This boxed set contains the first three books in the Whispering Pines mystery series.
Family Secrets — Book 1 Sixteen years after a family feud drove her from the cozy Northwoods village of Whispering Pines, Wisconsin, former detective Jayne O’Shea returns to prepare her grandparents’ lake house for sale. Once there, not only does she find that the house has been trashed, her dog discovers a dead body in the backyard.
Jayne intends to stay out of it, but when it becomes obvious the sheriff isn't interested in investigating the death, Jayne can't stop herself. Her list of suspects grows faster than the plants in the commons’ pentacle garden. Could it be the local Wiccan green witch with her stash of deadly plants? The shopkeeper who slips into trances and foretells death? The visitor determined to practice black magic?
What Jayne knows for sure is that the closer she gets to solving this crime, the more the sheriff wants her to back off. And when a local fortune teller provides a crucial clue, Jayne knows it’s up to her to solve this murder.
Kept Secrets — Book 2 One month after arriving in the Northwoods, former detective Jayne O’Shea has settled comfortably into small-town life and is making good progress with her task of getting her grandparents’ house ready for sale. Then the shocking death of one of the carnies rocks the community, and the villagers look to Jayne for help, placing her in an impossible middle ground of not wanting to get involved and needing to ensure justice is served.
When a second carney turns up dead, and the newly hired sheriff—more concerned with ticketing tourists than catching the killer—dismisses the death as an accident, Jayne has no choice but to step in. Can she uncover the truth before the murderer strikes again?
Original Secrets — Book 3 Exhausted from being the only law enforcement official on duty, while also trying to open a bed-and-breakfast, Jayne O’Shea welcomes the escape she finds in her grandmother’s journals. Each entry gives her a deeper understanding of why her grandparents moved to the secluded spot so long ago. But as questions are answered, deeply hidden secrets are unearthed.
If Jayne can put all the pieces of this puzzle together, she’ll not only learn the truth behind her grandmother’s death, she’ll catch a killer who's been wandering the village for forty years.
Mystery and fantasy author Shawn McGuire loves creating characters and places her fans want to return to again and again. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. She lives in Wisconsin near the beautiful Mississippi River and when not writing or reading, she might be baking, crafting, going for a long walk, or nibbling really dark chocolate. Why, oh why, did I take so long to get around to reading this book?
This short mystery is an introduction to the author's Whispering Pines series and introduces us to the main character Jayne O'Shea, who at this time is a Detective looking at a drug death. But after receiving a call from her Grandmother and her Grandmother's friend she is given hints that this death is not what it seems.
Missing & Gone is one of those prequels that is really a flashback to how the character started on her journey of solving crimes with paranormal help. It hooked me from the first paragraph and reeled me in so effectively that it is one of the VERY FEW times that I have gone on to read the sample of the first book of a series the author has provided. I am now thoroughly mesmerised with the series and have waded through my Kindle to find the first book of the series.
I received an ebook of this novella from the author through a giveaway. I have voluntarily chosen to review the book and the gifting in no way influences my review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.
A gripping prequel to the Whispering Pines Mystery. This story provides a good mystery and a superb introduction to Jayne and her life before Whispering Pines. My only complaint, as usual with prequels, is that it is too short. Regardless, the story is interesting and complete. This series is captivating and I am so happy I read this prequel. It provides context for the things that are suggested in the backstory of the series without spoiling any of the intrigue. Highly recommended.
I am totally into this series, I can't seem too put the books down. I'm so glad that Tripp and Jayne are finally going to be together. I'm also looking forward to learning more about Briar and Morgan. I hope the next books are as good as the first 3.
...but I really hate books that end mid-sentence, requiring that you buy the next one to finish it. I do love this series. Great well-developed characters. The scenery is beautifully described without being too much. I will definitely keep going in the series, but honestly. These books are good enough that we do not need an incomplete thought to drive us to the next book.

One month after arriving in the Northwoods, former detective Jayne O’Shea has settled comfortably into small-town life and is making good progress with her task of getting her grandparents’ house ready for sale. Then the shocking death of one of the carnies rocks the community, and the villagers look to Jayne for help, placing her in an impossible middle ground of not wanting to get involved and needing to ensure justice is served.

Original Secrets: A Whispering Pines Mystery, Book Three
Exhausted from being the only law enforcement official on duty, while also trying to open a bed-and-breakfast, Jayne O’Shea welcomes the escape she finds in her grandmother’s journals.
What readers are saying:
“I've read them all and just want to go back.”
“I wish Whispering Pines was a real place”
“If you enjoy honest, rather raw characters seeking direction, and the consequences of past mistakes, you'll enjoy this series as much as I have. Do read the books in written order to avoid spoilers.”
“I really enjoy how the characters continue to evolve in this series and the new eccentrics fit right in!”
“I totally fell in love with Whispering Pines both the village and the story. I will warn readers these aren't stand-alone stories, they need to be read in order. There are several mysteries going at a time. Murder mysteries always have a bad guy but in this case the solutions are kind of happy endings. The writing style is very readable but very hard to put down. I would gladly plan my next trip to Whispering Pines.”

I began reading this set with a bit of trepidation, having decided that if chanting, magic, and casting of spells started, it would be a quick end. What I found was a delightful entry into a small town where the original settlers had hidden secrets for too long. I really like the characters. They are well described and not unlike us, except for the witch thing. I especially enjoyed the main character, Jayne, as she spoke to the many sides of herself, with mirror Jayne being my favorite. There are a few punctuation errors, but they weren’t so frequent as to be a distraction. Wrongly using pronouns has become a trend and an irritant for me, and these books are a prime example. Even if writers misuse subjective and objective pronouns, editors should know better. All in all, though, I enjoyed the beginning of this series.

This author is definitely someone whose work I want to keep reading. Two books, two winners!
Kept Secrets, Whispering Pines #2 - Another intriguing story by a very good author. Now we're being to know our main characters as they grow in this book, while remaining believable and realistic. The well written, fast paced plot keeps the reader interested, making it hard to put the book down. The author’s descriptions leave the reader with clear pictures about the town, townspeople and property. I contacted the author to review her books since she writes such substantial stories that leaves a reader satisfied.
Original Secrets, Whispering Pines #3 – This is the best of the series. So intriguing that the reader can’t put the book down. A well written, suspense filled book with two deaths forty years apart that may be connected. The characters are steadily growing, even the hated ones are interesting. Their dialog is realistic and non of The Stupid Formula for these characters. Her descriptions are clear and you’re there in Whispering Pines. I’m looking forward to the next book. I contacted the author to review her books; her stories are substantial and the reader is satisfied when finished reading one of her books.
Hidden Secrets, Whispering Pines #4 - Another hard to put down story. Well written, suspense filled and full of intrigue, still with an interesting group of characters with new ones added to boot. This substantial story has several stories going at once, including the past and the future and the worries that stem from them. I've never been disappointed by any book written by Ms. McGuire and I look forward to more of her work. I contacted the author to review her books.
Missing & Gone - An interesting novella. This well written story introduces the main and some of the secondary characters of the book Family Secrets. It's a quickly read suspense story, which I read after Family Secrets; I didn't miss not having read M&G before FS. A conflict: Jayne knows her grandmother is a Wiccan, but she forgot it in FS? Minor detail, both are must reads, actually any of the author's books are must reads.
Sticks and Stones - A surprising, intense novel. Not knowing what to expect from this new-to-me author, I started reading a book that turned out to be mesmerizing. I couldn't stop reading this well written, thought out book with its interesting characters and storyline full of twists, even thought the age group doesn't interest me. I've had this book a while and am glad I finally got around to reading it. My next read is Family Secrets.

Whispering Pines series: Veiled Secrets #6 - I'm absolutely addicted to this series. Ms. McGuire is on my top ten list of favorite authors. This is another great addition. The story begins a month after Rival Secrets ended. There are a lot of surprises, good and bad, for everyone in Whispering Pines. Law enforcement will definitely feel the brunt of the happenings.
There are two good endings or beginnings at the end of the book. The storylines were very intriguing, suspense filled and mesmerizing making it hard to put the book down until the end. The author's vivid descriptions of the Samhain event was pretty well done; I almost wanted to be there, but it's too far North for me. The characters keep evolving with each book and Flavia is going to go nuclear soon by the way she's acting, but that's another story. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Rival Secrets #5 - Another substantial and interesting read. Rival picks up a month after Hidden Secrets (#4) ends. The well thought out story lines keep the reader immersed until the last page. Every book in this series has been great and this one is no different. The regular characters keep showing more of their secrets and growth, and the reader pulls for them. Their dialog is interesting without any stupidity, just realistic and clean. There's touches of sexual tension and hints of mysteries to come. The murder was well handled and while there were plenty of suspects, the path to solving the crime was interesting. As usual, there were kinks along the path, but that's what keeps the reader involved with the story. This is a must read series, which should be read in order to find out all the secrets and learn the village and its folk. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

When a second carnie is killed and the sheriff's investigation lasts less than an hour and the death is passed off as an accident he loses his job. It's tourist season and they need a sheriff. Whom will they hire now? Jayne is still waiting to hear from her mother about turning the house into a B&B. Will the friendship between Jayne and Tripp turn into something more? Will Jayne find out what is going on in this quiet little village? This a multi-layered story with a well thought out plot and very well written. I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review.
Original Secrets Jayne has found her gran's journals and has been reading them. She has learned about a murder that happened 40 years ago and feels that it has something to do with her gran's death. She doesn't believe gran's death was an accident. Is she right? Is she now in danger? Come along on this ride and find out. Like the other books in this series, this one is well written. I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.
A mixed bag. Former detective, Jayne O’Shea, returns to the home of her grandparents to clear out the family home before selling. But this family, and the community that’s grown up on their land, are not your usual group of neighbours, by design. They are all misfits, and most are followers of Wiccan. At heart, though, they are human, and the ambitions, concerns and conflicts humans bring upon themselves are reflected here, too, leading to mistrust, hatred, and death. Jayne finds herself right in the middle, getting involved despite her best intentions, while also trying to figure out what she wants from life and love. The premise is interesting, and the characters are not all one-dimensional. The deaths throw up some unexpected reveals and twists. The Wiccan beliefs give the books a different, but not too much of a “woohoo” vibe, as Jayne puts it. But the pacing is slow, the investigative work amateurish, and the conclusions to the murders, mysteries and Jayne’s future were so predictable that it became a slog to finish the series.
The Whispering Pines Mystery Series by Shawn McGuire is a perfect blend of cozy mystery, small-town charm, and just the right sprinkle of supernatural elements. following Jane O’Shea who has a knack for solving mysteries that seem to find her no matter how much she tries to avoid them. The town itself is a character in its own right – a little quirky, idyllic, and full of secrets. The locals are a fun mix of personalities, from the nosy neighbours to more endearing eccentrics - and their interactions gives the series an extra element of interest along with some ‘warm-fuzzies’. Ms. McGuire manages to balance lighthearted coziness with genuinely intriguing mysteries. Each book has its own unique twist, and while the stakes aren’t overly high/intense, they’re enough to keep you flipping pages late into the night. Plus, the touch of the paranormal adds an extra layer of fun without overwhelming the story. Recommend for a binge-worthy read. Happy Reading…
Family Secrets Jayne returning to this small town to prepare her grandmother’s house for sale. A murdered body was not on her agenda, nor on anyone else’s. A small town, Wicca was a known thing, but they were unconcerned. She investigate , giving us a good story and a good beginning to series. Kept Secrets Jayne is busying solving the murders of the carnies in town, one, now there is another. The sheriff is unconcerned, so she steps up. A town of quirky people, even though the setting seems peaceful Original Secrets Jayne finds her grandmother’s journals that uncovers-secrets.and the town maybe small and tranquil, but seems like a killer has been living there. Too many murders since she has come back..good series
I love a good mystery, and these are a fun read. The Whispering Pines series are murder mysteries with a bit of magic and just a touch of romance...nothing explicit, thank you. They sucked me in with memories of the smells, sights and sounds of camping in the woods, near the water...wood burning in the campfires, pine trees creaking and that lovely pine smell, the crunch of pine needles underfoot, water lapping at the shore, and the excited hustle and bustle of the tourist village that is Whispering Pines. And, I loved the herb and/or crystals mentioned from time to time, with explanations of the properties with which they are endowed. Can't wait to read the rest of this charming series.
I really enjoyed these three books. There are a lot of interesting aspects to Whispering Pines and the characters who live there. The carnies were unique and well done. The author conveyed them as anything other than deformed or challenged which is a real trick. They were simply people with unique careers suited to their talents. Sometimes I felt that the main character was a bit pushy beyond normal but I guess that was intentional so she could solve the crimes. Her personal struggles added to an intelligent mix of events. Overall, talented writer and real page turners. Moving on to book 4!
The author pulls you into the story & makes you feel as if you are there which is what readers want. After reading into the night several times, I had to limit myself while exercising only because I wouldn't get anything else done. She brings the reality of ordinary life with things that people deal with & work through, bringing home the point that nothing is perfect. It has mystery without being "campy" along with twists & turns within the mystery. A joy to read!
I gave this set of books 4 stars because of discrepancies between the stories (eg, in the first book the sisters had been 10 and 6 when they last went to Whispering Pines, but in the last book they had been 12 and 8), and because the books badly need proofreading. The main annoyance for me was the use of "her and I" when it clearly should have been "her and me" - this mistake was made throughout the books. However, the stories were intriguing and the people and place were really enticing (I'd like to go there!) so I enjoyed the books overall.
I think I may have changed my mind. I’m retired, we’ve lived in the same house for 25 years. I’ve made 20-plus moves with college, military, and a 30 year career, and have sworn I’d never move again. Reading about Whispering Pines sure has muddied my mind. Yes, the murders aren’t something I’d like to deal with, buy I might be able to rationalize away. Thanks for a REALLY GREAT read. I suspect I won’t relocate because I really DO NOT want to move. Whispering Pines doesn’t really exist - does it? I guess I just have to read the of the books in the series. Thanks again!
I'm afraid I found this dull and not at all riveting, which in turn translates to my making little emotional connection with the main character. She seemed flat to me and her investigations as a law enforcer very unprofessional. It seemed more like a book written for young adults than a serious attempt at a crime thriller. The most interesting and fun parts where the voice seemed 'just right' were her conversations with her dog and the descriptions of her pet. :) So why did I read all three novels? Well, I'd got the box set and thought I might as well...
Whispering Pines Mysteries is such a great set of books and I keep forgetting that the characters are fictional
Whispering Pines Mysteries is one of those books that you can't put down and when you do, you forget the characters are fictional. I keep expecting to meet Morgan, Tripp and Jayne on my next trip into my hometown. That's what you look for in a great book but few measure up to that yardstick. I highly recommend this box set to anyone and everyone.
Due to eye issues and damage Alexa reads to me. This box 📦set of three very will written romantic thriller adventure mysteries in the Whispering Pines mystery Series with interesting will developed characters. The story line are each different with lots of complicated fast moving action leading to each conclusion. I would recommend this series to readers of mysteries. Enjoy the adventure of reading 📚2021 😊
Good for anyone who enjoys mystery, quirky characters and magic! Had me guessing all through the first three books. Can't wait to find out what happens to the sheriffs budding romance. This is definitely not a romance novel or I would have stopped reading it. There is just enough to make you wonder how it will develop. Characters you can love, hate and wonder about.
I was expecting a bit of mystery and intrigue but found a book of some of the best story telling that I've read in many a day. From page one to the last page of book three, it has been a consummate page turner. LOVED every minute.
Just paid real money for the next set....I just don't do that...had to this time...
Have been up all night finishing volume 3. I'm too old for this! I love Jayne and Media and all the wonderful characters McGuire has introduced us to. I don't know much about alternative religions but found that aspect extremely interesting. I enjoyed Wisconsin and Whispering Pines and the unusual concept of the village. A wonderful adventure. Bring on volume 4!
I love this series! A slow burn romance, various murders and suspicious deaths, and a hint of magic make each of these novels addictive. I can't put these books down, and so far have finished each of them within a day or two. I can't wait to see what happens between Jayne and Tripp (and hilarious little dog Meeka). Great characterization across the board, both the likeable and unlikeable characters, as well!
I am enjoying this series and will move on to the next books. The world building is well done and the character development works in tandem with the storylines. The mysteries are intriguing and the doses of woo-woo give the books a slight paranormal bent.
Books one and two do a nice build up for the big revelations in book three. Book three ends with some big shocks and changes leaving a great segue to book four.
I really enjoy this series. I reviewed the first two books separately, so I'm mainly reviewing the third book of the collection here. While the first two stories had current murders to be solved, the third book is mostly dealing with solving a case that is cold and secret. It was interesting to learn more about the characters and how the town came into being. I look forward to reading more of this series. And please, somebody make this into a TV series. It needs to happen.
Just completed the first 3 books in the series and loved all of them. Characters are interesting, setting in North Woods of Wisconsin in small town of misfits is unusual, and each mystery revealed more of the founding of Whispering Pines and it's inhabitants. Very unusual setting!
