Dragon Hunter #2

Day of the Dragon / Wolf's Mate

Rate this book
TWO FULL NOVELS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! Fans of Lyndsay Sands and Gena Showalter will love this fiery paranormal romance from a New York Times bestselling author about a dragon shifter who finds his soul mate in the most unlikely place. Also includes WOLF'S MATE by Celia Kyle.

With dragons like him, who needs enemies?

Real scholars know that supernatural beings don't exist. But the moment I meet Archer Andras of the Storm Dragons, all my academic training goes out the window. Thanks to Mr. Tall, Dark, And Infuriating, I'm learning that I really should worry about those things that go bump in the night. . . and that dragons like Archer are 100 percent pure trouble.

Now I'm caught in the middle of a war. On one side is Archer. On the other is his twin brother. And I am the key to translating an ancient text that could bring balance-or deadly ruin-to our world. But none of that is as dangerous as the seriously sexy sparks between Archer and me. He's too tempting to be real. Too gorgeous to trust. And when it comes to dragons, there's no smoke without deadly fire.

Includes the novel WOLF'S MATE by Celia Kyle: When Abby Carter is threatened by an anti-shifter organization, werewolf shifter Declan Reed will have to convince her that there's no safer place in the world than in the arms of a big bad werewolf.

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialogue or love scenes in the software book, Katie swiftly resolved to switch to fiction, where she could indulge in world building, tormenting characters, and falling madly in love with all her heroes.

Two years after she started writing novels, Katie sold her first romance, Noble Intentions. More than thirty books followed during the years after Noble's publication. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages, been recorded as audiobooks, received several awards, and placed on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. She also writes for the young adult audience as Katie Maxwell, and for the mystery world as Kate Marsh.

Katie lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dogs, and can often be found lurking around online.

Man, I was really hoping I would enjoy this book more than I did. For a while, in the middle of the book, I really thought this was going to be a four star read, but the convoluted beginning and mess of a climax pushed this book into the, “it should have been great, but it wasn’t” range.

I read the first book in this series, MEMOIRS OF A DRAGON HUNTER, and thought the paranormal world MacAlister started building was confusing. I know creating a whole paranormal world is difficult, so I was really excited to get more clarity in book two. Weirdly, DAY OF THE DRAGON not only stood completely alone, but it also had basically no correlation with book one, at all. So, good news, you can totally start the series with this book, bad news, this book seemed more like a spinoff or an origin story of the first book rather than the next book in a correlated series.

This story is about a relatively normal woman with unique hair and eye pigmentation (I couldn’t really picture what she looked like in my head, which bugged me) and a dragon master at odds with his brother, trying to stop the murders occurring in his territory. This book gave me so many mixed feelings because I really enjoyed parts of the story, but other parts didn’t work at all.

What I liked: I appreciated the heroine’s character development. Thaisa (the heroine) started as a relatively insecure and seemingly timid character, but her relationship with Archer (the hero) bolstered her strength and self-confidence. I also appreciated Thaisa and Archer’s chemistry, especially their sexual chemistry, that was fun! Archer was sweet and considerate of Thaisa and some of their banter was top notch. This book really had all the makings of a good read. Especially in the middle of the book when Thaisa and Archer were getting to know each other as mates.

Here were my biggest hang-ups: There were SO MANY dangling plot lines. The heroine’s daily journaling habit? Mentioned just enough to intrigue the reader, then never mentioned again. (It almost seemed like the author got her books confused because journaling was a big part of book one) The big, bad boss, who doles out verbal abuse and death threats? He just walked out the door, left, and that was the last of him. The nerdy yet adorable shop assistant Jamie? Where did he go? I have no idea. The heroine’s best friend? Never calls her bestie back and is out of the story. The heroine’s profession? She is now jobless, which is fine, I guess, but her talent was such a large part of her characterization, I wanted to know what she was going to do next.

The ending, where I was hoping to get all of my burning questions answered, felt rushed and I wasn’t satisfied at all. I thought the villain came out of nowhere and the weird prophecy like storyline lacked lead up.

Overall, I honestly really enjoyed parts of this book because I love Katie MacAlister’s voice as a writer. She’s witty and hilarious, but this paranormal world needs major work to become a cohesive series. I am still hopeful this will all lead to a fantastic, five-star, book three so I am going to keep my fingers crossed.

Katie MacAlister has a few successful dragon shifter series under her belt. Her combination of sexy romance combined with action and laughs has made for some enjoyable reads for me in the past, and I’m happy to say that this new release, Day of the Dragon, delivers another equally entertaining escape.

Sibling rivalry is taken to extremes when it comes to brothers Archer and Hunter. A tragic family history resulted in the two brothers being separated at birth and now they’re arch-enemies leading rival outcast dragon clans. Archer leads the Storm Dragons and his ranks have been decimated lately. He blames Hunter and his Shadow Dragons and they have been unable to come to a truce.

Both brothers want to get their hands on a medieval manuscript that purports to describe an ancient dragon artefact, but in their way is Thaisa, a medieval scholar who works at the antique shop that has the treasure, and the only person who can decipher the encrypted text. Thaisa recently had a chance encounter at a bar with a man she’s dubbed ‘Mr. Tall, Dark and Infuriating’. When that man, who happens to be Archer, shows up after hours at the shop to steal the manuscript, Thaisa recognizes him. Suddenly she’s caught up in a supernatural struggle with dragons and demons and sprites – oh my! Can she solve the mystery of the manuscript and bring about a happy ending for the brothers, and an HEA of her own?

I know to expect a low angst, laugh-out-loud reading experience with Katie MacAlister and that’s exactly what you’ll get here, with some interesting world building and a mystery that gets solved over the course of the story. There are some fun twists and turns, some unexpected surprises and of course, a sexy romance for Archer and Thaisa. The existence of supernatural beings is a shock Thaisa gets over reasonably quickly considering she’s fully human. She doesn’t seem at all wigged out by being attracted to a dragon shifter, and once Archer believes her to be his mate, he’ll do anything to keep her safe and protected, a difficult task since there is more than one enemy after the manuscript – and Thaisa’s cryptography skills.

Thaisa has a condition, poliosis, that results in streaks of white through her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. She knows she looks different and she has some self-esteem issues when it comes to her appearance, ones that Archer goes out of his way to dispel. He’s attracted to all of her – her looks, her brain, her fiery spirit. There’s plenty of banter between them that’ll make you smile, plus Thaisa’s internal dialogue is a hoot. The story is told in an interesting way, with Thaisa’s point of view being in first person, and Archer’s in third. The switch is a little jarring at first, but it makes a clear distinction between their thoughts.

Like any good story, there are secondary characters with important parts to play. Thaisa has a best friend, Laura, and Laura has recently introduced her to Bree. There’s something a little odd about Bree (though she’s very funny) and she turns out to have a significant role later on. Archer’s feud with Hunter heats up when both want Thaisa’s help, though Hunter will try to get it in more devious ways. Archer relies on his best friend and cousin Milo but Thaisa isn’t sure that Milo’s not up to something for his own benefit. Thaisa’s boss is a jerk, one who threatens Thaisa’s grandmother if she doesn’t get the manuscript back after it’s stolen. Thaisa will do anything to keep her grandmother from harm so she too has her own agenda. Everyone has secrets to be uncovered.

Solving the mystery of the manuscript takes some ingenuity, skill, and luck. There’s a lot of action scenes, even some sword fighting (!) and plenty of magic to get to the happy ending everyone deserves. Archer and Thaisa have a fun, sexy and exciting partnership and I plan to read more of the Dragon Hunter series in the future. One last note – the book available for purchase currently includes the novel Wolf’s Mate by Celia Kyle, a two for one special. They each take up approximately half of the total length of both the digital edition and the paperback.

Day of the Dragon by Katie MacAlister is book Two in the Dragon Hunter Series. This is the story of Archer and Thaisa. I have read the previous book (and Loved it!) but feel you wish to make this a standalone you can. Thaisa doesn't have self confidence in her looks due to her unique look which has lead to looks and comments. But what she does strive in and have confidence in is studying ancient artifacts, becoming a scholar. Archer is a dragon shifter who has been at war with his twin bother for several years, each killing or harming the other members of their tribe. Now, he thinks he has found a way to end the war which leads him to Thaisa. Archer never really planned or thought of finding his mate during this time but that is what Thaisa is turning out to be. Thaisa with her low confidence didn't think someone like Archer would be attracted to her but he is making her see that she is more than she thought. I liked their banter, which kept things somewhat light.
In addition to the great book, there is a 2nd book added called WOLF'S MATE by Celia Kyle, which I also very much enjoyed.

Day of the Dragon is the second book in a series but can easily be read as a stand alone (I purposely read the first book just to be sure). There is a novella from Celia Kyle as well.

Day of the Dragon was an enjoyable fun read. I like MacAlister's books are always like this. If you have ever picked up one of her books you know the females are going to be kick but and the males will be antiquated and have to adopt to their modern woman.

Celia Kyle's book was okay I remember reading one of her past books and enjoying it. This was okay. I was bored and really didn't care for the relationships.

Three stars from me. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

Ok I admit the cover caught my eye and then I thought oo a Dragon book so count me in. I realise now that this contains two stories and indeed the first isn’t the beginning of its series which I hadn’t expected.
Day of the Dragon 3 stars
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Ms MacAlisters dragon books in the past but unfortunately this story just didn’t really grab me. Perhaps the slow start or indeed the crazy storyline about dragons, demons and constellations just failed to really reach out to me. I guess sometimes no matter how you want to become immersed it just doesn’t happen. The heroine Thaisa is bright, interesting but unfortunately has hang ups about her appearance. Archer is well just sex mad and I got very bored of his constant need to touch, taste etc and indeed it didn’t seem to matter who was listening. The suspense and general plot felt all over the place but it’s saving grace is the female character Bree who added greatly to the mayhem and madness that fuelled this story.
Wolfs Mate 4 stars
Ok the second offering is something I’d already read so please check before purchasing that you don’t own it. Ms Kyle offers the first in her Shifter Rogue series and it’s essentially Cougar shifter Abby caught up in shenanigans concerning an organisation targeting our furry friends out there. Now luckily a crack team of shifters are investing which puts Abby right in Wolf shifter Declan’s sights. Perhaps not as quirky as some books by this author but I definitely enjoyed this one as it felt credible and allowed the shifters to be ‘other’.
So if brutal I definitely enjoyed one story far more than the other so struggled with a fair rating but my voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

*I received this book from NetGalley In exchange for my honest opinion.

This is the second book?! What?! I never would have guessed just by reading it.

Thaisa is a little different. She has a rare genetic gene that has caused her face to look different, so she’s spent my years dealing with the looks, name calling, etc. She threw herself in to the one thing that made her happy, studying ancient artifacts, becoming a scholar. While out with friends one night, her lack of self acceptance becomes clear, making statements about how the GQ male would never notice her. Well isn’t she in for a surprise....

Archer is the master dragon of his tribe. For hundreds of years, he and his twin have been fighting each other, killing off members of each other’s tribe. Now that a leaf has been discovered, it may hold the key to finally put the feud to rest. But first, he had to get his hands on it. And what a pleasant surprise that he has to go through a delightful mortal to do just that.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I think it was Thaisa’s quirky banter and babbling that kept me turning the pages considering you never knew what was going to come out of her mouth. Don’t get me wrong, the story was just as captivating, including watching how it all unfolded. But this character was just....refreshing for me for some reason.

I’ll admit that there were a few issues regarding the story for me, but they weren’t a make or break issue. After all, this IS a PNR involving Dragons, Demons and Spirits. 😁

I received a complimentary of this eBook from the author, publisher, and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Thaisa is threatened by her boss Edgar and sells an ancient manuscript to a man who is really a dragon, her world gets placed in danger and turned upside-down when the dragons and other dark forces comes for her. Will she be able to save herself or will she be taken by the dragons? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a pretty good action-packed paranormal romance novel and my first novel that I have read by Katie MacAlister. If you enjoy Dragon stories, romance and action then be sure to check this book out when it officially releases to bookstores and wherever books are sold online on March 5, 2019.

First off, this is a duology, with one...book...too long for a novella... written by another author.

Color me a bit stunned. Usually MacAlister's humor runs to the absurd with a heaping dose of dingbat. Nothing wrong with that I guess but dingbat tends to annoy more than amuse me after a point.

There is no dingbat. The h is intelligent, mildly freaked out but deciding to run with it. The H is intelligent and other than brief glimpses of the self-absorption that wyverns tend to have, is mostly just... a frustrated...dragon? The story is good.

Issues are minor - I still don't get the dragon hunter bit, the heroine utters the word "hoo" a few times after nookie, and her sleezeball boss isn't dealt with at all.

The second novel - Wolf's Mate, by Celia Kyle - is unrelated. It's hard to describe really...maybe like the Furry United Coalition combined with a serious romantic suspense. There's some humor, a lot of suspense, a romance, and well... The h is brainy, has had bad experiences with a anti-shifter organization, and stumbles across something while doing an audit of a company. The H's team is on stakeout of said company after a tip, and notices her behavioral change. They also note the owner is coming back along with armed men. The H goes to her rescue and blows the mission. It's pretty much downhill from there.

The H was destined to be his pack's next alpha but he killed the alpha at the age of 15, after finding him abusing a young shifter female. This - the necessity of his running - did confuse me. After all, isn't it the usual method for the alpha to get ousted by his replacement? Usually violently? In any case, he apparently became a contract killer with a conscience in that he wouldn't take out anyone who didn't deserve it...until he got caught and found himself ordered to join SHOC (it's the acronyms that remind me of the other series, really) or else. So apparently his inner wolf spotted the h and decided she was his, thus breaking cover, and all sorts of hijinks later.

Archer started the Storm dragons while his brother, Hunter had started the Shadow dragons.

Archer and his cousin go after the Raisa Medallion, not knowing if it's real or not and not knowing if what they think about only a demon hunter or a demon being able to wield it is true. They break into the place and leave the money for their item only to get caught by Thaisa who works there. Thaisa and Archer have an intense first meeting and then he leaves with his item.

Thaisa works at a place that sells off antiques but her boss is a total ass. So when she sells off something and even gets a great price for it, her boss completely freaks out and threatens her with bodily harm if she doesn't get it back. Before Thaisa knows what's happening, she and her friend are kidnapped for only for a short period of time and Archer comes to her rescue. After that she and Archer get a lot closer. Watching Archer try and figure out what his brother is doing, going after the Medallion and get closer to Thaisa was a lot of fun. There's so much going on that I never got bored even for a few pages which was nice and kept the story going for me.

When they finally do find the medallion, it wasn't anything like I thought it would be but it was good and surprising. I really liked all the secrets that came to life at the end of this book and there were quite a few of them but it all made sense. It was a fun ride waiting to see if Thaisa could decipher the text, find the medallion and fall for Archer. Archer's brother, Hunter is also a big part of this story and he turned out to be so much more than I thought he was in the beginning. This entire story was fun to read.

Disclosure: I received this book for free via NetGalley but all opinions are my own.

This is a two book deal. The first story is Day of the Dragon by Katie MacAlister. Archer Andras is head of the Storm dragons and at war with his twin brother Hunter who is head of the demons. They a both looking for an ancient manuscript leaf which once translated will change the balance between the two clans. Archer purchases the leaf and hires Thaisa, a scholar of ancient texts to translate it. Archer must protect Thaisa as his brother tries to get both the manuscript and Thasia. Along the way, Archer realizes that Thasia is his mate. She translates the leaf and realizes that both brothers must come together to create a balance.
I liked this story. I especially loved Bree. She was a riot throughout the story constantly confusing Thasia with the things she says. There are other secondary characters that add to this story and make it interesting. There is a twist towards the end of the story that explains the conflict between the brothers. This story can be read without having read the other Dragon books. I look forward to more books in this series.
Wolf’s Mate by Celia Kyle is the second story in this book. Abby Carter is a cougar shifter who is an accountant. While doing the books, she stumbles on information that the corporation is supplying funds to an anti-human organization. Now her life is at risk as they try to get back the information she downloaded and how much does she know. Declan Reed is a werewolf who works for the Shifter Operations Command. They too are watching the corporation. Declan realizes that Abby is his mate and does everything he can to protect her from the organization.
I enjoyed this story. It was suspenseful and the characters interesting. It was a quick read and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Who doesn’t love a good dragon tale? MacAlister delivers again with another gut-busting, action packed dragon hunter novel to add to her back-list. Where book 1 gave us a human thrust into the role of a dragon hunter, DOTD focuses on a dragon shifter and his quest to save his lineage. Under the direction of his wayward cousin, Archer Andras is now on the hunt for a dragon scroll that tells the tale of his birth (alongside his brother’s) and how it split the dragon lineage apart in to two factions that are now at war. The scroll holds the key top unlocking Archer’s full potential as a dragon hunter, one prophesied. But the scroll is in the hands of one delectable human that Archer can’t seem to get his mind off of. Now he’s fighting for more than just his own namesake, now he’s fighting for his mate.

Thaisa, a secretly world-class translator and historical extraordinaire, has some wacky friends. When a much needed girl’s night out leads to dragon and magic talk, she’s convinced she needs to head home. But when she arrives, a man claiming to have purchased a new, rare scroll is there to collect. Dashing and devilishly handsome, Archer talks Thaisa into letting him take the scroll but it’s the biggest mistake of her career. Under her boss’s threat to retrieve it, she has to navigate a new world she’s never even dreamed of. Dragons, fairies, magic, and demons are all a new part of her world and Thaisa is stuck right in the middle of it. All the while Archer is by her side warming her with his dragon fire and tempting her to leave it all behind. Despite the world of magic, in order to save Archer’s people, their future, and even Thaisa’s Gran (threatened by her boss), only Thaisa holds the key to translating the scroll to unleash Archer’s true power.

Filled with the typical wit and humor from any MacAlister book, this fantastical story reminded me a bit of King Arthur. A runaway prince, dreaming of finding his true destiny and a lovely maiden to tie it all together. This is true fantasy wonderfully melded with the modern world. Rocking side hicks, hilarious hi-jinks, and demon battles to keep even the slowest reading flipping the pages faster and faster. Another truly wonderful addition to the massive library that is MacAlister’s fantasy romance come to life!

This was such a fun read! MacAlister knows how to write strong, yet quirky female characters who will not be dominated by their alpha male dragons. The mystery involved in this novel was wonderful, and lead into potential for the next book in the series.
All in all, I thought the dynamic between the couple was enjoyable, and the smutty bits were delightful!

I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
This story has a bit of everything pulling you in from the start.
The humour, romance and action hold the story line together, making for a very enjoyable read.

Do not bother with the second story which is a run of the mill shape shifter story.

Day Of The Dragon:
I've read many stories by Katie MacAlister and had loved them, but sadly this book just didn't do it for me. I really wanted to like it, but I just didn't. It was slow and had an all over crazy storyline about dragons, demons, and constellations.

Thaisia is smart, and interesting, but she has massive hangups about her appearance and how lacking she was compared to Archer. She had no knowledge of there being an Otherworld, yet she busted out spells and whatnot from reading books...? Ok then. She truly got on my nerves the whole way through the story. They'd be in the middle of a fight scene, and she'd start asking questions and having verbal diarrhea. For real?

Archer fell flat for me as well. I felt he really only wanted to touch, taste, and boss around Thaisia, it got annoying real quick. I liked that he was protective though, but even that was a bit much.

The only thing that really helped this story was Bree. She was a wonderful secondary character. She was quirky, entertaining, intriguing, and just a ball of sunshine!

Laura sounded like a good character, but then she just disappeared at the beginning during the flight. There was no more mention of her nor did she ever return Thaisia's phonecall. Curious to know more about her.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this story to my friends. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC, this is my honest review.

Wolf's Mate:

This is a new to me author that I happened to stumble upon due to the book being part of a 2-in-1 book. I’m a fan of paranormal romance and this one was a good read! It was interesting, a bit intense, sexy, and was very visual in the descriptions (but not too detailed).

I liked both main characters and the secondary ones. This story is about Abby and Declan. Abby is a strong female, even when danger arises. Sure, she breaks down some, but what civilian wouldn’t when people are shooting at you and trying to kill/kidnap you. I liked how caring she was also.

Declan was alpha, sexy, protective, and seriously skilled with killing. I loved the family he formed with his team and how they had each other’s backs.

All in all, this was a good and enjoyable read! I’m definitely going to continue the series!

I always have such a good time with MacAlister’s dragons and Day of the Dragon was no exception.

When Thaisa accidentally sells an ancient text her boss wanted to keep, she’s determined to get it back before her boss harms her grandmother. She never expected her search to lead her straight into the arms of a dragon and into the middle of a ferocious dragon war. Now that Archer’s found his mate, he’s not going to let her go but time’s running out and the battle is raging around them. Will Thaisa be able to solve the text before Archer and the rest of the Storm Dragons are destroyed?

I really liked Thaisa. She’s a bit quirky, tends to ramble when she’s nervous, and I’m never really sure what she’s going to say. She also carries the Poliosis gene, which has caused her to have white streaks in her hair and eyelashes and oddly colored eyes, and she’s had some issues with self-confidence because of it. Archer is the Master of the Storm Dragon’s so he’s oozing alpha dragon vibes, which I rather enjoyed. He’s also a bit mysterious so I was never really sure what his game plan was.

Archer and Thaisa was such a fun couple and they definitely had a boatload of chemistry that was bounding off the page. My only problem with their romance was that it was an instalust/instalove romance. With paranormal romances, I expect the instalove due to the fated mates plot device, but this one just felt a tad bit too rushed. I would have liked to have seen Archer and Thaisa interact a bit more before falling head-over-heels. I was also hoping Thaisa would become a bit more comfortable in her own skin and lose her jealous streak.

The mystery/suspense in this one had me guessing until the end and, once revealed, the character’s actions made sense. I still would have liked to have had more buildup rather than just dumping everything at the end but it still worked.

While I did enjoy this book, I feel like this one faltered a bit compared the first one. This one was a bit rushed and lacked the world building Memoirs of a Dragon Hunter had, which surprised me. I also felt like some of the sex scenes were just out of place.

Overall, I still enjoyed this one. Archer and Thaisa were a perfect fit—he with his demands and her ignoring him while rambling about something trivial—and made for an interesting read. It’s not as well-rounded as the first book in the series but I still think it was a great addition.

Someone is killing Archer’s dragons and they all believe it’s his brother’s tribe doing the killing. Thaisa is a researcher in a collector’s shop. When a page leaf is acquired by her boss that suggests it’s ‘the true telling of the Raisa Medallion’ Archer buys it. Thaisa ends up confronting Archer when she finds him late at night taking the leaf. He believes she was about to renege on his purchase, and he wasn’t going to let that happen. Thaisa has unique looks, she has Poliosis, which makes her self-conscious and defensive about her looks. She twists a lot of compliments into attacks on her appearance. She also acquires a funny sidekick Bree who is way more than she seems. When her boss discovers she’s sold the leaf he threatens her and her grandmother suffering from Alzheimers. While she’s desperately trying to get the leaf back from Archer, his brother tries to hire her to translate a photo copy of the leaf. Kidnappings occur, inappropriate touching, various threats, plots uncovered, secrets revealed…there’s a lot jam packed in this story. With a dangling threat to be resolved in a future story.
I read a review copy from NetGalley so some things may change before final release but in my copy there were some consistency issues with them sometimes being called Dragon Hunter and other places in the story they are called Demon Hunter and a few minor editing issues. There are a couple of spots where believability went right out the door. For example Thaisa was going to meet a potential client to translate and decode a document but was going to meet this complete stranger at a club at 9 pm. I’m sorry but I had a tough time wrapping my brain around that.
Theres definitely interesting reading here and I’m curious how this series will play out.

Declan is an agent for the Shifter Operations Command, assigned to watch the company Abby hired to audit. Declan becomes obosessed with Abby, a cougar shifter. When Abby digs too deep and uncovers FosCo's secret dealings with Unified Humanity, a shifter hate group, her life becomes endangered and Declan and his wolf move in to save her. There's running and fighting and killiing and laughter and a lot of teasing. I liked this group of deadly, misfit, shifters. I'll definately be looking for the next book in the series Tiger's Claim. Review forthcomingI received a copy of Day of the Dragon in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.

I used to read Katie MacAlister books all the time. She was one of the authors who got me back into the genre after a long absence. But I got to that point where I’d read her whole backlist, and her new books weren’t coming out soon enough that I got distracted–probably down a Nora Roberts hole–it’s been twenty odd years and I still haven’t read her whole bcklist! But I haven’t read anything by her in a decade.

Day of the Dragon reminds me why I enjoyed her books, although my tastes have changed somewhat since then (more on that later). They’re light and fluffy–the sort of books words like zany and romp were made for.

Thaisa starts off as a character who is mousy, unsure of herself, and blames her appearance for everything that’s gone wrong for her. Archer starts off as an arrogant man–and he grows, but not nearly as much.

The problem for me was that I wasn’t all that intrigued by the main story. The most interesting character was Bree, a spite turned something else who always seems to know more than the other players, but is absurdly funny. As is the demon Thaisa calls up, but forgets to bind properly.

The big crux of the story was that there was an ancient piece of text that needed to be translated to find the location of the two missing halves of the Raisa Medallion, which was supposed to turn Archer and his brother into the first dragon hunters (dragons who hunt demons, not humans who hunt dragons).

The book fits in well with the rest of the dragon books written by MacAllister, but works as a standalone.

Here is my issue with it–The stakes are so incredibly low. We know that Archer is accusing his brother of murdering his fellow dragons, but there’s a twist that it’s all confusing and makes those stakes non-existant really. While Thaisa and Archer both undergo some changes and growth, that’s all low stakes, too. There are also some secondary characters who are charicatures—Thaisa’s best friend, who literally shows up once, and was married to her current boss, and given the way he treats Thaisa, I kind of want to know what her deal was, and that boss is also more outline than character. The story didn’t hold my interest, which is the biggest issue of all. I had to push myself through it. Without Bree the sprite and the demon, it would be a 2/5 rating.

Loved this story! It was scary heartwarming and sometimes just plain funny. You can’t help but love Thaisa and her attitude with Archer she is smart funny even a little hard on herself but it makes the story that much more. Archer is a gorgeous man who never thought he would find a mate much less be amused and in awe of her brains. When Archer comes to retrieve the page he paid for he is attacked buy a woman he would never have paid attention to but her fieriness makes him look a little deeper.
You also get an additional book with this called Wolf’s Mate
Abby just wants a simple life after what she went through as a child at the hands of Unified Humanity hiding after they killed her parents. Working as an accountant is about as quiet as it can get until she stumbles on a discovery of money being wired to the Unified Humanity. With that discovery she has tipped off the owner and the SHOC who had been watching them for weeks but something about Abby intrigues DeClan and he is gonna save her.
DeClan feels such a connection to Abby that he is defying orders ,saving her and hiding her. Everybody wants her but not like DeClan does his wolf wants her cougar and the attraction is mutual. Abby and DeClan are fighting against the world but when they hid out at his brother Pike's house someone rats them out. Now that Abby is missing DeClan is gonna pull out every stop to find her no matter what.
This story is full of danger and passion and of course shifters, Abby and DeClan are both tough and brave hopefully they will let down their walls for each other.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

So I like the concept of the book and I enjoyed the book overall but there were some things that got me going meh.

character development: good and twisty at times. I say this for the fact that Archer’s brother was just a twisty character period tor me so his character development is twisty. Thaisa goes from self conscious and not as confident as she could be to strong and a good match for Archer. Archer I enjoyed from the beginning. He shows us his strong understanding side and his tough as nails side as well.

Plot: many many side plots that kind of sit like dangling participles. The concept of the Diary that Thaisa was doing-what happened? The different feuds and why kind of got tangled together. The boss not boss of Thaisa and his sister (her BFF) what happened there? What about Thaisa’s loved one? What about all the side characters that showed some prominence in the story what happened?

Entertainment value: Good. I enjoyed watching the natural progression of Thaisa and Archer’s romance. I enjoyed the main plot and how it progressed. Seeing the feud come to the twisting turns and the riddles be revealed as Archer and his brother find out the truth of their past is great. The ending leaves you hanging and wonder what is next.

Overall: good story. Love Archer and how he is protective, strong, bad ass dragon and caring as well. Him and Thaisa give some sexy moments and some entertaining ones in their interactions and how she frustrates him and vice versa at times. The feud is given good background to have understand the basics but not bog you down with too much detail and the ending has you wanting more.

I have always enjoyed Katie MacAlister's books, but this one was even more of a delight than I was expecting. The witty banter between characters had me laughing out loud (and waking my husband up because I stayed up all night reading). The brother-against-brother war that is the crux of the plot had many deep details of past hurts and misunderstandings that made me truly hope for a reconciliation between Archer and Hunter. Throw in the modern minded and smart Thaisa into the mix, and the two ancient dragon-shifting brothers have no idea how to keep up.

Thasia has very little self-confidence because of her unusual looks, and has no idea why anyone like Archer would be interested in her. I enjoyed following the ways Archer helped build her up and help her to see that she is beautiful, both inside and out, in her own way. It's nice to come across a story where the leading lady isn't a svelte bombshell beauty by societal norms who still can still show strength and character in many other facets - such as intelligence, wit, problem solving, compassion, and a sense of adventure.

I am looking forward to the next book by Katie. I'm in need of another good laugh and great story. Recommended for fans of Minerva Howe, Christine Feehan, and C. L. Wilson.

Free ARC provided through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning of the book starts off extremely fast-paced, so much that it seemed like I was missing a first chapter. Because of this it took me a few chapters to get into the storyline but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. I love how unique and rare Thaisa’s looks are, but I really hate her extreme lack of confidence. It seems like the author missed a great opportunity to show readers that women are beautiful no matter their image as long as they are confident in themselves. I don’t mind a female character who’s a little cynical and realistic about her image, but Thaisa becomes whiny and annoying with it, so far as to hate others for being good-looking. It just made her seem immature. Other than that, I liked the premise, I just wish it was executed a little more clearly. Some parts were confusing to read, because it wasn’t clear what was going on, particularly in the ending. I’ll be interested to see how MacAlister takes this series with the new Dragon Hunters.

Bonus Review of Wolf’s Mate:
Now this was a fantastic story! I love Abby’s character. She’s the perfect mix of sweet, sass, and a little badass. Declan is exactly what you’d expect in a shifter, very alpha-male and overprotective but in such a sexy way. I’m really interested in Cole’s story and the continued storyline of Uniformed Humanity.

I didn't realize that this was book 2 in this series but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone and be perfectly understood. Thaisa has been thrown into a world she knew nothing about and is just trying to understand and make it through to the other side. She is a smart woman but she definitely has hand ups, although I guess after dealing with them her whole life, who wouldn't? That was my only drawback with this book, she kinda harps on her looks a lot and compares them with Archer. Archer definitely reminded me of this author's other dragon characters and made me laugh. A lot! And after reading this book I did go back and read the first one to make sure there wasn't anything I had missed. There are a lot of parts that will make you laugh, there is definitely action, and some suspense thrown in as well. I enjoyed it, I just didn't like the whole harping on the looks part. The second book is by Celia Kyle, and that is the first book I had read by that author. I thoroughly enjoyed that one! And have since gone looking for the rest in that series and to see what other types of books she writes! So in this one you get a great read by 2 different authors! Well worth it!
