When a tribe of Sasquatches flee from a mysterious curse, they take refuge in Hugo’s home, Widdershins Cavern. These new Sasquatches look a bit . . . odd. For example, they all have unicorn horns on their heads! Always open to meeting new creatures, Hugo befriends one of these strange squidges, Nobb. Nobb offers to escort Hugo though the North Woods so that Hugo can attend Boone’s birthday party. Having never been inside a Human house, Hugo finds the experience confusing and somewhat disastrous. Just when it looks like Hugo may have ruined Boone’s birthday, they set out on a mission to solve the troubling curse in Nobb’s cavern.

Just as the previous 2 books in this series, I read it aloud to my 3 kids (10, 6 & 4). I did not enjoy this as much as the other 2. The character interactions seemed lacking in comparison, the whole crypto hunting is getting a bit old (big mystery creature, build up to something scary, oh look it’s no big deal after all) and it bothers me that the books seem to be just skimming the surface of issues we are facing today. For example, this time around it was making assumptions about the squatchicorns. Yes, we find out the assumptions are wrong but I wish Hugo would have been called out on the fact that it’s WRONG to make assumptions about others. I know I’m asking a lot of a children’s novel but there it is.
Aside from that, my kids still enjoyed it and look forward to the 4th installment when it comes out. And I’m still happy to have a book series that captivates all 3 of them.
The third in this series. I wasn't as engaged with the characters in this book. Hugo heads for Boone's birthday party with a new friend, Nogg. Prior to the party, Hugo and his family met Nogg and his sister when they had to flee from their caves. Curiously, all of these sasquatches have a horn on their head. It's revealed when someone finally asks why. The three friends set off on an adventure to solve the mystery of the caves collapsing and to find Nogg's belongings that were left behind. They do solve it and everything wraps up by the end. This one felt stilted to me. The plotline made sense but was not fleshed out with the character connections seen in the first two books.
I enjoyed this sequel, but not as much as the earlier books. For starters, it didn't leave me salivating for Sasquatch treats. Hugo and his new friend, Nogg, head off to Boone's birthday party. The few cultural misunderstandings are hilarious. Boone is crowned king for the day and commands his Sasquatch friends to return to Nogg's cavern. Nogg and his community were forced to leave it because it was haunted. Together they find out what was causing the strange occurrences.
Cute illustrated chapter book series about a sasquatch and a human boy who are friends. A little mystery, magic and adventure. Perfect for the K-2 classroom read aloud crowd. My 4 yr old has been liking them as well.
I randomly picked up the first book in this series as a read-aloud for my 5 year old, and once I saw the author, I knew it was going to be good! (I've taught Ellen Potter's Slob to middle schoolers.) My outdoor and fantasy loving son has been eating this series up!
My kids are really enjoying these chapter books. I am reading them aloud. I would say they are about a 2nd/3rd grade reading level. They have some pictures in them and they are cute! I like that the story isn’t the same lay out in each book and there is a little bit of adventure!
This one was okay. It was the least best of the three. Also, this was the first one that did not have a preview of the next book at the end. So, maybe this is the last one.
