Dark Streets #2

Dragon's Egg

Rate this book
When did I become everyone’s paranormal Miss Fixit?

When the Lords of the Icelandic Elves summon me to use my talents to find a lost Dragon's egg, I find it hard to say no. I've seen what a Dragon can do, and a young, just-hatched Dragon is a being of pure destruction.

But word of the egg gets out, and the race to find it begins. Mages from many realms are in the hunt—including a Dragon—and they don’t always play well together. Unless I want to join the casualties, I need to find that egg and return it to where it belongs. Luckily, I have help, but I wish that damned golden-winged Nephilim would keep his shirt on.

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

As to my other interests, I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff.

This is second in a series and since it's UF, characters and story tend to develop over time. That's only lightly the case in this story, though, so you can probably get away with reading this first if you really want to.

This story takes Kellana traveling, so there isn't as much carry0ver as you'd expect to the second book in a series. Indeed, all the secondary characters are new. What does carry over is the type of story this author tells—heavy on action and plot, relatively shallow secondary characters, and an interesting main character. This plot is a bit less unified and features a lot of sequential developments, so it feels less interesting. So this is the weaker story.

This one also features a hunk who flies in and looks like a fun romantic partner. But Kingsolver steps in and manipulates it so that it doesn't go anywhere for much of the story. Which is a shame as that kind of romantic tension would have been interesting.

I'm still giving this three stars, like the first, but it's a round-up from whatever fraction of two stars it earned. The romance would have been interesting if it hadn't been wasted and the sequential action felt a bit too samey to me. Still, I like Kellana and won't mind picking her up in the next story.

A note about Steamy/Chaste: Kingsolver pushes the potential romance aside for much of this story so there's no romance. There's a setup that can get there in the next. But this story is nothing more than "wow, he has a nice chest".

If the first was a good book (even if far from great), the second one was weak and marred by some useless fake romance (or lust) that had no place in it. Not going to keep reading.

Pity it seems a different book (and heroine) from Gods and demons.

Great fun paranormal romp through Europe

I do enjoy BR Kingsolver’s books. This one was a fun chase through Europe with our hero Kellana, an elf who was stranded on Earth during the Second World War. She is the daughter of an apothecary and the head of a Queen’s Guard. She has a wide range of skills including potion making and sword fighting. The skill she is hired for, in this book, is her ability to sense and identity magic. Elves in Iceland want her track down a dragon’s egg that has been reported on Earth. A newly hatched dragon is a very, VERY dangerous thing.

During her quest Kellana meets up with old friends from her initial arrival on earth, right into the middle of the War. Her friends introduce her to a nephilim and a Valkyrie both of who are looking for the same thing she is.

There is lots of potions, sword fighting, magic and flying via angel wings. It is great fun and I read it from cover to cover in one sitting.

This is the second book in this series, but I think you could probably get away with reading this as a standalone, though why you would want to miss out on another great book, I don’t know!

I love this series!

I love this series that meshes the human world with Elves, demons and plenty of other paranormal creatures. Kellana is a very strong and independent woman that is self made and very confident. She gets roped into various situations and this one involves no less than dragons and their eggs. We also meet a nephilim, a Valkyrie and some old time mages. It was a great fantasy and I look forward to more.

I absolutely loved this story. Dragons, Elves, Mages, Valkyrie's and a Nephilim. How could you ever go wrong with a combination like that. This story was laugh out loud funny. I don't have anything negative to say about it. I can't wait to see what the next one is like. If you are thinking about this one, go for it you won't be disappointed. I gave this 5 stars.

I quite enjoyed this book, but at times I wasn't sure why. Too many things just happen and I'm left thinking where did that come from. Although I like Kellana she didn't develop in this book, in fact I found her less interesting than in Gods and Demons and I could really have done without her lusting after the half-angel.
The author isn't afraid to go over the top with her storyline and by the end of the book the body count was enormous. At times it even felt like the action was there to cover a lack of a thought out story.
If possible I would probably have given 2.5 stars.

Dragon's Egg

Loved it! Lots of action, twists and turns. Some sexual tension, but nothing graphic or erotic. Highly recommend to all readers of fantasy lore!

Excellent read

This was really good follow up to the first book. The dry humour and vivid world make for a fun read. I can't wait to see what a third instalment will bring.

I jumped into this second book, eager to see more of Kellana and the very interesting world she survives in. I was not disappointed. Fast paced and entertaining. Loved her vacation with a twist. Nothing like making it a working holiday to spice up ones life. I listened to my copy from Audible and enjoyed the narration.
Rachel Dulude does a great job with the pacing and impact. Her accent flowed very well for me and was the strawberry on my cheesecake. I can't wait to hear more from this narrator. I am going to be jumping right into the next book, though I'm sad it's not available yet on Audio. I must say I was a bit bummed that we didn't get to visit with Isabella and Mearka (the jaguar and Half Elf, not sure of the spelling since I listened only). As well as a few others of the previous book, but it did not diminish this story for me. I enjoyed meeting new characters and seeing new places. Looking forward to what else comes Kellana's way.

A fun run with lots of action and adventure. There are plenty of different races and magical creatures running around in this world (and others).

Kellana is a strong and well-grounded character. She doesn't have any problem leaving certain problems to those better suited to it and she doesn't think that makes her a coward. Kellana also has brains which she uses to try to come up with a logical and reasonably successful plan--it doesn't work all the time but she tries. Kellana makes the most of her skills which are pretty formidable. She may not be a warrior mage but she has sword skills, great alchemical knowledge, good tricks and strong allies.

There were a couple of nice big clashes that delivered but I thought the "last battle" was a little anticlimactic.

Politeness counts for a lot.

While not a battle mage,or even a mage, she more than holds her own. Her interactions and mixing very neatly reveals her world view and Elven society.

Bring on the elves!

I really enjoyed this second book in the Dark Streets series. The characters and plotlines were consistent, and I enjoyed Cassiel as a romantic figure. That's certainly different. Another plus is a sense of humor. I like that in a man.

Overall , this book tickled my fancy, and I impatiently await Book Three. Join us under the third oak tree. We'll be the ones drinking elven wine and munching on dandelion leaves.

Epic

I don't think Kellanna got what she bargained for when she decided to take a vacation! But an epic adventure brought with dragons and danger are a memory she won't soon be forgetting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. Although it's the second book in the series, I feel like it could be read as a stand alone. Reading book one would give you background info and help but isn't completely necessary.

Ok

Not too bad. The characters made some stupid decisions but to be fair most are not professionals. There was no romance and the guy she had a date with in the first book wasn't even mentioned at all. Cassiel has potential but hopefully he has more personality then just being hot.

I’ve only recently discovered BR Kingsolver and found a new favorite. I’ve addictively read through all of her urban fantasies sci-fi series, as well as the only sci-fi story story of hers I could find (Border Patrol, in the Bellator collection). Here’s my review of all of them in one clump - the bottom line being that they are all easily 5 star books.

Rosie O'Grady's Paranormal Bar and Grill Series

This was the first series by this author that I read, trying it in a whim as it was free on KU and looked like fun. Oh Dear Lord was it ever. Perfect world-building with Fae, elves, vampires, mages, et. al. Perfect backstory with the world’s best assassin (our lead) funding out that she’s been lied to most of her life by the Order of the Illuminati who are actually evil and not the force for good she thought, followed by her lopping off the top tier of the Order and ending up in hiding at the eponymous Rosie O'Grady's Bar and Grill. That’s the short version. The long one is much more complex and the series itself is filled with great plot lines and a perfect story arc (though each book stands alone sequentially, ie, the work fine and end well so long as you read them in order. Addictive fun and a perfect series ender.

The Telepathic Clans Saga

This was my second Kingsolver series. It evolves around telepathic clans (no shocker there) filled with people with different sets of telepathic “Gifts” (like mind shielding) made up of a series of “Talents” (different ways to do it). There are initially 25 known Gifts. At the top are the Succubi, all female, who have a series of Gifts including the Succubus Gift (drain energy from sex, etc). Known as Druids in the Irish clans, these ladies are bad-a**. The lead here is a Druid named Brenna, but she’s so much more. While the average telepath has only a few gifts, abs the extraordinary ones have 12-15 (Druids all have a base set of 8), Brenna has all of the gifts, unheard of. Anyway, she gets into a series of adventures with action, infra and inter-clan politics, and do much more. Incredible stuff really, all set in a world very different (but equally imaginative) as the prior series I’d read, and filled with a growing cast of perfectly crafted supporting characters. Once again you can read each book sequentially stand-alone, and they end with a perfect series ender.

Chameleon Assassin

I had initially avoided this series because I tend not to like a post-apocalypse setting. In this case the apocalypse in question (atomic wars leading to massive population loss and mutations) was so far in the past that society has more or less recovered and has now passed the pre-war tech levels. Our hero here, Libby, is the coolest kick-a** dame in fiction. An assassin and thief, among other things, who has two primary mutations: she’s a chameleon (she can look like anyone or pretty much blend into the background) plus a sort of electrokenisis, and a pretty fantastic set of physical skills (don’t mess with her in a fight) and computer hacking talents. Add in another perfect supporting cast and, well, just wow. I adored this series.

Dark Streets

This is the last of the series that I read, currently on book 2 (and ending with a perfectly good “Happily Enough For Now” though I’m drooling for the next book). It’s set in a world that’s very similar to that of The Telepathic Clans (though there are some differences - Washington DC is nuked in this one) but society is different as the Magi, who beat back (to a draw) the demons who invaded once rifts between worlds opened, now pretty much rule everything. Our lead here is another kick-a** dame, a police detective who is a magitek (a rare form of magic that enables one to do magic with machinery - including computers), potential heir to one of the Ten (the ten most powerful Magi clans who basically rule the world) but also the granddaughter of the man who accidentally opened the rifts and let all the monsters, demons and fantasy beings in. The perspective is very different, part gritty detective tale, part politics and warfare on the global scale, pure urban fantasy. Fantastic stuff, really.

Border Patrol (in the Bellator collection)

This was the only pure sci-fi story I’ve read by BR Kingsolver and was frustratingly perfect. Military sci-fi, the heroine here is the commander of an assault troop unit, it was an absolute total blast (and I’ve been reading this stuff since Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers was first published, so I should know). Perfect characters and storyline. The frustration is that while it ends in a very satisfying manner, I’m massively frustrated that this was only a short story. I’m truly hoping the author turns it into the first book in a new series.

Frankly, I’m hoping that BR Kingsolver expands every series she’s written, even though most have ended with great HEAs. That’s the sign, I know, of works that are fantastic and easy to highly recommend.

A really good story

Kellana is a woodlands Elf living in Washington DC in a world where magic and magical beings are the norm. when she was younger she went travelling with a friend through the different realms which occupy the universe and After her friends death ( he was the one capable of moving between realms) she was stuck with no way to return to her homeworld. After some difficult years Kellana manages to make her way to Earth she arrives here during the Second World War, touching down in eastern europe. A difficult time to be in Europe Kellanas struggles are not over after the war she is accepted into the USA as a war refugee and with time manages to make a good fulfilling life for herself.owning and operating a garden centre and landscaping buisness. Seventy years later Kellana is comfortable with her life until she becomes involved in a situation in the capital (see book one) now it's several weeks later and she's ready for a holiday, it's the off season for gardening so it's the perfect time for her to get away. She plans a trip to Europe but the night before she leaves received a phone call from an Elven settlement, there's rumours of a Dragons Egg for sale and if true it could have disastrous consequences for the Earth. Dragons are killing machines at their best and Dragon hatchlings just live to eat _--------- whatever they can find---------- so if the rumour is true it's imperative the egg is found before it can be hatched and returned to whence it came. Kellanas 's ability to see magical energy means she's the perfection to hung for an find the egg. She just has to find it before one of the unscrupulous mages looking to hatch it finds it first. An enjoyable story you do not need to have read the events of the first book to enjoy this one.

This one wasn't as stupidly fast-paced as the first one was and had a more solid core plot.

The nonchalance about killing people among other things that made the first book stand out from the crowd somewhat lost its appeal as there is nothing more that connects me to the story or characters.

The entire book seems very much like an improved carbon copy of the first one. A lot of key scenes are almost identical.

In the first one, I had difficulties telling if all the magics etc. are really just part of really good upfront world-building or if the stuff is just made up on the spot. Sadly I am almost certain most of it is the latter. There wasn't much room in the first one to find evidence for this but there is a lot of stuff that would've fundamentally changed the plot development of the first book if it hadn't only been invented later on.

So, it was still entertaining but the plot planning was lazy. It's basically fully discovery written without a lot of effort towards consistency.
Furthermore, I still haven't really connected to the MC as there just is little to connect to.
In conclusion, I lost interest and won't continue the series beyond. I just don't see later books tieing it all together and filling in the blanks and my emotional attachment is basically zero as well.

Vacations are overrated

The search for the egg was exciting except that there was a distressing tendency for the heroine and friends to their leave enemies alive. It never really works out and if they can bypass admittedly inadequate human legal processes, a mage (or elf or witch) has to do, that which a mage has to do, as they say.

I liked the MC taking time to do magical shopping. It makes up somewhat for her spending her vacation trying to avoid dying on a quest that these other elves should be handling. She's got skills and talent but she doesn't get a lot of respect for them but that's pretty much the way the world works in this reality. The lust thread sort of becoming a romantic thread is iffy. If it stays elven (some great sex but with some comfortable emotional distance) and she doesn't suddenly go boy crazy that could be an interesting development.

The major characters get skinnier but the minor characters (that survive) stay fairly 3D, which is a little odd. The action skirts being too pat, too predictable but so far it works. I'm certainly going to read the next book. If you like the writer, she's not disappointing in this volume. Cross fingers on how the MC and friends are developed in the next.

I liked this one just as well as the first one in the series, Gods and Demons. In this installment, Kellana tries to take a vacation but is 'hijacked' in a sense by an Elf Lord who wants her to help him find and get rid of a Dragon's Egg before the dragon hatches and mindlessly feeds on anyone and anything it can find. The trail leads Kellana from Iceland to Ireland and several places in Europe.
She spends time with an Elven clan in Iceland, meets a cousin she didn't know she had in Ireland, and reconnects with old friends from before she moved to America. She partners with the unlikely duo of a Nephilim and Valkyrie who are also after the egg, hoping to save the land from a rampaging dragon hatchling. There was an odd note or two, for one, a potential romantic interest from the last book is not mentioned at all in this book though nearly everyone else from the first book gets a shout out. There is a surprising twist in the end concerning her 'partners' that seemed a bit odd that it didn't come up earlier in the book, but overall it's just as good of a read as the first one, if also a bit gory, so I'm on to the third book in the series.

Heather's Notes
I liked this book. I liked the plot and the characters. I did not like the end where they killed off several side characters. It seemed unnecessary and kind of a downer to the end. She could have done the exact same thing but let them survive. Also I figured out Casseil and Valkeryi (I forgot her name already) much quicker than Kellena did.

An investigation with too many detectives

Kellana is going on vacation. A cousin in Ireland has invited her for a visit, but.... Her plans get changed by the Icelandic Alfholm leader -without asking her.
It seems her ability to 'see' magic is very rare. And the Elves need her to find something. A VERY dangerous something. The catch? Nobody knows where it is, and as she starts the search, she finds there are a number of others who already know it's out there - and they want it too, killing and kidnapping for even a lead. With battle mage elves on her side, what could go wrong? (Excuse me while i giggle hysterically). Now, we have severely injured elves, a Valkyrie, a half-elf Nephilim, and some Paladins. Bad guys multipy, all looking for - - - a Dragon Egg! Wow, that's only the first half, gotta read it for the rest. Please let this continue??!!??

I don't know if it was just me, but the difference between this book and book 1 was tremendous. For some reason, even though I liked the first book, it was just okay. I mean, I enjoyed it and could either continue or not...it wasn't really a big deal. That all changed with this book.

Something happened and I really seemed to connect more with the main MC and I truly enjoyed the drama going on with the search for the Dragon's Egg. We get to learn more about Elves in general and are given more information about the other realms. We also get to hear more about our MC's history and are introduced to a swoon worthy Nephilim.

I alternated between listening and reading and didn't have any problems with the narration. This was a really quick and easy read and I am anxious and excited about seeing what the next book has in store. I honestly have no idea if there is a next book, or if so...how many books are in this series. See...I didn't even look after the first book, but I'm now curious after this one. Good job :)

Strong delivery on the second book.

The writing is excellent, and the storyline keeps the reader riveted. The cast of characters remains interesting and diverse, although I did have trouble following along with the elf hierarchy in the first few chapters. It was a bit of an info dump and though it built on the world of the elves, I’m still left with tons of questions about the earth realm.

I’m also still left with questions about the h’s life until she began tripping through realms with Alaric. I feel like there is something we’re missing with her. Hopefully we’ll learn more of her secrets in the next book.... Like why she’s constantly reminding the reader how magically weak she is yet she whipped out a spell that cut three people completely in half, for one. Lol

Good

Beginning a few months after the end of the first book in the series, we find Kellana, the Elven heroine, heading off on holiday.
She is surprised to be asked to locate a suspected dragon’s egg, a task which takes her across Europe, and into the company of an attractive Nephilim, a Valkyrie, and a few mages (from various heritages).
Navigating the magic markets, dealing with dark magic and more, Kellana and her friends have a tough fight ahead of them.

The second book in the series is just as enjoyable as the first. The characters are interesting, the world building is excellent, and the storyline is entertaining.
The story is fast paced and action packed, with lots of magical action and a touch of romance.
A great read for the urban fantasy fan.
