The brilliant new book from Megan Rix, telling the story of Florence Nightingale through the eyes of her young ward. Florence loved cats, and had many during her lifetime. This is the perfect introduction to the Lady with the Lamp for young children, told with warmth, humour and adorable animals. Summer 1888: In a fancy house in London, a kitten called Scamp escapes through an open window and finds himself lost in the middle of the city. Across Hyde Park, a young girl called Beth is marching with thousands of other girls to protest the working conditions in the Bryant and May match factories. When Beth stumbles across the tiny kitten she finds that he belongs to none other than Miss Florence Nightingale, who is now indebted to Beth for returning her beloved pet. So begins an unlikely friendship between the great lady, her mischievous kitten, and Beth the penniless orphan. But when Beth's sister Iris is struck down with illness in one of the poorest parts of London, can Beth, Scamp and Miss Nightingale find a way to save her before it's too late?
This book is a great way to find out about historical people and facts of the time. The mix of the story of Beth and the kittens is a great way to keep young and old readers alike interested. A great way to learn about Florence nightingale and how people lived in the past. I will be passing this book onto friends as a great read.

What a great book, of Scamp, the mischievous kitten, and his connection with Beth and with Florence Nightingale. Gives an insight into the lives of the match girls, with their problems, poverty, disease caused by working with matches (Phossy Jaw) and the shocking conditions they worked in.
Florence Nightingale was a humanitarian and a cat lover. Would she be able to help Beth and Iris to improve their lives. There is so much information in this book, an education for the younger reader as well as an inspiring read for all.
I greatly enjoyed this book, a real page turner and a touching testimony to the healing powers of animals.
I recommend this to younger readers as well as adults, who will be rooting for Beth, Iris and Scamp.
This standalone book is the third in the series by award winning author Megan Rix about historical figures and their animals. It follows on from Winston and the Marmalade Cat and Emmeline and the Plucky Pup. What is so appealing about this series is that readers experience high adventure stories about courageous and plucky animals while learning about true people from history and different historical eras. Although targeted at the junior fiction market there is much appeal in these books for older readers as well. In a similar vein to Michael Morpurgo, Megan Rix is very skilled at blending her stories with real historical events to make history accessible to children.
