A Thunder of Trumpets

Rate this book
Meticulously restored text by renowned Howard scholar Paul Herman, this is the last in a ten-book definitive chronological collection of Robert E. Howard's stories that appeared in pulp magazines like the revered Weird Tales. Howard is the creator of the international icon, Conan the Cimmerian and considered the Godfather of Sword and Sorcery.

Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."

He is well known for having created—in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales—the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

За първи път в тази поредица качеството е доста поляризирано. Вероятно се дължи на факта, че съдържа произведения, публикувани след смъртта на Хауърд, когато списанията са пускали всичко негово, което имат подръка.

"Pigeons from Hell" - един от най-добрите хоръри на Робърт Хауърд. Задължителен за феновете! - 4,5*

"A Thunder of Trumpets" -

"Witch from Hell's Kitchen" - този път изненадата е приятна, въпреки тъпото заглавие (впрочем, оригиналното е The House of Arabu, което изглежда далеч по-подходящо). Историческо фентъзи с хорър елементи, чудесно написано. - 4,5*

За съжаление слабите произведения заемат доста по-голям обем от добрите. Но все пак - средно 3*

Four stories by REH printed after his death. Possibly the four best choices to show his skill outside of his regular series, as these stories are stand-alone, not part of the Conan, Solomon Kane, or Cthulhu Mythos. "Pigeons from Hell" is considered by many to be REH's best horror story. It was written specifically in answer to a challenge from REH's pen pal H. P. Lovecraft, who said all true horror stories must be set in New England because nothing scary ever happened in the South. By coincidence, this story involves a bookish Yankee and a square jawed no nonsense Southerner.

"A Thunder of Trumpets" is a rare REH love story set in India. An American woman engaged to a British Lord meets an intriguing local who is more than he seems.

"Almuric" is REH's only scientifiction story. It's a John Carter of Mars type tale, except Esau Cairn is a brutish thug with severe psychological problems. Luckily the planet Almuric is so violent that he fits right in, fighting hyenas, monkeys, apemen, dog soldiers, and flying demons. And the girls are all really hot, including an evil queen who wants to love Esau to death.

"With from Hell's Kitchen" was originally named "The House of Arabu" which fits it far better. It's a story set in ancient Persia, filled with dancing girls and necromancers and vengeful foreign gods, all set against a displaced Nordic warrior. It's a cross between Conan and El Borak, with some suitably weird elements above and beyond the usual sword and slashery.

Really good stories, a fine ending to the Weird Works of Robert E. Howard collection.

Excellent last book in the 10 volume set reprinting all the works of Robert E. Howard in Weird Tales Magazine. Most of the stories in this volume were published after his death. Fantastic fast paced adventure stories and the novella ALURMIC, one of my personal favorites. Highly recommended
