Practical advice from two NOLS instructors on all aspects of backcountry skiing and winter camping. As skiers venture farther from lift-served front country, they need to understand and avoid hazards such as avalanches and extreme cold. This book teaches skiers how to choose the right equipment, build winter shelters, stay safe, and have fun while minimizing their impact on the wilderness. Hundreds of entertaining but very practical illustrations by renowned illustrator Mike Clelland. Completely revised, updated, and even better than ever!
Andy and Mike’s books are spot on. Read this one for emergency winter camping skills as we are getting into snowmobiling this season. Love the illustrations to bring animation to his words. Their books have become my backcountry bibles.
Great book for all the basics. Especially with the addition of hilarious cartoons modeling ski moves and how to winter camp. Great book for someone who has been in the backcountry but has no real expertise. I can't wait to pull a sled to my snow cave after a long day of skiing. Also great basic ski touring tips and gear suggestions. The chapters are easy to follow and a fun read, even if the material is very "how-to" which is not not always a stimulating genre. I love that the book as written by two different people who give two different perspectives -- there really isn't one pack to bring etc.. so fun overall.

4 stars doesn't mean this is great literature (usually 4 stars is a high bar). In this case, it's a great manual for backcountry skiing. Tons of totally useful tips I wouldn't have thought of otherwise, and great illistrated how-tos for snow camping. Built my first quinzee (snowcave) from its instructions...
Highly recommend for any fairly-new backcountry skiiers.
I also love this book almost as much as the Telemark Tips book. Again, this is a cartoon book that is hilarious but also has useful tips for skiing and camping in the backcountry. In fact, this is how I learned to build a quinzhee snow shelter.
I love this book for the illustrations and the best idea ever: putting freezing hands on your ski partner's warm belly to keep yourself from getting frostbite--even if you are in no way in danger of getting frostbite, but just want to strike terror into your ski partner's heart :) Mm terror.
Another outstanding book by Mike and Allen! If you're preparing for a NOLS course or want to make an extended stay in the backcountry, this is the best book to get. Tips and tricks that will markedly improve your safety and quality of life out there!
