This one was a lot of fun.

Koichi falls for one of his students at his college. She's a writer, and she's trying to find out more about Vigilantes. With that Koichi of course falls for her. Popstar doesn't like that as she has a crush on Koichi. Then Koichi mom comes and visits and lolz happens.

Just like all the other volume it's not amazing but it's alot of fun. The series just contains a lot of easy going moments, good character developments, fun fights. It doesn't blow me away but I'll continue to read it. A 3.5 out of 5.

I feel like this volume dragged a bit, but I really did still enjoy it. This series is light enough to binge, but dark enough to consider some really in-depth criticisms of Japan's current government and societal expectations.

Man, the story keeps getting better and better! Makoto sure is a lovely addition to this spin-off. The identity of Knuckleduster is finally revealed. I'm glad that Koichi's mom came over to Tokyo. It was a lot of FUN! 😁

After the sexist mess that was Volume 2, I am so relieved this series has picked up so drastically. It's by far my favourite volume so far in the series, and one of my favourites across both Vigilantes and the original My Hero Academia series.

First and foremost, there's almost a subversion of misogynistic tropes. It has the familiar jealousy of love interests, but Pop is never actively cruel, and while i dislike the focus on her body, she has these two different sides to herself and I feel like there's a confidence to her character that's very comforting and grounded. The attention paid to her character feels more purposeful and a commentary on the way OTHERS respond, a lot less like, say, Momo in BNHA and her honestly terrible outfit.

Makoto is also INCREDIBLE. When she first appears, you think she's going to become the pretty love interest, but she really doesn't become that. She's intelligent, driven, and unwilling to compromise her own morals and beliefs for the sake of men. Her character isn't sexualised at all, and she's never confrontational with Pop. There's a moment between her, a guy's wife and the guy that just got me with how well written her character is, and I really hope they don't ruin her characterisation in future volumes. Apparently she's modelled somewhat after Lois Lane, and I am very familiar with how many (male) writers have ruined her character since conception.

AND YES: Makoto is the sister of Naomasa, the hot police officer from BNHA!!!!!! Hot police officer has a hot studious sister!!!!

I also love that this volume doesn't feel as plot heavy. There are interconnecting points and revelations, and for that the volume is cohesive and you can follow with the passage of time, but it's mostly character focused and builds the relationships between characters. I love Koichi's mum, and I really liked seeing all of his friends come together to help him build this image to cover up his vigilantism. There are some.... things (floating? ingenium!!! knuckleduster is actually kind of nice? pop has a CRUSH and it's CUTE), and I just really loved the writing this volume.

At the end, there are two extra stories and some extra character designs. The first one is the heroes being briefed about the drug issue currently happening in the main arc, and I just... loved it. It's Aizawa centric, has some great moments between him and Kayama (Midnight, who I love and adore and I dig her and Aizawa's friendship so much), and a little bit of Aizawa and Yamada (I'm a BIG Present Mic fan, okay?!), and sort of builds on how Aizawa became a teacher, which was fun!

Story #2 follows Naomasa visiting All Might's office and having his first meeting with him, with a few twists. It's really nice seeing Yagi when he was almost at his prime, and knowing how close these two characters are and how much they trust each other in the original series, it's great to see how their friendship originated! There's a little Nighteye reference that Got Me TM, and overall is just a really nice story that develops a relationship we know but aren't overly familiar with.

I forgot to yell about Tensei! I love Tensei Iida! There's a moment where he's in the background of the first extra story and he just tells someone he doesn't need a car, he'll just run home, and it cracked me up. More Tensei in the main series! I feel sad when I think about what happens to Tensei literally only a few years from when you see him in Vigilantes. I'm holding out hope that they'll eventually have Koichi interact with Tenya, because that would be.... the crossover of the century, honestly. TENSEI: GIVE. KOICHI. A. JOB.

ANYWAY yes. Volume 4 if you disappoint me I'll riot :)

Another great volume. There are two specials at the end, as well. My thoughts on one of those is kind of negative, but I enjoyed everything else.

I enjoyed most of the new characters, while the old continued to be great.

I don't think you're supposed to like Captain Celebrity, so I can't fault the manga for him. He does make a great annoying character, though. :P I liked his backstory as well, as it just doubles down on why he's not that great. Though, it's funny seeing his design after just having caught a glimpse of America's Number 1 hero (as I'm reading Vigilantes after Season 6 of the MHA anime ending). Both designs are so stereotypically American, yet the characters give off such different vibes while still sharing a strong confidence.

Enough of him, though. Makoto is a great new addition. I like her design, and her role in the story is fun. Her presence also gives some funny/cute moments to Kazuho. The more I learn/see of Kazuho, the more I love her. She's just so precious when she's not glammed up as Pop Step.

We also finally learn more about Knuckleduster. I was not expecting it, but it works really well for him.

Koichi was just as fun as ever, and I loved getting to know more about his mom and seeing all that.

Overall, this volume was a lot of fun with some great characters moments, as well as quite a few panels of Kazuho looking adorable. Of course, there's still plenty of action.

Now, for the two specials. With the first one, I enjoyed the idea behind it, and it was cool to see the street clothing of some of the pro heroes. It was nice seeing Midnight in an outfit that wasn't so sexual... Until it devolved into fan service and her constantly speaking in innuendos... I get it, though, she's chosen to emphasize her sexiness, so it mostly doesn't bother me even if it makes me uncomfortable at the same time. For her, it gives her more power rather than degrades her, plus it works with her quirk. However, I did NOT enjoy her sexualizing minors. That was gross. Still, it was nice to see how her and Eraser ended up teachers at UA.

As for the second special, I loved it. Unfortunately, there's a panel with yet more fanservice (very unnecessary fanservice, at that). However, the main focus is how Naomasa ends up becoming friends with All Might, as well as how All Might is managing his super hero life and his secret identity life. There's a couple pages I found hilarious, and it's a wonder more people haven't figured out All Might's secret. XD But it was really enjoyable, and I love seeing origin stories for how certain things came to be.

although the original series have "unlikable" characters, I still love all of them but when it comes to this series, I can't help but get annoyed by a character. C.C needs to chill. Don't know why he needs to show off. Is this what overcompensating means? Is he insecure as a hero? Or is he disguised as hero but actually a villain?

🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪
the manga I read included two special episodes with the pro heroes. and thank you for that, I always love to see them. they make me laugh, my hero academia has really great characters.

Oooh...this volume brings in some new characters with new Quirks. Yay. I love the new details we are learning about Pop Step and Knuckleduster in here as well, and in some of the bonus content it was mentioned that Knuckleduster has a serious storyline coming up, so I'm excited to see that. This volume also had a couple special issues, which gave more insight into both Aizawa/Eraser Head and Toshinori/All Might. They were pretty intriguing.

There were some decent parts to the main chapters, but also some really annoying parts, and the thing that ultimately saved this volume from being the worst is the inclusion of the two special chapters. (All Might! Midnight! AIZAWA!)

Each volume seems to get better as they go on. It may be a spin off, but it's becoming a really exciting and intriguing storyline. This volume goes into more detail about the hero society and how it came to be. It tells us how all heroes originated as vigilantes, but were scooped up into a system to distinguish heroes from villains - people who use their powers for good on the side of the law, and those who want to use them to harm innocents. But, as we know, it's not that simple. There's no black and white with heroes and villains. There are villains who are classified as such simply because they use their powers illegally, despite it being for good purposes (like the vigilantes), and there are heroes that only care for fame and publicity, acting selfishly rather than genuinely. One character in particular, Captain Celebrity, reminds me of the Harry Potter character Gilderoy Lockheart who only cares for fame and his celebrity status rather than actually helping people (or in Lockheart's case, teaching and actually helping those he claimed to have rescued/aided in the past). It's very reflective of real life, showing the difference between good hearted and selfless people and the selfish and greedy ones, yet both can be classified as good people, or heroes in this case.

Koichi is still one of my favourite characters from this series. He's a sweetheart, and dare I say a bit of a pushover, but he has a heart of gold and continues to try to reach his goals despite what people say to him. He has plenty of run-ins and close calls that keep you on the edge of your seat. He's hair-raisingly close to having his vigilante identity discovered, has several close calls with villains in epic fights, and we get to see more of his personal life and family. We also watch his powers expand beyond the previous volume, showing that he's more skilful than he believes himself to be.

This story continues the plotline involving the villain drug, Trigger, and how people are being turned into monstrous villains that are taken down by the vigilantes and pro heroes, but really they're innocents being turned into victims. The vigilantes interact with the pro heroes more, in particular with Ingenium and his agency, and they group up against a large villain in an exciting chase. In amongst the exciting action, however, there are really touching moments between the vigilantes, and we see their growing relationships with one another.

This volume also came with two special episodes that are set at the beginning of volume 2. The first being a meeting with pro heroes such as Midnight, Eraser Head, Thirteen, Endeavour, and Best Jeanist, among others. We get a glimpse of them in their off duty clothes as they attend a meeting to discuss Trigger and how the 'villains' they have been apprehending are actually victims of the drug, which is a shock to them all. All Might cannot attend, however, because he's a busy guy, and we see Endeavour's bitter jealousy towards the number one hero, allowing his anger towards All Might affect his judgement, and he acts irrationally as a result. We also witness a discussion between Midnight and Eraser Head about how she's becoming a teacher at U.A. and thinks he should become one too, since he has such strong ideals about what a hero should be. He laughs it off, but it's clear that one day he will take that path (and we know he does from the main series).

The second episode gives us an insight into the All Might agency when he was in his prime. We see how he's bombarded with fans and paparazzi after every mission. He's courteous and polite to them all, accepting their gifts and taking the time to talk to everyone. You can see how he maintains the number one hero status, yet we can also see how it takes a toll on him. He uses his weaker form as an alternate identity around his HQ, distributing the gifts people gave All Might from previous missions to his staff, which is utterly adorable. He's also incredibly overworked as he maintains the idea that he will save everyone he can, and will literally drop everything to help deal with even the smallest of crimes/problems, such as cats stuck up a tree or a purse snatcher. He uses his weaker form to meet with people who want to get hold of All Might when he is too tired to maintain his strong form. This time, however, when Naomasa Tsukauchi from the local police meets with him to tell him about Trigger, All Might accidentally reveals himself, and we see how the pair become genuine friends (as seen in the main series), where Tsukauchi promises to keep his identity a secret whilst helping him fill out the pesky paperwork that All Might cannot keep up with from the amount of people he saves and incidents he deals with. He won't let paperwork get in the way of helping people, even if that means what he does doesn't strictly follow the law, so Tsukauchi offers his help.

Overall, I'm really excited to see where this story is going to go from here. It's so difficult to pace myself with this manga and ensure I don't devour it all in one sitting. It keeps me hooked from start to finish and there isn't a dull moment.

This side series continues to surprise me with how much I wind up enjoying everything it has on offer! While there are a few sillier things going on in this volume (such as the entire introduction to Captain Celebrity,) we also get some absolutely fascinating world-building and lore/history in this volume!

We're introduced to Detective Tsukauchi's younger sister Makoto, as a potential rival to Kazuho (Pop Step) for our main boy Koichi's affections, as she meets him at the college they both attend and offers to help him with some coursework. In the process, Makoto gives us some background on the history of vigilantes and the establishment of heroes, which really raises some interesting questions and criticisms about the hero system as a whole. Additionally, during this little history lesson, Makoto states the first official heroes were instated in the USA, specifically tied to events in Rhode Island, and that of the nearly 200 operating vigilantes at the time, only 7 were found qualified to be instated as the first heroes. You can imagine on reading this, my inner DC geek was delighted and took this as a silent little nod to the Justice League, given the were 7 founding members and the earliest base of operations was out of Rhode Island before the creation of the Hall of Justice. (And given the sheer number of references to western superheroes that already exist in Vigilantes alone, this isn't out of the question as a possibility!)

We also get to meet Koichi's mom in this volume, as well as spending more time with Makoto and Ingenium, and it really helps to hint at Koichi's growing relationships and his potential for his quirk to become stronger. All of this is good stuff and I'm eating it up!

Additionally, this volume has two special chapters on the side. One is a very lighthearted little story about how All Might and Detective Tsukauchi met and became friends, with the detective coming to share All Might's secret. The other is a meetup of various heroes to discuss the events of the story so far (the Trigger drug and the people who've been affected by it.) We mostly follow Aizawa here as he silently criticizes and points out flaws in Endeavor's logic, and then his resulting discussion with Midnight as they leave the meeting. She announces to him that she is about to start teaching at UA, and as she begins to talk in her rather...uncomfortable way about her excitement for teaching, Aizawa outright tells her that what she's saying is disturbing. (He's not wrong. Keep your kink out of the classroom, Midnight.) From there, the two of them briefly team up to stop a distraught, angry suicide bomber, which...given Midnight's presence, goes about how you might expect. Afterwards, Midnight suggests Aizawa should also consider teaching, which he scoffs at as irrational. Days later she calls him and tells him that she recommended him to Principal Nezu despite Aizawa's objections. Small wonder he's not a great teacher, he never wanted to be there in the first place! Makes you wonder why he said yes.

Anyway, if it wasn't clear, I think everyone who is a fan of the main series should consider picking this up! It's fun and there's a lot you'll get from it, I think.

There's an amount I could copy-paste my review of book 1, because it's still pretty much "Knock-Off My Hero Academia" and unabashed about it. I only even read it because the library had it, and why not.

Even the anime was kind of middling, with the main draw (for me) being Pop☆Step's bridge in the theme song seems like it would be fun and easy to animate* with different characters. Some of the problem is the same problem that MHA has, which I've been less forgiving about since the story has ended (and poor endings have ruined my opinion of the whole series before): the girl characters are significantly underpowered and underutilised compared to their boy counterparts (and don't get me started on non-binary/androgynous characters), and—less acknowledged in reviews—"ugly" characters aren't given any screentime compared to more conventionally attractive ones, or they're villains. (Exception: Knuckleduster has a huge facial scar, though that's counteracted by both Makoto and Koichi's mom having the hots for him anyway.)

I mean, we watched the anime ANYWAY, because there aren't a lot of shows my spouse and I agree on watching together, so if it's even vaguely tolerable, it's—what?—12 or 13 dinners' worth of entertainment? Then we can move on to whatever other middling show to watch for a while. In THAT respect, the story is okay, but I've forgotten most of it until having just read part of it now (and it DOES follow fairly closely, other than the one scene that got cut from book 1 that I felt was important for setting).

I don't know. I mostly want to punch Captain Celebrity, though I think that's the idea, haha. Recommended for fans of MHA who want more from the same universe (but earlier), though start with book 1—book 3 is a terrible starting point.

Koichi accidentally foiling Makoto at first is funny, though. Hooray for misnaming!

*it's actually not, haha, I tried... granted, my fingers hurt a LOT lately, especially now that cold weather is setting in

We meet Makoto and an American hero moved to Japan, Captain Celebrity.

Captain Celebrity is basically everything you’d expect from a stereotypical American. He’s pompous, flashy, obnoxious, and really only in it for the clout. Furuhashi claims he’s more complicated and gets better, but I’ll just have to take his word on this one. As of now he’s just a douche, not a fan.

Makoto is Tsukauchi’s younger sister with a polygraph quirk where she can tell if someone’s lying after asking a question if touching them. She goes to college with Koichi and recruits him to help her get data for her thesis which is basically questioning the nature of heroes. She’s immediately suspicious that Koichi is the crawler tho everyone calls him the cruller so when she asks he truthfully says no. It’s cute because Koichi clearly thinks she’s hot and that really pisses off Pop which is precious. I ship him with Pop quite a bit.

We meet Koichi’s mom too who basically thinks he’s always been a fool for going out of his way to do hero stuff and is very judgmental of his choices. She even brings up him being late to his school exams when he’d saved Pop which naturally upsets her, but he doesn’t know she’s the kid he saved that day. Also she preciously dressed up for him to meet his mom, probably also to pretend to be the girlfriend he told his mom he had which is too cute. Even Knucklebuster shows up in casual wear to meet his mom, they’re all adorbs. But of course hijinks ensue and they all end up trapped on a runaway bus where Koichi reveals he’s the crawler to Mokoto in saving her life. She seems cool so I’m not worried about her doing anything to reveal their identities and I think she’ll be a good ally for the group.

Then we get a cool lit scenes of the pros meeting to discuss the rampant quirk booster drug which is causing regular civilians to act as villains so they need to be careful who they attack. We see Endeavor in the height of his jealousy of All Might, not a cute look. He’s so wrapped up in his envy that he’s not too great at his job, a wild contrast to what he’s grown to be in the main series now. But an interesting peak into his past. This is also when Midnight decided to join UA and is the one to recommend Aizawa as a teacher as well, precious angels. It’s kind of crazy he hasn’t been teaching for that long, but I guess we don’t have an exact year of when this takes place, just that it’s clearly before the events of MHA.

We also get to see Tsukauchi and Small Might first teaming up n its adorbs. I love getting to see All Might in action and especially love getting more Tsukauchi, I love all the pro content it’s really cool. I love our Vigilantes but getting info of the main cast of characters as well is really such a treat. Love this spin off, just such a fun expansion of an already great world.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 3 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next seven chapters (12–18) of the on-going manga series and two specials: "Hero Conference" and "Hero Visit".

The tankōbon is divided roughly into three parts with three new characters being introduced with some sort of relation connected with Koichi Haimawari.

Makoto Tsukauchi is introduced in the first third of the tankōbon. She is the younger sister of Naomasa Tsukauchi, who younger self makes a cameo in this tankōon and she happens to be the senpai of Koichi Haimawari. She is working on her thesis on Heroes, Vigilantes, and Villains and has conscripted Koichi Haimawari to be her bodyguard as she does interviews. Similar to her brother's, her quirk is Polygraph, who has the ability to detect the authenticity of someone’s words by touching them.

Christopher Skyline also known as Captain Celebrity is the top-rank American hero and is introduced in the second third of the tankōbon. He is extremely arrogant and a stereotypical celebrity and Koichi Haimawari instantly hated him just after meeting him. He usually only cares about his appearance and how the public views him. He will do anything for popularity, no matter how morally wrong it is. His recklessness and pervertedness got him into trouble in America, so he moved to Japan to escape his past.

Shoko Haimawari is the mother of the main protagonist of Koichi Haimawari. She was in town on a school reunion and decided to drop by to visit her son on the way. She is bossy with her son, slapping him for each mistake he makes with her quirk. Her quirk is Fly Swatter, which allows her to send energy waves and attack from a farther distance than her normal reach.

Hideyuki Furuhashi has written this tankōbon. It started rather well, albeit I was expecting a continuation of Chizome Akaguro and his devolution to become Hero Killer: Stain, so I felt off-kilter. I really enjoyed the introduction of Makoto Tsukauchi as she almost guessed the secret identity of Koichi Haimawari. The introduction of Shoko Haimawari also gave some insights to how Koichi Haimawari grew up and how he came to be. Betten Court illustrated this tankobon and it was rather well done and similar to those of Kohei Horikoshi – the inspiration of the series.

All in all, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 3 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2020/...

Extrait :

3.5/5 stars. I’m really starting to like this series.

The three protagonists are such a great team with a great dynamic. Everyone has really grown on me. Pop Step in particular (Haneyama Kazuho) is really cute and I’m understanding her character more. She’s a shy, quiet girl at school who dresses like a dowdy country girl and when she’s Pop Step she gets to be the flash showstopper. She’s definitely got a crush on Koichi and her behaviour around him is funny. Knuckleduster was also weirdly sweet in this volume and I just love his gruff but caring design. He really is trying to help these kids. And Koichi is just such a great protagonist. He’s just really ordinary person. But he’s trying to be a hero. When he powers up in the final chapter, I was actually proud of him and his efforts. He’s a real trier. His mum was also a great addition to the story. Her realistic perspective on heroes just makes Koichi and his life all the more ordinary and humorous.

This volume introduces us to Makoto, the sister to All Might’s friend and police officer Naomasa. She’s a sociologist(?) interested in Heroes and the system that makes them so she’s investigating Vigilantes to see where the line is drawn. She’s may also be falling for Koichi somehow. American hero Captain Celebrity makes his first appearance and he honestly just sucks, as expected. The book was dragging a bit until the My Neighbour Totoro cat bus went insane. This was a really good little arc and we got to see Ingenium again. His teamwork with Koichi was worth the pain of sitting through CC’s presence. A really great simple rescue.

I think I’m starting to understand this series’s M.O. There aren’t going to be big battles with OP villains, it’s going to be little heroes doing the work on the ground that the big guys miss. And I think I’m okay with that. These guys are worth investing in.

koichi quirk awakening ?????

- makoto is so cute ofc she’s a tsukauchi i love to see it and her polygraph quirk is so cool like the fact that she straight up asks koichi if he’s one of the vigilantes but it doesn’t register through her quirk because he’s the “crawler” not the “cruller” i loved that little tidbit
- captain celebrity or wtv was boo boo and such a random addition to the story tbh like didn’t care for him or his involvement one bit
- GOJIRA APPEARANCE???? 🦖
- koichi’s mom showing up and makoto pretending to be his gf 👀👀 pop showing up and “dressing up” for the occasion to also pretend she’s koichi’s gf 👀👀👀👀 koichi pulling
- knuckleduster civillian appearance!
- the catbus ripoff is so hsnssnsjsjsjsj
- tensei and koichi pretending like they don’t know each other
- reveal that koichi used to just free float as a baby!! and his minor quirk awakening is great because you can kinda put two and two together to where his quirk will take him. like a speedy flyer???
- the extra one shots about the pro heroes i just LOVE
- pro heroes in street clothes like i had no idea manual was such a cutie 😋😋 and jeanist decked out in a full denim suit i respect the drip king
- midnight fanservice 🫡🫡
- endeavour appearance 🫡🫡
- AIZAWA!!!!!!!!!!! so he only started teaching at UA about five years before the start of mha???
- toshi appearance ♥️♥️♥️♥️ i missed him so much
- i love that this shows how tsukauchi and toshi became besties pls i love that duo with all my heart

18/11/2022: Phát hành tập 3.

4 sao.

A bit more slice of life and less action this volume. We get a new character in Makoto, an older student at Koichi’s college who takes it upon herself to be his senpai and help him with his studies. She’s also writing a thesis on vigilantism so I guess she found the right kouhai lol. Shenanigans ensue, obviously Koichi has a tiny crush on her. We see sensei cleaned up (he cleans up well) and we learn his and Pop’s real names, so progress lol. Not much development with the drug. It makes its appearance a few times, but nothing major. We also see another team up with Ingenium. Also an American hero in the form of Captain Celebrity who embodies the worst of the US tbh. All Might for life!

So far it’s just little stuff to get Koichi more experience in the field. Dire situations push him to advance his powers again as well. There’s clear growth, it’s just slow lol. I still get a bit of a twinge whenever I see a hero who I know has something happen to them in MHA, but I’m trying to not let it get to me and just enjoy the lightheartedness of this story. Hopefully things pick up soon though.

This is a re-read. I almost never put comics in my read count (But I should). This volume is where this series really starts to come into it's own. Without the school setting in MHA, Vigilantes mainly takes place on the street with the main characters being a bit older. Koichi gets the spotlight in this volume and if you read between the lines, you kind of see why he's the way he is. Hachisuka takes a bit of a backseat (Big reveal for her in vol 4) whilst Ingenium returns for a brilliant rescue mission at the end. Furuhashi-sensei is really good at character beats. Every character is very distinct and adds a lot of colour to this corner of the world. As for the art, the two bonus chapters featuring the pro heroes from MHA were amazing- the seem to just burst out of the panels. I'm really cheering for this series.

Is anyone surprised that All Might doesn’t trust anyone, to the point of having to be his own personal secretary? Is so funny to think of people seeing Toshinori Yagi running around thinking he’s in a hurry to contact All Might. I find it very unlikely that he was able to hide his identity even from the people in his office, but he really was hands on in everything. That’s what you call an involved boss.

I find also interesting seeing that the public perception on vigilantes is not completely against them but not completely approved. It makes sense, considering they do help on the more everyday “street” crime, that pro heroes may be too busy to attend, but they are also easier to make fun of. Also seeing other heroes not so in the top, and how they try to work on that more street level business.
