I can't believe that back when I read this volume and vol. 1 for the first time in early 2012, I said that I love this series as much as Fullmetal Alchemist. What was I thinking? Yeah, I was 18 but this series feels like it would be loved by 13 year olds (although the main character is probably 15 since she's a first year high schooler). I really have changed so much in 13.5 (almost 14) years. I mentioned in my review of my reread of vol. 1 from a few days ago that I decided to finally finish this series and reread vol. 1 and 2 and I realized that I didn't remember anything from vol. 1, it's the same with vol. 2.
I talked a bit about the lack of world building in my review of vol. 1 and it hasn't gotten any better, no new explanations, it feels like an American cartoon where you just start episode 1 like your in the middle of the series (although then at least the world is sometimes explained in the theme song) and every chapter is very episodic. Sure there are some things that feel like they're adding to the overall plot, like the introduction of characters that will most likely become permanent characters and maybe Momoka and Ryuga getting closer, but that's about it.
When it comes to the main couple, Momoka and Ryuga, I don't feel it, I don't care if they get together or not. I usually like those kinds of couples in books and tv, but I don't why, I just don't care, maybe it’s because I don't like Ryuga? And I'm still not sure how I feel about Momoka. She's so focused on her "love" life that things like him telling her that the peach tree is hers when they were kids and the panda plushie that he rescued from the river when they were kids are now so special to her😑 Maybe it's because I'm jaded towards some things that I think she's being ridiculous, although in the first chapter in this book, she was worrying the most about that stupid tree instead of her friends being all right. Yeah, she's only 15 and priorities are different at that age, but Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach was also 15 for most of the series and he was not at all like this (sure he's a guy but Momoka being a girl is no excuse for this airheaded love sick behaviour, gender has nothing to do with it), Orihime from Bleach was in love with Ichigo but she knew what to focus on when they were in a fight. There are so many manga characters around that age who aren't so annoying and love crazy, it's not all they focus on. She's not as annoying as other classic shojo main female leads, but she's also not as great as some of my favourite classic (pre2006 original publication) shojo manga lead, that would be Tsukushi Makino from Boys Over Flowers, she was great and felt like she was ahead of her time (she's also better than Usagi from Sailor Moon). I do like that she's not like Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2 where she's supposed to be a great fighter but is always useless and always needs rescuing and then gets mad at the guy for no reason, there's mostly tell but barely any show (I really hate Akane), Momoka is actually a good fighter (although sometimes it's hard to tell with the inconsistent art style) and while she does need Ryuga's help sometimes, it feels equal, she helps him sometimes and he helps her other times, which is what I love.
When Ryuga's other childhood friend was introduced as his fiancee, I was annoyed because that is another annoying trope that's pretty common in classic shojo manga and is in lot's of modern ones too unfortunately, but thankfully it didn't last long and she seems like a nice girl who's not going to be in the way all the time (I say this even though I don't care if Ryuga and Momoka get together by the end).
The art style is still not great. As I said before, sometimes it's cute, sometimes it's not. It looks the best when the dragons are shown and double page spreads, those are always the prettiest in this series, you can tell that the mangaka and her assistants worked really hard on those.
If I didn't own the series (it has more to do whit how hard it was to find some of the books than actually owning the whole series) and vol. 1 didn't hold such a special place in my heart from when I was younger, then I might have skipped to the last few chapters in vol. 8 to see how it ends and dnfed the series, but I'm just going to have to force myself to read vol. 3-8😑 and hopefully it gets better🙏🏼
Below is what I wrote here in 2012, I decided to leave it here, but decided to change the rating since that's how current me is feeling.
So far, I love this manga series so much! Maybe even as much as Kodocha and Fullmetal Alchemist.
There is one charity bookstore in the city I live in that I go to all the time! It doesn’t usually have much manga (and when it does it’s usually in French for some reason) but a little while ago I found volume two and three of St. Dragon Girl. They actually had up to volume seven but I only bought two and three as I’ve never heard of this series before and I didn’t want to buy all the volumes they had just in case i didn’t like it. This manga follows Momoka, a girl and martial artist who’s possessed by a dragon and when the seal is broken becomes invincible. She uses this power to fight demons. It is a little disorienting to start at volume two rather than the first one but I got into it after a few pages. We start with a story about a peach tree and a death omen. As the story progressed, I really loved this read! I love the mix of action, romance, and comedy and it’s lighthearted throughout! The main characters are loveable and each chapter is so different from the next, from a high school festival and a broken sword, to a new transfer student and a Ferris wheel. I think I’ll be buying the rest of this series from the shop now 😂 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
St. ♥ Dragon Girl is a great magical girl manga. Unlike many others, there is more focus on Momoka’s martial arts skills rather than her magic. Its characters are engaging, and the plot moves at a good pace. The story has a good balance of romance, comedy, and adventure. The story is appropriate for both older children and younger teens, and it will appeal to fans of manga like Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura. The series is complete at which makes it both a short read and a good introduction to manga for the unfamiliar as the reader will not have to wait to find out how the story ends. Overall, I give it four out of five stars.
So amazing!! I really love it and want to read more!! I want to know when they'll admit they like each other!!! They both keep half admitting then some evil comes along and wrecks it all!!! WHY EVIL!! CAN'T YOU JUST LET LOVE WIN OUT FOR ONCE?!?!?!? I guess then it wouldn't be much of a point to read the rest of the books then would it... Ok, I GET YOUR POINT EVIL...
THAT DOESN'T MEAN I AGREE WITH IT!! PLAYING WITH OUR EMOTIONS LIKE THAT! YOU DO KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN RIGHT!?!?! oh you don't?
I'M WARNING YOU!! DON'T GET TOO CARRIED AWAY EVIL!! GOOD WILL WIN!!!

This had become exceedingly addictive and good. I'm so glad I picked this one up to read! I love Momoka and Ryuga's relationship. They have an adorable dynamic which is both heartfelt and comical. I'm loving just about every moment of this!
Wow, I really enjoyed this volume and series so far, and I totally ship Momoka & Ryuga together, so cute! : ) love it! <3 can't wait to read volume 3! : )
