Layla, Cricket, and Amelia have made a way forward for their respective subgroups in this apocalyptic world that is a mash-up of zombie horror and fantasy characters: kitsune, vampires, fae, witches, zombies, chicks with swords, and metamorphs. In this last chapter of The Harvesting series, the world quite literally is being torn apart by the keepers of the earth as they punish humanity with a plague of the walking undead.

The three main characters must cooperate to find a safe place that will not only allow humanity to survive, but thrive as well. This is a strong finish to an odd take on the zombie apocalypse that I call a “kitchen sink” type of story (because it seems to consist of a disparate bunch of tropes combined to create a unique alchemy of a tale). I recommend it highly.

This series began with The Harvesting a zombie infested apocalyptic world that will satisfy your “Walking Dead” obsession before it twisted into a paranormal fantasy series that gave it an urban fantasy vibe as we followed different human groups and watched them merge into a tightly knit group of survivors. Magic, zombies, shifters, FAE and more terrorized and enchanted the pages of this series.

There are three full-length novels in this series; The Harvesting, The Shadow Aspect and Torn World, but I urge you to read the two novellas; Midway and Witch Wood. With the genre jumping and twists in this tale, these novellas are essential. My recommendation is to read them in order. I promise it is quite the ride! Layla, Cricket and Amelia are all kickass heroines who you will root for.

This tale picks up shortly after the events of Witch Wood as the groups merge. Karsak gave us intense moments, allowed us to say good-bye and provided plenty of non-stop action before concluding this series. We sort of come full circle in this tale and I loved how the author answered questions and allowed each of the characters to reach their potential. I am still amazed at how our journey began in a zombie infested world and swooped into fantasy with magic, other worlds and more. Karsak delivered a tale and characters that became real to me giving me one heck of a book high. I was deeply satisfied with the way things ended despite the fact that I will miss these kick-ass heroines and their friends.

(RabidReads.com)4.5/5 stars I approached the final book in Melanie Karsak’s Harvesting series with some trepidation. I was worried for all the characters because this world that the author created has been so unforgiving to the characters, and we have lost some along the way. She doesn’t shy away from realism while writing characters that are living in the zombie apocalypse, to say the least. I should also mention that zombies aren’t the only creature to be afraid of in this series. That’s because, when most of the population of earth has been decimated, the hidden paranormal creatures were bound to show up, especially when some of them rely on humans in order to live. So yes, this is a very scary picture of what the zombie apocalypse would be like in this situation. But did I love it? Absolutely!

Reason number one for loving it? The world building. So fresh and new for this genre, at least I thought it was. I know zombies have been done over and over again, but zombies combined with the other creatures here-not so much. There’s also plenty of magic in this world building, and what’s not to like about that? Well, it depends on if it’s a good guy wielding it or one of the villains. Enough said about that.

Reason number two? The characters. I adored all of them and they were mostly all so fleshed out by now, that I felt I knew them. Layla, the sword expert from the Smithsonian, Cricket, the tilt-a-whirl worker from the carnival, and Amelia the teenage, but powerful witch, all become the main characters this time. Each has their own book or novella prior to this, so the reader is invested in each of them already. There’s also a good group of peripheral characters to love as well. Some are love interests for the main characters, some are there because they have fought brilliantly to stay alive, others are there because they have been protected. And some are there because they are of the supernatural sort, of the good guy kind. Each had their own part to play in this book.

Reason number three? Of course, it’s the writing. I found the author’s premise from the first book onward to be nothing short of interesting, entertaining, and at times heartbreaking. She wove the stories of each of the main characters through each of the books to where they all eventually found each other. I thought it was wonderfully done, and I should emphasize that these can not be read out of order because of the ongoing story arc.

This ended up being one of those series that I am sorry to see end. It just doesn’t seem like we have had enough time with the characters. I could see a followup being done a few years down the road in the characters lives, just to see where everyone is. There is an epilogue and I was extremely happy to get that.

I really enjoyed this series. I would highly recommend it to ages 16 plus, due to extreme violence and occasional mild references to sexual activity. Great read!

FYI-This is book 3 of the series, but there are also two novellas that are just as important to the story, and should be read in order with the books.

*Sigh*, so we say goodbye to this world and these characters! This series absolutely took me by surprise, in how much I ended up loving it!! I didn't really know what to expect with the first book, but I did not expect to become so invested in the characters and world. And here we are with the final edition and I'm not ready to say goodbye!!

So our 3 major characters, Layla, Cricket and Amelia have finally teamed up and it's all the better for it. They each bring their own strengths and it makes for an amazingly addictive read. I'm not going to go into the plot because since it's the final book, you're better off going into it knowing nothing!! Suffice it to say that this is an epic end for an action packed, entertaining, addicting and captivating world.

I think why I loved this series is because the characters were all easy to like and engaging and the world building was stunning! The lore and the weapons!!! ;) Each of the lead female characters were kick ass and capable as well.

In all, this book, and indeed, the whole series was amazing. It's well written and developed, the concept was fresh and entertaining and the writing just grabbed you and pulled you in! Highly recommend and I highly recommend you read them in order to fully benefit from the world and characters.

I really thought Kristin James was a great pick for these books. Her ability to bring the world and characters to life was amazing. I felt she truly understood the lead characters and gave them all their own personalities.

Really enjoyed following the characters through their fight for survival. Loved to see how all the
characters and story-lines from each book came together. I was so invested it was hard to put
the book down. I highly recommended this series to those who like stories about vampires, zombies, witches, and other supernatural beings.

I was so excited about reading this book as I've enjoyed every book in the series so far and this was a fitting end to it. It's a bit sad that there is no more! The start of this review has plot spoilers from The Shadow Aspect which might spoil the series for you if you haven't read it. The POV are from Layla, Cricket and Amelia.

The group from the college have fled the zombies and kitsune and went through the portal, coming out into the maze on the Witch Wood estate in front of a startled Amelia. As the survivors grieve for those who were lost, Layla is plagued by her last sight of Jamie and needs answers as to how he is and if he can be saved. Did the doctor's cure have the potential to save the intelligent zombies? Would it save those bitten but not yet turned? Was the doctor correct to do her illegal virus trials on human subjects to save humanity? Was Layla's thirst for revenge on the doctor going to doom attempts for a cure? Can they risk their lives to go back to the college for notes and injections with the zombies and kitsune lying in wait for them?

Beatrice thinks that there is a chance that she might be able to follow the notes and finish working on the cure but is less keen on being part of the raiding party to go to the college to get what she needs. Layla is determined that she will go if only to find Jamie and get a cure or closure. The others argue the merits of who should go and who needs to stay at Witch Wood. Amelia wonders if the cure might save her mother or end her suffering.

The action starts quickly as supplies are needed for the now agreed return to the college as well as fully stocking up Witch Wood for a long stay. But with the magic enchantment around the estate being fae made, how long will it be before the kitsune track them down and is there a safer place to go? Layla in particular remains paranoid and on the alert for any sign of a fox as the teams gather weapons for the attack. There is a lot of tension in the air but the real test is still to come. By the time the raiding party was ready to go back to the college, I was just about chewing my nails.

The return to the castle was pretty exciting to read about with everyone on alert for zombies and foxes as they approach the castle. First a diversion is needed to get the zombies away from the building and then it is time to take their chances and head for the lab for what they need. But Layla is more concerned with exploring on her own and looking for Jamie. Are the kitsune still around and waiting for them? Will they all get back to Witch Wood? And for those that do, will it remain a safe place?

I don't want to say much more about the events in the book as you will want to read it for yourself without knowing everything. I liked the fact that they had to go back for the cure but the plot continued to entertain after that with lots of zombies, foxes and the faint but present threat of the vampires. I found the ending pretty satisfying and it was a fitting end to the series.

What a great ending to a beautiful series! I enjoyed this series very much. So many great characters and so many strong female heroines, I can't just choose one favorite. The author made me want to read the rest to find out what happens next in this amazing world. What I journey I felt I went on with all these wonderful characters. I think if you like zombies or even if you like the supernatural you will love this series! I enjoyed the narration by Kristin James as well very much! I think the narration helped bring the series to life for me. * I received this book from the author, but this is my honest review*

This book was awesome! You learn more about Cricket, Amelia and Layla. I did not want to finish this because I knew the series was done. Must read the other books first for a good understanding of the story since it's a continuous story. If you like kick assume heroines and zombies this is a must read. I am so glad I stumbled on this series. But sad to see it end.

Melanie never leaves me wanting in magic, fae, and zombies in this book. We get it all wrapped in one little package. All the special traits the characters have are seen and enjoyed.

****FULL REVIEW****
*This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review at my request.

Tristan has lead Layla, Cricket and their followers to Witch Wood where Amelia and Madame Knightly live. Layla wants to get back to Jamie, where they left him as an undead. But she knows he's still there, he spoke her name in her mind. The living have to find a way to survive and carry on. But is this world the one for them?

Kristin returns as our narrator to finish off the series. I'm thrilled she's been a constant with these books. Kristin voices each character with accents and tones we've come to associate with them. She fluidly shifts from one voice and personality to another with all being present in one book. I never get a feel of the audio stopping and starting as I listen. The characters feelings and tones match through out their sections and smoothly transition to new emotions as they arrive with events.

We get POV's of all three of our young ladies who've brought us this far; Layla, Cricket, and Amelia. All three have a different ability that is needed to help survive and bring the living to a point that they can carry on. These ladies have all had their hearts filled or broken through the series. And have become stronger in this devastating world.

This is the conclusion to the harvesting series. I'm working hard to not tell all with this review. We get our action and fights along with nervous moments trying to get what the characters need. Nothing is convenient for the characters.

The writing flow Melanie has created here is magnificent. The missions to get needed supplies do not feel as they are created to give more story, the missions fit the places the characters are. The story feels as it fits in it's world and where the people are without creating situations to get to where the characters are. I love this complete feel for the characters and world.

We get our romantic moments and gazes too. Cricket and Tristan, Amelia and Logan are falling for each other. And maybe a few others of the group are flirting.

Melanie never leaves me wanting in magic, fae, and zombies in this book. We get it all wrapped in one little package. All the special traits the characters have are seen and enjoyed.

I enjoyed the ending. We get all our answers. We also see something new for the characters. And... from a different POV that gives us a great view of everything on how it is after all this. What we see in the end, may or may not be what you were wanting, but it feels right. The hints are all there to draw to this ending. Well done.

The Torn World is just what I wished for but couldn't have come up with by myself, but thankfully Melanie Karsak did it for us all! The author knew how to bring this series to a final big bang and then some. She really couldn't have done a better job if you ask me. In the end it all came together and I for one had no idea how this all would play out. I am still shocked about some of the decisions the author did, since I am sure they were not easy but it can't and shouldn't be sunshine and roses in my eyes. The pace of the book was perfect, never feeling like you were rushed through the story nor did the author ever drag out the story. There was always something happening leaving you glued to the pages. This was a difficult book to put down since I really wanted to know what was going to happen next.

In the end you couldn't help but hope that everything would work out for Layla, Cricket, Amelia and their friends, but the odds were surely stacked against them. How could there be a happy ending in a world with a zombie infestation, with vampire desperate to find the last humans since there is no other food around, and fae who want to take Earth back from this "plague" of humans?

You should really pick this series up and take of a long weekend and binge through it. My only issue with the series really was Midway. There was no transition between the first book and Midway so I was completely lost and only after reading the next book did things become clearer on how things fit together. Other than that I LOVED this series and I will look for more books from this author in the future.

The final conclusion of this genre crossing series sees the survivors realising once again that the seelie will not stop until humanity is gone. As with the other books in the series, there are foraging trips, battles and bonds to be made and broken.
Previous enemies are thought to be in the area, but will they have the power (or the numbers) to make them pay, and what of the other entities?

I liked the idea of this series and the way that it evolved. The genre crossing was a refreshing change from the standard 'zombie apocalypse' fare and the other entities mixed with elements of folklore and beliefs was a very welcome change. The ending wasn't quite what I expected, but is in fitting with the way that the series is written and the overall tone, so it still worked for me.

I am a fan of shows like 'The Walking Dead, Van Helsing and The Winx Saga', so felt right at home here. Readers of Urban fantasy, horror, YA fiction and a taste in the spiritual will appreciate the elements that have gone into these books.

Awesome series!

This is my first review of all of the books in this series. All did receive a 5* rating. The characters, world, story.... Everything about these books are fully thought out and absolutely amazing! Relatable characters and worlds you'd almost like to visit. Minus the zombies, vampires and wicked fae.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves otherworldly beings, zombies and a touch of love and happiness through the sadness and death.

Really, really, really awesome series!!!!!!

A satisfying ending

Actually, this is a book of many endings. It's the end of the five book series. It's the end of many subplots, some happily, some sadly. It's even the end of this world, but only to make room for new possibilities. And above all, it's the end of the story. And if they didn't all live happily ever after, at least all who lived seemed set to do so happily enough.

Fantastic series!

So I absolutely tore through this series during the shelter in place. Didn’t think I’d be down with the topic given the times but I couldn’t stop. Layla and Cricket are fantastic heroines, stepping up as leaders and taking care of their people. I felt less connected to Amelia but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the books. Really hoping to enjoy Kira’s story next. Highly recommend!

Harvesting

An action and budding romance series about the zombie apocalypse. The books are really well written with a lot of details and scenery that doesn't detract from the overall story. There are a lot of clichés in the books but they all worked. I only gave 4 stars because there were a handful of errors in the books using the incorrect word that I could not ignore. Overall an interesting zombie book series with a fairy tale twist.

I'm gonna be honest. I didn't want this to end. The author blends the many aspects of the supernatural beautifully. Other books try to do even less and fail spectacularly.
I am also not going to lie about shedding tears. I was attached to these characters and their lives meant a lot to me.
I would read more and more of these. I long for more Crickett and her family.
The narration was perfect as usual.
I was given an audio version of this book; all opinions are my own.

I can finally clean my home...

now that I've finished the series. I couldn't stop reading except when I had to change diapers, feed the baby, and get a couple hours of sleep each night. An interesting read makes me wonder what is just made up and what is based on folklore or actual beings. How much of the other world is real? Most of us will never know.
Book 4 was very short. And the final book, well ended as it was, just left me wanting a new series.

This book was better than expected (sometimes series like this fizzle). So many characters to juggle, but this one actually worked. I've got to admit, the ending snuck up on me. I was not expecting that at all; I was hoping for a bit more theatrics though. At least I finally got a bit of closure, and not too much "cheese". A really well put together end to an overall good series.

I loved this series!

Heads up, this is not the type of book I normally read. This series though, from the first book until the last one grabbed me and kept me reading until the very end. I enjoyed every bit of it, even the zombies, which aren't my thing. Definitely worth the read!

I'm glad that Layla, Cricket and Amelia survive but how do other humans find their way to sanctuary. is the boundary human permeable? From where does the power come to create a pocket universe?

War between faerie factions is mentioned but is not explained or followed up. If the continuation of humanity is a goal why is there no attempt to rescue other survivors? By the end of the book, I was happy to be at the end of the series.

I am not a huge fan of zombie apocalypse books only because they are pretty predictable. This series is worth the read and I highly recommend reading the "novellas" in order with the main books. For me, this series wasn't just about zombies; there are strigoi, "save the Earth' fae-like spirits, witches and more. I loved every character and found myself genuinely sucked in to every scene.
