penguins who want her to perform with them and the alien, Emperor Flabulon, who wants her to help him defend the Earth. She tells them all to be quiet because she is reading. When she finally finishes her book and is ready for adventures, Bella discovers them huddled in the corner around Captain Bluebottom who is reading them a story - and they all tell Bella that they are too busy reading to join her!
Delightful story about the power of reading and losing yourself in a book.
This is another lovely picture book for kids who love books and reading.
The main character, a little girl called Bella is busy reading her book. She is trying to concentrate and enjoy the story but a whole bunch of different characters keep popping up to interrupt her. There are performing show penguins, a ship of pirates and even an alien in his spaceship who all try to get her to come and join in their activities but she is determined to finish her book!
It is a funny tale story about the power of imagination and the enjoyment of reading. it has bright colourful illustrations that are packed with detail and fun!
Poor Bella, she has such an annoying problem. People keep interrupting her while she's reading. Sobbbbbb.
Meanwhile, Bella evidently has a rich social life, which includes:
* Pirate Captain Bluebottom * Maurice Penguin * Emperor Flabulon the Wobbulous
The ending -- which I won't spoil for you, no no! -- throws into question whether readers are meant to disapprove of Bella or disapprove of all her friends or disapprove of readers... or just find a ton of frustration to be utterly hilarious.
Not being in any of these reader categories, this book sure wasn't for me.
However, on behalf of the groups of readers just mentioned, I'll give the book FIVE STARS.
As readers, I think we can all agree how annoying it is when we face constant interruptions when we're trying to read. As Bella keeps getting distracted from reading her book, She begins to wonder if she will ever be able to finish it!
This fun children's story illustrates how hard it can be when you just can't seem to read in peace.
I can certainly identify with Bella and her immersion in a good book in Shhh! I'm Reading!. The 'temptations' she endures and rejects for her good book are bright, colorful and imaginative.
Shhh! I'm Reading! is very cute. My granddaughter will love it.
This little girl definitely had some temptations while she was reading, but it has a predictable ending that just didn't really do it for us. Funny yes, but I feel like we have read other books that have a similar ending. Cute illustrations and a cute story overall.
The kids and I loved the wonderfully imaginative characters in this book - and the character names - Captain Bluebottom and Emperor Flabulon the Wobbulous. It’s a celebration of reading with a wildly entertaining bunch of characters.
