A Clinician's Guide to Gender-Affirming Care: Working with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clients

Rate this book
Transgender and gender nonconforming (TNGC) clients have complex mental health concerns, and are more likely than ever to seek out treatment. This comprehensive resource outlines the latest research and recommendations to provide you with the requisite knowledge, skills, and awareness to treat TNGC clients with competent and affirming care.

As you know, TNGC clients have different needs based on who they are in relation to the world. Written by three psychologists who specialize in working with the TGNC population, this important book draws on the perspective that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for working with TNGC clients. It offers interventions tailored to developmental stages and situational factors—for example, cultural intersections such as race, class, and religion.

This book provides up-to-date information on language, etiquette, and appropriate communication and conduct in treating TGNC clients, and discusses the history, cultural context, and ethical and legal issues that can arise in working with gender-diverse individuals in a clinical setting. You’ll also find information about informed consent approaches that call for a shift in the role of the mental health provider in the position of assessment and referral for the purposes of gender-affirming medical care (such as hormones, surgery, and other procedures).

As changes in recent transgender health care and insurance coverage have provided increased access for a broader range of consumers, it is essential to understand transgender and gender nonconforming clients’ different needs. This book provides practical exercises and skills you can use to help TNGC clients thrive.

I'm a therapist and genderqueer.

➕ Wildly healthy and helpful.
➕ A must-read for all cis therapists,
➕ but also informative to those of us who are under the trans umbrella.
➕ It's written in an accessible way
➕ with examples of client-therapist interactions
➕ and lists of what to do and not to do.
➕ It focuses on intersectionality from the beginning.
➕ I'm learning about various trans communities through cultures and history.
🟰 I recommend it strongly to fellow clinicians.

Solid place to start if you haven’t worked with TGD folks before. The medical transition section is comprehensive and super helpful (particularly if you plan on writing MH assessment letters). A reference guide that I know I’ll turn back to again and again.

Due to sheer curiosity and availability, I picked up A Clinician’s Guide to Gender-Affirming Care by Sand C. Chang, Anneliese A. Singh, and Lore M. Dickey. It’s a very detailed summary of what could be done to accommodate people in need of the said gender-affirming care, and how varied it can be.

My Opinion: I see why some medical staff rated it mid-range, upset that authors act almost like no one else dealt with anyone from under transgender umbrella. Can’t really say how right or wrong all of that is. But I can talk from a standpoint of someone not in the medical field: this was very interesting to read. Very easy to follow and understand, no jargon to leave you confused, and what medical facts had to be defined – were not too dry to read. Overall, enjoyable. Might teach one how to talk to friends and/or family better too.

A 5 out of 5, highly recommend to simply curious souls.

It is a good reference for care workers involved with the transgender community mostly for training psychologists. I was looking for something more medically detailed on hormone replacement therapy it really isn't about that. However, it is good about learning about issues, concerns, folkways, and etiquette inside the transgender community. So it helps. It is a good guide in that respect.

A little about MtF HRT.

This is a pretty comprehensive book on the topic of providing mental health care to trans people. I appreciate the authors stance of de-pathologizing trans identities and centering trans people of color.

That said, the authors tend to assume the clinician reading the book has little experience with the trans community, and perhaps little experience as a psychotherapist as well. At times this resulted in a condescending tone that was irksome, and interfered with my being able to focus on the otherwise useful content.

This is a thorough and very helpful book exploring all aspects of serving trans and gender expansive clients. I'm genderfluid myself and still learned some important information and felt validated in other areas too. I skimmed some parts or skipped over them because I already had lived experience that gave me the same info, though I read at least 75% of the book fully. I'll be buying a copy for myself when an updated version comes out!

VERY helpful and comprehensive overview of best practices in clinical work with transgender and gender expansive clients. I appreciate that the authors also included a lot of of history, especially the history of clinical work with transgender individuals and different cultural conceptions of transgender folks through time all over the world.

Clinical books always take me a while to get through but this one was worth it. I recommend this book to anyone who works in the mental health field as you will undoubtedly work with people who identify as transgender, gender fluid, non binary, etc. I hope there are updates to this book over time as our world and our field are constantly changing.

A great reminder for clinicians to affirm to your clients that you believe them. So many trans clients can feel that if they don’t say the right thing or use the right words, they won’t receive care. Verbalize loudly your support so they feel they can be themselves without the fear of being dismissed from treatment.

As a cisgender person who often works with trans youth, I can't recommend this book enough. It should be read by everyone who works or wants to work with trans people.

One of the most useful, practical, and informative clinician's guides I've read. It's an important read for all clinicians, not just those that primarily work with the trans community.
