Dance in the Storm

Rate this book
Sable Brennus, Prince of Storms, is not a demon to be trifled with. He's endured far worse than hell in the centuries he's been alive, and combined with his fierce consort, powerful friends, and an unparalleled collection of grimoires, he's a near-unstoppable force.

Enemies old and new are out for blood, though, and they'll do anything to get it. That includes challenging not just Sable, but some of the most powerful figures in the paranormal world, from the Prince of Dragons to the son of Death.

If Sable and his friends are going to save the day, and possibly the world, it's going to take everything they've got. If they want to survive, it's going to take even more than that…

Can you say, "Hot mess"? Far too many characters to track, which made it confusing, jumping points of view, too much sex and I just couldn't care less about the focal polyamorous relationship, and why wasn't this book properly edited? So many faux pas that sucked me out of the book only to reread a sentence three times to determine a missing word, a wrong word, a duplicate word, etc. For as long as this book was in the hands of Patreon members (as I understand it), I just don't understand why these multiple noob issues weren't discovered and fixed.

There were a few chapters that were absolutely spellbinding, edge-of-your-seat exciting. But in the end, I most likely will forget this book in a month or two. I think the author was writing a series ending that was intended to be all things to all fans. Sadly, it just didn't work.

Okay. Where do I start? I honestly don't know what to take this book. The fact that I was waiting for this conclusion and was a bit excited to hear more of Sable and Chris. But this book fell flat only because of the new 'twist' that happened between Devlin and his crew. Now, I like MMM. but it's all I could take. I was hesitant with Neirin's story because I like him with Barra. But Avalon was also an interesting link. and theirs was a good match (and their story can be considered poly if we add in the dragons). So, I was not happy with how their relationship turned out. I felt cheated. Well, others may enjoy polyamorous relationships and to each their own. But what I'm trying to say is that Devlin and Midnight as well as Neirin, Barra and Avalon are an established separate couple with their own books. and HEA. So, I don't want them to develop feelings for whoever else, even longgggg-time friends. If the author created a 'new' characters with poly relationship, well that was fine.

So, for most part of this book I just focused on the other couples I like. Like Johnnie and Grimm. Even Jacky and Ned. And Wyatt and Deacon. And of course the main character I was waiting here, Sable.

While somehow sad that this would be the last, I'm glad. If juding from the turned-out of certain characters then I don't want to end up disappointed to some characters left that mattered to me.

I’ve been so eagerly awaiting this book! Books 1 and 3 are my absolute favorite in the series so since the events in the last book I have been eagerly awaiting the time when Chris and Devlin would meet. I also wanted more of Chris and Sables relationship and Devlin and Midnights relationship for that matter.

But this book has left me hugely disappointed. First off, Sable and Chris are separated for most of this book and Chris was largely absent, considering he’s one of my favorite characters in the series I wasn’t thrilled by that, I wanted more of their relationship not a set up for drama and angst. A brief recap of the characters would have been good. I was hard pressed to remember who Phoenix and Emma were.

Even more disappointing.... I just don’t feel the relationship between Devlin and Midnight along with Avalon Barra and Neirin. Devlin belongs to midnight, period. This poly relationship seems to have come out of nowhere and felt forced and fake. Seems like it was done primarily for some really gratuitous sex at really inappropriate times? Midnight was relegated to a supporting role in this book, I keep saying disappointing but that’s the overall feeling I had when I finish this book. Aside from him declaring Devlin is “his”, we saw none of that intense sense of belonging from him and the fact of the matter is Devlin is not his, he’s his, and Avalon’s, and Barra’s, and Nierin’s and the dragons are also relegated to a supporting almost never mentioned role here, poor Troyes! I have reread Midnight probably about 20 times since it first came out and I for one cannot imagine Devlin ever being intimate with Barra. EVER. Devlin and Midnight work, Neirin, Barra, and Avalon worked, separately. I just do not see the sense in smashing them all together, if it was even hinted at in the prior book that I could see it, but it just wasn’t.

When Devlin and Chris finally did meet, it was anti-climactic. I was hoping for so much more! Once more with feeling, SO DISAPPOINTING! The open thread with Lord Tamor was never addressed either and that was something I so wanted to see.

I will read the story with Jed, Charlie and Raziel but not sure I’m even interested in the story about how the poly relationship came to be.

I was so excited to read more about Sable and Chris but they were separated most of the book. It was really cool getting Sable's point of view and I loved the times they were together.

"I'm too sleepy to be hostile, and you know it, demon."

"My ass is way too sore for your possessive demon shenanigans."

However, it felt like over half of the book was in someone else's point of view, like Devlin's. Honestly I loved Midnight and Delvin's book and I wished they stayed together without adding more people to their relationship because they were my favorite couple. Instead they were always having group sex or talking about their feelings with a bunch of other guys. I didn't care about them anymore and it felt like the book was about this new polyamories relationship, I couldn't even keep up with them all.

I'm sure the story was still good but I ended up skipping most of the chapters that weren't directly about Chris and Sable (so most of the book). Although I am very excited to see where relationship goes, anti-heroes are some of my favorite heroes to read about.

Honestly, how to rate this. I have extremely mixed feelings about this book.

Firstly, despite the blurb, this is not a Sable/Christian book. Its more like "basically all characters from previous books make an appearance", so don't read this as a standalone or first foray into this series. You will be hopelessly lost. You will probably be also lost if you read the previous books some time ago or if you skipped some. Its like Avengers: Infinity War, if Avengers also contained polyamory orgies.

Should you read this book?
- add a point if you liked Maderr's writing, especially her early writing, because this is more similar to books like Black Magic or Harem series and not, lets say, Tournamet of Losers.
- add a point if you like polyamory and don't mind. BIG GROUPS. this is Maderr, so we talking 7.
- add a point if you really want to know the plot resolution of the threads in the previous books in this series.
- add a point if you do remember the characters' names from the previous books. and who they are.
- add a point if you like pairings merging into bigger loveship groups, I guess.

The "main" pairings (or groups) which get spotlight are (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THOSE BOOKS)

This book has, frankly, too many characters and its hard to get through, especially if you are not that keen into 7 people getting it on.

But honestly, that's not the main reason for my lower rating - and I was honestly considering 2*.
The romances get kinda nice ending, some news are hinted, etc. Baddies are vanquished, plans foiled, as expected. There are typos/mistakes, which is also expected, because that's like a staple for Maderr's books.

But the plot resolution of "lets make a plan to prevent this" ... baffled me. Weirded me out. Considering the current political climate of USA (where the author is from and where the book takes place), I am really wondering what made her choose this option. I guess it could have worked 10 years ago (and maybe she already created it then and was too stubborn to change it? thats like, my gentlest take on this), but now its just. baffling. And uncomfortable, at least for me.

Either way, I won't be rereading this and I don't think I will be rereading other books in the series either.

Not the ending I was looking for

3 stars

I was really looking forward to the completion of this series as its one of my favourites, unfortunately there were parts I really liked and parts I really disliked, so I’m a mixed bag

I liked how all the characters from the series came together to try and defeat the common enemy. They all worked well together and with some truly powerful people there were no egos and posturing which was nice. I enjoyed the whole storyline and addition of Raziel, the by play between him, Sable and Ned was interesting. I look forward to Jed, Charlie & Raziel’s story.

Devlin and Midnight are my favourite couple from the series. To be honest I didn’t like the whole Camelot set up. It came out of nowhere, I thought I had missed a book somewhere that explain what exactly happened to get to the that point. I love poly relationships but this just didn’t make any sense to me, and put me off every time they had fun times together, I felt like it cheapened and ruined the story between Devlin and Midnight as well as the friendships between the other guys.

After reading the note at the end, I know there will be some shorter stories that will go with this series, but it finished on a low for me and it let the series down.

Speaking as someone who enjoyed most of the other books in the series, this one was a hot mess. There were just too many characters to keep straight at any given point; it was impossible to keep track of who was where and what was going on, and it was only made worse by all the POV jumps between characters.

First of all, I'm glad I decided to re-read the series before starting this book because I wouldn't have been able to follow anything at all. So, fair warning - literally every main character (and a few side characters) from the rest of the series shows up in it, and a lot of plots and side plots from previous books tie in here.

The whole story had a kind of an Avengers assemble vibe that I liked very much. The thing I most looked forward to was Devlin and Chris meeting. I was waiting for it to happen from the moment I realized they had the same last name and were probably related. But when it finally happened here, it was so brief that I wanted to take away a star from my rating just for that. On the bright side, Megan Derr said in the afterword there will be more short stories set in the universe so I hope we'll at least get a glimpse of Chris and Devlin when they actually sit and talk properly.

Another thing that bothered me was

In all I'm glad I read this book, but I'm really hoping for some of those short stories soon.

Megan Derr is usually sensible, more realistic with any sexual interactions of her characters. . .

. . . and, I have been a fan of her Dance with the Devil books largely because of the storyline that she brings to life through her amazing gift and infinite ability to paint extraordinarily detailed pictures of a fantasyland filled with nightmarish to dreamlike characters and situations. The sex between characters was almost an afterthought. Plotlines, events, and a range of disturbing paranormals antagonizing the paranormal main characters took and held commanding precedence, which leads to an unavoidable result -- capturing reader attention. The sex included served to highlight, establish and strengthen the characters' relationship bonds, and although, as the culmination of a fascinating series full of a wide range of nightwalkers, witches, dragons & their knight owners, Pendragon Princes, demons and so many more, this book had to be formatted into each primary relationship's tale. However, that didn't make this any less difficult to absorb. I reread this and previous books in the series to reacquaint myself with forgotten details; that rendered the reading of this last series book tediously drawn out. That said, with the relationships, their frustrating periods of separations -- largely self-imposed -- and devilishly troubling obstacles thrown up by interfering outsiders before each found their measure of harmony and happiness, I find myself truly appalled that Ms. Derr would try to resolve Avalon's life into a five-way whatever you call it. Ridiculous, especially since Avalon's demonic nature would never allow himself to tolerate his consorts coupling with another bonded pair, no matter how close they were as friends. This a world SHE created. In it, demons are possessive, and never moreso than with their consorts. No demon would condescend to allow sexual interactions between their consort - in the case of Avalon, consorts - and others. Therefore, I found this resolution by the writer to be most repugnant and ridiculous. The extended multiple partnering that she developed with Devlin and Midnight to include Barra, Avalon and Neirin, or all three together (and let's not forget Neirin and Avalon's dragons) had me wondering "why?" at first, then quickly changed to annoyance and finally, revulsion. Really, though, is that really what's going to occur with any couple with extended, paranormal lifespans? To me, it seems as if they feel dissatisfaction at being limited to one sexual partner for the rest of their long lives, so each man has a choice from their exclusive group of Prince, Steward, Draugr, Witch, Wolf-Elf and The Pendragon Caliburn and Neirin's dragon Troyes. They get raunchy with all night orgies (there is no other word for it when they either watch another couple, or have anything from a threesome on up to all five together in variable positions; insertion and deposit recepticles; and maximizing as well as furthering the extreme-shock-factor, they seem intent on equal gratification whereby no one is left behind, and everyone has been with each other ar least once, unless initially they began with their original partner.

What I don't understand is Avalon and Neirin accepting another couple, as they were already a three-some with their dragons making them five. It was odd, unrealistic, and Hedonistic. I cannot help but wonder what Derr was thinking aside from how hot it would be. I think it was.simply depraved and humiliating for Avalon and Neirin. In rhe end, I was disappointed, and dissatisfied. Two and a half stars.

I wished I'd loved this, but I didn't. I get the intention, I think, with having a big team-up of all the characters of past books, like a whole Avengers Infinity War/End Game vibe, but there were too many characters, and it's been too long since I read all the other books. Maybe if I'd read them all one after another, leading up to this one?

And this isn't really the book's fault, but I have a personal dislike of characters who had their HEA in a previous book ending up in a poly relationship. I love me some poly lovin', but not when it involves characters I thought were settled.

I did like the tension, and thought the Big Bad was appropriately big and bad, but mostly I feel this one is a solid meh.

I really loved this series but was a bit disappointed with this book. So many characters to keep track of and where the hell did the whole mixing of a trio and another couple (both from previous books) come from? I was like what the hell? Some great action but bogged down with too much sex, too many people and really you already have 3 people and their dragons in a sexually relationship do you need to add more? Not in my opinion.

It does say at the end of the book this is the last Dance book of the series but there will be other novellas. I thought this one was gonna be a Sable only story so didn’t bother with the recap. I should’ve. This book has everyone in it. I remembered who everyone was up to Jackie’s book but everyone else could use a recap. That’s what I’m gonna do before I re-read this one.

But even if I’d read them through, things would’ve still been missing. Most of the characters know each other, their relationships are close etc etc, which is kinda funny since it’s Sable that’s outta the loop.

The story itself was time consuming and nail biting, I pulled a late nighter by accident this time. The characters go through quite the rough journey, touch and go in some cases. It felt like Jackie took the brunt of most of it though, poor guy. With Johnnie second in line.

The rest of the characters are either joining the fight or there for support. There is plenty of sex and that’s mainly from Devlin’s new relationship group and plenty of secrets. Everyone pretty much gets an epilogue, which made me happy.

I’ll re-read the whole series again when the novellas come out. Great series, great characters. Favourite characters were Jackie and Johnnie but I’m looking forward to Raz’s story.

This novel took me 15 days to read, not because it's particularly long, but because all the points of view changes cause me to take frequent breaks. It was necessary in this final volume, but at times tiresome to me, and additionally some pacing issue, a series of failures with little relief in the first third or so.

Anyway. I enjoyed some of it, Jackie's part in particular, and Sable's. It's good to have resolutions now, and paths forward. I will, however, never re-read this series. While I was never particularly lost, I failed to make some connections fast enough. Not sure whose fault that was. Plus, sad to say, I skimmed all the many sex scenes. I suspect they didn't appeal because they were treated so similarly. For a bunch of theoretically diverse characters, that was disappointing to me.

I am happy to be done. It's an interesting world with some good characters.

I can't believe this series is over. The dedication almost made me cry. I look fondly back on the days of livejournal and going to Megan's website to see if she had updated the latest chapter. Through LT3 and now beyond, I can't wait for what comes next. I love these books, they and many others in her catalog are always at the top of my 'to re-read' list.

An ensemble ending to the saga of Dance with the Devil. It was no small task to juggle all these characters. While it was an enjoyable read, I am not sure if Ms. Derr could really get the handle on all the situations in the book.

The book started off with a bang, almost literally, and hardly let up. And it was a long angsty road to get to resolution.

After finish reading the book for sometime, I felt that the way the plot was structured, was the way to minimize the power level at play through out the majority of the book. It felt like it was an author plot device but it did create real tense scenarios.

However, I felt that some characters that should have some page time were left out for the most of it. Like

I do enjoy some of the trails that the characters have to went through. Although, I am not certain of the power levels among the characters.

I am not sure how I felt about the last portion of the book,

There are still a few loose thread that weren't mention or will be covered in future books.

I do like this book overall, despite the problems and the imperfections.

I loved this series from the start, with Midnight and Dance with the Devil being my favorites, so this was an auto buy.
Parts of the book were very interesting and well crafted, others made me want to skip this one and remember the story as it previously was.

Update 10/22/2023
TL;DR version: I love this series.
But I don't think I can ever bring myself to read this "conclusion" again, or accept... really much of it at all in my own personal world of loving these books, because this is not what I loved.

(So I wrote this whole, LONG... thing, and then my browser signed me out and I lost it all, but instead of giving it up for a bad thing I am instead painstakingly doing it all. Over. Again... so you know how important this is to me. I have feelings about these books, okay? Anyway, strap in.)

Okay, so. I love this series. I have loved it since I read the first version of the first book, years and years ago now. I have bought multiple versions of multiple entries in the series (talk about a pain in the ass, but can't be helped). I have re-read them over over. I love the world-building, and I love the relationship dynamics, as unrealistic and (maybe) unhealthy as they seem.

I go back to read chunks of Dance with the Devil regularly when I crave something short and good that hits my romantic sweet spot, as a kind of refresher between other books, or when something I read was kinda meh and I need a pick-me-up. (Granted, only the bits between Chris and Sable, even then characters like Phil kind of grated and seemed... I don't know, forced?) I could recite some of those damn chapters by now, I bet, but I still love them and go back again and again.

When you read through the whole series building up, this final installment may seem a sensible wrap up (maybe that was part of what blinded me at the start). But when you read the books separately, especially the first couple, and really appreciate each and its characters and dynamics, this book just seems like... I don't know. A slap to the face. A yanking of the rug from beneath your feet, emotionally speaking.

And maybe that's fine. I mean, sure, it IS fine, it's the authors book, the author's world, their decision, right? But honestly, it reads like a wish-fulfillment fanfic of the rest of the series/characters, not helped by the "Avengers Assemble" nature that I identified originally.

The problem is is that it's one of those completely OOC fanfic that, while definitely fun for the author, are not necessarily fun for the people who were fans of the originals. Or maybe more like an omnibus remake full of cameos and Easter eggs, so people can go "hey I know that character!" or "hey, I know that reference, heehee" and maybe not notice at first that deep down, their entire world has been re-scrobbled into a weird patchwork hodge podge where none of the original parts quite look, sound, or feel the same, and hey, wait a minute, what happened to my...?

Okay, so. Let's use this metaphor.

Say, the author makes some vanilla ice cream. It's great, we all love it.
Next, she makes some caramel. Fantastic! Delicious. Then, some mint. Yum! Strawberry, pistachio, birthday cake! What a variety!

After that, she makes some chocolate. Great, who doesn't love some chocolate? Yum yum, bring it on!

The problem is, it doesn't stop there. It doesn't even really CONTINUE from there, going on to create ever more more varieties.

No, instead, after the chocolate, she then goes back, looks at the vanilla, caramel, mint, etc. and says, "no! I don't like any of those anymore. From now on, everything has to be chocolate!"
Which, you know, is fine, I guess. To each their own.

But then you go back and try to eat the old flavors, and you find, to your shock and horror, that they've all become varieties of chocolate. Chocolate with vanilla chips. Chocolate caramel. Chocolate mint! Even the thing that LOOKS like vanilla, upon sticking your spoon in, you find that it's chocolate underneath, with just a thin coat of vanilla around the edges.

And you know, chocolate is fine. We all love chocolate. But, after a while, you do want something else.

And, in fact, when you have nothing but chocolate... it even begins to lose its appeal.

You may even lose your taste for it entirely, despite loving it originally. Maybe even the hint of chocolate now makes you a bit queasy.

...That's what this book feels like for me. Each in the series was a different flavor, and while I loved some, liked others, and didn't like one (yeah, the 4th, we all were thinking it), there was a variety, so I could pick and choose as the mood suited me. And, of course, I would always go back for my vanilla. (Or whatever flavor you like best for this metaphor). This final book, however, retroactively takes all my other flavors and mushes them all together into this giant bowl where everything melts together and exists now only in shades of chocolate.

... and that's... not cool for me, actually.

So, in my headcanon... it just never happened. This book now, for me, IS, for all intents and purposes, a fanfic, and so I can compartmentalize it as such to make myself feel better.

Again, however, this is not some angry flame review or take down of the author. They're her books, her characters, and I don't want this to somehow turn on her.

In fact, I honestly think that my original (overly defensive, emotional, in denial) review was connected to my original love for the author. For some reason, my previous love turned into a kind of... I don't know, relationship almost, and any criticism of the book was a criticism of her/of the series itself and therefore an attack on something I loved, an attack on my tastes, even... an attack on me? Perhaps that's what I was feeling.

So I dug in my heels, closed my eyes, plugged my ears, and yelled very, very loudly to cover up my own doubts and misgivings, to convince myself that this was fine, actually, and totally cool, and definitely didn't leave a lot of what I loved about the books originally burnt up into ashes to be kicked into the corner as outdated and unnecessary. Surely I was being immature, for not latching onto these new, more adult, more realistic dynamics, right? Surely this was more mature, more woke, more queer, and better actually! Who needs vanilla, that's so regressive and lame!

There's some kind of deep, profound thinking I think buried under all of this emotional baggage I have over this book and how it conflicts with the others, and maybe one day I'll be able to condense it into something short and pithy, but for now... yeah. Thanks, but no thanks, this isn't for me. The series had 7 books (and even bits of 7 I can hopefully ignore, and hey, the less said about 4 the better, which should have been the writing on the wall for me to originally come to terms with the fact that I wouldn't necessarily like where this was all going), and the characters and relationships remain as they were.

You may disagree, and that's cool, but I don't think I'm being immature or backwards or... whatever for clinging on to what I loved and connected with originally.

And hey, if you feel the same? Fantastic, I hope you know you're not alone. Let's chat!
... and, uh, you wouldn't happen to be a fanfic author, would you? Because I have some stories I'd love to read...

Original review for accountability, February 2021

Look, I'll need to write a proper review later when I don't have a migraine, but a lot of ya'll are complaining about stuff that could have been easily resolved by, I dunno, maybe reading the series that this is the wrap-up for before jumping in.

I mean really.

I will grant you, it probably should not really have been advertised as centered around Sable, because while to a large extent it technically IS, it is DEFINITELY an omnibus-Avengers-assemble type of thing overall, with Sable as merely one of 4 POV characters.

But really, as a series wrap-up? It makes total sense.

It took quite awhile to sort through all the characters and start to remember or understand who belonged to whom and how. Yet, if I had read back to back, I would have been upset if anyone had been left out.

On the positive side, the "end game" had multiple layers that were slowly revealed. The resolution was also multi-layered that built and used team work. It didn't just quickly happen. The interactions and establishment of new ties was satisfying like Sable / Avalon, Chris / Devlin as was watching Jackie's determination and Johnny come into his own.

Basically, there were definitely issues that effected my enjoyment, but ultimately the characters and their story ultimately won out for me. I was also very pleased to see them plan ahead in preventing such a serious attack from getting so far ever again.

**************
Below are my explanations or thoughts on reviewing!
***************
1.Obviously no one review can take into account all the various personal pet peeves of readers. But, I do try to take into account the common ones often bemoaned by other reviewers
2. If used in this review, the term Brain candy is not necessarily negative. It has its uses and at times it is my preference when I just want to pass some time; so it does not carry a negative connotation for me - unless I'm expecting the next great novel. (What falls under brain candy? The book is meant for pure entertainment to pass time. It may be formulaic, from an author published quickly like monthly, things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc.. Publishing industries version of pop music. Beach type reads etc... ).
3. Blurb rating purpose:
Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another type. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read one. I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb.
4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2020) was a 3.72 average for 1390 books. Which considering, you should be better at picking out books the more you read, I feel is a accurate average. I have over 700 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.

I LOVE THIS SERIES and I was so excited to read this book because the blurb was about SABLE and I couldn't wait. I started reading and OMG, it was going to have EVERYONE. I am not lying when I tell you that I started writing all the names down so I could keep track of it. I love everyone's stories individually but it's been about a minute. I tried to reread the previous books but other books distracted me and needed to be read so I wasn't able to reread all that I wanted.

The general premise was awesome and I loved reading about everyone again. It was also fascinating how everyone was kinda related somehow. But for some of them, I did forget their backstory so maybe in the future, I can reread their book and then reread this again.

I did have some issues, one was NOT ENOUGH SABLE AND CHRISTIAN. Come on, it was supposed to be about them and I felt they weren't given more. Two, Devlin and company - I WAS SO SURPRISED because DID YOU READ BOOK 3?!?! AND 7?!?!?! Lol - it was just a bit to take in. And lastly, that Epilogue...I swear, we weren't introduced to that character before, WERE WE?!?!?!?!

I still adore this whole series and I can't wait for the short stories/novellas from this universe! :)

Ahhh there was so much I liked about this ending! But also a lot that bothered me…

What I Liked:
Raziel honestly, probably because he was a new character, he got more description and I started getting excited about him and Jed and Charlie, though I thought he was too nice of his own accord at the end there. Felt out of character.

Johnnie! I loved every chapter from his POV. I think he maintained his character depth the best. But his interactions with Grim disappointed me a bit (lots of mini tantrums…)

What Bothered Me:
Like others, I’m so disappointed Devlin and Midnight joined the Avalon ménage. To me, Devlin and Midnight were perfect as they were and their story always touched me more than any other in the series. The last book they were in showed Midnight and Devlin had grown a bit, were older and more mature (I think they were in the US for a scene in some book), but they like, ungrew in this one.

As others have said, there were a lot of characters. I think it led to somewhat surface-level discussions and I had to trust these characters had deep connections from their previous books, but the interactions and conversations in this book made the characters feel like caricatures.

MM paranormal fantasy adventure.
After several years of reading all the novels and short stories of this series, the author says that this is the end. This book hints at the future for many of the characters. It visits with all of the major ones, and chapters ping-pong among their locations and points of view.
I almost quit reading when things looked most dire for those whom I cared about, after the throat was slashed of a beloved character. Things improved following that, and besides defeating the enemy and rescuing allies, time was wasted for me with dull talk about forming a magical council. There were two marriage proposals also, which was sweet. An evil demon goes around doing good deeds, confusing some.
Too much graphic sex as always for my taste. I just skipped it.
Typos: Too many to list. Besides a lot of needless repetition, there were bucket loads of mixed-up homophones, often ones used erroneously in past books by this author. One or more apostrophe S plurals, a sentence fragment or two, and a misplaced verb. There was an acronym (ICoN) used in conversation several chapters before someone came up with that acronym or the name of the organization it represents.

I really liked this conclusion to the series. Multiple POVs is also always a plus in my book.

We met with everyone from the previous books, only the Mordred clan didn't get its own 15 minutes, but we were with them throughout two full books, so it's okay. My favorite was Devlin and co.

As usual the author created a story that left me turning the pages, always wanting more. We got a lot of action, and there are quite a few sex scenes as well, but the actual romance was not really an integral part of this book. (No, sex is definitely not romance.)

I loved the series, would be happy to come back for a few more short stories, but with this book it felt like it was properly closed.

Reread the series!

I thought I remembered enough of the previous books to jump right into this one, but I should have reacquainted myself with at least some of them. You can pick up the plot easily enough, but keeping all the characters and their relationships straight would be helped by a re-read of the series. There are several misspellings (or homophones, like “duel” when it should be “dual”) and a couple other trifling editorial misses. Nothing too distracting, fortunately!

Oh my god i feel so hurt i literally cried. Midnight and devlin was my favorite couple. Like i don't hate mmm . I actually liked avlon , berra and neirin together. They were okay. Devlin was midnight's. they were exclusive and it made sense. I am so disappointed. Why everyone and everything need to be connected ??Why already established couples developed feelings for someone else even they were long time friends??? I feel cheated. I'll never read this series ever. Midnight and twilight was my favorite. Now i can't make my mind to read those again.

Conclusion to the series with everything and everyone coming together (although as Megan noted there will be short stories coming for Raziel, Jeb and Charlie, Phil and Ontoniel (is Phil female? I don't remember and Jedediah and Phoenix).

So as I said every MC from the previous book appeared here and there were reasons for that (read the story to find out). I found the plot intriguing and interesting and filled with adventure BUT how everything concluded was a bit too anti-climactic.

I loved revisiting the couples but the harem thing going on in Camelot just didn't do it for me.

A very good urban fantasy series all and all, just needed a bit more tightening.

What a satisfying series!

I thoroughly enjoyed how well the passage of time was handled throughout. Not only were details fleshed out in different volumes, but changes in individuals & society over time were skillfully intertwined. I am looking forward to all short stories regarding these fascinating characters.

Eager for more

There are a few relationships that seriously need more time to explain in this but overall a wonderful conclusion to this series. I do hope the author expands on her mention of kitsune. I'd love to see her take.

3.5

I liked the last part best, where they were cleaning up and having necessary conversations.

Looking forward to the Devlin & co and Raziel & co shorts.

There should be one where Amr and Ken, and Rafael and Blaze come visit Avalon.
