CW: Parental Loss

A unique middle-grade fantasy that explores themes of loss, balance, and nature

Clarence learns there are things worse than death. Being born in a world without color, he has rarely had to deal with loss. Ever since the Reaper in the Tree blocked the path to paradise, humans didn’t die, they became sick and grew weak until reapers had no choice but to lead them down the long road around the End.

His father had been sick for a long time, and knowing the perils of the End, his mother offered years of her own life to the reaper tasked with guiding Clarence’s father, in exchange for more time in the mortal realm.

Clarence, with the help of his best friend Wakoba, his sister Jessi, and the once powerful Red Reaper, journey through the in-between to remove the Reaper in the Tree from his makeshift throne and restore balance to the world.

So, yeah, I know it's not always kosher to rate your own book but so far the Goodreads community hasn't minded. For those unfamiliar with my ratings, I like to give a kind of letter from the author in the review section so people can gain a bit of personal insight into what my work means to me.

Beds Are For Flowers was originally going to be a middle-grade book. The main character was going to be nine and his father was going to turn into a tree in the end. I had this beautiful idea in my mind that becoming one with nature was the highest level of enlightenment a person could achieve and Clarence would be able to climb his father's tree every day and feel connected to him.

I didn't go in this direction. Since the book deals with reapers, monsters, and death I thought it might be better to make Clarence thirteen. I put a lot of thought into what makes life so beautiful, and I know even a book couldn't come close to an answer, but when I think of beauty I obviously jump at low hanging fruit like color and sound. So, when the world lost its life in this story, color and sound were among the first casualties. I imagined a gray, twisted, shell of the world we all know, sort of inspired by Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi "you paved paradise, put up a parking lot.”

Balance is one of the main themes in this book. Paradise and the mortal realm are two sides of the same coin and when one gets sick the other suffers. This is going to make me sound like such a hippy but I guess I wrote this as an ode to the innocence of nature. It doesn't try to be beautiful, it just is, and we turn our backs on it too often for our own convenience, preferring a road to a forest.

I hope this insight makes some sense. I'm worried it sounds like a ramble.

Anyway, I hope you like the book and I'm always interested in more ARC readers.

Thanks for your interest.

A lovely little diverse fantasy! I found it a little confusing and complex at times, but that might just be because of the fact that I have one brain cell, but it was cute <3

When I was first starting out on my own my oldest brother gave me a piece of advice. He said to me ‘You either take the bull by the horns or you fall by the wayside. The choice is yours.’

I’ve always remembered that and this book has a way of reflecting the same for middle-graders as well as adults.
In an enchanting and imaginative way it tells the story of inner fear, faith, believing in oneself, and positive outcomes when the right choices are made in life.

I won this book in a giveaway on GR and truly enjoyed reading it. Highly recommended!

This book gave me some serious Wizard of Oz feels in the beginning and I’m so here for it. Such an interesting story like nothing I’ve read before. I did get a bit confused with the reapers, who was bad, who was good but in the end I decided good and bad is too black and white.

This was definitely a cute, unique read. Though I did get a little bored with it, I felt like the author did a great job with differentiating the voices of the characters and portraying a thought provoking plotline dealing with humanity, family, and death. It was an interesting middle grade read, and I would definitely recommend it.

A heartwarming read about death, nature, and confronting one's fears. A tad confusing at times due to similar names of the adults, but with distinct characters and some vivid imagery.

Beds Are for Flowers, R. K. Gold’s newest thought provoking fantasy adventure is amazing. Both the language and storyline are so delightful you’ll want to read this one straight through. I did. Grabbed from the first page by the world and characters, it made me want to know more even before the adventure began. That is the enticement of a well spun fantasy world and R. K. Gold spins us wondrous worlds from his imagination.

Clarence lives in a world of grays. His world once held true colors, before his parents’ time. Grass may be faintly greenish white at times, but mostly grey and brittle. A hint of pale blue might brush the sky somewhere on occasion, but rarely. They say there is color in the big cities where a lot of people live, lots of life, more colors. No one really travels to the city though. The roads are too dangerous.

Dangers abide in this world since the Reaper in the Tree has blocked the way to Ganedyn Now when one dies, they must walk the road to The End. If one is fortunate a Reaper arrives to guide them. Those people are much more likely to reach The End. It takes strength to walk this road.

With the Reaper in the Tree blocking the way in or out of Ganedyn, Clarence’s world has lost its balance. Creatures from The End enter the world, some more dangerous than others, but all a plague to the humans that live here. The plague creeps farther the longer the Tree is blocked.

Clarence father has fallen ill. His Reaper call at their home for him daily. The family clutches to his life with everything they have, but there are few bargains that interest a Reaper. Clarence mother has already given years of her life to keep her husband a few days longer. She won’t allow her children to do the same.

Here begins a desperate quest, to remove the Reaper from the Tree, and clear the much closer and natural way to Ganedyn. This is the only way to spare their father the dangerous walk to The End. Clarence is the one appointed the task. His younger sister and best friend accompany him. His father’s Reaper agrees to guide them. This road holds its own perils well before they reach the Tree and their battle even begins.

Will this small band of teens be able to restore the balance to their world? What evils will they face on the way? Will they all survive the battle ahead of them? Get your copy of Beds Are for Flowers today and find out!

I actually thought I was going to hate this when I started it. I normally don't read middle grade or fantasy, they're too fake and can't keep my attention. The subject matter in this book was so fascinating though I couldn't put it down. It tackled deep topics for children but with a gentleness that made it easy to read through.

What a great and beautiful book. I cannot say how much I enjoyed reading this.

This is a story about different worlds, death, life, nature and colours. I started reading this without knowing anything about this story and I think this was the best way for me to enjoy it.

It is a beautifully written, short, Middle Grade book that doesn't feel like a Middle Grade book while reading it. I definitely recommend to give this one a try, it's just that good! Loved it 💜

5 out of 5 stars

Since Beds Are For Flowers is a middle grade read, I had the joy of getting to read this with my eldest son. We both absolutely loved this read and highly recommend it.

R.K. Gold is a indie author I met through BookTube. He has always been so inspirational and really has a way with words. When I heard he had started a middle grade series I knew I had to get my hands on it.

The middle grade world is absolutely saturated with fantasy. Making it extremely hard for an author to release something unique into the mix. Dare I say R.K. did just that! He amazed me with the world of Ganedyn.

Beds Are For Flowers is a beautiful story, with sensational characters that will take your breath away. The thought of being born into a bland, color-less world where each and everyday you are worried for your loved ones. Knowing, by facing your fears you may be able to set the pieces of the puzzle back together. Changing things for the best out come possible.

We were hooked! Eager to find out if Clarence, Jesse and Wakoba succeeded in their journey.

I often say that indie authors write some incredible gems. I can't stress enough how important it is to support indie authors. Trust me, you may find your next top favourite read.

Be sure to check out this series by R.K. Gold!

And of course thank you all for reading.

3.5! I really loved the interpretation and messages surrounding dying and the fear that that creates. Some portions of the story were a little confusing for me and threw me a bit, but I really enjoyed the journey through the inbetween and the overall message about how important having balance in all of our lives is.

I won a free copy of this book!

This genre isn't usually my cup of tea but what a unique concept. I wasn't sure how a middle grade book would be able to handle subjects like death, the afterlife, and grim reapers but this book is really gentle with the subject matter. It's a magical journey where death isn't feared but loss of life is. They're fighting for the world, they're fighting for being human.

All the characters have a very pronounced motivation so I was never left askign what's the point or why is it happening?

I really hope this becomes a series. I would love to see how this adventure to the in-between continues to change the main characters and the relationship between reapers and humans.

The battle between nature and progress was beautifully illustrated and the quest to save the father gave me a great opportunity to explore the world.

I recently finished Beds Are For Flowers by R.K. Gold as part of a Goodreads giveaway for my honest review.
Beds Are For Flowers drops us into a version of post-apocalyptic Earth, with more of a fantasy base to it. No zombies or plagues in this one. Can you say refreshing? This one is all on the human race and the inadvertent result of destroying the beauty of the planet. The world is grey and dismal. The door to Ganedyn, the colorful and majestic afterword, closed by The Reaper in the Tree who felt that mankind had become too selfish, industrious and neglectful of the beauty of nature. The reapers, once revered by those on earth as a guide to Ganedyn at the end of their days on earth, now feared and avoided for, now with the door closed few humans got into Ganedyn and were left to wander around The End in search of the afterlife.
Monsters, despair and darkness draw humans to The End, attempting to ensure no safe passage to the beauties of Ganedyn. So when Clarence’s father drew closer to death and the Reaper came to collect him, Clarence and his sister Jessi are determined to ensure a passage for their father. A curious neighbor and his heroic prompting encourage Clarence and Jessi to believe that they can destroy the Reaper in the Tree, reopen the door to Ganedyn and restore color to this pathetic world. They head along with an ex-reaper, and Clarence’s overly cautious best friend Wakoba to save both this world and the next. With the age range recommended for the book, I wasn’t quite sure how reapers and afterlife would play out, but I was more than pleasantly surprised. Passing on to Ganedyn is beautiful and reverend and the thought provoking nature of the book has the potential to inspire youth to preserve and protect the beauty that we have on this planet. Undertones of human progression destroying what is naturally beautiful on Earth are powerful and energizing and this epic quest, while short packs a big punch for action and entertainment. This definitely could play out quite nicely on screen as well. A very good read that will hopefully reach the born leaders of the next generation who hopefully will take a long look on the impact we as humans have on the world and fight to change it. Happy reading bookworms!

I really liked this. It was quick and concise. The perfect middle grade with just the right amount of world building and emotional pull for young readers. Excellent pacing and writing style. The narration was spot on. I hear it's going to have a sequel, and I'm interested in where it will go because the book wrapped up nicely.

I don't have any issues with this book because it was perfect for the target market. On a personal note, I had a little trouble distinguishing the two boys. We only spend a day with them, so there's not a lot of room to show what makes the character tick, though I did have a solid impression of Jesse and the father. I also got side tracked at the very end and realized the neighbor reaper and the red reaper were different. I don't think I comprehended everything I was supposed to. I'd benefit from a reread in the future. This isn't a criticism of the story. I've been having trouble focusing this month. I've been listening to the last book in the Mortal Instruments series for a month and I'm only 100 pages in because it just can't hold my attention while I'm in this state. All that to credit this book for capturing my attention and allowing me to finish something in a few days.

If you liked the first 2 books in the Percy Jackson series, I think you'll love this. I say the first two books because I didn't like the last three and think this book was better. There's my tea.

I also want to add that I was able to vividly picture the world and the author managed that without info-dumping a ton of description. The storytelling had a nice balance between description and dialogue. This will appeal more to plot driven readers than character driven readers, but there is enough character details to make the reader care. I think anymore of anything would overwhelm a young reader, so, though as an adult I may have wanted more depth, the book is a 5 star read for the target market, and I highly recommend it.

Middle grade books are meant to keep adults engaged, but 28yo was. So pick it up.

I really enjoyed the book, wont deny I struggled a little to get into the story at first but that didn't last long at all. Wasn't long and I was nose deep into the story, kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting and waiting to know what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the fantasy of it and it gave me similar vibes to a movie I once watched called bridge to terabithia. Gave it 5 stars!! 🥰 I really look forward to the next book!

This is a 166 page book made up almost entirely of dialogue and it still took me over a month to read it.

The book is repetitive, relies heavily on whatever is convenient at the time, is inconsistent in its characters, plot, and world rules, and the author never shows but always tells the reader what they should be thinking. There is an entire chapter of the main characters just summarizing what is good about each of them instead of the author showing any of these positive traits through actions.

Further, the author feels the need to recap every other chapter about things that just happened, and, every time Gold wants to build tension Clarence suddenly can't move. This paralysis happens four times in a book that clocks in at under 200 pages and several of those times it starts and stops for no good reason.

Add in Gold's incredibly choppy, often confusing, writing style with language use that is inconsistent with the time period/setting/tone of the rest of the book and you've got the recipe for one disappointing read.

I loved this book!

First I would like to thank the author, R.K Gold for the generous gift of this book for free! And also for the amazing friendship, we now have!

My favourite part of the book was the world in itself. It reminded me of the giver but with a hint of scythe as well. The way R.K describes the world is amazing, he truly knows how to use colours!

It was easy to extinguish the characters. My favourite characters where Jessie and Wakoba for sure!

The plot was driven easily by the characters and the world, which made the book easy to read and also quick to read.

I definitely recommend this book to people who love books like the giver and scythe.
Beds Are For Flowers is definitely a book you should give a try!

I can't wait till I get to read the second book!

This book is definitely one of those books that help you easily visualize the world, and every setting the characters are in.
Every single detail in the colors, and the admiration in nature was vivid, and perfectly executed.
It really will make you take a second to look around and appreciate all of the things surrounding you every single day that you take for granted.
Pictures, Flowers, Dirt, stars, and the vibrant colors we see every day are picked apart in this book and really noticed. Being someone who's obsessed with flowers, nature, and parks overall I really loved that more than anything. I also really enjoyed the synopsis and plot of the story it was pretty damn refreshing and unique.
Honestly you can grab this book and from the first page it sucks you into the world, to where you can't put it down.. And when you do you'll look around at the world a little differently.

The characters were easily identified as the scared one, the curious one that underestimates their self, and the brave one (Jessi had to be a Gryffindor I mean really .. lol)

To summarize this book the earth is connected to a world of reapers who reside in a place called Ganedyn.
But reapers in this world don't come along with the darkness we're so used to associating them with. These reapers are celebrated, they're full of color, life, and balance.
The tree connecting the two worlds is called the in between.
The Earth and Ganedyn have a steady system of life.
However, as always us humans fucked up the flow. Some of the reapers saw the human race as greedy and inconsiderate with the world we so freely live in.
Taking for granted all we have so easily when it comes to the nature and beauty the reapers sustain.
(Sound familiar? lol).
So one of the reapers literally said fuck y'all. And stopped the flow.
He stayed inside the in between daring anyone to cross him.
In the end no one did. He was too powerful, and as a result the world lost almost all of its color and the only way to get to Ganedyn was through the end.
which is not where anyone wanted to be.
That part of world was full of monsters and deception.
However The End was the only way to get to Ganedyn at this point, which is where you must travel to once you life ends.
So when our MC clarence's father is too ill, and would soon have to travel through the dangers of The End to get to Ganedyn.. Clarence, his best friend Wakoba, and Jessi (His sister) all take it upon themselves to try the impossible.
Defeat the reaper in the in between and get their world back to the way it should be.

I loved every second of this book. I connected to all of the characters and how they felt especially Wakoba's cautiousness lol, Jessi's braveness, and Clarences determination. All together they were pretty unstoppable. They listened to each other, provided understanding to all the emotions through out the journey and made sure to look out for one another.
I really wish "The End" was explored a little more in depth.
I would've liked to see some more of those monsters lurking about and their method of torment lol.
If this book was a little longer I have no doubt R.K would've easily came up with even more terrifying creatures. All in all I can't wait to see what else they write.

This middle grade book about balance and finding hope amongst fear was actually a very interesting read. I enjoyed how easy it was to feel for Clarence and the battle he fought both internally and with the antagonist. The topics of death and reapers addresses in this book may be a little difficult for younger or more sensitive readers. However, I do believe that a reader that is prepared and comfortable with the topics would enjoy this book immensely. I really did love the discussion about balance that Clarence has with The Pit. And I appreciated that there was both fear and hope, light and dark, life and death in the book.
