I love this book. The pictures are done so well. They are detailed and fresh, with a soft glow about them. I don’t always enjoy rhyming books, but these have a perfect cadence and pattern to them. We have this in regular picture book format at home and it is one of our favorites. It’s a fabulous as a board book.

Definitely a family keepsake. A loving story that will warm your heart. Perfect bedtime reading on chilly winter nights. Ideal gift giving for every grandma out there. Every page is a cherished work of art. An absolute pleasure to read over and over again! My boys and I absolutely LOVE the recipe in the back, too!
Crisp white snow, clear blue sky, and roly-poly bear cubs burst onto the opening pages of this charming story, Baking Day at Grandma’s. Snuggled in wooly winter hats, mittens and boots, they march eagerly through the snow to Grandma’s cozy log cabin. Once inside they warm their toes at the fire then dance with delight, chanting “It’s baking day! It’s baking day! It’s baking day at Grandma’s!”
Grandma, a delightful full-size ursine in paisley shawl and reading spectacles, doesn’t miss a beat. She capitalizes on their youthful enthusiasm and passes out aprons before consulting her recipe book. “Wooden spoon and measuring cup, mix the batter; stir it up. Fold it gently in the pan, lick the spoon because we can.”
Told in bubbling, bouncy rhyme, the cheery tale and its sweet refrain are a song-like ode to special times with grandmothers. The text captures the simple pleasures of sipping cocoa, sketching on frosted window glass, and waltzing across a braided rug to the tunes on an old Victrola. Once the chocolate treats are baked, cooled and decorated, the cubs bundle and label the treats to give away to others. What they keep for themselves are just Grandma’s loving hugs and their memories of a special, happy day.
The illustrations are spectacular, especially the outdoor scenes of the shimmering pond reflections, snow-covered birch trees, and soft purple winter night sky. Although the interior images of brown bears in a tan cabin stirring chocolate batter may sound monochromatic, they are warm and lush with sunshine, fire glow and moonlight. Best of all, the bear cubs with tiny eyes and large upturned snouts simply exude camaraderie, glee and good cheer at every turn.
This lovely book, a collaboration between husband and wife, is a gentle, uplifting treat perfect for sharing on a warm lap or over a cup of sweet cocoa. You may even be inspired to try the delicious chocolate cake recipe included at the back of the book!
LOVE this book. Just love it. So much fun to read out loud. Squirt says it with me "Baking day! Baking day! Baking day at Grandma's!" And is there anything better?? Making a lovely mess at Grandma's house, listening to Grandma's Victrola and dancing around in aprons - that wonderful smell of baking filling the kitchen (Grandma has a gleaming wood stove, by the way.) Drinking hot cocoa and walking home in the moonlight? COME ON!!! This is the coziest book in the whole wide world. Squirt and I bake and cook together all the time, so the aprons and the timer going off, and peeking in the oven are all familiar things. Awesome book - Grandmas run out and get this quick - it's even got the recipe in the back.

Three little bears trek through the woods in the snow to have a day at baking at grandma's house. They spend the day baking, drinking hot cocoa, dance and sing the day away with grandma. After the baking is done, they wrap and bag them nicely and take them home. This book is descriptive and makes you feel like you are in the cabin baking with the family. An enjoyable read.
Charming story about three bear cubs who spend the day at Grandma's baking. The illustrations are just gorgeous, especially the final two-page spread of the cubs heading home at night with a full moon in the sky, snow on the ground, and their cozy house off in the distance. You can almost feel the chill in the air, hear the crunch of the snow beneath their feet, and smell the wood fire from their home.
This is such a fun book for any young kids who spend time baking with Grandma. The rhyme and rhythm make it very catchy. A recipe is included to make the cake that the bears make in the book.
Three little bears happily plow through the snow to Grandma's because today is baking day and Grandma is just as delighted to see them. A jolly feel-good picture book which buzzes with the dancing and prancing, hugging and cooking, and eventually the yummy eating of the special day with Grandma. Don't miss Grandma Rosie's Chocolate Cake recipe at the back! A wonderful book to share -- especially with a grandparent.
Such an adorable book! It rhymes and flows really well. The illustrations are so wonderful, adorable, and cute. There are phrases that repeat, which usually annoy me, but in this book, they don't! The repetition flows SO well. Love this book!
It's about three small adorable bears going over to Grandma's house to bake. It was odd they were walking home from grandma's "under the moon" because why would you let three small children/bears walk alone at night? That's the only thing that concerned me. Otherwise it's a great book!
Three little bears bundle up and adventure to Grandma's house for a fun baking day! This story is about three little cubs who feel loved and excited to spend quality time with their grandmother. I thought it was a cute story about the special bond between grandmothers and their grandchildren. Age Appropriateness: Kindergarten-2nd grade.
"Flip the pan, and out it pops!/Cut in squares and frost the tops./Add some sprinkles, wrap each one,/tie a ribbon, nearly done." Three little bears travel in the snow to bake with their grandma. This is a short, sweet picture book that is a perfect December read (with nods to cold weather and gift giving and time together with family).
Three little bears visit their grandma to have a baking day. Has a nice rhyme scheme that conveys the activities and process of baking a cake nicely, without feeling g forced. The repetition of the lines “It’s baking day! It’s baking day! It’s baking day at grandma’s!” captures the excitement of young children getting to do something special with a loved one.
BAKING DAY AT GRANDMA'S is a perfect snuggle book for any day, not just a wintry one. And, as always, Christopher Denise's artwork is absolutely gorgeous. This is a book that belongs in every home library :)
Adorable illustrations paired with simple story in rhythmic chant with a rollicking refrain. Not a ton of story, but a ton of heart as the cubs spend time with their grandma and learn to love the things she loves (and to share that love with others.)
This book came as an Imagination Library copy to my daughter and she loved it. The story and the illustrations are just absolutely perfect! Three little bears go to grandmas house to bake a cake. So cute! I love the aspect of spending time with grandparents!
Great children's book! On the very last page, there is a recipe for Grandmas Rosie's Chocolate Cake. This book would be fun to read to students and or a group of kids and then baking the cake with them afterwards.
The illustrations and the rhyming make this book an engaging book. I liked that it showed a grandparent relationship. They included a recipe in the back of the book for the cake the bears made which was a nice little extra .
This month's book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is so cute - I especially loved the illustrations! Three little bears trek through the snow to spend a lovely cozy afternoon at Grandma's house baking chocolate cake.
Three bear cubs spend a snowy wintry day at their grandma's house baking sweet treats, and enjoying their time with their grandma in this rhyming tale. Grandma Rosie's Chocolate Cake recipe is provided at the back of the book.
