Detective Zach Johnson never resented his lack of magic, although he hated that as a mundane he had no power to stop a corrupt Talent council from stealing the resources of the magical community. However, the return of the ancient ifrit guides led a blood-thirsty hummingbird to choose him as a partner. Now he can be a true equal to his shaman lover, Art Lammas, and the two of them can take on the council and the entire community if need be.Art Lammas loves Zach's enthusiasm and sense of justice, but the Talent community is much more complex than he assumes. Not only does El Paso struggle under the corrupt leadership of the council, but it stands at a place where three different traditions the Vatican-trained shamans from Mexico, the Egyptian-trained shamans of mainstream America, and the Native Peoples traditions, which are far more complex than Art can possibly describe. Art would far rather focus on solving their cases. More than that, Art fears that Talent might be the one force in the universe that could drive a wedge between them. Art would happily burn all the magic out of the world before allowing that to happen, but he may not have that choice.

Lynsey "Lyn" Gala started writing in the back of her science notebook in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. Westerns starring men with shady pasts gave way to science fiction with questionable protagonists which eventually gave in to any story with a morally ambiguous character. Even the purest heroes have pain and loss and darkness in their hearts, and that’s where she likes to find her stories. Her characters seek to better themselves and find the happy ending (or happier anyway), but it’s writing the struggle that inspires her muse. When she isn’t writing, Lyn Gala teaches in New Mexico.

She first cut her teeth on fanfic: gen, slash, het, and femslash. She prefers to focus on plot: mysteries and monsters and disasters, oh my, but sex can and does happen. Some of her stories focus on power exchange, bondage or bdsm. In her worlds, tops and bottoms are all mature, consenting adults. In fact, stories where they aren't squick her badly, so don't expect to find abuse stories in her journal.

The sixth book in the Aberrant Magic series reveals new magical realities as the reader explores El Paso--a place where three magical traditions collide.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS FIVE BOOKS IN THE SERIES

Dear Lynn Gala,

What can I say? These series really work for me and even though we are now on book six, I only love them more not less. This book is NOT a stand alone - even though this is the first book where Art and Zach are main characters, you will be confused about how the magic works in this world, about some other things as well. Especially considering that with every book the author adds the layers of sophistication in the magical systems of this universe. Initially I thought that Shamans are shamans and that's it. I thought that magic users' relationship with magic is inferior to Shamans due to what both groups can and cannot do. In the last couple of books we learned that things are not as they seemed. I also wondered after the book four ended what other challenges the author was going to bring to Kavon and Darren's relationship because to me it seemed that those two were as solid as they could get and the only significant threat that they could face now was the threat of evil ifrit coming back to this world.

So in book five the author surprised me very much in a good way. She brought in completely new couple Angel and Matt, and Angel was probably the most morally ambiguous character in the series so far but she absolutely managed to convince me that he was on the side of good guys and was a person with the ethical code even if Angel's code was a little bit , I don't know , different I guess is the best word to describe it.

And I still was not sure where the series would go in this book. Meaning I was not sure if the war with evil ifrit would finally happen or we will be seeing the lesser threat of different variety. I know I warned that this review may contain spoilers for the previous books since it is hard to talk about the book number six in the series without mentioning anything that happened in the five previous books, but I still do not want to explain who ifrit are because it is one of the major concepts in the universe of the series, so ifrit they remain for now.

Now before I started this book I accidentally noticed author's entry on her site about this book and could not avert my eyes. Apparently this is the last book for her to set up all the pieces before we will meet the first evil ifrit coming back to this world, which I was happy to read about , and this series may or may not be continued for financial reasons. That part I was less happy to read about, but whatever works for the author of course. The book does not end in the cliffhanger of any kind, you can absolutely read it and be pleased and satisfied as I was even if we never get to read about the magical war, but that is up to each reader to make this decision of course.

In this book we go back to El Paso, where we once again meet Zach and Art, whom I vaguely remember as secondary characters, but it took me some time to figure out that they made their appearance in book three, where Kavon and Darren were made painfully aware of the corrupt and incompetent magic counsel which was leading the magical community of El Paso where Zach and Art live and work.

Zach and Art are established couple, who work together as police detectives, they are deeply in love and committed to each other. Zach is a mundane, Art is a shaman and in the beginning of the book they with the help of a familiar face lead a rebellion of magical users and shamans of El Paso against their counsel, so the leadership gets shaken up a lot, and Zach and Art continue working their cases and Art tries not to get too involved with magic business.

I really liked Zach and Art, but what I really appreciated about them was that author took care to make them a different characters from Darren and Kavon, because the possibility was there to make them if not carbon copies then at least similar characters.

As I said at the first glance their magical situation is the same as our main couple, only if one looks again, one notices significant differences. Art has a lot of issues with his magic and his guide which mostly of his own making, so he is not that enthusiastic about doing a lot of things that shaman would normally did. I was not hundred percent sure as to how well trained he was due to all those issues I want to not talk about, but I certainly noticed his lack of enthusiasm. It is not that Art refuses to help with magical cases when his job asks him to, but the lack of enthusiasm was absolutely there. Zach obtained a magical guide in book three same as Darren did at the beginning of the series, but where Bennu is always eager to wreak havoc and share a lot of magic with Darren, Zach's guide is well, not, or I am guessing probably not yet.

"I've a guide of my very own, and I am amazed at the depths of my ignorance. I expected magical powers. Instead, all Pochi likes to do is help me shoot things or track things down."

"In his defense, you're equally obsessive about tracking suspects down. You deserve that hyperactive little ball of fluff."

Overall this book was definitely not giving us as much magic in action as previous books did, which was kind of neat because it dealt with the power struggle and the political implications of different magical learning systems which overlap in the United States. I mean it was not all power struggle, all the time, but it was all brewing on the pages I think. The front and center of this book was Zach and Art and their deep love for each other and while they were having some fights and disagreements the blurb clearly overstated the danger of them breaking up. I really love when we get to see committed couples dealing with their issues and this story was no exception.

I hope we will get to read next book in the series.

I actually finished this book the day I started reading it, but I refrained from reviewing because my impression of this book wasn't that positive.

This book was fine if it's only about Zach and Art and their life in El Paso. Unfortunately, I had lots of expectation for this book since I'd read book 3 where that "blood-thirsty hummingbird" first appeared.

The hummingbird was dive-bombing the male suspect. For such a small bird, he was exceptionally aggressive.
Darren had always thought of hummingbirds as cute and harmless, but he got the feeling this one had anger-management issues.
“Your guide is an angry little shit,” Lammas said.

See those quotes? Based on them, I expected to read about an exciting investigation story with enthusiastic, powerful guide kicking asses right and left. Basically, I wanted to read a story in a similar vein with Darren's story, but what I got was a story about character background (granted, they're good), an apathetic guide, and a sad mundane crime (to add insult to injury).

I saw Lyn Gala was going to release book #7 of this series (in her Facebook) and remembered that I haven't read this one yet, even if I had it for the past two years. So I jumped back into the series, hoping that I got some additional details to remember once book #7 arrives.

Well, I have to agree with my friend, Irene. With a promise of "blood-thirsty hummingbird" guide in the blurb, well this one was a HUGE let down. It was too mundane. It was "filled" with politics in the beginning (and in between a murder case), a murder case that is NOT a murder case, and well conversations between Zach and Art because apparently Art had issues. Huge ones.

It wasn't really bad, per se... it just didn't meet expectation

enjoyable

I liked these guys! The mystery was more back ground, as was the shamanic council, but I really liked the character development. There were some editing issues (like Zach being called Darren) but not unforgivable. I wonder what’s in store for them, but I believe the next book is back to Kavon and Darren.

Another instalment of this series move the setting and again introduces more new characters. While I enjoyed the introduction of the new ideas about earth and spirit guides I felt overall this was more of the fill in the gaps to bring the overall series arc forwards.

I didn't feel like the angry hummingbird was fully explained and would have liked to see more growth between Art and his cat . Not sure I trust Salma and can't help think that Kavon's distrust of Angel was a bit out the blue.

Who knows. This obviously isn't the end of the series so we will have to wait and see what happens next

When Zach and Art come up previously in the series I was curious to see what what happen with another old guide sticking his nose in. So I was excited to see this book come out. Pochi is really different from Bennu and doesn't seem to spend a lot of time in the story. There are a few clues that he has and interesting side story that I how will be explored more thoroughly later. This book focus more on Art and Zach as a couple. I also focuses heavily on Art and why he isn't really interested in being a powerful shaman. I liked watching Art finally realize some fairly obvious things about his cat and reevaluating how he sees his magic. I also like how Art reigns Zach back but at the same time looks at his own ideas about magic at the same time. This turned out to be totally different than I thought it would be but I still enjoyed it a great deal and look forward to more in the series.

While I loved the original trilogy, the later books, including this one, seem to focus less and less on the magical aspects, which in my opinion were what made the original trilogy so great. The overarching story line of these books, the return of the ifrits, warranted one scene in this book, the rest was mostly a crime story with some romance elements. I understand that these guides can't all be like Bennu, but in this book all that supposed power was not used once. I liked the characters but I wish there would have been a bit more magical action by this powerful Ifrit as well as some progress on the why they have returned.

Had to do a quick re-read to refresh my memory of these particular MC's but this was really good. They're not as quirky as Kevon and Darren but still enjoyable.

If you've enjoyed the series so far, now is not the time to stop.

The sixth entry in the Aberrant Magic series, though it follows a couple we met in book three: Art, a shaman, and his partner/lover Zach, a non-magical "mundane" who attracted a high-powered guide. The catch is, usually only shamans can bond with spirit "guides"... but these elder guides break all the rules! For those following this series, Zach's guide, Pochi, is related to Daren's guide, Bennu. These elder guides have kept away from Earth for a long time [we learned why in the earlier books], and they are re-appearing now for a reason. That is part of the over-arching mystery of the series, of course.

The world of this series has magic, but these books also are police/FBI procedurals, so we follow Art and Zach as they investigate a murder. We get to know this couple and their relationship, which we saw only briefly before. We get more information about how the magic system of this world works, and a bit about the "magical community" setup.

If you enjoy romances with magic, investigations, and a bit of old-fashioned "good versus evil," I'd highly recommend this series. You'll enjoy this entry much more if you start with the first book, Deductions.

Note: Because it's one of my favorites, if you enjoy SF M/M, I'd also point out the Claimings series by the same author. All of her books feature realistic characters and character development, well-developed backgrounds and worlds, and great writing.

Good but not as good as the others

Spoiler alert

I know this story is in the middle of the overall series story arc, but I had a hard time connecting with it. Maybe it was the way it comes in to the middle of the MC's romance and I didn't feel as involved in their story as a result. I really prefer meet the characters at the beginning of their story so that was kind of jarring. Also, the murder mystery was kind of lame. I like that they spent more time on the investigation, but it was kind of depressing.

I love that Art's guide was a cat and that Art was portrayed as being just as much at fault for their lack of relationships. Cats are wonderful if you take the time to get to know them and it was cool to see him recognize that. I do wish we had a better understanding of the Talent stuff and I'm bummed we won't get to see them train and learn more. Maybe they'll have another book?

Excited to read the next one.

I'm so glad we got a book about Zach and Art, especially after meeting them in book 3. I was so needing a book about them after that and my wish came true.

Art hates Shaman politics and being a Shaman in general; we find out why in this book. Zach has an ifrit guide and wants to rid the town of the corrupt council. That caused some conflict between the two, but I loved how they started to communicate about that and other things.

There are a few things going on in this one, such as the council problems, a murder case, stupid FBI agents, and some background stuff.

I adore these pair together, but I would have known how they ended up together. They are an already established couple, and their love and deep understanding of each other showed. They were sexy as hell, and I couldn't get enough of them.

Lyn Gala is an auto buy for me so I couldn’t wait to read this book and I was delighted that it came out early. This is the continuation of a series that has really drawn me in. These characters were introduced in a previous book and now Zac and Art have a story of their own.

I enjoy the world that the author has created and the easy way magic has been slipped into our own time. The way that the magic works and its history in the world fits well.

Strong character development is my favourite part of any book and these characters are very vivid in my mind. The characters already had a relationship with each other and I liked how their backstory was explained so that we got glimpses, without it overwhelming the current story.

I have enjoyed the entire series.

Grump McGrumpface

New complications! New characters! And a man finally accepting his Guide, while his partner’s hot-tempered hummingbird is as mysterious and pugnacious as ever. Art remained exasperating even until the end, and Zach reiterated the why he stayed with the man often - almost at hammer-to-the-head levels, but not quite. I also didn’t quite understand his hostility to the new Council guy who showed up. I thought he was great in fending off the FBI agents gunning for Art. In fact, Art was hostile to a LOT of people.

Art is indifferent, at best, about being a Shaman and he really hates Shaman politics, even if he keeps getting into the middle of the politics. I can’t decide if he doesn’t know how powerful he is or if he just doesn’t care. His guide and him don’t really communicate. Zach is new to this world and has so many questions and wants to learn everything. This causes some conflict that they are attempting to resolve by the end of the book. The murder that starts the book is mundane and tragic. While this was a fun read, I am looking forward to being back with the DC crew for the next book.

Another great addition to this series. We met Zach and Art in Divergence.

Zach is trying to understand and get his new spirit guide, Pochi, to share power and work with him. He had been a mundane, a human without magical powers or spirit guide, before Pochi "adopted" him. Now his romantic and sexual relationship with his partner, Art, wouldn't put his life in danger.

Art definitely has a love/hate relationship with his spirit guide, a cat, and those feelings extend to dealing with shamans and anything in the magical world. He'd rather just keep solving crimes with Zach and keep out of the whole magical politics that are swirling around them. Having Pochi, an ancient ifrit, pulls both of them into the politics of the upcoming conflict with the ifrit. Added to that, difficulties with the ruling local council are making both of their lives hell. This is on top of having to solve a high-profile murder case.

I enjoyed getting to know these two guys. Art was definitely the harder one to connect with, but once the reasons for his reticence regarding magic was revealed and he got his head out of his lower crevice, I could see why Zach loved him so. It was interesting starting the book with their relationship established, and it was great to watch it strengthen throughout the book. I loved how they both worked hard on keeping it healthy.

And the set up for the future war/confrontation with the ifrit is building, and we were treated to how all the different couples will have to work together. I can't wait for more.

I liked spending time with Art and Zach and seeing their relationship from the inside. Yes, of course I missed Darren and Kavon, but it was kinda nice to watch these two for a book instead. I feel like I should really re-read the previous books before I read the last one in the series, but if I wait to do that, I'll probably never get around to it, so I guess I'll end up skimming bits of the earlier books to refresh once I finally get to Durance.

Another great addition to this series!

Lyn Gala does it again, with great world-building, interesting characters, and a compelling plot. The main focus of the story is the development of the characters rather than the big magical plots of some of the earlier books, but it works wel. Highly recommended.

I liked this so much better

So we're finally beginning to see how the previous two books really do fit into the ifrit plotline, and aren't just an odd tangent. I loved that Art kept being thrown out of his comfort zone, but he always held fast to his principles and didn't opt for an easier path.

3.5 Stars I enjoyed this book but it wasn't what I was expecting. The story had a lot more of a non-magical mystery they were trying to solve and the shaman stuff took a backseat. I liked the MC's but not as much as others in this series and although we got a tiny bit of the DC gang not much. It left some open issues so I imagine this isn't the last we will see of these guys.

Texas Charm was a nice story in itself, it just didn't really touch me like the main story of Kavon/Darren does. There were also at least two name mistakes in the book that were a downer for me. Once Zach became Darren and one time Art corrected an FBI agent, but got the name wrong himself.

I'm not sure the author knows where they are going with the world building, and in book six, you want that.

When is the big conflict that keeps being teased going to come?
